I drove home from Dallas like this. I removed the coolant cap and just did 55 mph the whole way to Portland. Running with a empty trailer. I kept stoping every few hours to inspect it. You’d be amazed how much abuse that detriot takes. That’s a head gasket job, and when they pull the head they may find a dropped liner. If that’s the case then you got a inframe on your hands. And if that’s not bad enough you have to cut the block if that liner dropped. And when that happens your looking at a Inframe Reman Head if your head is warped or damaged All new fluids and filters A few clamp here and there A few new hoses here and there And while your there do a new egr or delete it. And a grand total of about 18k bill. Let’s hope when the head comes off you don’t have cam issues in the head or need bearings for the head cam. Yes these 14 liters ad up fast. But nothing like the new Detroit’s. Those cost about 30k to do all the above mentioned items.
I just got my truck back last week. Luckily it was just the head gasket..but it was the same symptoms as yours. . A week and half and later and $6700 back in the road..
Rigoberto Hernandez you got lucky 🍀, but I would still keep an eye out . After overhauls , sometimes head bolts can break , yes new ones . So try to not overwork the engine, till it has a chance to break in . All the metal parts will be getting their heat treatments.
Yes it does , but just know your on borrowed time till you get it fixed properly. Even though my engine is fine now , I still have a gallon jug hanging with the overflow tube stuck in it . It’s a safeguard, there is never any fluid in it , but I know that if it does ever drain into the tank then I have a problem. You can see it in my videos .
Great video, I had the same issue with coolant coming out the over flow tube. So I put another cap on and it doesn't push out anymore. I was putting water in it then I got the radiator flush and put new coolant in it. Now I'm actually losing coolant. My air compressor is a little wet on top of it and noticed a little oil on the governor. And now after getting a oil change I notice my oil is darker, normally it would be clear for a couple of weeks. Let me know what u think, u got the sub keep these good videos coming. Thxs in advance.
Kelmo Kelmo if you have oil coming out of the governor then your compressor has blow by . When it turns winter time that’s when your going to have air freezing issues .
3rd I would suggest going to a parts store and buying antifreeze dye , it’s very cheap $4 dollars each , 3 small bottles are all you need . Get on eBay or amazon and buy a cheap $5 black light . After you get everything , and add the dye , power wash the truck , and engine. Then at night time after driving the truck , shine the black light to find any leaks . Shine it on your exhaust too .
It’s either this or buy a gallon or so of antifreeze and watch it all get blown out , and then smell it burning off the engine , though the air vents .
I used to have the same problem, built-in pressure on the water Tank and drainout for the drain line. I replace the air compressor and that was all fix .!problem solve!
My truck is doing the same thing but head gasket is not the issue u may have an internal leak oil cooler egr cooler heater core and or the air compressor . Mine have leak between water pump and air compressor u won't see it leaking all the time but u may catch a puddle in the morning I also have oil cooler leak.. if there no sign of coolant in oil head gasket is tight. Hopefully the head doesn't have a crack in it.. but then u would be eating more then a gallon of coolant and u would see signs of coolant in oil

Well diesels are a little different sometimes when it comes to the head gasket. Most of the time you will have pressure, with no antifreeze in the oil . If a liner is bad then that can cause the gasket to go also but not always and with or without antifreeze in the oil . Bad injector cups can put antifreeze in the fuel too .
Just had that problem few days ago come to find out I had 2 broken fuel injector in it replaced them an resealed the remaining ones she runs great now!!!

Piston liners and head gaskets normally cause this . Prepare for a possible overhaul on your engine. At the cheapest you may have a head bolt that just broke, in that case normally a head gasket job with new bolts. Make sure to get the head X-rayed to make sure it’s not warped or cracked also .
@@juliemathis1065 I ended up with a liner that started leaking and blew the head gasket. So I chose a complete Detroit brand rebuild kit from the dealership, and had all the liner holes recut . Altogether $11,000 . But everything is fresh .
Normally if an Egr cooler goes bad you get antifreeze mixed with oil and your overflow jug turns black or brown from the mixture and blow antifreeze out of the overflow.A blown head gasket will start blowing antifreeze out of the overflow but the antifreeze stays the same color.
I just got the same problem yesterday I did exactly what you did I just got to make it to Vegas parking in our yard...i live in Michigan I'm here in Phoenix velocity Freightliner they diagnose my truck and came to the conclusion head gasket or crack in the head... but they were going to charge me $1,600 to take it apart to make sure they also mention the liner but I said as long as I can make it to Vegas parking I'll come and get it one day haul itt back to Michigan and fix it .
If it’s a liner , there are little holes on your engine block call weaping holes , if your liner is leaking , these are here to let you know your liner seal or shins are failing .

The gasket kit is cheap , but unfortunately it’s not to simple to change. Plus I would advise taking the head to a machine shop to have it checked out for warpage and cracks . A normal labor rate for parts labor and the head being checked out is $2800 , and that’s if everything’s fine with the head . Make sure to get New head bolts from a dealership ! Aftermarket can be crap 💩.
It should get you by so you can get a plan together, just remember the longer you go the more damage that can be done . This is just a very short term solution.

So to a parts store , I went to Autozone, and ask for dye to go into the antifreeze , make sure it is for a Diesel engine, there is a difference. I use the cat brand antifreeze from the cat dealer and it’s red . it’s $4 a bottle , you only need a couple bottles, it does not need to be mixed full strength like it say on the bottles . Do not buy there detector kit because it’s a waste of money and costs too much . You can go on amazon or eBay for a black light , around $5 . All you do is add the dye into your antifreeze, it does not need to be changed, keep in mind the die will change the color of your antifreeze if it’s red , it’s fine . Run the truck like you normally work on the road . It will take awhile for it to mix up . So buy your dye first and add it , then order your black light . Once your light comes in , it will be mixed .

GETREAL! Time to save up your money , and plan to find a mechanic that’s not going to rip you off ! If it’s not blowing to much antifreeze, then use this time to get your finances in order . This may be putting money back , or shopping for a bank loan .

$11,000 total , using a Detroit brand kit from the dealer . $4500 was just for parts , then over a $1000 to get the head checked, cleaned and reworked, I had some other small things replaced along with that too . I had some people I know do the work .
But also right after I had to replace the radiator , I believe that the built up pressure did it in , due to it being a half metal half plastic factory style version. It started having a slow leak on the top where the seam of plastic and metal go together.

Injector o-rings can cause this also, as well as a bad gasket on your air compressor, just a thought

2nd if your losing antifreeze , under the right conditions that could be your compressor as well . So have a test done on it .

Make sure the dye is for a Diesel engine, and it will change the color of your antifreeze, it’s all good

Rigoberto Hernandez yeah I agree , that’s where they get you , $1600 to take it apart then your engine is in pieces . You did the right thing .
But you may not have a bad head at all . Sometimes head bolts break . In this case just the gasket leaks .

Labor and the head being checked out is where most of your money is going to go . The parts are just a few hundred.

It was a blown head gasket, I ended up having a complete overhaul put in the engine. So it’s all fresh now .
