Hydraulic oil cap to fill is inside the cab on the left front above loder levers to drain hdy oil under the hdy oil filter on the frame of the digger. That frame besides the hdy filter is the hdy tank and that thing on the tank above the HYD filter is a hdy oil gauge half way on the gauge will be fine to operate I would not recommend opening that hyd oil filter the next time when you have it filled up as it will pour out. For loosening old nuts 1 loose and tightly over and over 2 heat it and cool it to brake the rust from each other 3 finely just go mad with it.
Ah thank you for the information!
I don't know if the physical pain you endured was worse than Matt's constant criticisms on the digger activities, either way it was highly entertaining as always! Great to see the online support getting those digger bits, only a matter of time until a door shows up i'm sure.
I'm glad you enjoyed it either way 😂
Yeah, it's been so nice to have the assistance to get back find the bits for the thing!
I think you need a matching series, "What's Working Now. " This may be a sseries of very short videos,, given your luck vehicles. Good Luck.
Sometimes it'll be a very short video indeed 😂
Being retired now, and a large ocean away, I can be perfectly happy watching you young fellows working so diligently; and not feel a bit guilty? Carry on, well done!
Trying our hardest achieving very little!
Right I’m subscribing, thanks to your live stream with Matt at Furious driving the other day, I enjoy the way you come across and enjoying the videos. Look forward to seeing more. Kind regards. Steve.
I swear I could smell the stank of grinding when you were grinding the rusty door
Mostly filler and paint 😂
Shouldn't the question be "Who's broken now?" Thought you might break Matt at one point. I'm sure that you have a source for your hydraulic hoses but just in case, Hosequip on Hythe Hill in Colchester used to be excellent. Take them a hose and the ends and they will make you a new one for a reasonable cost. Been a few years but it may help.
He was on good form that day 😂
Thanks for the recommendation - that's not too far from me either!
Great little update, great to see you got some sponsorship, let's hope a tool manufacturer sponsers you, as you seriously need some better tools.
That would be ideal 😂
Matt just bought a really nice set.
All rather interesting stuff. Thanks. Stay safe and be well.
Another fantastic video! Great to see your making progress on the digger! Also can’t wait to see when you get the dodge finished! It will be a fantastic fire engine! I remember when my grandad used to have one at Alford Fire station when he was sub officer there 😊
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I cannot wait to get the dodge done, but she's a while off yet. It will be quite the truck though.
Oh what did he have?
He had a dodge similar to yours, I don’t know it’s full registration but it started RSS, I would of been maybe 6 or 7 years old when he was in the fire service back then
Awesome to see the Dumper and the 48 working 😝
I'm just happy to have something that works
The arm rotating on it's own might be a leaky valve spool, not the actual actuator. The valves can be disassembled and there's refurb kits with all the required seals, rubbers and gubbins available for most types of valves. See if there's a local company servicing farm equipment. Those guys have probably seen and fixed it all in the past. Hydraulics are pretty simple once you just get wrenching. Don't be afraid to use force. It's all built to be serviced by the proverbial 200 pound gorilla, and there's not much you can break that's unfixable. I would however put on some latex or nitrile gloves when working with hydraulic oil. Contact dermatitis from chemical exposure sucks massively.
That would be good if it was. I don't much fancy attacking the actuator.
Good to know it should be somewhat simple to sort though.
We'll make sure we have gloves!
Excellent episode and the banter between you and Matt is hilarious! There must be something more satisfying than watching the Ruston doing some shunting, but right now I'm failing to think of anything, as it was a joy to see. I hope you charged your landlord at least £25 for the dumper duties... ;) Oh and my uncle used to drive road trains here in Australia... 🚛🚃🚃 🦘 Congratulations on scoring a sponsor by the way!
Matt was on fine form 😂
I love turning up and seeing the thing in use, it looks perfect at the MSLR!
I think of all the grief that we cause him, I don't think we could charge 😂 I was just happy to actually use it for something!
Oh that's awesome! They're quite spectacular things!
Thank you, it's just for this video, but here's hoping it leads to more!
@@lmm Yeah, I was admittedly joking about charging your landlord. It would just have been nice to see the digger break even or better on it's very first duty! :)
You guys are awesome and funny as all get out. Found me a new channel to watch.
That's great! Glad to hear you're enjoying what we do!
AutoDoc is the best place for anyone trying to keep their old car on the road at a low price.
I'll use that if they want to keep sponsoring us!
Glad to see you guys managed to get a sponsor out of your recent channel boom. Definitely deserved and will hopefully speed up some of the project, or at least lessen the financial burden.
We're really excited by the concept - they're only sponsoring one video for now, but we'll see how it goes. Hopefully they'll want to do more!
Have fun with the digger, lots of unique parts to play with. Make sure that both grease nipples on the hydro pump shaft work. Also drill steering uprights at bottom for grease nipples to complement the upper grease nipples, makes steering smoother and gets grease into them better. Only use hydro 32 oil in the hydraulic system, makes it more responsive. You put hydro fluid in the filter housing, the real oil level guage is the opaque pipe above that filter. You fill hydro through a fixture that looks like a mushroom ( breather ) just in front of the front loader levers. Just unscrew it and pour in oil , its a bugger to do.
Thanks for the info! On inspection you are correct! I'll be sure to check the grease nipples too!
As a Peugeot 406 (and ex 106) owner, I can say one or two thing about the 106: It may be the humidity doing its work with the car electrics, OR it's the ground wire. or both. I've had weird issues with my 406 when it's humid. I'd check the ground wire nevertheless. bad connection may just give you enough current to run the starter, but not actually have enough power to start it properly.
Oh thanks for the pointers!
That is the filter the tank
Bushing are gone in the front bucket
"That was stupid wasn't it" ROFLOL
I feel your pain with banging your elbow!
I was only working on that as they filled it from there in the scrappy 😂
Bushings are gone in many places really 😂
That did hurt!
Usually UA-cam sponsorships don't have such a great correlation to the video itself, good to see you've found a pretty practical one for these videos!
The story of the 106 not starting reminds me of an RX-7 a relative of mine owned; It would stall frequently (Sometimes on the highway!) but would always tick over happily at the mechanic's shop.
Lovely to see the Ruston shunting about! Was that a horsebox it was pushing?
It worked quite well! We were certainly very pleased with it!
Intermittent faults are the worst! What was it in the end with the rx7?
It's such a lovely locomotive to shunt with! Yes, we believe it to be the oldest railway horsebox in preservation!
@@lmm Well unfortunately, the RX-7 was sold off long before I could get my hands on it, though I guess that's probably for the best, since driving alongside a tractor trailer was apparently enough to stall it. It'd probably be a fun track car if it wasn't actively trying to kill the driver.
Seems like the ideal shunting loco, really, it has the exact amount of power you'd need to scoot things around.
And I just love that old horsebox, 19th century rolling stock is always so interesting to look at!
congratulations on getting a sponsor!!! cheers!!!!
It's just a one video thing for now, but we're still pretty happy!
Hi there, I see you were using WD40, you probably know this but it hasn't got as good penetrating properties as many others, but is a good water repellent. I use a product called 'super slaks' and it really is quite good. Love the channel, Keep up the good work. I've recently started my own channel, it's harder than I thought it would be, not in your league though👍👍
Congrats on the sponsor Lawrie, onwards and upwards mate.
Thank you, it's just for this video, but it's a very exciting start!
Good vid - not had much chance to watch much of your stuff recently (as most are over half an hour and I don't have that much time) but really enjoyed the catch-up. Your editing and general production values have improved greatly and you crammed a whole lot in (20 mins on one thing gets boring - I thought from your title it was just disassembling the digger!). Also massive congrats on the sponsor, and I really don't know how you managed to go through all that without any obscenities - there were at least 3 occasions where I think most people would have been reaching for the 'bleep' in the edit! Will try and watch more of your stuff going forward!
Thank you!
We keep talking about making shorter videos but people seem to enjoy what we're doing!
We're feeling very proud on how much the whole team has grown over the past 11 months.
It's been an amazing experience!
Yes well, the more sweary bits didn't make the edit. 😂
Lawrie has a sponsor, I was wondering when this would happen 😂 as for the 106, im going to put my money on crank position sensor, failing coil or worn fuel pump. Replaced all on 106’s and saxo’s for same reason.
They're only sponsoring this video for now, we'll see what happens though.
Crank sensor had my money on it too!
Great video Lawrie, but please please please please be very careful where you out your hand and yourself when pulling levers on your digger with all those leaking hoses! Everytime I saw you do it I was wincing - Google oil injection and be prepared for some pretty nasty accidents 😕
Having been around someone who had their hand over a hydraulic hose when it burst and injected into their hand its not a pleasant experience!
Great video tho, but please be very aware of the dangers with high pressure hydraulics - as an agricultural mechanic I've seen too many accidents over the years 🙄
In fact, it might be a good subject for a video maybe?! 🤔😉😂
I can imagine it's less than pleasant.
The worst hoses are now off and soon they'll be sorted!
We'll do our best to take care!
Don't know if it's the same idea as a JCB you pull the bolts lose and use the arm to side shift the boom I'm not 100% sure but I think that how JCB do it and most likely this works the same
I'm pretty sure you're right!
was going to say the same thing, though Lawries not got the back arm to slide the backhoe so he may have to use a ratchet strap (lubricate the slideways beforehand --- Wurth hs2000 is good but spray chain lube will do).
My 106 did the same thing. Somehow I’d reversed the vacuum lines that ran to the air cleaner, I swapped them over and it started first time after that.
Maybe it's a vacuum issue then?
Not a clue
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels - there are two pipes to the right of the top of the air intake on the throttle body, one of these may have split? Worth a look.
If you haven't figured out the issue on the massey yet. The issue is your hoses are dry rotted and since it sat in the weather for so long my best bet is your "O" Rings are dried and cracked. That means you'll need to take the assembly apart to replace those, with the pistons its better to replace them than to replace the seals. That should get it working.
Yeah, we've got Ash on it now. He's going to take it apart and get things moving.
My 106 had the same problem, it was the main wiring harness PLUG on the ECU that was not aligned properly
Ooo, I'll give that a check! Thanks
@@lmm there should be two white mark's that line up
ATF in a squirt can is better lube for old bolts and screws better then wd40, adding acetone makes it even more powerful.
Thanks for the tip - we'll try that next time!
To move the side shift once the bolts are lossened you use the arm to pull the mount from one side to the other.
The linkages should have only slight motion side to side ,more would be due to worn bushings , or pins. , or both and housings all can be replaced or welded .
Yeah, someone else said that in the comments - I wonder if the bolts will undo 😂
I think it may need several new pins and bushes everywhere are going to be worn.
Oval shaped in fact 😂
@@lmm correct as things that dig in dirt and then aren't greased or oiled or fixed you end up with everything being severely worn .It all can be set right but the total cost of rebuilding will be substantial .
Is the 106 singlepoint injected? Sounded like it was flooded to my ear, not sure if the garage just started it and went "oh, well it's fine" but if they did find another garage to diagnose it. Intermittent faults are tricky but I'd start with looking at the coolant temp sensor (and the reading at the ECU to verify wiring) as well as TPS on the throttle body & lastly possibly a sticky/weeping injector.
I agree, it very strong smell of unburnt fuel.
Yes, that's the concern, but hopefully they'll sort it it. Once it's got some life back in it I'm happy to do some diagnostic work 😂thanks for the pointers!
The hose on the loader. Those are called "field servicible" hose ends. You literally took the end of the hose apart. Both ends have what looks like JIC flare fittings on them. You'll have to go back and get the bit on the end of the steel pipe a bit farther up than where you took it apart. I am a heavy equipment mechanic. Trust me...
To move the backhoe, loosen the bolts on the frame and push or pull the backhoe along the frame to where you want it, using the bucket. You will find it practically impossible to move the backhoe by hand?
Yeah I hear that's the way to do it! Thanks!
Is that 20k subscribers or 20k different bits of projects on the go at once?🙈 Love this channel, please keep up the good work and great videos
To be honest we're probably getting close on both accounts 😂
We'll certainly try our best - glad you're enjoying what we do!
Fixing ram on digger is easy enough u screw end of the ram and pull the plunger out, measure the seals just order and replace.
Oh awesome! That sounds pretty simple
@@lmm it is, but make sure you have taken off all hydraulic pressure before unscrewing the cap. The results can otherwise be explosive (no, it wasn't me. I was 20 feet away laughing my ass off once I knew the guy was ok)
There are a couple of good videos out there too on replacing seals in cylinders.
This was uploaded at 6:20 in the morning but I’ll still watch it
We're pretty amazed that we're worth watching that early in the morning!
Sorry it's a bit late, massive Internet issues today in the UK.
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels it’s ok it’s because I live in Saskatchewan Canada
Is it just me or does that license/number plate (TUX306J) call for a photoshoot with Lawrie in a tuxedo riding Viking around when it's "finished"
That sounds awesome.
Consider it done 😂
@@lmm 20K subscriber special?
Have you thought about an impact wrench and some plusgas? I find its excellent for undoing things that don’t want to be undone.
Yeah, I was using our little impact gun in the video. What's plusgas?
It wouldn't shift one, and the others we didn't have an impact socket big enough!
plusgas is a spray penetrant / lube that actually works
Your gonna need to get some big impacts and a few other tools.
Kick the fuel tank when it doesn't start, often crud can get stuck on the pick up and prevent full fuel flow, hence why it's intermittent, better after being shook about on the way to the garage and kind of fires
Mmm, that's a possible cause too!
Another great video Lawrie
Thank you!
Next episode of what's broken this week, Matt is missing along with the tools he's been hiding from Lawrie lol
Keep up the great work lads, highly entertaining,
Rick B aka Plastic butcher
Glad you enjoyed the video! Matt's got better tools than me, he doesn't need to hide mine!
I have to agree with Lawrie a road train is the Astralian truck traveling across the vast Astrlian outback. Were as the road train in a Britsh seaside town or in York for the NRM is just a Tractor dressed up like a train and it doesn't even look like a proper train at all.
Good man! Glad you agree!
You undid the wrong bit of that hose! Those two piece fittings have the centre part that screws into the hose and the shield that goes over the outside of the hose. Instead of uncoupling from the ram, you undid the actual fitting on the hose.
Also, for the brake parts, and other parts for the tractors, have a look at Vapormatic. www.vapormatic.com/
Ah, whoops. Thanks for that! We'll rectify that 😂
lawrie the 106 probably a water electrical problem.. buy some silicone spray and do the cap rotor and coil wire leads or better yet just replace them ..if it isnt that its nightmare electrical diagnosis time good luck and thanks for the video
She's injection, but water could be an issue. We'll see what the garage say!
@@lmm intermittent electrical i would go with the high voltage side of the ignition system and moisture as ath issue ..ive been there 79 wv rabbit gti that was a rare beast . second possibility a relay in the ignition system is failing
@@mobiousenigma 75% sure it's a bad fuel pump relay.
@@SantaClaw another possibility isnt chasing down electrical problems fun lol
Hey I have a stubborn flywheel on a 1940s lister D type engine as the key was cut in half and to try to remove the key we drilled it out but it's still stuck
Oh that sounds a massive pain in the backside!
don't feel like the lone ranger. i went to push some snow with my 33 on tuesday, and a hydraulic hose exploded, spraying me, and everything in the vicinity with hydraulic fluid. i just got a new hose yesterday. also i got a suzuki quadrunner last weekend at an auction. it has a plow blade attachment, and ran at the auction. but once i got it home, it has no spark. when it rains, it pours.
Wow. You make me feel better about the stuff going on here!
@@lmm you need some pb blaster to spray on the rusty nuts to help you get them loose without breaking them. best stuff there is.
Good job ill try and source a website that sells the hydrolic rams and comment the link on the next vid
Awesome thank you!
It ok
What is the part number?
With regards to the 106, have you thought about the coil packs being on their way out?
The thought had crossed my mind ya
2:14 sounds like the intro to a Hawkwind tune lol Edit- actually kind of reminds me of Pink Floyd- On the run as well.
A hahahaha, now I'm a musician 😂
@@lmm Yes, another thing to add to your growing CV. Mind you, sounds of a workshop are music to my ears anyway!
if battery slightly duff, so volts drop below chip spec ( 12 v ? ) when statrer drawing massive curremt, things not go bang due to chip not functioning...older chips don't function at less than 12 V
The battery seemed alright, I mean the thing spun over happy enough!
@@lmm yes it did, however that's not what Colin is saying. He is right, on a small car especially, the starter can spin well on a partially duff battery, but not enough volts to kick in the ecu. Before spending money just TRY another battery. If it saves you pounds on coil packs etc then thank Colin. I am just backing him up based on experience. Cheers Guys
At 23:54 i belive the safety valve lifted 🤣🤣
You need to go online and look for a rust penetrant product called (Free All)! It is far better than WD-40 and even better than PB Blaster!
Apparently a mix of about 80% Vegetable Oil with 20% Acetone makes the best and cheapest penetrating oil. You might want to mix up a drum and call it "Lawrie's git'er dun!"
I quite like the sound of this 😂
How the hell did you not squash Matt? Lawrie you have the patience of a saint! If that was my little brother he'd have been cable tied to an engine crane beam and ratchet strapped and gaffa taped in place!!!
"What's broken now?".... Lawrie is!
It's because he's quite useful to have around, and I do kinda require him to keep coming back!
On a positive note, the oil leaks will help preserve the metal...
It's very well preserved in places 😂
17:34 stayin' alive, stayin' alive!
Hehehe 😂
Its a shame im so far away from yous.I'd give you a hand with the excavator.Watching you fight with the hydraulic swas painful to watch lol
It was painful for us to experience too! 😂
While I do enjoy the videos, I have two pieces of constrictive criticism. First is that the audio is sometimes very difficult to hear when the camera is not up close to the action. Also, one project per video. I was really enjoying the MF teardown and then BOOM, the action went inside to the tractor. With that being said I am enjoying the videos during quarantine
try psv glazing for your glass
Thank you, we shall!
I would suggest lookup billstmaxx both on youtube and facebook ~ part of his job is gravedigger in Candia thus he knows a lot about diggers etc - I would hit him up asking any question you have and he also made a lot of videos over the years fixing/serving the cemetery digger .... also he has a few vintage tractors and other type machines as well
Oh that's worth a shout - thanks!
You have a digger. It’ll be easy to. Hide Matt’s body. LOL
Once he's helped fix all the leaks! Yes!
If the rubber outer coating is coming off you DO want to replace them ASAP.
We're working our way through!
I hope Matt's got good life insurance.....taking the piss out of someone with big heavy tools is never a healthy idea 🤦♂️🤣
Unfortunately he's quite useful, and he knows I need him 😂
@@lmm I've seen how handy it is to have Matt around the place, especially with the Celica and on the economy run.....I've never seen that before lol
The Sticker on Redroofs doot was put on midway through its career, I believe it’s former colour was full red however Greater Manchester fitted that livery on most of their pumps, early 1990s, I suggest visiting Fireflashdelta64.co.uk as they have intense archives on Greater Manchester’s engines
Thanks for that, I'll check it out!
Lawrie it would be awesome if you would get some sort of P.O. Box so that your followers could gift you some tools. As I’m sure you may know we call mole grips vise grips in America and I would really enjoy sending you a nice vise grip brand to replace your now broken ones. American made vise grips have a fantastic mechanism and won’t pinch your hand and or break even when severe beatings.
We've been looking into ways of doing it, hopefully we can set it up next year.
Those vice grips sound amazing, drop us an email at Lawrie@lawriesmechanicalmarvels.com and we'll work out an address to send to! Thanks!
French car life it's not working take it to a mechanic it works. My Citroen Berlingo Muiltspace is doing that now I drive bucking and losing power take it to the mechanic left it with them for the week ran perfect.
To give the car its due, it's the first non start in over 100,000 miles, so I really can't complain!
I was expecting Lawrie to snap and attack Matt at any secind, lol
Unfortunately he's quite useful, I need to keep him around 😂
And Matt knows this and is able to get away with it with no consequences.
Afraid so.
12:25 I’m proud to say I’ve helped buy a broken vehicle
Thanks for being part of the adventure! Better this than cut up though!
Put some easi start in the air intake
That's the last resort 😂
@@lmm my grandfather told me a story about working on diesel tug boat engines, where he was told to take the boat from Greenwich to margate, and after he'd left Greenwich the piston rod broke in one of the cylinders. It got towed back to Greenwich and he fixed it, 40 years later he found out somone had put too much ether in the engine and it had run bezerk before the engine had been shut off, and no one would touch the engine after that

I don't disagree there!
I'm quite shocked by the amount of innuendo in this episode... So far I've heard Lawrie say "Hard on", "This nut is very hot" and "I pulled it too hard" (coupled with a reply of "Did you get it off though?" & i wasn't even looking for innuendos... That's the joy of manual labour though, so many bad puns to be made even if you're not trying. Might i recommend a little lubricant to save wear on your elbow before busting a nut in future? :D Sorry, and hope the elbow is ok!
Oh dear 😂
It's a good episode then 😂
They all had copious amounts of WD40 on them. Still didn't work 😂

The "slew pot" design that MF used on their back actor wasn't the best design.
Both JCB and Case had better.
