I've got an Instagram! Keep track of what I'm up to with Lawries_Mechanical_Marvels - Авто та транспорт
DUDE! Starters get VERY hot very quickly. Never crank more than 10 seconds.
It was more frustration at that point. Trying to get the thing to prime is a nightmare.
Hey Lawrie, I found your channel and cant get enough. Thanks for your strange equipment videos, I love steam, locomotives, and listers and I really like your presentation.
Thanks for your cool channel!!
Glad you're enjoying it! Lots more good stuff coming up!
Hello @@lmm
24:00 Rear drum brakes should be self adjusting. HOWEVER, they don't work like disc brakes in that manner. They have a little lever that spins an adjuster to tighten them that usually only activates in reverse. A few good stomps while backing up will do it. The adjusters are also accessible from the rear of the wheel through a little hole and can be adjusted manually if they seem loose (see 28:00, being done manually on your tractor).
Ah thanks for that!
Hi Lawrie. I came across this video after stumbling across your little dumper video. I live in North Norfolk and my uncle was a ratained fire fighter with Norfolk Fire And Rescue Service here in North Walsham. We had a Dodge stationed here. It's great to see one of our old appliances in good hands.
She's in somewhat good hands - at least she's in he dry. We had her up that way a few years back, we'll take her back home over the border when she's working again!
Those rusted bolts for the fuel tank/fuel pump, what you need is a spray can of (Free All rust penetrate HD) also you need a power probe 4,
to test fuel pump relay! works on trucks!, cars, tractors! And anything else that is 12 or 24 volts!
Thank you, we'll aquire both!
Nice video as usual Lawrie.
Shame Jupiter just didn't want to play ball in the end, but my god her engine sounded good when she eventually roared into life.
As for the helping yourself to bits from a scrapyard.... been there before.
Went looking for a breather hose for a Fiat Seicento Sporting MPI engine & at the time the MPI engine breather hoses' were rarer than hens teeth, could get the SPI ones ten a penny, but the 2 hoses are a different design.
Went looking for other bits in a scrapyard once & spotted a Seciento, opened the bonnet & found the right breather hose, said hose went in my pocket very quickly, but bought other bits for friends.
Be good to see when you eventually get Jupiter on the road again
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I got a mouthful of diesel getting her bled up. It was deeply unpleasant. Was lovely to get her running again though.
I enjoy going hunting for bits. Alot of Jupiter's interior came from that scrappy - they're super guys, and they've got a tonne of spares.
I'm looking for xyz, oh yes we've got one here.
It's worth pointing out that when I do purchase everything I liberate from the various vehicles.
31:50: We really don't want to drill down into the fuel tank, because that's a recipe for disaster. (fiery death actually).
We were being very careful, being very wary of fuel vapour and not wishing to explode!
But he has two fire trucks - right there - just they don't pump water t the moment.
It's the thought that counts!
Well that’s why they call it a fire engine
I found myself properly sat with my clenched hands in front of my mouth hoping and willing for the old boy to turn over... that's not normal.
Shit got damn I was relieved when she turned over.
Oh that's totally normal for us! She really was a pig to start that time.
Starts all happy now though!
If you drive up to a fire plug and see two plugs witch one do you plug into? Ones ahigh press system for factory fires the other is regular servive
You should definitely try Hydraquip, if you stop off at their shop they can make up pretty much any hydraulic or air line for you, including fittings and threads
Thanks for that. I'll investigate!
Try pirtek they make hydraulic hoses
Cheers for the recommendation!
Only problem with places like that they tend to cost a fortune. I do think they appreciate the occasional challenge tho, I had what seemed like the entire shop walking by when I was trying to get a standard air fitting attached to my scuba reg (Very quite and quick way to fill tyres after off roading)
We'll have to shop around I guess.
I suppose something different is exciting!
that's an interesting song jupiter sings as it cranks without starting. i understand the joys of trying to find nonexistent parts for obsolete vehicles. i had a 1967 yamaha big bear scrambler i got for a song, but was missing a few things, external plastic oil lines for one. after looking for two years with no luck in finding them, over the winter, i traded it for two 1981 yamaha sr185 exciters, with three engines. it's a wise man who knows when to cut their losses, and move on. i learned the hard way.
Jupiter is full of weird noises, some good, some concerning.
I'm a far more, sod it it's going to work kinds guy, Jupiter especially isn't going anywhere - despite all the issues she brings.
It's always disheartening trying to find the bits.
@@lmm i wish you luck in your quest, good sir. try chatting up retired firemen and municipal maintenance workers. they might have some insight on where your lost bits could be found.
Suffolk and Dennis RS130, im in Essex and my grandad has a Dennis RS133 V8 640 with Allison gearbox...
List of issues:
Throttle has gone awol, you get around 10mph in 1st gear, i think its to do with the rear throttle too
PTO wont engage, it is just stuck not quite sure whats going on there (maybe its just stiff and i dont want to break it..)
Self lubrication system for chassis grease has gone bad pipe come off grease everywhere..
I don't think mines got a self lubricating system. The issues all seem sortable on yours though!
I'm not sure if you're just the king of procrastination (leaving it until 15 minutes before you need to leave to fire the thing for the first time?!) or Jupiter just hates you and/or everyone in general. Honestly at this point I'm sort of leaning toward a combination of the two.
Also, you have intrigued me with the tale of the 1912 Fowler diesel locomotive...a lost engine no less. I didn't even know diesels were made that early: the first diesel engine of any type in the United States was in 1923(?...I'm a steam guy I don't know diesels, lol). so that seems amazing. future Lawrie Goes Loco Fodder perhaps?
It's just time, and unforseen things coming up.
Very much a oh that doesn't need much to sort, then a ah, this is going to be way more effort than I thought.
The fowler will hopefully appear on the channel before too long!
Nice video, I think the sound issue was the audio from the ruston shunting the wagon, appeared on the MR2 section, still a good vid though, keep it up.
Yes, I think that's what's happened. The team are working on a solution.
It would get you back on the road we often did that job on Dennis eagle bin lorrys and was a great success
Oh really? Maybe should have 😂
That blue cab looked like a Bedford TK from behind, I haven't seen a Dodge 100/Commando with rear lifting panels like the TK did :/
Yeah it was actually if memory serves - the dodge cabs were all together.
WOW what a battery! crankity crankity……..
Did the job!
Kind of reminds me of a video I saw once of an American Locomotive Company (ALCo) S-1 diesel switcher that was getting its first start in several years. it sort of just sat there and cranked over spewing smoke out...they don't call ALCos "Honorary Steam Engines" for nothing....and making that same noise. I believe there's at least one similar engine preserved in the UK? used to work for Yoeman if memory serves.
That's the same with alot of older diesels in the UK, they produce clouds of smoke when they cold start, especially if they've not been run for a while.
Yes, I think it's at the Nene Valley railway.
@@lmm huzzah, I got something right for once! XD
That lorry scrapyard looks amazing! Where is that?
It's not far from Ipswich. Very helpful staff if you're looking for bits.
Fuel pump relay or Fuse.. id go for on the Supra. Also i think they had Fuseable Links at the battery connections that feed the fuse box ?
Oh that's worth checking out, thanks!
There should be at least 11.8V to the pump. The relay is unlikely to be the problem, it’s more likely the fuel pump is faulty or bad connection in the loom. This assumes that your battery isn’t knackered. Might be worth putting a battery straight onto the fuel pump directly and not going through the relay. Once you’ve proved the pump isn’t the problem, start going through the wiring. Good luck if you have to replace the pump.
We'll make that our next stage and see what happens. I'm hoping for wiring fault rather than pump. I do not want to replace that 😂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels Replacing the whole tank may be easier if it is the pump. However, when you do get it on a ramp, I hope the rusty pump situation doesn’t reflect the chassis condition.
I have a horrible feeling about that...
@@lmm oh dear. Can you get a replacement tank with a decent pump? Assuming you've had it on ramps now and it's structurally sound?
We've not. We're very concerned 😂
I have an 85 Dennis Jupiter V8 Perkins Motor . Down here in South Africa spares is very scarce . I need a door lock for the rear door Right hand side / Any hope of getting one in the UK?
There are some door handles in scrapyards. Drop us an email and we'll see if I can help.
I'm not sure your Dodge would have had a Renault badge on it. Don't forget, being a fire engine there is a big lead time on building them so the actual chassis and cab are probably quite a lot older than the number plate suggests. I think the cab you got the Renault badge from is quite a lot later than Redruth. Often an easy way to tell is if the radiator grille has the triangle moulded into it for the Renault badge to sit on. If it doesn't then your truck probably never had the big Renault badge on it...
Oh she did have a badge, I've a photo of her ex works with one, and the nice plastic trim has the space for it.
Yes, that's true, Jupiter was ordered two years before she was actually delivered.
@@lmm That's fair enough. I thought the vehicles with the Renault badge started in late '86 for the '87 model year, but clearly not...
Well, if is a '86, so you would've correct there?
@@lmm Late '86 would be D-reg onward...
Oh.. Well.. I've no idea 😂
I hope you can make a video going in to a bit more detail about Jupiter, what exactly you were you doing when trying to bleed the fuel. What's the process? Is that red switch significant? What made it suddenly go, you didn't say after all that drama! I gather you have owned her for a few years, so Im guessing the compressor head failed after you became the owner. Is there a storey to that? The fuel and air issues, are very interesting and if you could explain a bit more about your fault finding it would be appreciated. I have a lorry that needs the fuel tank replacing, and im trying to learn how I could bleed the system after wards. I think iv watched all your videos, apologies if its covered somewhere. Also, re your Dodge, you should watch a series from UA-camr D3Sshooter called 'Old Rusty' where he repairs / rebuilds a very rusty cab from sheet metal. Thx
We'll cover Jupiter in more detail one day, basically, I ended up sucking diesel up the pipes to get it to bleed up.
Red Button works the cold start.
The compressor was probably going when I had it, but failure truly happened in my ownership, water and oil mixed and blocked the air line causing a rupture.
Fuel, it had a constant dribble, so air was able to get in, and fuel run back.
Now we've taken bits off to get to everything like the bleed off return pipes, and tighten then, we seem to be moving forwards!
11 quid for the bleeder valve? I thought 8-ish at the dealer was too much, and ended up buying some for 3 a pop from a motorcycle repair shop. (!)
I do buy some of my parts at the dealer, and some online, good thing I have access to their parts inventory thing so I can compare prices. :)
That said, if you need some hints on the 106, feel free to ask, I know them pretty much inside and out.
Yes, I felt a bit ripped off, but needed it sorted.
She's been a bit reluctant to start recently actually. Any hints?
@@lmm
A few things you could try come to mind:
-turning they key on and off a few times before actually starting it, if that changes anything, the fuel might be draining back into the tank. Not the most likely one, but it's free and easy to try.
-The coolant temperature sensor (green plug on the thermostat housing) might be bad. I've seen several of them fail, enough for it to be a pattern.
Try unplugging the sensor before starting to see if it makes any difference. Unplugging it will give maximum cold start enrichment.
If you have a multimeter, it should read about 2-2.5 kOhm when at room temperature and about 350-400 Ohm when at operating temperature, when measured over the pins of the sensor. (the values aren't exact, more of an order of magnitude thing, since it depends on the temperature.)
This sensor has a huge influence on mixture control, and if it thinks it's hot while it's not, it's really rather hard to start cold, and/or might stall easily or unprovoked while cold. People often start throwing spark plugs and ignition parts at it, which makes some (if they were also bad) to no difference.
The opposite can happen too, where the car is always in cold start enrichtment, the only symptoms then are excessive fuel consumption, higher idle RPM and higher emissions at MOT, which get blamed on the Cat or Lambda and probably sent quite a few cars to the scrap for expensive/'unfixable' emissions issues.
Replacing the sensor is an easy job, and it should cost around 4-6 pounds online. 10 or more is probably too much.
-Crank angle sensor. It's a bit of a hail mary, since there's no real way to diagnose it if it's not failed outright and it's somewhat pricey, but it controls spark timing, fuel pump relay, fuel injection timing (depending on model).
The strangest one I've seen, it caused a no-start if battery voltage wasn't high enough during/due to cranking the start motor, it started perfectly when push-started.
The first step is to clean it, there might be a buildup of metal dust and grease/oil on the magnetic tip of the sensor, without gunk it's probably better and that costs nothing.
The best/cheapest way to test it is to find someone else with the same car and swap the sensor over.
I think they cost around 35 pounds online? I never actually bought one, I just get them from the scrap yard or a spare engine. Sold a few for mates rates to people with mystery non-starts.
I can probably think of some more things, but these are what I'd check first.
Thanks for this, we'll have a gander!
Get shut of the RS they were a bit of a lemon. Get an SS, they still have galloping door rot but at least the cab tilts. Better still go for a Sabre XL they go like a rocket, really stable and a good ride.
Hi Lawrie, I've been watching your shows for quite some time and I'm a fan of the way you do the shows :) The only drawback is your sound quality. I work in a private radio station in Switzerland and I would like to offer you the opportunity that i enhance your audio, especially the conversations, if you like :) Let me know if you would be interested :) Of course I would do this without costs, I would like to support your channel :)
Hello there, this would be something we'd be very interested in, we know sound is our weakest point. Would you drop me an email at Lawrie@lawriesmechanicalmarvels.com and we'll discuss?
Thank you!
Do you ever prime pump before starting after siting for awhile.
I’m sorry prime fuel pump before starting.
Yeah, we tried, there's a little lift handle to try and prime it up, but after a hundred lifts my finger was really aching!
😎😎😎👍
👍
Scared the shite out of me at 25 mins.
Yeah, we're working on that - sorry
I wouldn’t wanna pay your oil bill 😂😆
I'm dreading filling it!
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels I don’t blame you 😂
I’m so cheap I can’t be bothered to buy coolant and antifreeze 😂😂
You have some weird sound issues around 25 - 26.5 minutes
Cheers, I think Matt has got to the bottom of it now.
What show was you trying to make it to?
There was one at Haverhill - Jupiter used to work there, so I really wanted to take her to her old home!
@@lmm ah awesome i went there few weeks ago for the vintage vehicle day in a carpark.coukd be the same?
Yeah, probably was!
Make a hyd hose to replace the steel pipe
Pretty sure there is a proper one somewhere..
I didn't receive a heads-up from UA-cam about your new video, Clovis‼️ How am I ever going to be Number 1⁉️⁉️😫😫😫
Yeah, none of the team got a notification either. We're just as confused as you.
@@lmm As confused as me⁉️‼️ Bloody hell, I didn't realize it was that bad‼️‼️😧😧😧
@@lmm Didn't show up in my subscriptions either. Have you accidentally unticked this box? imgur.com/a/sAduPik
ESP works for me 👍👊
@@CowboyCarCrushing Of course it is‼️ Gosh, I should have seen that one coming⁉️🤔🤔🤔
Are you going to be showing anything at palgrave show in 2020
I hope to, too soon to know atm, hopefully Jupiter, hopefully tractor/s
The 106 snuck in 2018!
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels I hope to get a fordson major project I hope to be able to show it.
Please mount your speaker closer to your voice as I can barely hear you, I know that you want good videos. AS for swapping this for that, I would delve into a proper ho to book and see the short comings before they come down on you. Big red behind you seems a proper truck, what is it used for. Air systems are pretty straight forward so start at the compressor and work your way to the tank holding the reserve air. Also lube up any valves like the brake valve under pedal so it doesn't leak or stick. the rest is easy. Fix all small air leaks as three or more is one large leak. Your truck doesn't resemble any fire trucks I have seen. It looks more like a service truck. No matter, grease, wash dirty hand prints off and keep everything clean as possible and good luck
We're trying to work on our audio, sorry its not up to scratch.
We'll sort it out, it's been done, and it's going to need major work regardless as it is a swap to begin with. Very little is original on that car.
Jupiter is a Dennis RS 130 fire truck, that's just how they look over here.
We just need some new pipes to be made and she should be sorted, she's amazing fun to drive.
Thanks!
you deserve more subs though :/
Thanks! Tell your friends and spread the word!
@@lmm will do
Thanks! The bigger we get the more exciting stuff we can do for you guys!
How much alcohol was consumed by others regarding the Lexus in a Lotus idea? If that works I can imagine that a pre-requisite to driving it will be the wearing of brown underpants!! 😂
If it works it'll be mental.
No alcohol, just a Chinese. So food coma inspired idea.
@@lmm I don't drink either but I do get food coma's and have some right weird dreams then so that makes sense haha! I'm sure between you all you can make the idea come together, as to whether it would work the way you intend is another thing entirely!!
Nothing ever goes the way we intend 😂
- while I wanna own a fire engine it’s things like these that out me off
It's just part of owning an old vehicle - a more modern fire engine is less likely to have issues - they're amazingly well looked after.
Jupiter has just been neglected before I aquired her.
Certainly don't let my misadventures put you off - she's still one of the best things I've ever aquired, and I've no regrets in doing so!
Hello
Hi there
I think you have a bad appliance, I'd sell it and get a different one
What sell Jupes? Never gonna happen. She's a right beauty really!
2 Cokes before you drove? I hope they were Diet otherwise you’re endangering other road users you madman!
Definitely a madman, can't you tell 😂
Hi, my name is Dave, I live in Luton, Bedfordshire. Someone has to I suppose. I own a Plaxton body Bedford YLQ, 1978, colour Blue/white. She is operational, insured, free tax and MOT'd. I like your videos of your projects, especially of your Dennis fire engine. I had to replace a couple of steel brake pipes. I took them off carefully and they were used as patterns for new ones to be made. These were fitted and no more problems were encounted. I see that you go to the Mid Suffolk Light railway, driving diesel locomotives including your own one. I would like to bring my coach down to your railway if you have any transport shows on. The railway is not too far to get to and she will have a good run. Also , I own a Dodge Q fire engine, 1939/1943. At the moment, I do not have the log book for her so I do not know her true age. The reg. no. is GXM 627. She worked during the war in the Isle Of Wight. I bought her about 4-5 years ago from Weedon Barracks near Northampton. No work has been done to her as yet except taking the body off from around the water tank. This literally just fell off when the cargo net was removed, I have kept what I could salvage for patterns when I start rebuilding her, which should be within a couple of months time when there is room where the coach is based. Please keep up the good work that you are doing and do not worry as you are not alone with your problems, we are all madmen, who else spends money on old vehicles when we could just spend it on other things like holidays or the like. Hope to meet up with you in the near future, keep your chin up and you will succeed eventually. A great channel and one not to miss. Dave.
Thank you very much Dave, good luck with the Dodge, though I'm somewhat pleased to hear that I'm not the only one who's got a rotten one!
The MSLR website would probably be the best place to offer to bring the coach over for a visit. There should be the contact details there!
Why don't you go an ask too your local fire Brigade and ask them who does the repair work on their fire trucks then go talk to one of the mechanics at the shop that they take their trucks to and see if you can find parts that you need
I spoke to Suffolk, they didn't run RS's apparently.
I want to try and do some bits with Norfolk!
