Excellent Excellent very helpful words of wisdom. A realtor would say Location , location, location but a Ranger will say Details Details Details. What I took from all of this was confidence. Each baby step is designed to build your confidence that one step more. Thats what I need to work on. I have always been on the shy side of confidence. Drives me crazy!!!! I had 3 land navigation "tests" in Ranger Class 11/77, 2 in Mountain Phase and 1 in Florida Phase.

If your map is not waterproof, laminate it ASAP!!

Not planning to go to Ranger School any time soon. We had roughly the same number of no go's when I went through SFAS. Understand it was much higher in SFQC before they initiated the selection phase.

There's a S.F. guy that makes a point about using a red light . He ask , "how do you see the red lines on a topo?" It is suggested to use your poncho with a white light . I need to practice . 👍👍👍👍👍

Most military maps are read light readable.

Never had to navigate at Benning, pretty sure it is much like Bragg, rolling hills and pine trees with few terrain features. Have to trust your compass and your pace count.

I did a lot of Map reading and land navigation in the jungles of Panama when I was station in the army in Panama for 2 1/2 years in that’s triple canopy jungle. If you can navigate through that you can navigate through anything. It’s a lot of attention to detail. Thank you it was a great video.

I realize that you are talking about passing a RANGER SCHOOL Nav. Course, and is part of TACTICAL training. Why does everything have to be TACTICAL?
I have a basic understanding of topographic maps. One of their draw backs is that what ever declination is shown on that map, unless it is brand new, declination on a brand new ISSUE of that map, the declination can be way off. Walk 1/2 mile east or west and the declination will differ slightly. I'll guess about 1/2 degree. Over a long distance, that 1/2 degree becomes hundreds of feet of east west error.
So, and here's a tip from a "No Nothing", Look up the up to date declination for the area where you are and reset your compass. Also, remember the declination will be different from one place to another, even as little as CROSS OVER" into a neighboring Topographic map quadrangle.
So before using your compass, you have to know a whole bunch of stuff that effects the use of the thing. I've relied on dead rezoning for years, by reading the topography and done OK, but then It has never been TACTICAL EITHER.
Being able to read the topography, is vital, but only in a survival or tactical situation. I, myself, would have no chance of passing that test, without a whole bunch of CLASS ROOM instruction first, so that I can even understand your terminology.
None the less, this is a great video, chuck full of great information. Anyone who wishes to be part of any of the SEPCIAL FORCESES units of our military needs this information and, gentlemen, you have my respect. Old Muttly (icon at the left) Gives you all a right snappy salute. ;-)

I happened to find a compass during Mountain Phase, Class 5/79. It was half buried and I found it with my knee when got I down on one knee, ouch! Still have it. Some poor Ranger student before me probably got a minus spot report for losing it!

I'll add check your compass. I was doing a land nav course. And I was not hitting my points. Come to find out my compass was off. So check your compass with other people or a spare one.

Plot your points 3 times to make sure your ready, than go the furthest point no matter what, hardest first than rest is easy.

I’m going to boot soon on an option 40 only thing I’m worried about is land nav I don’t know a single thing about land nav I don’t even know how to use a compass or read a map…any tips?
