    I saw three kinds of people at Ranger school: those who are just hanging on both mentally and physically, the bullet head soldier who wants to power their way through the course, and the great attitude guys. The hanging-on guys weeded out first. Most had quit before they got there, The majority quit in the first week. Others faded out in phase one, and a few made it to phase two. None of them graduate. The Bullet heads (Dicks) are the ones who self-destructed, peered out, and created a situation where the other students wouldn't help get through their leadership positions. I saw one patrol do ONLY what they were told by the PL and nothing more. The PL had pissed everyone off over the past four weeks and when he needed their help they weren't there for him. Some of the bullet heads wake up and grow from the process and they graduated. The great attitude guys. My class had a few of us that were always loving Range school. The more it sucked the more we liked it. We helped others and tried to keep others pumped up. Here's the difference between Bullethead and me. During an OPORD it was raining, cold and everyone was exhausted. At some point, I fell asleep midsentence. When I opened my eyes everyone was asleep, even the RI. I waited for a second or two and said in a loud voice "This concludes my op oder, what are your questions?" everyone opened their eyes, and the RI played it off like he heard my order. Everyone pitched in and learned the plan at the sand table and in rehearsal. I could have been screwed, but everyone helped me through the patrol. I got a go, not because it was good, but because everyone worked together. It became us against the RI. I was always the first to grab a radio or the 60. I always said positive stuff to all the other students. Here's the secret behind that: Giving positive out builds positive within. Me and my Ranger buddy got recycled in Utah as we were getting ready to load the AC for Florida. It got me down for 30 seconds, then I thought of what I could do better during desert phase. The plus was my Ranger Buddy and I got extra food and sleep for two days. I took several hot showers and even snuck Icecream out of the mess hall.
    Great video! I miss the old days.... Here's my condensed advice - get in great shape, especially for endurance activities like running and rucking. Second, get a Ranger Handbook and learn it! Third, accept the fact that it will suck and a level you have never known, but many have been there-done that - you can too. Fourth, be the good attitude guy - help everyone, never spread negative, and learn to enjoy the suck! Fifth, talk to guys that just got back. Get current intel and advice.
    Good luck young Ranger

      This is on the mark. There are 2 things you need to take to the school. One is commitment. You will do what you need to do until you die. Not idle words. You will, you will, push until you die. When you die you can take a break. Other ranger students have died in the school. Death is possible. But no quitting before death. The second thing is attitude. Hell on earth is not pleasant. You volunteered. Suck it up and drive on. Positive, cooperative and supportive attitude. Now go enjoy.

    As a Ranger School grad, 110% on your 5 reasons. #5 is the most important, one day at a time. I lived for the RI change over in the morning, I told myself each day a hundred times or more, just make to RI change over. Never thought about next phase, next week, or the tab. Just thought about making it through today. I knew if I made it through enough days, eventually, it would end. And it did...class 3-92 Winter Ranger.

    Ranger school was rough no doubt but I found the mental part of missing the wife and kids even more challenging. You don’t communicate. Not like a deployment where you can jump on the Internet or phone if lucky and speak, you get to call only during your pass. I hated it, but like almost all of my Ranger buddies I just kept saying “I’ll quit tomorrow” and eventually tomorrow was graduation.

    Great points, from retired SGM, Honor Grad class 04/96 and former RI 5TH RTB 04-08. Although, I did not experience all the "pain" you mentioned on a daily basis. My advice, lean on your Ranger Buddies, pay attention during the classes, take one day at a time and remember it's only 62 days give a day or two. Once you pass RAP week, it truly is not too difficult. Stay motivated, help others and live the Ranger Creed.

    I remember a briefing where someone told us we would get 1 c-ration a day during the course, which was 1100 calories, but they would take 10,000 calories a day out of the fat of our asses. They weren’t kidding. When the training was finished we hit the showers. We had lost so much weight we didn’t recognize each other. The big guys were no longer big. C ration?When did you go through Ranger School?Ranger School is nothing like it was when you ate C rats-that ended in the 70’s.No more RIP like it used to be-now it’s RASP which is difficult to say the least.

      C-rats weren’t bad. They could be broken down into mini-meals. I never heard of RIP and only lately RASP. We showed up for school and off you went. When I got out I went to an airborne-ranger company in the guard. The guard was where draft dodgers hid and my impression was those people - except for vets - would not fight under any circumstances. I graduated class10-67, about 55 of 210 got tabs. 53 days of rain during the course. Ranger School sets the standard and attitude for everything you do after. It about more than being a soldier although you will be the best. I survived a tough year in RVN and I attribute a lot of success to Ranger School lessons. I have 5 decorations, but I hardly value those; what I value the most is the Ranger tab followed by the CIB. Ranger School is an investment in your life and future.

I'm a retired disabled combat veteran with 20 years and a few months. I just wish that I would have went to RANGER SCHOOL. I regret it but I don't beat myself up about it. I have raised ranger school buddies and we respect each other. I have a relative who was the ranger school CSM. The guys I know that have their ranger school tab are really good guys. They each told me that after ranger school they needed about 30 days for their body to heal. I can understand that. Again I have alot of respect towards you and all rangers and God Bless each of you. And hats off to those guys that recycled (especially more than once) and got through. 3-93 winter Ranger.

    This is a phenomenal video of excellent advice. Granted i havent been to Ranger School yet but will be going within the next year. But im doing a lot of research about it and found this video. And based off every tabbed Soldier i ever talked to everything in this video is consistent with what they went through. Everything. At first i saw the title and thought this was a video to break morale. But instead it was a motivational and educational pep talk for success.

    Active duty Marine machinegunner here, got offered to the chance to go to Ranger School and I've been using your 13-week program to prepare, loving it! I'm a little bit on the heavier side for my height, as most machinegunners are. Currently 185lbs at 5'8. My question is; how would you recommend approaching nutrition as a tactical athlete who is trying to drop some extra pounds and lean out? How do you balance getting enough carbs and protein for muscle recovery, while also shedding that fat? Thanks!

    • @GrittySoldier
      @GrittySoldier  3 роки тому +4

      Hey man!
      So, following the 13-week Ranger Program will definitely have you leaning out, especially if your diet is on point.
      Try using this: www.precisionnutrition.com/nutrition-calculator
      Plug everything in and follow what the results say for a couple weeks at least. You can also use a macro counter app to help you track. I use Macros+ pretty often when I’m trying to get my macros/calorie intake just right.

      Brother, you won’t need to worry about it. If you survive the first few days you will shed pounds like a goose on a laxative diet. And you won’t be getting enough food to have to balance anything.
      Here are a couple of tips for you. Be prepared to run 5 miles. I don’t mean run in formation with a cadence caller, jog or airborne shuffle. I mean run as in run. I passed out yet stayed on my feet. When I got my senses back I was running the obstacle course. Never quit. Never. Die before you quit.
      Watch the old Error Flynn movie “Objective Burma.” Watch “Merrill’s Marauders” starring Jeff Chandler. Watch the movie “Jungle”, a true story, now on Roku etc. The first half of the film builds drama, the second half parallels the Ranger school experience.
      I graduated the school in June ‘71 with the tab. It was worth it.

    I had friends that went through RIP in the early 1980's and they said it was tough as hell, but well worth it!!! I even served at a couple of active duty units that had prior service Rangers there...
    We were pretty tough back then, but it was because of our training!!! I was a 11C and was the best mortar gunner in the Brigade and I also was asked to pull Point for a OCS training exercise at Fort Benning Georgia and caught the
    OPFOR unit(82nd or 101st Airborne) coming over the hillside. I ended up telling the officer's to withdraw and go around their flanks...
    We ended up winning the exercise because of it...

    Any commentary on age being a factor from early 20's to late 30's? Age limit is technically 41 but I would imagine after 30 you wouldn't want to encourage people to give it a shot due to the natural degradation the body goes through as it gets older. I'm 28.
    You make it sound like most people can become a ranger so long as the put in the work and understand what it is that's being demanded of them. I'm not sure if that's the intent but its inspiring.

    • @GrittySoldier
      @GrittySoldier  3 роки тому +28

      I went when I was 31 and felt like I had an advantage over the young guys because my body was more “experienced.” I knew more about what my body was capable of.
      Age is not a factor. I don’t want to hear you say that again! 😉
      Go to Ranger if it’s a dream of yours, and do whatever you can to think of reasons to go, rather than reasons not to. Go before it really is to late (you lose a leg, or you die). 💪

    Like you get less than 4 hrs of sleep (which will lead to sleep deprivation) only 1-2 meals a day (1,280 calories... that may seem a lot, but you will be rucking 15-20 miles every day which will burn them calories fast. So you will have hunger deprivation), you will exercise everyday (I'm not talking bout those preparation drills you do at basic and ait, I'm talking bout more rigorous exercises), and all these factors can lead to emotional distress

    In 1976 I went to Ranger School. I went all the way through but failed my last patrol putting me at 1-3. They offered me a complete recycle back to day one. I seized the opportunity and did the complete course back to back. Yes it sucked. Yes it hurt. But I came out a better person/soldier for it. I passed all 4 patrols I lead on my second trip.
    Lessons learned will sound familiar: I passed my peers which is the reason I got offered the recycle. I volunteered to carry the M60 because that was what I did in the battalion, at one point I carried the 60 and a frigging PRC27 radio, when someone sprained an ankle. I failed to rely enough on others and tried to do it all myself when I was in charge.
    On the second trip, I kept everyone informed on what was upcoming so they could be prepared. Only one guy failed out on peers, he fell asleep on security a lot and we caught him stealing his ranger buddies c-rats. Everyone failed him rating him lower than whale shit.
    Follow what gritty soldier says, you will be fine. RLTW

    If a RI asks you if you want to quit, reply with "yes Sergeant; ill quit tomorrow." Just keep telling yourself you will quit tomorrow. Maintain strict control over your mental game. Focus only on the mission and the current task at hand. Take everything one task at a time and do not think about where you will be and what you will be doing tomorrow. Just keep asking yourself these questions and answering them with your actions; "Where am I; where am I going; and what am I going to do next."
