Radio? Who Needs a RADIO!? (Land Rover LR3)

- Owner drove his 2006 Land Rover LR3 from 5 hours away to get his radio and navigation system diagnosed. One day it decided to not turn on and has been dead ever since.
The Land Rover has almost 250k miles on the clock and has a lot of electrical faults, but driving without music is no fun!
He already tried a used unit from eBay, but that did not turn on either.
Can we fix this Audio/Navigation system no parts required?

Truly, it is not just diagnosing, but having full confidence that you have diagnosed them well, my admiration for your good fundamentals, you do not let yourself be intimidated by anything, and that makes you great in this industry.
Some cases you can't be 100%...but 95% is still pretty good 👍
So cool that the owner recorded the repair!
Who needs a radio? Reminds me of a car dealer a few years ago selling a used BMW. The radio didn’t work, his response was “radio, who needs a radio?” 🙃
I've been watching Ivan's videos forever and I still get impressed with his work.
Love it when the customer follows up with good news!!! Another winner, Ivan. Best wishes from Florida.
The more off your videos I watch the more I understand electronic diagnosis and the process of where to start and move forwards u really explain it as simple as possible
It's great the owner does his own work and can swap that out. Lots of people can't do it!
Ivan , great diagnostic video, thanks for sharing, when people are willing to travel for hours to get a problem diagnosed and fixed, it proves you are one of the best.
Glad to see you went back and clarified the bus situation. Thanks Ivan!
Someone would have corrected him ;)
Great to see the customer record the follow up. Great work as always.
Why do they make everything so complicated these days, there is no need for it, what was wrong with the Ign' switch turning the radio on? Crazy! Without your scanners etc it would just be impossible to diagnose! Well done Ivan.
95% sure will do me!
Yes you're the man. I was going to start guessing ( after your work ) that something got wet and grew some green crusties on that passenger side and that was the problem.
IVAN is a TRUE master troubleshooter
I own an LR3, and have replaced the radios in many LR products. It's often easier to just replace the Nav/radio/amp with aftermarket, as I do that for a living. A couple optical bypass loops, and careful wiring, and you have a great sounding audio system.
Some problems whit the engine till now? Meaning snap crankshaft... This issue whit the crankshaft is very popular on 2.7 engines in Europe.
Do you know much about the LR4 with the denso nav/head unit? (not bosch) I could really use some help. Thanks.
_*IVAN, YOU'RE THE MAN *_ Was there ever a doubt !
The customer endorsement at the end was priceless.
When I was a kid, you could go to Kmart and get a nice radio for 39.95. Now it costs thousands to get a radio fixed......real progress.
Audiovox or a Kraco, and for $5 more you got the 3 band equalizer!
I'm having the same problem with my LR3. Same year. I so wish I was close to that area... but I live in Austin, TX. So, let me find a reliable shop that can do this job for me. AWESOME VIDEO.... very educational for me. VERY IMPRESSED with your knowledge and persistency. 5 STARS SERVICE!
these computer + electronics troubleshooting are clearly 21st century technology. Axles and calipers, oil pans and valve covers are solid mechanic's work but the future surrounds the often mysterious car computers and their networks. Maybe, in 20 years, these computers will better identify their associated failures but until then: powers, grounds, and communication signals are key. We just can't get enough of these type videos. Thx Ivan!
You're a wonderful dude Ivan thank you for being such a good honest hard-working person I will always send my vehicle to you if I can't figure out the problem myself and I will send everybody I know to you
Hey John thank you for the kind words! Really curious to see if the new ECM cures the ghost in your truck, 🤔
HI SIR IVAN;
YOU ARE THE MOST GENIOUS OF VERIFICATION IN MAKING 1000 PERCENT IN THE ABOVE STUDY CASE IN PINPOINTING THE RADIO IS JUNK WITH NO DOUBT IN YOUR MIND SUPPORTING
THE FACTS WITH THE TECHINCAL ANALYZIES EVER. I AM 75 AND HAVE NOT SEEN SUCH A PROFESSIONALIZM, YOU ARE BLESSED WITH AN ADDITIONAL SENSE. THANK FROM THE BOTTOM
OF MY HEART.
Great Diagnostic. Good tools and great logical thinking save the day.
It will be interesting to know what’s going on inside the radio unit itself. Is it a transistor failure, bad capacitor or Integrated circuit? Sometimes Ivan opens such things for thorough investigation and micro repairs. Two units in a row, there’s something not right with them...
But anyway, really satisfying diagnosis and outcome. Well done Ivan, you are the Man :)
Excellent job as usual Ivan. I'm a little bit surprised/disappointed you didn't dive into the radio and replace a burned MOSFET however.
Great one nailed it the customer was well practiced on the R&R lol
Best customer follow-up ever seen on PHAD. Great work as always Ivan..I agree, "you da man"!
Yet another vehicular issue has been put down by our Hero! Customers' LR3 lives to drive another day!! 👏👏👏
Always enjoy your videos . Just listened to your interview with Sean Tipping on his podcast . Really enjoyed it . I have forty years in this business and still enjoy all of the continuing education. My wife doesn’t understand why I work all day and study every night. My retirement plan is to work my way out of the dealers by going mobile. Keep up the good work .
Now this would’ve been where the you scope would’ve been handy ! lol great video and I really enjoyed your interview with Sean Tipping on the automotive diagnostic podcast ! Tell Eric O we’d love to hear him interviewed by Sean as well !
Another thorough and precise diagnosis Ivan! Thanks for taking us along.. Cheers!
Another great video Ivan. Nice to see how happy he was.
I've also had problems with those backprobes off of Amazon.
Eric O (SMA) swapped out a Human Machine Interface module yesterday. He had to make an educated guess. GM says, you take the plastic bag off of the REFURBed unit, you own it. The radio was all static and nothing on the screen worked. The diagnostics really didn't make sense, but everything pointed to it. He said during the video that 'part' and labor would be about $1,000. And if the part wasn't the problem, he'd have to eat it.
I watched that too. I know he took the leap of faith in his diagnosis, but I’ll bet he was more sure than he let on. The Producer said, up the drama and tension… Best Regards
@@marksd5650 I hadn't thought of that. Still, GMs policy of you open it you bought it is really a butt pucker. Basically GM is saying, you may not be able to prove it's this before hand. If your wrong because we didn't make it easy to test, you eat it.
Been driving Discovery 2 ever since I got it. Drives like a truck. But. I like it. I've gotten the 3 amigos a few in a row. It will clear and stay clear. Then pop up. It's one of my projects to do a IVAN DIAGNOSIS. Park it in my drive way. Do it the proper way. Scan for codes. Powers and grounds. Go to the module and start checking.
Instead of jumpering wires and short cutting to clear codes.
I'm going to suspect 2 items.
1. The module lives on the right side under the dash. Right where the sunroof drains. At one point my sunroof was leaking. I have taken it apart and repaired the broken drain line and hose.
2. I'm suspecting my brake calipers are hanging up. I'm experiencing good excellent brakes a few days in a row. Next. Brakes are getting hard.
Being that the case. I'm ordering brake caliper piston rebuild kits.
I'm a DYI ole guy. I'm willing to learn how to do this. If I find calipers beyond rebuild. Then I will buy new or rebuilt calipers.
Wish me luck Ivan.
Likely to be the ABS shuttle switch, it bolts to the ABS modulator, can be changed without bleeding brakes, wabco part £60, very common cause of three amigos, run a scan on it........
Two things impressed me, 1 249k miles and 2 the radio head unit is still available, I'm sure he paid good money for it but just being able to get one, wow
I paid $139 on eBay :). I returned the other bad one.
@@mattpizzimenti464 Have you tried to find repairmen in NY?
$50 bucks on ebay. :) i could have bought 16 used radios and still would be cheaper than a new one from Rover.
I hate it when you have to fix the fixer, lol. I enjoy your content very much.
This is so cool. From the start to finish diagnostic. But the icing was the customers comment at the end. A great video Ivan and nice diagnosis.
One of our company drivers came into our shop
and reported that on his last run to Salt Lake City,
his simi's radio was making funny noises as he
drove through Idaho.. I gave him a long hard stare
and said - 'Well, dont go through Idaho'
!
Ivan, the master at diagnostics. Guaranteed
Great video and diag as always. So happy too that customer was able to get a radio that works. Very disappointing that his first ebay radio was dead. Hope he got a refund from the seller.
Eric O just posted a video about a similar issue on a Buick. a new "HIM" (actually a refurbished unit) and a $1000.00 later the car was fixed, but even the Factory scan wasn't telling him much and GM told him that if he opened the replacement part then he owned it.
ua-cam.com/video/5T3hQTGxfK0/v-deo.html
Tail light replacement at SMA.
I am so impressed of your way of diagnosing!
Yup...the man! That's why I watch you Ivan!
I just can't wrap my head around seeing a semi-modern LR with 250,000 miles on it,
He who believes in foolish myths is often astounded when the truth reveals itself.
It’s a petrol one
I would think Hoovie and Samcrack would agree with you
Wow, kia relay on land rover?? Those vehicles are pretty bad for failing modules especially in the UK. (England) used to own one. Good motor though. You're the man! Great diagnosis!! Learned something on here! Great video! 👍
Every town in America need an "Ivans Automotive".
Who needs a radio when got varieties of noises from top notch reliable!
Would've really loved to see you open the radio up and see if there was something obvious wrong with it. Internal fuse blown, missing standby voltage, blown transistors are all potentially easy fixes.
Great diagnosis. I can't get my head around the point of needing so much software just to turn on the radio, seems like use of technology just for the sake of it.
@@crisprtalk6963 I think the latter are indeed making the profit!
You can’t blow a horn without it first going through a body control module.
True glad old car's don't have all that crap in them at least my Toyota 05 doesn't
Our manager have meetings for the sake of meeting.
@@neilmurphy845 Not far off.
Nothing like a good old British Land Rover Ivan...from Fred in England...
My first rover had two wires to the rear end stoplight and tail light, I like it like that!
Impressive again mr Ivan.
Quality as always, my friend.....Pete
Ivan. Finally a Land Rover. But waiting for you to sort out a D2.. lol
Ivan has got to be the man. Anybody else who sees a Land Rover starts playing that Pink Floyd song from the Wall Album. RUN LIKE HELL. "If we catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks we're going to send you back to mother in a cardboard box". You better run.
Hello Ivan, and truly, like the comment below. When you can do a job, this is how it looks like. Top Tear Professional. Yes, I like it. One person that CAN fix cars. Well I have not seen Keith's work. He might be #2.
Wowsers! A quarter of a million miles on one of those things has to be some sort of record. The electrical systems on those things were shonky when the cars were new, I'm surprised anything worked at all this far down the line.
Not even close. Go to the auction sites. It’s very very common.
what a cool customer of ivan's
Great video thank you for sharing !!! If you can do it I can do it SOMETIMES lol just need you to point me in the right direction so I don't go down the wrong rabbit hole !! Thanks again Ivan
IVAN is the MAN!
Ivan, you're the man👍
Nice diagnosis! Question: Is it a bad sign when you have had to disassemble your vehicle so much you can now do it one-handed?
That's the Land Rover way now! Yeah, they are pretty luxurious when they're new. But they are a service nightmare. A "passion" project. Being an unreliable money pit, well that's the name of the game.
He really did take it out with one hand.
Disassembled console on 92PREVIA
Tried 2 instrument clusters
Put back in OG...barely made it out of there with all the brittle stuff...but it definitely got one handed...
Hard way to diag!
250,000 miles. :) I’ve come to know her well
Owner is a masochist, obviously.
That list of parts fired at the car for a bad fuse...
Pretty scary when a blown radio is as serious as a blown head gasket!
Great jon on fhe Diagnosis on the Land Rover..Great Video...
Keep up the good work you're the man!
Great Diagnosis
You are the man!!!
C'mon Ivan! You can fix the radio with baling wire! Don't let us down!
Great diag Ivan, As always 👍
Check for water on the floor under the seat getting into a module. Samcrac recently fixed a car that was pronounced totaled because of that issue with the seat controller.
Probably because with water damaged cars there is no way of knowing when the next component will fry.
So you might get it running after the first fix, but then 6 months later there will be another failure, then another, then another.
Insurance just writes it off to prevent future claims.
So, the ignition on wakes up the instrument cluster, which is the gateway, the instrument cluster sends a wakeup call to the audio head unit
on the medium speed can bus pins 3 and 11which in turn wakes up the navigation, since the head unit did not wake up it set no communication codes with other modules including the bcm , did I understand this correctly?
“So this thing is FULL of trouble codes, obviously, you know that’s to be expected…” = Ivan subtly throwing shade on Land Rover reliability scores…
I knew you reliability retards would come out of the woodwork since a LR appeared. Where are you whenever he has a Toyota or Honda with an issue??
@@vw5056 they sell a hundred thousand Hondas or Toyotas for-every pile of shit Land Rover.
@@The_Sword3 Well yeah, no shit Sherlock. Just like Casio sells many more units than Rolex.
Don't understand why he didn't just go with aftermarket but another good diagnosis good work
Originality
Smashing diag ivan 😀
Looks like the new radio worked perfect 😀
The question is why did it fail, maybe the firmware became corrupted.
LR is a company that used Lucas electronics for years, they are still known as "The Prince of Darkness" even though the company was closed down in 96, the curse lives on....
@@Blazer02LS I did notice the Lucas name appearing on new parts but as you said the curse likes the name 😀
I just thought someone bought the name, like some pillock buying the good name of Grundig and slapping it on a crappy washing machine, Shame as grundig made good quality electronics.
@@zx8401ztv Yeah think it was TRW who bought it, then they sold it to another outfit. Not sure who owns it now...
The customer said it perfect at the end. Looks like he got that dash figured out too.
I was thinking there's no way land rover would make it that far without converting to coils
When I was in the market for a Range Rover one I looked at had a spring steel conversion. I passed as I like originality and air springs are not even that expensive.
That's why the relays are no in the picture,
They are hiding hahaha 😆😂🤣
AWESOME WORK!!! 👍🏽👊🏽💪🏽
Hi Ivan
I don’t know if your trying to advertise your business , but your info is showing at 20:20
Thank you
Ivan your the man I second that good work
He must really Love that car. I think most people would have just forget about it or get some aftermarket that would work.
Aftermarket never looks original because it isn't.
@@vw5056 I agree but, If the car is a "Collector Car" by all means try to keep it as original as possible. On the other hand, if the car is a Daily Driver beater car, it doesn't make sense to spend crazy money on Diagnostic Troubleshooting and trying to get a used radio that might work. I understand sentimental feelings dictate how much a customer is willing to spend.
You were right the first time Ivan....It's a Discovery 3rd generation.
Own a Rover = Ivan on retainer.
Those head units may have internally fuses that are blown.
So the bad relay was the problem with the nav system and the head unit was bad.
That'll teach him to close the window when leaving the car.
I wish there was a teardown section to this video because I think HU can be fixed by replacing CAN transceiver IC
Not in this case
I had the exact problem on my 2006 lr3 and same codes popping up on my and it was the radio. When I opened the radio it was burn from the inside. Replaced the radio from eBay and it work just fine
Do you know who manufacturers these oem radio units?
Can you please so a video on different scanners and what ones you like and if you want any new ones? Looking into getting one myself but not sure what one
I have worked on an LR3 in the past, had a dead radio in it as well. Found a burned up SMD resistor in the radio that Rover was using as a fuse. Replaced SMD resistor with small piece of wire, and it all came back to life...
FWIW: We also found a BUNCH of corroded splices in the harness in the passenger side rocker area under the carpet. Rover diagrams suck until you figure out how to read them, then they're OK - actual Rover diagrams give distance into the harness to a splice or connector so you have a good idea of where to start cutting the tape off the harness to go exploring.
Good find. I would replace the fusible resistor with something similar for safety.
@@dosgos Remember, this is only temporary - Unless it works (Red Green)
@@icesoft1 Nothing as permanent as a temporary solution
This is pretty funny, I was just looking at an LR3 yesterday with the same issue..... It had way too many issues which made it BER
The only thing that puzzled me was your not fixing the radio. Afterall NPR is the goal! :-)
Nice diagnosis. Hey do you know a good CNC machine shop in the tristate area?
Another great diagnosis, everyone bags out Scotty Kilmer but the more I see the more his advice on money pit shitboxes comes true. I wouldn't take a land rover range rover product if it was given to me for free. Luckily the new radio unit was plug and play was expecting a complex procedure there but at least the customer could plug it in himself being 5 hours away. Makes you wonder how these overly complex electricals will eventually be undiagnosable a situation the manufacturers would love to keep the $$$ flowing.
Who cares? Keep your ignorance to yourself.
That state college way of saying audio made me chuckle. I am from NY. We sau awwwdio LOL
Where does one find a "brand new" OEM radio for a 16 year old Land Rover?
brilliant as always!
Mine comes on then everything shuts back off after 30sec can hear the relay click when it shuts off...not sure where to start .
My neighbor had one of these that developed electrical issues. He parked in his detached garage with the intention of working on it during the weekends. Flash forward years later and he finally decides to get it repaired and sold. Sadly he had a bad surprise waiting for him under the hood. Can you guess what he found?
Squirrel nest?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics A little smaller. Mice and lots of them. Under the hood, under the dash, in the glove box, in the interior, and if remember correctly in the spare tire. Wiring destroyed and interior destroyed. Mice droppings and urine everywhere. He ended up selling it to a scrap yard.
*owner start to ripping off the dash one handed*
me: wow that’s something 🤔👍
Ivan, are you ready for the upcoming calls by folks whose cars suddenly lose there connections through UConnect or other cell connected system that will stop when 3G is shut down? Really stinks that Chrysler/FCA/Stellantis and Toyota/Lexus plus Nissan/Infinity all ignored this until now! They have been installing the same 3G based systems right up until 2019 even when they were told the carriers were turning it off.
Hey! I'm from a distant country... It's very interesting to know about the 3G shutdown. Please show some detailed link where you can read about the shutdown. Thanks!
@@engeneer_ru5827 it’ll most likely be North America first….since we now have 5g and the radio frequencies are needed from 3g to convert to it. Besides we can keep 4g for a while as a fall back….if in your country there is not much 5g you will probably keep 3g a while longer.
@@jonnycando Thank you for the explanation! What percentage of the US is currently covered by 5G?
@@engeneer_ru5827 not sure maybe 50% or better
well done, and yes he is the man!
Hi Ivan
I’ve got a Range Rover sport 2006 & the sat nav & radio/CD/telephone keeps coming on & then shutting down with the radio screen display reading “ VEHICLE FAULT SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN” I have no other faults on the car & it drives fine but the infotainment & sat nav starts up & shuts down every 10 seconds approx constantly. Any thoughts on diagnosis, I’m in the UK so not really feasible to bring the car to you.
Many thanks if you have any ideas. Chris
Hello friends!
I have my 2007 4.2 sc with a defective screen so I just change the screen and it's electronic card but since I changed the screen with another amplifier the screen turn on but nothing happers on it...

So it looks like the HS Can works to the radio, but the IPC says it lost communication to the radio.
Hopefully you've got it Ivan.
