It is great to see young Puerto Ricans standing up and fighting for their land. But these things happens all over latin america, where corrupt politicians think they own the country and want to dispose of their resources as they wish. I agree w you Mayra but its something very difficult to do as I have also experienced. They call it progress in many cases here this case apparently an individual looking to make as much as he can for some land he has no use for or can't afford the expense of doing something w it.. PR has many abandoned complexes on prime land that they could very well clean up and rebuild rather than walking away from them. Puertoricans need to demand from our politicians to keep our land away from new development as land is limited and so much of whats in place can be remodeled, the channel LifeTransPlanet just showed a condo in which development was stopped because of the people speaking up ua-cam.com/video/ckr7W-cA6SI/v-deo.html however it was way too late as the construction is close to finalized. So again We must demand from our politicians to not Sell Out to industry as land is very limited presently,. In times of elections we must heavily question the candidates (all of them either for mayor, governor or any representative) how they intend to not sell out to industry and protect what we have left from industry.. We all must know who we vote for, so question them thoroughly and expect answers we can hold them too.

And this is exactly why I’m against Puerto Ricans on the mainland advocating for any kind of U.S. legislation on the island. Particularly statehood. I say this because their advocacy carries severe consequences that are very similar to what the Houle has brought to the native Hawaiians.
As far as I’m concerned, sovereignty is the only solution that will not only guarantee the preservation of the islanders culture…but will also provide them with the option to govern their lives as they see fit. I’m Puerto Rican/descendent of Spain by heritage. But even I have enough sense to admit that I’m way too Americanized to get involved in Puerto Rico’s politics as it’s never been our call to make.

The composition of the USA as well as Puerto Rico's is that of immigrants from different nations. For that matter, even though our first founding fathers are spanish, we are as much americans as any american on the USA mainland. For that matter, it is time that Puerto Rican's make up their minds and be seriouly persistant. That is, if they really want to become a state of the USA. Unfortunately, some just want the aids and don't value their US citizenship. What a shame!! We are as much entitled to every given right, because we have a part of the USA experience in many ways even if born in Puerto Rico. One of these is having participated in most every conflict and war the USA has been involved in. There were even puertorrican soldiers in the USA Civil War. My granffather was a WWI army soldier. With that being said, this status matter most certainly needs definition. Puerto Ricans are no less qualified than the people of this United States of America. By the way our ethnicity also includes blacks from Africa, comming to Puerto Rico as slaves and Native Taino. So. Yes, we are Americans.😄🥰🌹

@@carmenmolina696 Amen to that sister.' I believe both can be accomplished. PR can be a state and still preserve reserved lands. It's a no brainer, the island is very small. Other island nations have already started this process and have gone even further to prevent further increases in non-native population. PR needs to start thinking in the same manner soon for the good of it's people and local resources.

@@atilathesonofdanubius4277 of course it can become a state and preserve its culture heritage. An example of such would be the state of Louisiana. They have preserved their frensh culture and language within the US mainland for over a hundred years. Their public school system teaches in both english and frensh. So, there you go as to the fear of loosing the spanish language. That is not true. The same could be said about the native americans and hawaiians and other nationalities that have lived for more than a hundred years within the USA creating their own little towns like : El Barrio, Little Italy, China Town, German Town, Seminole Territory, etc... As to what you say about the preservation of the land and prevention of people from other countries taking over Puerto Rico; that is not going to be easy, because a lot of the economy will depend on this influx of people from other countries for its development. They have the money, fresh ideas that spin out jobs within the island. So, there you go.

@@younglord00 so you think that it would be in Puerto Rico's best interest to be self governed or independent? I don't think that would work or that it would be a good idea, because in all this time , what Puerto Rico has accomplished has been because of USA intervention and help since 1898. Proof that I'm right is if you look around those islands like Cuba, Haiti etc... They live in total stricken poverty and misery. People are subject to having to accept what little is given to them along with their rights being violated (communism). I know this for a fact, because I have students at the school I work at, that came from there, talk about it. You should hear what the ones that have come from Venezuela have to say. I have co workers that abandoned everything in Cuba, because they saw no future for their families. So, I am not saying that this here is total perfection, because it's not. Then again, you have better oportunities and have the freedom to be , expression and choice. So, no, independence would certainly not help Puerto Rico have a better economy. Only certain puertorican elite group would be in control of economy and anything else. Middle class would disappear and puertoricans would be trapped in not being able to leave the island whenever they chose to reach out for job opportunities and a better quality of life. It would unfortunately be total chaoes, dissaster. This is how I see it and how many other puertoricans see it. Then again, you and everyone else is entitled to their opinion. In one of their bays, in order for visitors to be able to swim in it, they must watch an informational video, before swimming in it. People have a strong sense of belonging and respect for their natural resources, everyone protects their land and areas. May God/dess bless you for all your incredible work! It is very moving and emotionally evocative. My wife grew up in Arecibo as a little girl, until her early teens, when she moved back to the States. Her family has been on the island for 100s of years, (her abuela was idigenous,) and so it is her, as well as our son's heritage, (he has video editing skills, by the way - I am but a mere writer.) Therefore to whatever small part of your efforts we could contribute, would be an honor. Many, many blessings in all your endeavors. cwy

I will be going to PR on Sunday. I’ll be there for 31 days. I’ve been watching how some people have been abandoning the island. So I thought I would take the opportunity and move back. So I bought a house in San Lorenzo. In the process of refurbishing it. I’ve been looking for groups to join that want to make an effort to improve the situations on the Island instead of running away from it.

Ms. Bianca, this is nothing new. As always, PR laws exists, but unfortunately not applied. I'm the grandaughter of a WWI soldier and I lived in Puerto Rico for many years and saw so much fraud and mishandling of things that it was unreal. Sadly, even though Puerto Rico has come a long way, I think it will always remain the same. There's a lot of politics and corruption involved, but some people there live like in a sort of daze, and have gotten to the point were they are used to this poor quality of living standards along with violaton of rights. It's a shame, because it is such a beautiful island. Right now I have land, a parcel inheretance of my father, that I don't know if someone has unlawfully taken it. I say this, because of the way things run there. I live and work in Florida state and cannot maintain this property. Tried to up date it and the person, relative, stole our money. It's really been a mess trying to keep this property. Anyway, I thought your documental was extremely informative. I hope that you'll accomplish your goals. 🥰🌷

Right next door in the US Virgin Islands there is zero protection for locals to access beaches they have been bathing in for generations. Some going as far back as before The US bought the islands. There is a law that states you cannot deny beach access, "the small print?" You must access it by boat, you cannot cross the land. I came home from Uni one year and my friends and I had to rent a boat to access the beach where we bathed naked as children and where most of us learned to properly camp, swim, fish etc.
Seven years before I was born the "Fountain Valley Massacre" occurred on St. Croix, eight people died, eight were injured. What I have rarely heard mentioned was that due to the murders, many locals were able to buy property that were previously out of their reach. This year will be the 50th anniversary of the murders. Hopelessness of the youth, fatigue of the status quo, that feeling of being a stranger in your own land, temperature is rising and those who should see and feel it are too busy lining their pockets with mainland interests' money.
Media portrayed the massacre at the resort as a robbery gone wrong; it wasn't. When you take the shepherds sheep and land, make him shepherd your sheep on what used to be his land to feed his family whilst feeding your family with the fat of the land while his own family starves; I'm curious as to what you logically thought the eventual outcome would be.
The "powers that be" have forgotten that mice, while small, have teeth and even a tiny lamb when backed into a corner will raise up and attempt to defend himself.
Kudos to my Puerto Rican neighbors for standing up for themselves. Your blogs are bittersweet. The things I have had to do eg. have a Caucasian friend pretend to be me to purchase property at home, to aggressively negotiate a lower, more reasonable price are ridiculous. We are so messed up in the head at home that a Caucasian has a better chance at there being some wiggle room in the price, even when the seller is a local.

This reminds me of a quote I once read from a major stockholder in a palm oil conglomerate. It went something to the tune of, “we knew we were destroying the planet. We went ahead and did it all the same. And now, decades later, we have made some of the biggest fortunes ever made. But we also created one of the biggest environmental catastrophes in the process.” Money without a plan to use it for something good is a sickness. It destroys the mind and the soul. And, as it turns out, it does a number on our planet too.
I’m genuinely interested in helping out with stuff like this. My vision has always been cast to the number one love in my life: Indonesia. But Puerto Rico is much closer to my current home.
I’m currently in a training program to become a merchant mariner. There’s a nice paycheck at the end of the rainbow, but also really nice chunks of time off. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to use it. One of my classmates tuned me into how the taxes work for property in PR. I’ll admit, it sounds very enticing. And everyone in this program stresses to buy land with the money we’re going to be making. So it has definitely piqued my interest. But I really don’t want to be part of a problem there that you actually brought to my attention. I feel like using money to protect something might be a whole lot more fulfilling than extracting every last dollar I could out of a plot of land.
I don’t think I could afford to do it on my own, but with a small group of generous folks, who knows. I’d be really interested to learn more about this sort of thing for when I might be able to make a positive impact.

Bianca, thank you and your team for keeping PR pristine & clean!
I’ve been to PR 5 times. The last time I went 3 times to the airport in a week and could not leave! It took 30 + mosquito bites in 2 days to force me out and Trump’s first travel ban caused a huge protest at LAX upon landing which caused a 3 hour delay to depart the airport.
Yada, ect, I’m sharing your video with my Nuyorican families across the country. You are excellent with explaining this issue credibly and why land use matters to all living creatures.
Importing 80% of it’s food must have a connection with old laws in congress imposed on the island.

Keep the land natural. Rich people feel like they are entitled to everything and some asshole in realestate or government will sell their soul for profit without any regard to the long term effect on the land and its people. The island is small so its important to preserve as much as we can for future generations to enjoy the place.
