He had such a way to tell a story with his voice. Anybody else could stand up there and sing that song, and it wouldn’t even come close.

Goodness. I think you know by now that I'm an admirer and I'm so happy you listened to this powerful song. It is a timeless piece and could easily be done today. Elvis knew the songs that mattered and this one clearly shows this. Thank you so much for taking the time to find it. I'm forever grateful for all you do.

Thanks John. Great Reaction to an Awesome Song. Yes Mac Davis Wrote it. Elvis Brought it to life. Some People Didn’t want him To Record it. I’m Glad He Did. Thanks again. Keep um Coming. The Jumpsuit he’s Wearing is The Ladder Suit. Designed by Bill Belew.

Apparently this song was offered to Sammy Davis Jr but he said that he couldn't relate to it and he then suggested that they offered it to Elvis because he could relate to it.

A message some didn't like. Elvis held and would not pull the song.
Message combined with that incredible voice. He made his own,
Didn't bend to PC group. Like Bridge Over Troubled Water this is his. Waste for anyone to record today. Magic may have been the feeling, he sang with. I don't know, I just know it could bring tears to eyes.

Great delivery of this message song ... the master version has the edge ... but it is still great ... Mac was inspired by his black friend who was from the ghetto ... he wrote memories that elvis sang in the 68 comeback too ... there is an interview on you tube where he goes to the movies with elvis in the late seventies ... great story check it out ... thanks johnx

Bill Medley of the Rightous Brothers in an interview said Mac Davis... who wrote "In The Ghetto" offered it to the Rightous Brothers first. Bill told Mac to send it to Elvis... he was going to record a couple of Albums in Nashville... Mac sent it to Elvis.... and the rest is history. Bill said that The Rightous Brothers thought they'd already done enough social protest type songs and were looking for something else... Bill and Elvis were good friends. Go to youtube and put in "Bill Medley remembers Elvis"... it's about 10 minutes long.... 😀 also youtube
Bill Medley "songs he did and did not do". A clip from the same Interview.

Also....I have read comments where people prefer the studio version a little more though both are great. I feel the same except I like the live version slightly more. I usually do like Elvis' live versions a little better which is rare for me because the other music legend(s) I am a huge fan of, Led Zeppelin, I almost always prefer the studio versions.

Of course I love watching Elvis singing this song live, however as many other people have already said the studio version is really the one to go to if you want to get the total experience and emotion of this amazing song. It's always been a mystery to me how this song was not number one in the USA or the UK and for many weeks come to that!! Anyway once again thanks JG you are doing our man proud.

My second favorite Elvis song, it has such meaning and is still so relivent and unfortunately the answer to his questions... do we simply turn our heads and look the other way.. is way to often yes ~ yes we do ! It's so sad that in the greatest, richest country in the world we still don't take care of those in need. I like the live version best because you can see the emotion in Elvis's face when he sing it. +Rebecca Robbins That's awesome! Johnny Cash's hit "Ring Of Fire" got me in to Elvis. I was listening to it on the radio and after that I was searching for it on UA-cam. They recommended me "That's Alright" by Elvis. That's how I became a fan 😊
