    One of the questions we get asked the most at Electrifying.com is what seven seat electric cars do you recommend? Until now we’ve only been able to suggest the van-like Citroen e-Berlingo, the lacklustre and surprisingly small Mercedes EQB or theTesla Model X, which tops £100,000 and is impossible to get hold of.
    So while the EV9 may be the most expensive car Kia has built, there’s a great opportunity here for the Korean brand if they get the EV9 right - and from our first look at a pre-production car it seems like they are.
    Kia has transformed itself over the past decade from a budget brand to a one able to take on the premium players and the EV9 stands out against the large premium cars from the likes of BMW and Audi, thanks to its fresh modern look and a high quality interior.
    Joint Ginny as she takes an in-depth look at the final production version of the new Kia EV9 and don’t forget to read our review of the car over at Electrifying.com.
    Will the new Kia EV9 be on your wish list? Do you think Kia is heading in the right direction with the EV9? Would you choose one over a Tesla Model X or Mercedes EQB? As always, we love to hear what you think so get get typing in the comments below.

And I believe that tesla is classified as a rather premium brand at least in the States and its true when you look at the brand's average MSRP. Kia and Hyundai are offering appealing EVs as mass brands. Tesla focuses on high-tech FSD and range efficiency and all of their cars have some sporty kicks. I don't mind on-demand features IF you pay once to keep them. I don't want to have to pay year over year for heated seats or an around-view camera system. It actually makes sense in the focus of mass manufacturing to have everything installed, but only enabling what you want. This means when you purchase a car off the lot that doesn't have heated seats built into the car (what happens today), you don't have a car that is sitting on the lot because of that. Instead, ALL cars have heated seats, and when (if) you want them, pay a single price to enable them. But screw everything about yearly subscriptions. Make it a buy once and get it forever and I'm fine with it.

    Cool to pay for what I want? How does that work exactly, who pays for the heated seats you never enable? They had to be manufactured and fitted, that costs money. Let's say 30% of people will ever enable a feature like that. That means you'd have to either pay at least for your heater and the two their owners didn't enable, so 3x for it as you'd normally pay, or everyone has to pay up front for the heaters that they got installed but not enabled. And I doubt they'll want to make those "extra" features very expensive, so they'll just make everyone pay for them but not have them. Great deal for manufacturers.
    But let them try. It's my car, I'll get someone to hack it and enable everything.

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube Рік тому

      Economies of scale. The extra cost of installing is negligible by removing the processes around individual build.
      That said, I read an article which positioned this method in another way. While you may choose to never enable say heated seats, the appeal may be there for a subsequent purchaser of the car. That makes it much simpler for a second user as they no longer have to hunt for a second hand model with the features they're looking for, they can buy from a wide choice and then enable features to suit.

    • @jestempies
      @jestempies Рік тому

      @@djtaylorutube Economies of scale don't make things free. If they did, they could just enable those features on all cars, no? So obviously if you want that feature you're going to either have that hardware included in the price of a car that doesn't have it enabled, or you'll have to pay for your hardware and the hardware of all the people who don't enable it. Someone has to pay for it, and it's not going to be the manufacturer.
      And I would never buy a car because I can pay extra to have a feature enabled. I would just buy a car that has the feature, from a different manufacturer.

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube Рік тому

      @@jestempies I am yes because there's process and handling around every single operation and deviation requires more process than just doing the same thing over and over especially where the part cost is minimal.
      You should try watching some of Sandy Munroe's videos on manufacturing elegance.
      Some companies are already doing just this (BMW, Tesla for example) and it has been common in electronics and software for a long time where a feature unlock is performed via subscription.
      It's all down to analysis of course. I worked for a company that had a manufacturing analysis which concluded that removing two screw's from a computer case would save money as that part of the lid already had a clip. However, the cost of the analysis itself also needed to be factored but the overall supply chain and handling of those screws was a factor.

    Features on demand - another nope from me. Manufacturers need to understand that things as a service (Spotify, netflix etc) exist because those things get updated regularly and frequently, which makes a subscription competitive with continuously buying new. Cost of ownership for some people is leasing or PCR from new, so subscription might work for them if the cost is equal, but it'll tank in the used market. This in turn drives down residual value, which drives up leasing cost, which affects new sales....

    Just one small point for you. Tesla doesn’t offer level 3 driving. They offer level 2. In Europe I think I’m right in saying that only Mercedes currently offer level 3 driving, and only in Germany, and only on divided highways in traffic at less than 40mph. Level 3 just isn’t out there yet so if Kia have cracked and received regulatory approval in Europe then that’s a big deal.
    And subscriptions are awful. It’s fair enough to be charged extra for the features you want to enable. It goes against the way it’s been done for decades but I can see reasons why (although I’m some cases it will add weight for something you can’t use). But once bought, they should be part of the vehicle and passed on. This “next owner pays again” idea is just a rip off, and also will destroy second hand value (not the manufacturers care about that, but owners should).
    Great video. Love the car. Looks absolutely huge though for British roads, garages and car park spaces! Those nice wide back doors could cause some damage to cars in adjacent spaces!

    Not having the suicide doors is a real disappointment and other than the reversible seats it’s pretty bland. 8 years after the Model X with its amazing rear doors and we get this…
    In terms of paying for features later I’m ok with it. After all we often have different ‘packs’ we can specify from new. Overall it is probably cheaper to put all the features in every car and have some people not want / not pay for them than have a more complicated production line. BUT…must be purchasable with no long term subscription requirement, transferable and if there are features that a person might use rarely, then available for short term subscription (say 1 month). I wouldn’t buy a car with long term subscription on top of the purchase cost.

    Features by subscription is possibly better than people think. It should actually reduce cost as it simplifies production: fitting everything as standard means just one production line with no chance of mistakes along the way. Then, as long as you can choose between buying the options at a fixed cost initially, much as you'd do now with trim levels, or just paying for them when you need them, it should offer flexibility in purchase price. Go cheap and only pay for heated seats and steering wheel in the winter, but then lose a little on resale value further down the line, or pay upfront and have a better car to sell later on.

    The problem is that options used to be a cost in manufacture and added during the process by specific vehicle - now with changes in manufacturing process it’s simpler to have everything installed, of course software but also hardware - but then how do you charge for it. Up selling spec is a profit area that has to be used or you have to lift the whole price of all cars and people pay for stuff they don’t want. If you don’t like hot bot why pay for it? Also be aware that margins in the auto industry are slim - last time I checked BMW were operating at about 7.5% trading margin - start giving away the options and that soon disappears as they have always been a major profit driver.

Have to say the #EV9 is a bit of a let down versus it’s fantastic concept they should’ve kept the doors and dash for the wow factor . This new idea of charging monthly for features is concerning and it’ll affect the used market if they’re going to try and recharge people for them it’s a concern it’s a big concern to the purchase market but it might work if lease companies move into the used market I think cat ownership will be rare in the future particularly with expensive EVs - what we need is more cheaper chinese cars to shake up the market - the BYD Atto 3 is overpriced to make market share can’t see people choosing it over say a Cupra Born ( my comment ended up on the byd atto ! The on-demand services only make sense if we consider a vehicle on a lease/rent basis. That may suit the first owner - but car brands would need to find a way to provide a good leasing deal for used cars and essentially not really market cars for sale. They then turn in to mobility service providers. Thats a massive change in the car market - which might have to happen as the dealership network model is based on maintenance revenue which doesn't work so well with electric vehicles which have fewer moving parts. I just wonder what happens to the used cars once they've been through a couple or three leases (most likely with some level of re-manufacture to sort out damage between leases). Are we going to see the end of the cheap used car, with the manufacturer recycling them after say 6 years because they want to keep us all in new lease vehicles???
