Scotty Kilmer how much will this cost a blown head gasket on a 69 straight 6 200cc Ford Mustang
Scotty Kilmer does this work for North Star Engines
Scotty Kilmer can I just disconnect the spark plug or do you have to remove it?
Scotty Kilmer i am losing coolant somewhere. In the master cylinder i see it has dropped a little bit. I only have on cap to my coolant. The warning light comes on after a few miles of driving and a few mins of idle-ing, and the temperature gage goes up to 1/2. It normally sits around 1/4 to 3/8. Car is a 04 Saturn Vue v6 with 250k.
Scotty Kilmer I have a 2002 nissan altima . It was overheating due to the fans stop working. I fixed the fan but it won't start. How can u help me? Thanks
12 years later and this video is still useful. Thanks uncle Scotty!

Thanks mate, mechanic told me my car could have blown Head gasket or cracked head, milky oil and blowing white smoke. Would cost $490 to have it checked. I decided to not go ahead. I came across your video. I got seal-tite for heads, heas gaskets etc. Put in radiator. Low and behold it stopped the white smoke and the temperature gauge went back to normal. You are a legend. Thank you.
I just got a 2000 gmc jimmy 4.3. I didnt know jack squat about mechanics. When it went to hell on me, I fixed everything myself on it thanks to your explainations and a chilton manual. I appreciate people like you because you help us save money when the alternative is impossible. 1300 for intake and head gasket replacements? Nope, 100 bucks, 2 days, lots of pictures, lots of cussin. But, the feeling of breakin down an engine is straight up priceless.
I was literally expecting Mr. Scotty Kilmer to say "Just junk the car". And end the video right there lol.
Me to lol
Lol yup
Someone said my car might need a head gasket so he said junk the car but the car starts right up.For some reason its not holding antifreeze that's what the other mechanic said and it's not warming up in the winter only sometimes but it's rear.I'ma try this steel seal out, any other suggestions ??
@@drrobotnikmeanbeanma Skim the head and change the gasket. You can do it yourself if you follow the instructions and get the proper tools.
It was a Toyota there never junked with Scotty
I watch lots of videos on car repair. Some people are natural born teachers or just have the gift. Scotty Kilmer has the gift. I always look at the length of the video...Scotty says more in just over three minutes than most tipsters say in over 20.
Congratulations Mr. Kilmer...I have bookmarked this page and will subscribe to your site....thanks for sharing your knowlege with the rest of us.
Mr kilmer i have honda city 2005 idsi engine 1300. When i bought i came to know that fan is direct and thermostat valve removed . Therefore car reduces 100 ro 200 ml coolant after abt 50km . Mechanic told me that cars head gasket might have damaged. But car is not showing symptoms like mixing of oil in radiator or mixing of coolant in oil chamber. Also car is not heating up on Ac and also starts well ,sounds good.. what should i do . Mechanic says that that removed thermostats valve is suspicious. Plz guide me what should i do . Mechanic says that headgasket changed in my car is not successful therfore we have to replace a complete 2nd hand engine assembly.
Exactly, there are NO ummm umm ummms, and he gets right to the point. He knows time is valuable and attention spans are short!
Well said
Yes, gets right to the point. Don't talk about the time they was picking up the kids from school and how they noticed something was wrong. Sat down at dinner had a talk with the wife if they should go to a shop or do it themselves. I be watching like, "get to the damn point."
I have a 2007 2.5 altima with a blown head gasket. I've watched 20 or 30 repair videos. None of the said remove the spark plug to find the leak. Then he said do the process without the plug in so it can repair that specific one.👍. Best one I've seen.
Man. UA-cam has helped people by the millions...thank God for videos like this!!
Put Bar Leaks product in my 2009 4 cyl. Camry after following all instructions and the car has been running fine. I told my wife to tell me when the white smoke (steam ) from the muffler stop. After 3 minutes the exhaust cleared and was normal. I checked the oil and it was normal. I was so scared when the water and the oil mixed but I stopped the car immediately. It was 9 months ago that i poured that product in my radiator and have driven 6 thousand miles. So far nothing abnormal. A couple of mechanics have asked me about fixing the head gasket a few months ago and I told them that I repaired myself with the help of a friend in the states. So far so good. Like you said : If you are low in cash, why not use that alternative. Thanks Kilmer.
Scotty is one of my top five! He is great. I have been following his advice for well over 5 years.
3M views in 14 years is just disrespectful for this quality of free advice!
An update: I was quoted CDN$1,800 in the summer of 2011 to replace the head gasket in my '04 Dodge Dakota. Instead, I put two bottles of Steel Seal in it (as per the instructions in this vid - well, almost - I didn't remove the thermostat as it is buried deep on this model). Nevertheless, it has worked great ever since and no burning of coolant at all. August 2011 I did it and it's worked just fine! Thanks again, Scoty. Airborne!
Albert Head you have a Dodge that’s why
Curious if that Dakota is still running fine with the Steel Seal?

Thank you Scotty Kilmer. I very learned a lot from you. You’re an honest mechanic. You’re helping millions of UA-camr.
SCOTTY NO!!!! You forget to put (or tell everyone watching) the thermostat back on!!!!!
Lol some people will actually go along doing just that. Hopefully they see this
Ya, this requires that one small re-edit big letter captioning [REMEMBER TO PUT THE THERMOSTAT BACK ON !]
Well, he didn’t put the gasket from the thermostat onto the housing, either.
They will figure it out when they have no heat!
As well as plugging the fuel injector back in.
I used blue devil pour n go in my 99 B3000 yesterday. After watching some negative reviews where the stuff crystallized and clogged up everything... i want this stuff out of my vehicle!.... days later... blue devil didnt work. Replacing head gaskets now. What a job!
So many idiots complaining about the sealer. Didn't he say this is a try if you don't have the money to replace gasket. Some people have cars not worth the value of replacing but can't afford a new one. This is by far worth a shot instead of being without a car. Some people are just ignoramus. To all you "mechanics" who are complaining to Scotty are you going to fix customers cars for free or the cost of the sealer for a new head gasket. If not then stfu! I can't stand people like that.

@vibhavarajaguru1894 I agree
this stuff works great.poured it into coolent without removing thermostat etc.let engine idle for 30 mns and added bit of coolent to bring level up.2 years on no coolent loss.
Did you still remove it he spark plug?
@@mig7543 not understanding about spark plugs??
Sometimes you have to bend the rules when your customer is in dire. Need of getting their wheels up and running due to financial issues and no car no job. It's worth it to take a chance and seal a intake manifold leak . If you follow. Through on using the sealer properly chances are good of success. The best repair is very expensive . Scotty. I enjoy watching your very well presented and educational videos. Keep up the good work. Thank You! You are a born educator no doubt!
Scotty, surprised that you failed to mention that a blown head gasket is usually a result of an over heated engine. Aluminum engine heads are notorious for warping under these conditions. I've replaced my head gasket twice on a '86 4WD Toyota 22RE & in both cases the head was so warped I seriously doubt a bottle of Steel Seal would have worked. However, your right, replacing it is a lot of work & can be expensive if you have a mechanic do it so it might be a viable option with qualification. Just read some of this thread, $100 a bottle ain't cheap. My last head gasket job, my cost, my labor, cost me $400, which included a complete gasket set (head, intake, exhaust, etc.) mill work on the head which included replacing a couple of valves & new head bolts.
Is everything you put on it absolutely necessary to the head gasket replacement?
@@Vanguard-gh8ovI know this is old but I'm going to see if my head gasket is blown this Saturday. I'll let you know how much the dealer wants to scam me for 😭

Dear Scotty,

I'm not a gear head. I really don't care much about cars, to be frankly honest. And this is the first video of yours I have watched, on a whim, while looking for information with how to seal a pressure leak on distillation device. But you have the absolute BEST editing to get your point across without moving so fast that nothing else is happening in the video. Also, the content you present is straightforward and entertaining. I'm going to subscribe right now, because I do like cars (they get me places) and even if I'm not enthralled by the content, I know that I'm going to love the presentation and editing!
Thx ... Yes 👍
I did this was a course a small leak
my reservoir was building up pressure and getting bubbles I knew there was a leak I tried this steel seal... And about the third time that I started it up and left it for half an hour or 20 minutes probably I left it and it got up at start climbing up in temp ...so then after the third time I put the thermostat back in and waited good hour and a half at the cooldown I started up it run for normal temperatures for about 30 minutes and after I put the thermostat back in... And I squeeze the hoses or no bubbles up in the reservoir it looks great I'll know for sure tomorrow when I take it out looks like it works tho . 🎉🎉🎉
I just used Scotty's method on my Land Rover LR2 with 130,000 miles on it. The 3.2 straight 6 cyl Volvo engine had coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant. First I tried Blue Devil and you are to run the engine for 50 min for it to work, but my LR2 overheated after 30 min and had to shut it off. Blue Devil you have to remove coolant and use straight water after flushing cooling system. Back to the drawing board. I figured Blue Devil did not work because coolant residue was still in system thereby not allowing the sealer to stick. I decided to look for a Head Gasket sealer that took less time than 50 min to work and also that would work WITH anti-freeze/coolant in the engine. I landed on Bars Leak Head gasket sealer with copper in it. Instructions said to only run the engine for 15 min with coolant IN for it to seal the leak. Wa-la worked like a charm!!! I used Scotty's method and removed spark plug #4 since that was where the leak was, unhooked fuel to that cylinder, ADDED coolant, plus removed thermostat ( which is a big job on LR2 since Intake manifold had to be removed to get to it) After first 15 min no more smoke, no more oil in coolant, no more coolant in oil, and did not even come close to getting hot. Temp gauge stayed at normal 1/4 in from bottom. Repeated the process of running 15 min, letting it set for 3 hrs, then running it again 15 min. Did this 4 times for good measure. It is fixed !!!
I used Bar’s Leaks Head Gasket Sealer on my 2010 Prius with 200,000 miles. Took care of the #1 cylinder misfire, engine shake, coolant in oil and coolant leak from a blown head gasket. Just poured it in and followed directions on can. Couldn’t be happier.
Damn Scott'y, I wish I had been watching your shows 4 years ago, some of your ideas are simply brilliant! So simple and clear minded but things you don't think of. I would have a lot less problems in the past. But I know now! I will watch all the time from now on, and simply THANKS!
I really don’t like using sealers but there was a tiny coolant leak in my cooling system on my Nissan Sentra. it would be low after like 4 days. So I knew it was small. I ended up using bars extra strength coolant sealant with the pellets And it worked perfect! Very awesome stuff
I recently used Barrs leaks, liquid copper to repair a head gasket leak, while on a road trip. I was very skeptical about its functionality; but since i had a new radiator put in the day before, i had nothing to lose.
I followed the directions and the darn thing worked. No more overheating.
Barr's leaks liquid copper worked for you correct?
Hey Scot just wanted to let you k ow for the past 2 years you've been my go to guide on ato repair and ever single time what you've said has worked lol much love brother

I never got a call.
The way that this guy talks and wave his hand pointing like that makes the video more enjoyable to watch :D
+Jethrospect_ no he just looks like a spastic to be honest
I really like this guy and know he knows his stuff. I say this as a mechanic myself. However, in a funny thought, I wonder if his neighbors are ever bothered by the streaks left in the road or the burnouts he does. 🤣 Overall, he seems like a great guy who cares about truly helping his customers the best way possible although I am strongly opposed to using head gasket sealer myself (again I’m a mechanic myself). I also don’t recommend it to friends who ask about it because I’ve seen how it clogs other parts in the cooling system such as heater cores. With that said, it can save a ton of money and get you out of a bind. I do not try to oppose him or go against his recommendations. This is just my personal opinion but I also admittedly have no experience with the brand sealer he used here. Keep up the great work and honesty Scotty! God bless you sir!!
No, he probably fixes their cars 😂
We love your show, has definitely saved my bacon a few times. You are definitely one of the first honest mechanics i have ever seen. Keep up the good work.

Hi David, do you flush the engine after using the sealer or do you leave it permanently in there?
I can just imagine the neighbours being awoken on Sunday at 7am:

Hi Scotty many thanks for your videos - very easy to follow, when i took my thermostat out it seemed to work better and the engine sounded better after running at idle for 20mins, (just waiting for it to cool down) there was a slimy clear gunk around the thermostat- can this cause head gaskets to fail also?
Thank you.. you're a very honest man..keep up the good work.
From personal experience. When it comes to blown head gasket and coolant leaks. It is a gamble. You drop $1000-3000 (depending on the car) and there is still a chance that there may still be a leak.
You have to find a great mechanic and catch them at the right time. If he decides to rush the job, and neglects to do any step properly, then its another trip to his shop.
Excellent response!
This job can not be rushed by a professional mechanic, period!
If your at this point of replacing a head gasket, might as well check the engines other components as well.
I Recommend taking the actual head unit to a specialist to inspect if the valves are not warped or damaged.
I'd be hijacking that fools bass boat until he does it again, and does it right with big $$ like this out of pocket. I ain't playin' either.
You’re the best Scotty and have helped a lot on a few repairs!
I sealed a Ford 6-cyl engine once with sealer, I was very sceptical. It worked and lasted about 3-4 years until I traded that car in. Obviously it's a crap-shoot, but worth a try compared to an engine gasket replacement or rebuild sometimes, particularly on a cheaper car.
Yeah same here, it lasted a few years till I made a long trip and it ruined both my head's lol

Liquid glass works the best..aka sodium silicate. Also blue devil works great.
Dbgrasshopper33 - They probably work well, but "my guy (lol)" recommended K&W HG sealer, said he used the BlueDevil without much success, stopped using it. You can find both BlueDevil and K&W at Pepboys. Just an FYI...
Blue Devil sucks. Spent $75 today, followed step by step, and my explorer still kicks out so much smoke. Doesnt over heat though. But still undrivable.
Doug styles - Before trying any "stop leak" formula I always advise. Checking the head bolts torque. In most cars is relatively easy and quick to remove the valve cover. So that's the best place to start, in conjunction with the stop leak I was able to "save" a lot of engines from a costly rebuild.
crpth1 ...Ended up selling it a week after that post. THANK GOD. First and last ford. And yes they were aware of the cracked block.
+Doug styles - Sometimes it's the best solution... :-)
Personally I never ruled out cars or bikes for that matter, based on brand alone. Since I passed the wrench and the engineering side of the industry one thing I learned is that ALL mechanical/electronic stuff will eventually have problems. Sometimes it's a design fault, sometimes it's just a production batch. Quite honestly doesn't matter which brand we talk about. By far the best thing to do it's to solve a problem before it comes up in the first place...Preventive maintenance sounds awkward but it's MUCH cheaper than solving a huge headache later on. Be well. ;-)

Hi Scotty, love your helpful videos. I do have one question: isn't it bad for your engine if you let it run for half an hour on only three cylinders?
Hi merde, looks like no body reply your very important question,it's really very bad to keep engine running with 3 cylinders, that vibration will help to misuse hundrunds of small parts Wich Scotty can't see And this reduce a lot the age of the engine and every thing related to the engine especially he saying keep repeating this many time and every time 30 mints, sorry as an engineer I can tell you this is wrong

I tried blue devil worked a Copley months n gasket blown gonna try k&w head sealant
its no work for me

Used blue devil as a cheap alternative, mix it with water only if y'all use a sealer. Lasted about 9 months but I'm pulling my heads off this weekend and doing the job myself. Just trying to find a good machine shop to get my heads rebuilt and resurfaced. Its gonna be so much fun 😭 this method works if you dont have money for a proper fix. Just do it right

Take the word "dad" out and call it being a man
Even if it doesn’t work fully, it seems like it could still fix a lot of the smaller leaks and you’d only need to replace the head gasket instead of multiple things? Definitely gonna try this.
Scotty is the type of mechanic to give you your car back with no engine covers or belly pan covers..
More plastic that will break
More water flowing on the engine, without cover. At winter, ice could build up at places you don't want to.
Károly Kiegel they didn't have them in the 60s, they don't need them now
You actually do need them, more MPG's and less road noise from the belly pans, and engine covers most of the time have insulation to make the engine less noisy like the powerstrokes.
David Robitaille
To be correct it depends on the blueprints.
Is it engineered there or not?
Had a problem once when the engine cover was missing.
Ice dropped the valve timing, by moving the timing belt mm-by-mm untill it set the valves to a faulty position. Engine lamp was lit, I couldn't accelerate or go above 90 km/h.
Had no warranty, repair cost was around 800 bucks. Engine cover cost around 20$.
Turned out, they didn't put that on in the factory. They checked the blueprints.
scotty question about when to put the thermostat back after the test drive or before? thanks as always for a great video and helping my old cars continue to run because of your excellent advice. do you have any motorcycle videos i could use some advice with my 2007 yamaha vmax that wont run when i close the choke.
after the test
Scotty.. I bought an older car and I was pretty sure they had put this sealant in it... I did a radiator flush and actually left it in too long and now it seems to have taken out the seal bc its blowing the radiator hose off pretty quick... I would like to keep it going for a long time should I go ahead and put the sealer in if id like to fix the problem. Soon as I can or should I just wait until I can do the big job.... I like to do things myself and my husband can borrow a hoist from his work or whatever tools I need. I've commented before on one of ur videos it's my 2003 pt cruiser... Well bottom line did the radiator flush having been left in too long in real the original gasket sealer? You think ? And if it did could the hole be too big to fix with sealer ... Ugh sorry I wrote a book here rambling....
Thank you Scotty! I feel reassured now since you have suggested a sealant.
I trust you.
When you poured the steel seal did you also top it off with coolant as well or just the steel seal
no just water
WOW, NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS,, GREAT VIDEO.
you talk funny but your very clear and concise scotty
This is why I love my air-cooled motorcycles.
No coolant to leak.
I can't find the head gasket or coolant in my 69 vw bug nowhere, but in my Cadillac DeVille I'm pretty sure I have a Head gasket because is blown, and no sealer will fix that, isn't it?
still could possibly happen though
Scotty....did you put the Thermostat back in the Car ---Later or NO ???
jjsiegal1 yes, about a week later when I was sure the sealer had worked
+Scotty Kilmer Did you also flush out the coolant to get the excess sealer out so it doesn't gunk up the cooling system?
Tyler Clark I would like to know this aswell
Scotty I trust you. I'm normally not a person to believe in magic additives, and anything that goes through your cooling system terrifies me. But I've developed a small leak in my CR-V's Head Gasket. The good thing is that I've caught it early before it's fully blown. I'm about to give this a shot because I know you know what you're talking about. Got the old coolant drained, #2 spark plug removed, and about to put the steel steal in now. Will update later with results.
Update: It worked for a day or two then catastrophic failure even though I followed instructions to a T.
First of all my heater core is clogged. Chunks of white residue are all over my cooling system even though I flushed the system again after the procedure to be extra safe. The head leak actually became much worse to the point that it won't even start half the time now and when it does there is so much coolant being burned and coming through the exhaust that there's a constant bluish/white cloud of exhaust. It was actually driveable before but now it's not. Now I'm forced to pull the head and replace the gasket.
I should have trusted my instinct on this.
Subaru owners: Steel seal AKA "Miracle in a bottle"
Spirit Hunter, did your subaru have an oil leak or coolant? Mine is a very small oil leak. Will this fix a small oil leak?
this is why I opted out of subaru. Can't suffer the expense of that inevitable day.
@@ShepherdTeam6 we are leaving Subaru and going back to Toyota! I have a cheap 2007 Forester that needs a clutch (and various other things). 😰
I removed spark plug and disengaged the cylinder and did what Scotty said in my 02 forester and I cooked my upstream 02 sensor and my entire catylitic converter letting it run on 3 cylinders. I was so pissed
@@matthewtvrdovsky7386 come on down to the dealership we’ll fix that right up.... hey its lookin like youll need all pads and rotors.... what do you mean your power steering worked when you brought it here?
Lol I have to laugh the way he throws the beauty cover as he calls it
woud this work on diesel as well?
nissan xtrail 2.2 YD22
Scotty, how long. Does that sealant work for instead of replacing the Head gaskets?
+Carla Aitken - Until you saved enough Money for a Head Gasket Repair!
@paul austin But maybe long enough to get another used car or get the down payment for a new car.
Scott cant believe that you recommend to use a sealer than getting the car repair the right way, my car use to loose water, had to much water pressure and time would over heat, I was going to use the sealer as you recommended but i took my car to a mechanics, He said just to change the head gasket would be 300 dollars but i did the whole head gasket kit repair which is the head gasket replacement and a valve job which cost me 795 dollars and now looks and feels like a rebuilt engine.
This Scotty Kilmer, even after 10 yrs there is no physical changes.... 😂😂
0:48 the real job begins
GENIUS move, removing plugs one at a time…just brilliant!
LOL. Are you being sarcastic?
Are you John Lennon's son? My god you look like John Lennon! 😎
Somebody said that on another one of his videos too. Lol. I agree too. I think had Lennon survived he would likely look much like Scotty Kilmer does now. He must get it a lot, cause we are not the first to comment this.
dmaninthewall lol
He looked more like the TV actor in the 70s invisible man TV show.
He is Killary Killton long lost lesbian twin sister.
Lol yes he do
I have a 2001 eclipse gt (v6 3.0) I went to change the crankshaft sensor because that was the code that was reading. I changed it and as I put on the timing belt back on I turned the car on to make sure it was on correctly. The car started but the tensioner was not put on tight enough and the timing belt jumped and now I can't get the car to turn on. I did some research and think the valves bent and was think I should just get the heads rebuild which would cost about $100 then just install it.
If you bent valves and even if you didn't, its going to cost more than $100 to fix.
Exactly...the motor is EFFED
Yeah, what you likely have is an "interference" engine. Their timing belt has to be exact and done in a certain way. I've seen it done on UA-cam and I was still not confident enough to tackle it. I took it to a Mechanic and $500 later I had a new perfectly working timing belt. I knew it was going, cause I could hear if flapping under the plastic cover and hitting it. Partially ripped, was my thought. Researched it and found out it was an interference engine. If the timing is off, like your belt mishap, the cylinder heads smash into the valves and bend them, yup. Cars with timing chains and non interference engines, don't have this issue and just stop dead if it's not right. No damage done. If the chain breaks or jumps if overevved (owned a Sunfire someone had done this to, jumped the chain and they were well known to do that if overevved) then it's a simple timing chain replacement at $120 (plus labour) and you might have to drop the engine a bit to access that bottom sprocket. Timing belts on interference engines are more touchy indeed! Screw it up and it's a costly repair.
Interference engines are "supposed" to be more efficient, but touchier if they snap while driving, or if someone has the unfortunate mishap you had. Sorry about your luck. That sucks man.
My mechanic is telling me that I need a full top overhaul because of coolant has bubbles and it is blowing the water out of the radiator. I wanted to try something I watched on UA-cam where you flush out the coolant and then put a head gasket sealant and let it run for 30 mins then repeat if for 5 times. Some of the comments said it worked. But with the symptoms my car is showing, do I really need a top overhaul or can I try this out first? I'm thinking that the mechanic might just want that extra job for the money. I will really appreciate your respone on this. Great vid and keep it coming buddy! Cheers!
Hello Scotty, I had only one spark plug with coolant on it (cylinder 5) and one that looked like burnt oil (cylinder 8). Both coolant & oil were on the threads of the plugs. I did a compression test and the one with coolant (cylinder 5) was the highest at 220psi and there were three others that were low at 130-145psi (cylinder 4, 6, & 7) all others were all at 180psi. My question is should I only leave the spark plug with the coolant on it (cylinder 5) when applying steel seal or should I also leave out the three with low compression also?
its been 5 years, hes not answering you ever time to give up on all of your hopes and dreams
I'm sure that you have already figured out your problem by now. But for anyone else: do not remove your spark plug *AT ALL*.
The sealer requires intense heat from the firing cylinder to actually work. Without this heat the sealer will not actully do anything.
That engine cover throw tho
thanks scotty on cheap vehicles or vehicle without much life left in them its good first step. I am pretty sure i got my truck and they did this to sell it . it drove 25 000 km but it needs it again i just hope the holes arent to big .
