As a non-mechanical person that was absolutely the best description I have seen of any video to give me a good visualization of how the head gasket works and the fluids that go up in between all those different holes
Quite often the HG will breach before it fully blows. This typically occurs between the cylinder and the coolant channels and doesn't result in a fluid exchange. What happens is the breach is too small to let coolant into the cylinder but upon acceleration, combustion gases get forced through the breach into the coolant channel. As the gas passes the temperature sensor, the temperature gauge on your dash goes up. Letting off the gas completely will stop forcing gas into the coolant channel and the gauge will slowly drop. The engine isn't actually overheating, but the HG is doomed. I learned this the hard way when I was younger and didn't know much about engines. Had a 99 Civic, It drove me crazy, I ended up changing all the primary cooling parts- fan relay, temp sensor, thermostat, radiator - which didn't fix the problem, and then someone recommended I get the radiator sniffed at a smog shop. Sure enough, hydrocarbons were present.
I was chasing misfires and hard starting in my 03 rsx s for a couple months.. Finally started losing enough coolant to notice and then got it in my oil, only knew because I check my oil pretty regularly. At 220k miles, a head gasket starting to leak is not surprising.
Think my bikes doing this. Cause it's not burning coolant still full. I mean the exhaust is white an when I turn the bike of it smokes white out the side i thinks bad. Oil looks fine but some going somewhere. It's coming out the top the head or something down the cylinder not alot. It's also watery oil. Fan rad sensor gone or fans gone idk guess ima figure it out one these days. Ima dump the oil first clearly an then from there I'll figure the rest out just hope I ain't gotta surface the block if I do have a gasket leak I know I do. It lost some power from start to end of summer about 5 miles an hour. So somethings going somewhere an it started over heating in the end if summer. I do think its blowing air in my antifreeze I got lucky it didnt blow blow or really mixed fluids thank god but I'll figure it out soon enough
Also read my 500ex motor goes 120k miles before needs anything. I was hard in the cold on first gear only so it probably didnt like that lol bike got 40k not miles an the head gaskets gone. Its 30 years old to so it's been here there sits starts you know they get old. If it ain't the head leaking is stuff up top it I think idk there 7 things gaskets right there could be any one of them
Actually it's more often cracked head than blown head gasket. Initial sign, in my experience is when you see vapor-like smoke coming from the coolant exp.tank, when you start the engine. Everything is fine, temperature is ok, hoses are ok, pressure inside the cooling system is ok, just there is some smoke there and you can see very thin skim, barely visible, floating on the coolant surface in the exp.tank. Be 99% sure that there is a problem with the engine's head or even a block. It is easy test to perform when you wanna buy a used car. Start the engine with the cap off the exp.tank and watch with the flashlight pointed into coolant. If you see a smoke after 3-4 minutes coming from there and more, if you see that tiny skim there, be almost sure that you are buying a huge problem. Just get away from that car.
04 GTO. I have a question. So I took it to a friend mechanic and he did the test where he took off the cap and started the car and all the coolant came out. Would this be a head gasket or something of that sort? I don't see white gunk, or milky oil, no overheating on the gauge (but I do FEEL it getting hot when I drive it for a while) and no white smoke. But it does struggle to start (sometimes it takes a couple tries sometime starts right away) and it's no the battery and I just put a new starter in, and some sensor on the throttle intake.
@@Superstuffed if it did that once or couple of times it may be just an air trapped in the system. It is different than that when you have pressure in the cooling system that comes from cylinders, which is constant. The warmer the engine the more bubbles you got there in the exp.tank. Most of cases it's cyl.head.
What if bubbles comes out and no smoke? I have I feeling when they changed radiator that they did not done it properly. If there is some air pockets it could produce same in coolant tank.I hear also water in cabine like there is some water flushing cause those pockets can be made everywhere especially when engine is big like 4.0 V6 from Toyota. The engine is running great, no missfire starts at minus like temps like hero and works like charm.
Recently I could smell coolant inside the car while driving, then later on I noticed that the coolant tank was empty. Then, when at a stop while car is in drive the car engine would shiver and hesitate. Last thing I did I checked oil and it looked drippy like part oil and part water. The car is an 03’ Mercedes’ sedan. I think it could be cracked block too or faulty expansion cap at least but, what do you think?
This happened to my car, had all the symptoms and I didn’t know but got it into the shop before it got worse. I’m sure in January when I got my oil change is when i now notice the first symptom of milky oil. Mechanic told me it could be from cold weather and roving short distances. Thank you for the explanation of the head gasket, I didn’t know the purpose of it.
Unfortunately I have a few of these symptoms a cloud of white smoke once in a while and loss of horsepower the car hesitates while accelerating down the highway it's really annoying but it's periodically.
@@ivanvalentin3898I have oil leaking in my spark plugs. Is that what it is lol? Only spark plugs 1, 2 and 3 I noticed when changing. White smoke is only on motorways as I slow down then to fast, say a roundabout. (Always topped up).
Hello, thank you for your video. Dear friend, I need to say that when the gasket on the cylinder head gasket burns, the water hoses inflate, and if water leaks into the cylinder, there is very little ice in the water, which makes us realize this damage faster.
My truck has been overheating, I have replaced the radiator, top and bottom hoses, thermostat, coolant reservoir, & water pump I do not have milky oil nor white smoke.
Mine overheats real in like a 30 minutes drive, and when I arrive at my destination I hear boiling water from the engine in the same time the water be dripping out what might be the problem?
Don’t forget #6 Extra coolant in the overflow tank but low coolant inside the radiator. That means the head gasket is allowing air into the system, which will cause the engine to overheat.
I just replaced a hose in August from a coolant leak. Replaced the water pump two years ago. And today the car was running hot. The coolant reservoir was empty. Let the car cool down Add coolant, and check for leaks. There was none. Drive the car for 10 minutes. The overheating indicator came on. Check No coolant, again. Let cool down again for another 40 minutes. Added more coolant, and drove the car under 40 mph. Made it home🎉 Let it cool down for an hour. No milky-looking, looking oil, no milky substance under the oil cap or the coolant cap. It's just weird.
This is a great video. My S10 is leaking oil, and I thought maybe it’s the head gasket, but from all you explained here, I’m having none of those problems. So you probably saved me some time tearing apart my engine for nothing.
Got new heads because it was blowing up my radiator. After the new heads I took a 3000 mile trip..it overheated. I immediately pulled over and let it cool. Kept coolant in it filling about 1/2 gallon a day. Never overheated again, but after sitting for 8 hours in 30 degree weather the radiator still had pressure built up in it. My mechanic is certain the heads are just fine and is replacing the bad radiator again. Thinking I want a second opinion on the heads. Ran fine, made it the 2500 miles after the overheating, but the pressure in the radiator has me worried.
Sounds normal to me though I'm not a mechanic but it makes sense that in such a complex system with air trapped everywhere that there would be a pocket somewhere. People advise you actually go back and fill the reservoir after it's been filled from empty after driving for 5 min.
I've got a 86 f150 and was worried this might be the case as I've replaced the radiator, timing chain, water pump, thermostat, and a couple hoses yet when i drive it it gets boiling water stuck in the reserve tank and I feel like a 5.0 v8 shouldn't struggle keeping 55 mph with nothing on it.
Getting my headgasket replaced and head skimmed. My symptoms was light white smoke out the exhaust when at a traffic light. No over heating. However, my car would sometimes start limping and misfiring (it's not sparks or anything trust me). The other thing is it was running pretty rich and guzzling fuel. Mechanic said I caught the failure really early causing a slight compression issue in cylinder 2. Coolant wasnt running out quickly but he noticed when doing the bubble test a bit of bubbling was happening. It is an MGZR which even though it had a headgasket replaced 40k ago, it wasn't a good one. They are skimming, cleaning and putting an updated, modern and better gasket in. I'm hoping this fixes my issues I should be getting it back tomorrow.. after spending nearly £1k on all these upgrades and repairs.
I have a question so I saw you said the car will over heat at any scenario on my case my car only starts over heating when I step on the gas temps go to up to 250 but it will cool down fast if I let it park and sit for 5 minutes or less my coolant temps drop to 199 I don’t have white smoke coming off my exhaust tips from that bit of information do you think my head gaskets are bad ?
Didn’t see any milky oil on my dip stick, but the oil cap was covered and my 2015 equinox had quit a bit of milky oil on the cap. Also burns a lot of oil.
I'm actually being forced to build the d16 I thought it would be cool to throw a rod or something in the stock motor before the swap lol. So right now think I just need some head studs and a clutch before I go at it, i might as well do that now while it'll be apart. Lots of holiday expenses are slowing me down a bit but it ill start tearing it down this weekend. I plan on doing a time lapse video. Thanks for watching
The white smoke is only when the engine is warm and it blows white smoke not cold right? My truck blows white smoke on startup but pretty much clears up at warm up.
Great vid. Very informative. I'm having overheating with my 05 Crown Vic police interceptor. Not sure if it's a head gasket bc there is milky substance on oil cap buy not on dip stick.
Very clear explanation. My car has the overheating problem because of the first reason you mentioned here. So,please advice about replacing the head gaskets. Thanks.
Nice video you got!. I changed my vehicle (es 350 2009) Top gasket due to over heating. After the top gasket burn. I replaced it and changed the radiator to double face and chnage the water pump. I further replaced the AC compressor. Is there any other advice you have for me? For now the car is very stable and I'm always watching the temperature.
add in there bubbling in reservoir also and radiator. If vehicle is warm and you have bubbles in the radiator forming and its pushing coolant out the coolant reservoir is a good sign as well. What happened to my d16y8 lol
@@BoBuilds Thanks allot i felt you was more thorough in your video, that helps out a whole lot as my car has most of these symptoms also water coming out the tail pipe, even tho it's turbocharged that wouldn't have anything to do with it i don't think, other than that would just be signs of bad turbo, whereas allot of these other videos just stuck a tube in the radiator, js. it's more to it than that why spend money on a tester when you can save it and put it towards engine repair great video now im certain what my engine problem is.
Yes I agree I has been the best explosions I've ever heard for a long time and I do have a blown head gasket I'm doing it right now on my engine but funny part about it my engine didn't misfire it rough idle little bit but it you stomp on it and it roared
I got a white smoke coming from somewhere down in my engine bay, a smell that I can’t quite figure out and my coolant ran down to empty, I put more haven’t driven since hoping it’s nothing too bad
2010 Prius here. Misfires and low coolant levels. Unfortunately I don’t have anything showing if I’m overheating or not. I’ve changed the spark plugs and next will be the ignition coils and I’m hoping that does the trick. I don’t have milky oil nor do I have smoke, could it still be that my HG is going? Or possibly just a coolant leak and bad coils?
my WJ 4.0 3 years no problem. Yesterday, pegged at 260. Therm good, sensor good, low coolant. Not going thru heater core do bypassed. Upper hose hard hot boiling water, bottom hose cool. So possibly radiator clogged, water pump shot or head gasket. Now like to mention I thought the radiator was leaking for a while . When the therm pops I can see a wisp of steam from the front but could never catch it to see where it comes from but even hot TX the engine stayed at 208. Will double check oil tonight to see if milky, maybe try to flush radiator. No smoke at all. Thought air bubbles but trying to burp it just comes boiling out. Seems as if water is trying to be pumped thru the motor bit once his radiator it has no place to go. But this from 1 day ok next minute 260. 1 weird thing I saw was once bypassed core and started I say a weird wisp of odd smelling smoke. Thinking it was just coolant burning off looked like right where valve cover was. Sort of like burned coolant with electrical burnt smell. Might be nothing but definitely not just coolant burning off on hot block.
Really, I appropriate your post, specially when I heard the 5th sign that is low power at starting due to miss fire and rough idle after started . because, my car is going on overheated and its has low starting while the cranking is perfectly. so that you proved to me that my head gasket was blown in the side of water system but not in the oil side. thank you so much
Yeah exactly mine too it cranks fine, it's not overheating but there's definitely a loss of power and the mayonaise mixture is there, also water is coming out the tail pipe along with the whitish blue smoke, allot of these videos didn't even touch on the stuff he said here they was using the testers in the radiator it's more to it than using testers.
Loss of power could also be a vacuum leak which is very common, or a bad injector or a bad intake manifold. The only sure way to know if it's a head gasket is the combustion test. The second best way is blue or gray smoke from the tailgate after it's running for a few minutes. The third best way is losing coolant but not seeing any leaks.
I got one that is stomping me and many others. Maybe you can help??? 2012 Charger with the 3.6 overheated almost 2 years ago from a failed oil cooler. Surprise surprise. Replaced cooler, radiator, hoses, thermostat and housing (multiple times), water pump and head gaskets. Still getting oil in coolant, but no coolant in the oil. Runs perfect for a few weeks and then starts to overheat. I can flush it all out and replace the thermostat again and it starts all over. No idle issues. Performance is fine. Any ideas? Appreciate it!!!
My golf 7 2.0 tdi have some simptoms. Hard start, white smoke, oil to high, water losing about 0,5L every 15 days. No overheqting or power loss. Its about a year with theese problems.
Can any of these symptoms come and go? And can you not have milky looking oil and still have a blown head gasket? My oil has always looked normal. But other symptoms are there .. anyone with an answer would be appreciated.
what may caused theres a symptoms a running rich of black water oilll coming alittle bit from the exaust? On mazda 2 hb demio model 2004/2005 and always getting overheat.. .. already change the radiator.. waterpump still have a pressure thermostart still looks fine since the water always getting absorbs from the radiator .. so heres the problem i caannot driveee a long way road.. unless im running it only near from place.
Might be the hose clamps not tight enough or keep coming loose. I had that problem on my car but couldn’t find a leak until i looked properly and there were patches that looked like dried up water, so i tightened the clamps around the bottom hose and haven't had to refill my coolant in over a year
So if I see oil mix with water you recommend changing the head gasket or the whole entire motor ? Btw it doesn’t have much oil , and I have a leak of water no coolant , I was thinking of pouring radiator no leak and after doing an oil change , send helppppp
My vehicle only blows white smoke when at initial start only but not when running or after start! It does not overheat. What could it be? And it only happens rarely
Yeah it definitely has to be the head gasket I have a 93 GMC Sonoma and it's overheating and eating up coolant but it's not leaking out anywhere there's huge white puffs of smoke when I crank it Aaron and idles rough after driving it so there is absolutely no doubt that it is the head gasket
hey BO Builds just a question i have a 2005 nissian altima i am getting a engine code P0303 missfire in cylinder 3 there is no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil the car does not overheat
What if I only have the last symptom? And the car eats oil like crazy. It’s not leaking anywhere. Just burning up. And it KEEPS blowing spark plugs. One of the garages we went to, said it was the head gasket??? What do you think? Oh and it smells like rotten eggs.

Man I literally showed my bubbling radiator in my last video, I forgot to mention that lol
Glad you added this . My cars situation currently. Hoping steel seal will fix it tomorrow 🤞
@@BoBuilds what's the title of the video showing the bubbling reservoirs?
My cars got all those symptoms
You need to get something for that cold or lay off the Coke mate 😂 very informative video though
Yes I agree I has been the best explosions I've ever heard for a long time and I do have a blown head gasket I'm doing it right now on my engine but funny part about it my engine didn't misfire it rough idle little bit but it you stomp on it and it roared
i have ALL the symptoms 🤦🏾♂️
I got a white smoke coming from somewhere down in my engine bay, a smell that I can’t quite figure out and my coolant ran down to empty, I put more haven’t driven since hoping it’s nothing too bad
My murano 2016 white smoke from exhust
Can a bad gasket cause over heating to the extent of radiator to leak?
Yes yes yes
Don't forget the bubbling in the coolant reservoir after shutting the vehicle down.
What if the milky looking oil is where you add oil on top of the engine, not the dipstick?
my WJ 4.0 3 years no problem.
@Jay Yoyo o ly thing left was the pump. It could pump, sort of. The impeller was so worn that it just couldn't push coolant anymore.
Great video
But cool thing is its possible to go from white smoke to flawless victory ,, if you catch it in time 😎🤓
thank you human!
My truck has coolet pressure buildup it didn’t start doing that till my radiator went out and I put a new radiator in it
I got one that is stomping me and many others.
When it’s January and the car smokes no matter what 😐
😂 thank you
My golf 7 2.0 tdi have some simptoms.
Same let me know if you figured it out because I have everything else but the milky oil
Good video 👍 , I hope you are feeling better sounds like you have a stuffed up nose or a head cold .
Mine is over heating and only blowing out white smoke
man i have all these LMFAOAOAOAOAO
My wife has a 2012 Toyota sienna she was told yesterday her van has bad head gasket they say it’s $4200 to repair is that close on repair cost
I have same issue bubbles in water nd my mechnic need to rebuilt all engine should i rebuilt all engine or just replace head gasket ??
what may caused theres a symptoms a running rich of black water oilll coming alittle bit from the exaust? On mazda 2 hb demio model 2004/2005
and always getting overheat.. .. already change the radiator.. waterpump still have a pressure thermostart still looks fine since the water always getting absorbs from the radiator .. so heres the problem i caannot driveee a long way road.. unless im running it only near from place.
My coolant is dropping slowly but enough that I have to top it up every 6 weeks. The mechanic has done compression tests and can’t see a problem.
Maybe check hoses for leaks?
@@hepzlawrence7710 the mechanic did change a hose but it’s still happening unfortunately. Feels a little slower but still there. Maybe another hose.
Might be the hose clamps not tight enough or keep coming loose. I had that problem on my car but couldn’t find a leak until i looked properly and there were patches that looked like dried up water, so i tightened the clamps around the bottom hose and haven't had to refill my coolant in over a year
@@hepzlawrence7710 due for a service in the new year. Will ask the mechanic to check them all. Appreciate the replies!
@@murphyebass7837 cheers mate hope you get it sorted👍🏾

Heater core failures caused by increased pressure in the cooling system
Very helpful
So if I see oil mix with water you recommend changing the head gasket or the whole entire motor ? Btw it doesn’t have much oil , and I have a leak of water no coolant , I was thinking of pouring radiator no leak and after doing an oil change , send helppppp
My car recently ran out of oil while I drove it. Should I change my head gasket?
Looks like I have the last two. How much does it generally cost
my 2001 camry needs its fixed
What if I only have the last symptom? And the car eats oil like crazy. It’s not leaking anywhere. Just burning up. And it KEEPS blowing spark plugs. One of the garages we went to, said it was the head gasket??? What do you think? Oh and it smells like rotten eggs.
