  • Today I interview Jimmy and Alia of JELA's Ark, a young family from Texas who moved to Puerto Rico to build their own off-grid homestead, organic farm, and future eco-tourism destination.
They share how they found their land, how they negotiated the real estate purchase from the owner without the help of an agent, and why they chose Puerto Rico as their place to begin their self-sustainable lifestyle project.
They also talk about some of the challenges they've faced relocating their family, building their own home in Puerto Rico, securing power and water-all while learning to grow their own food on a steep, ocean view mountainside as newbie farmers in a tropical climate.
They'll discuss the importance of good neighbors, family, faith, and the willingness to trust and learn as you go.
This is a fabulous opportunity to learn more about starting up a tropical, Puerto Rico off-grid farm/homestead from regular people going for it all on their own.

It shows that Puerto Rico is all about family. Without the family connections, they wouldn't have found the land, builder, apartment, etc. What a great way to get the family closer together. With that positive thinking and faith in God, there is no question they will succeed in fulfilling their dream.

I did the move from Las Vegas,Nv to Guaynabo,PR 10 years ago with 3 Kids ages 12,10 and 7. First thing we did was found a home church who help us a lot to settled. Now my kids are completely bilingual and like he says in the video they learned how to cope with situations like hurricane Maria for us was like camping. Hope this family can grow and be as blessed as we have been. Shalom.

Awesome interview! So nice to see new people setting out on the grand adventure that is Puerto Rico! He is right when he says you don't grow if you're too comfortable. Puerto Rico is not always comfortable, but it has been simply amazing living here in the countryside. We came with some of those expectations of 100% off-grid living, but have come to a balance where we appreciate the grid and the modern comforts, but know we can live without them if we need to (and will get that opportunity often here when the infrastructure drops for various reasons lol).

What a sweet and charming couple. It takes a lot of bravery and belief in yourself to do something like this. There will most definitely be challenges for them. The inefficiencies of the island in comparison to the U.S. are palpable. But I admire their willingness and commitment to wanting to change things up from their comfortable lifestyle so that they can grow and better appreciate the simpler things in life. Very few people would make that sacrifice. But it's clear from this interview that they are faith driven, so I'm sure they'll connect with others that share the same values and they will find a way to make it work for them. I wish them the very best.

The self sufficient comments about people on the mainland freaking out when power goes out, that is a city thing. Rural people don't freak out and are usually capable enough to make it work. I understand they came from cities so this is both a rural and a PR move, both are big changes and one our family is looking at doing as well.

I am an American married to a Puerto Rican woman I have been living here for 3 years and love it. My wife didn't want to come back here but I convinced her to come back and help her parents. The people are really nice until they get on the roads. They are some of the worst drivers I have ever seen. I was treated like family by the community right from the beginning.

Hayden Eskew from vegan vblog did the same few years ago. There' a trend doing the same as this couple did. Interesting!
