Thankyou Sir for your inspiration and positive feedback. My name is Paul Hunter, I'm 58 years old and from the west coast of Scotland. Once or twice a week depending on my health, I have a limited hike near to where I live and brandish military clothng and backpack and discover woods, forests, ravines, rivers and streams. Ranger Class 4-83, though I started with 3-83. Mountains, twice. My dad was 11-58. Everything you advise here is similar to what we heard back then and a LOT like what my dad said. Very valuable insight!! I appreciate the advice and I know this will be useful for many others also. You did mention that it is not necessary to be an infantry tactics expert....however what advice/tips do you have on RTTs and Land nav?
You don’t need to be a land nav expert, but you do need to have a strong understanding of the basics (I.e. plotting grids, obtaining and following azimuths, reading a map with elevation changes, terrain association). As far as RTTs go, there is an app called RangerPro that is very useful. It has videos of actual RIs going over each tested RTT by the Ranger standard, so if nothing else, at least look at that.

They do a two-week Xmas exodus. If you are a winter ranger, you’ll get essentially a two-week vacation in between phases. It’s good because your body can heal and can put some weight back on, but bad because you loose a little bit of what you learned and the “Ranger mindset” is hindered...
I’m currently in OSUT as a 19D and I’m all but guaranteed a spot in ranger school (I’m NG and I’ve been recommended). It’s been my goal since I’ve signed my contract. We’re about to head out on HBL and we graduated march 9th. Would you please give me some advice maybe some in depth workouts to start on HBL and Some things I could continue to do when I get back to base?
I’m looking to join the army and asking for the option 40 contact, I would want to kno what you think about that. I really want to become a ranger and you’re inspiring me more to do it now!
Thank you for this - really awesome content. Extremely relevant, and helpful advice. Can you speak to any recommendations you have on sewing on name/US Army tapes/cateyes to uniforms and TA-50 prior to day zero at Ranger School? My assumption there is that guys in the NG/Reserve (going through the RTAC pipeline) who get a slot and go down use their own home-unit TA-50 throughout the course rather than Benning-issue? Im also assuming that the correct approach is to bring all the uniforms/PCs on the packing list with sewed on tapes/cateyes (but not ranks) as well as sewed on tapes/cateyes on all TA-50 (plus extra tapes/fabric/sewing kit/thimble/etc if stuff tears off or you get issued different TA-50 in Benning). Do most guys you know normally sew all this stuff on by hand or buy a sewing machine to save money? (if so, a particular thread type or fishing line?) Or just spend money to have the dry cleaner on post do all the sewing?
I’d like to go to Ranger but right now the money for schools is limited to those who need it for promotion. I’ve brought up the idea of forfeiting the remainder of my bonus or drill pay for a time to pay for it. My civ job is good enough I’m not worried about money so that really all just goes to my TSP anyways and I already have a pension and 401k so again not entirely worried about that either. Anyone ever done this?
what would you say, from your personal experience, is the maximum age to go to ranger school (or basically, every other training thats so intense, special forces etc.)
I was 33 when I did Ranger and had no issues. I actually felt like I had an advantage because I knew more about what my body could or could not do than 20-somethings. We had a 45 year old there, he passed fine too. I’ve seen many “older” dudes go through intense training and they always do well IMO. I think it’s all about mentality and being in good shape.
@@GrittySoldier Thank you, considering going back to the military and getting in a specops unit, next year. I will then be 30 with a university degree and always thought to be to old. Nice to be wrong.
I like when you talk about having positive people to talk to. I'm 35 and I want to do rasp. Is this doable. Ive mentioned this before I'm a contractor in Iraq and people back home treat me TOTALY different, like in a weird way. Would you be open to talking about rasp?
Been in 12 years and finally going. Thankfully Grp throw those slots out like candy. I am going to wtc for rtac and will walk over to the school house if I get the go there. Any insight on rtac?
Would you recommend purchasing boots off the bat for training (civilian)? or would a regular Salomon boot (which I have) work well for ruck training? I'm finishing up my undergrad now and should be graduating in early 2022. I just started getting back to work last week after about a year of inconsistency; just following some AFSOC program I found online. I'm trying to research well ahead of time about being a ranger and properly prepping for it. Thanks for the video
Also, regarding the packing information. Is this something you get to do once you're enlisted and finished with basic? or if you're signing up with an option 40, you're expected to have this sourced out? I'm looking to get into the medical side. Would anything change? I assume no. Once again, thanks for your time
I would go ahead and start looking into getting some boots that can be used in the service (complaint to AR 670-1 regs). You might as well start rucking with “the real thing” to help your feet get used to it. Don’t stress the packing list now, you’ll have time to figure that out once your in and once you actually obtain a date for Ranger School. You won’t be expected to have it sourced out until you have a slot.
Would you recommend buying a ranger pack for somebody who was prior enlisted and already has a lot of the gear? Also would it be wise to buy one prior to IBOLC or wait until you have ranger school orders?. Thanks!
Need some pointers about going. Im an E7 with 12 years of service. Non infantry but have been under usasoc for 10 of my 12 years of service. Physically fit and mentally sound. Thoughts? Were there seniors in your class?
I was a senior, went at the same age. Their was also a 43 y/o that graduated my class. Your age won the be an issue. Just show up prepared and ready to put in 110%.
@@GrittySoldier thanks so much for the prompt response, i know i have more in me for leadership abilities and toughness and I want to be challenged with the desire to go 18E. I feel like if i dont do it now I wont ever try and go for it again.
Realistically what is the pass/fail ratio and what are the most common things that people struggle the most with? I'm a 12B in a sapper company and we do so much with Strykers that we don't focus a lot of physical type things as much as we probably should. I've spent the last 3 years thinking about it but the leadership here isn't very concerned with schools and stuff. Really boring duty station honestly
Getting through RAP week is the hardest part for most, that is where the majority of failures will happen, anywhere from 25-50%. If you are prepared physically for RAP week, and are mentally ready to handle being at Ranger for a “minimum” of 61 days, you stand a good chance of passing.
I am having a very hard time getting a slot to Ranger school. I have been asking for the last year. Any advice on that? I am an in shape soldier as well.
Is Ranger school a school only open to people going to become a Ranger, or is this open to any soldier that wants to go through it? For example, what about someone that is going the Green Beret rout?
What kind of Rick sack do I need to train before ranger school and can I bring that ruck bag to ranger school? If not what kind do I need to bring or will they provide it when you get to the school?
I'm headed to basic in two weeks then to ranger school. Do you think Basic will prep me enough before I get there. I'm only worried because I have no prior knowledge or training for my body.
In the process of getting in now, my recruiter said that I’ll most likely fail out of ranger school & RASP due to lack of military experience/knowledge if I join as 11B with option 40 in my contract. He said to try for rangers/RASP after I’m in the Army for a year or so to gain experience first. Is this the best move instead of getting option 40 and going for RASP right away? I keep reading that nothing is guaranteed with these schools unless it’s in your contract. Thank you for all of your videos, they’ve been really helpful.
That’s right it’s not guaranteed. You’ll hear that a lot, to go into the reg army first to gain experience then try out for RASP/Ranger. But I think it’s best to just go for it. If you do fail the first time, the. You’ll go to the reg army until you can go try again. Long story short, you lightly as well give it a shot right away.

Legs and back. You want to be in great ruck marching shape. You want to be nimble and light, not heavy or bulky. Focus on endurance work, don’t focus on gaining too much muscle. Honestly man, just get this and take the guesswork out of it. This program will square you away: grittysoldier.com/collections/training-programs/products/6-week-ranger-school-fitness-program
Thanks for the video. Please what is the injury rate? Am looking at attending RS but someone advices me to get my OCS done first before Ranger school cos there’s a huge possibility of injury. I’m currently E5.
I'm hoping to go to rangers training jun . I'm getting it done for me and my wife . I'm trying now . But I do have one question when joining the army to become a ranger do you go straight to ranger training or do you go to basics first also to get your pack ready for the rangers the army does not give you the stuff
If you join the army to be a Ranger you will go to basic training, airborne, then Rasp. You won’t go to Ranger School until a couple years after you’ve been in, around the time you get promoted to SPC.
im 16 and im scared man, I want it more than anything but i’m just so terrified of quitting or not making it through. do you think that i’ll be good with aging, like are most people anxious abt it in highschool
You can let fear stop you from trying. If you really think about it, the very worst thing that could happen is you fail the first try, but then you’ve learned valuable lessons that would make you even more prepared for the next attempt. If you keep trying, eventually you will conquer your goal.
How can I talk to you personally about getting into the army and be a ranger I’ve talked to my recruiter a couple times. But I’m sure he left out info. I wanna hear ur story and what path u took. And I’d love to take any advice from you.
Hey man I got a question 2 things really the first thing is since you can do ranger school in rotc what happens if you need to recycle and 2 as an officer is it possible to get a contract with rasp 2? Edit: forgot to ask but also is it correct that there is a water confidence course and what does it entail
First yes the is a water confidence course. It’s jumping in with full equip, taking it off, a 25m swim in full uniform and a zip line. None of it is bad at all. RASP 2 is something you’ll need to apply for after PL time. I am not sure about recycling in rOTC, I guess if it conflicts with going back to school, then you’d just fail Ranger... try not to recycle 🤷♂️
Thank you for answering my questions I’m sorry but what is PL time? And also if it conflicts do you know if I would be able to go back sorry for all the questions
Also the stress of when you’re being graded in a leadership position. Doesn’t matter if you have the heaviest ruck, climbing the tallest mountain or going thru the deepest swamp, none of that compares to the mental stress.
@@GrittySoldier I’ll let you know when I make my enlistment sir , will most likely be a winter solider, coming from Ohio. We battle elements year round lol.
So I'm 30 and I literally have been learning as much as possible about ranger school and most people seemed to be younger than me who went. So this is incredibly encouraging. This is actually something I can do.
Yeah you can definitely do it. Honestly, I think you will have more old man strength then the younger population, your mind will be stronger as well. Go in there with the right frame of mind and a good fitness level and you’ll be fine man. If you haven’t yet, check out grittysoldier.com/collections/training-programs/products/6-week-ranger-school-fitness-program for getting physically prepared!
It's incredibly tempting. I just have to make sure my body, my mind and my wife (home life) is ready and that my wife is on board with my choice. Her brother (he's two years older than me) is a West Point Grad, top twenty ranger comp finalists, works the for state department in a high-end job, (just as a reference.) I know she understands what he went through I'm just not sure if she believes in me yet. I got some work to do if I want to go this path. It's either Warrant officer school on the pathway to Army Flight school or Rangers. I can do both. I'm not doubting myself, I've always worked hard for what I wanted in life. I'm not an expert either. Because of your UA-cam channel I can become more confident in making a choice. The more I learn about the Army it becomes more clear that, if you have a will there can be a way. If you're willing to commit to the job. I really, really like that... I'm new to this culture.
All the same. Your workouts are amazing, and I have been following and incorporating them into my routine. Thank you so much for sharing. Very encouraging and motivating. I'm hitting it as hard as I can...
@@GrittySoldier Thanks. I always wondered about that since I'm not the greatest at it. I have an RI in my class who said that I could. I'll have to ask the other RI in my class as well 🤣 Thanks again
David Caballero yeah you should be good. Don’t overly stress the land nav course, just make sure you are a confident “land naver” before you go. It’s not that bad.
You can run internal roads and trails. The training area is fair game EXCEPT for the swamp so STAY AWAY. You CANNOT be anywhere near 50 feet from the boundaries. Some of the boundaries are roads or trails
Yea boundarie roads are bad try to stay 50 m off. And the swamp is what gets you every time. Don't go through it. Just run everywhere especially when on roads and at night to make up time you will need it. The swamp is a time killer.
This video and lack of subscribers shows how much the Army, real world, and the world knows nothing about or care s to educate themselves. I thought it was easy compared to Pre-Ranger RIGHT ACCROSS THE STREET. I mean seriously you get smoked for 3 weeks then triple smoked in the actual school.

Would you please give me some advice maybe some in depth workouts to start on HBL and Some things I could continue to do when I get back to base?
did you pass
AH ! Hiking in New Mexico !

If we were hypothetically considering doing this and we wanted to get it touch with you, how would we go about doing that?
Here, or through IG: instagram.com/grittysoldierfitness
what would you say, from your personal experience, is the maximum age to go to ranger school (or basically, every other training thats so intense, special forces etc.)
Long and thick hell yea.
Been in 12 years and finally going. Thankfully Grp throw those slots out like candy. I am going to wtc for rtac and will walk over to the school house if I get the go there. Any insight on rtac?
Not really, just another Darby Phase from what I understand. That, and you get a weekend to recoup in between RTAC and Ranger.
What’s is your mos? And did you pass ranger school?
@@Jordan-hs5db just graduated on the 27th
Not for men who don’t want to get fragged by their own down range. -ghost of Pat Tillman.
@@GrittySoldier Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it
Would you recommend buying a ranger pack for somebody who was prior enlisted and already has a lot of the gear? Also would it be wise to buy one prior to IBOLC or wait until you have ranger school orders?. Thanks!
Yes I absolutely would, and if you’re going to IBOLC, you’re going to Ranger. Might as week get it squared away now 👍
Need some pointers about going.

I would love to have everything I need for Ranger. If only someone was giving away free ranger pack
What kind of Rick sack do I need to train before ranger school and can I bring that ruck bag to ranger school? If not what kind do I need to bring or will they provide it when you get to the school?
Use the army issued ruck.
@@GrittySoldier copy that
I'm headed to basic in two weeks then to ranger school. Do you think Basic will prep me enough before I get there. I'm only worried because I have no prior knowledge or training for my body.
I would say no unfortunately, it will take a bit more then you’ll get at basic, but it’s a good start!
@@GrittySoldier thank you for your response, sir!
Definitely go to RASP straight out of basic if you can. They want guys to grow up in Regiment, they honestly don’t like guys from big army as much
@@GarrettH-rl7ml I appreciate your response! You think 27 is too old? I ship out for Benning on January 3rd.

Exactly!!
what would you say are the most important muscle groups to be strong in going in to ranger school

Do it now. Don’t worry about injury rates. If you have the opportunity to go to RS now, take it!

@@GrittySoldier I believe it, thanks a lot man. your channel helps a lot to make it less mysterious and unknown

How can I talk to you personally about getting into the army and be a ranger I’ve talked to my recruiter a couple times. But I’m sure he left out info. I wanna hear ur story and what path u took. And I’d love to take any advice from you.
great video man I'm a marine after my contract I'm sighing up for army ranger school hit me up if you have advice for me.
Yessssssss
What is the hardest thing about ranger school?
Getting recycled
Also the stress of when you’re being graded in a leadership position. Doesn’t matter if you have the heaviest ruck, climbing the tallest mountain or going thru the deepest swamp, none of that compares to the mental stress.
Swamps...swamps, is trash
Any advice on pre-training and preparing for RASP?
Where do I order this ranger pack ?

Bro I hope when I enlist and enter Ranger school You are an RI somehow
Maybe lol
@@GrittySoldier
I’ll let you know when I make my enlistment sir , will most likely be a winter solider, coming from Ohio.
We battle elements year round lol.
How old were you when you went to ranger school?
33 years old.
Can you run roads in land nav?
David Caballero Yes, just don’t get caught. 😏
@@GrittySoldier Thanks. I always wondered about that since I'm not the greatest at it. I have an RI in my class who said that I could. I'll have to ask the other RI in my class as well 🤣
Thanks again
