Game Dude always fascinated me for how wacky and sometimes, try hard he comes across in his reviews. It's really funny looking at them just to see how much of a trainwreck they are lol
"Super Mario Kart is a classic masterpiece" I've seen enough of this game in action to know that is absolutely not the case. It was impressive for its time, sure, but every single subsequent game in the series outshines it in every way. It's like saying Super Mario Bros on the NES is the peak of the series; you're not just wearing rose-tinted glasses at that point, you're just putting on a blindfold.
And strangely enough people actually see Super Mario Bros on the NES as one of the best Super Mario games (better than Super Mario Bros 2 (USA), the Super Mario Land series, Super Mario Bros Deluxe, Super Mario Sunshine, the New Super Mario Bros series, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Run, Bowser's Fury and probably more and I gotta say this is ridiculous of the first game's flaws: 1. The controls are incredibly dated 2. The graphics look dull 3. The lack of music 4. Some of the levels are pretty bad 5. The game doesn't have a save system 6. All the 8 bosses are nearly identical But the game can still be enjoyable even though the majority of the Super Mario games are much better than this

He’s a guy who takes heavy inspiration from the Nerd and Nostalgia Critic, but he actually spends time talking about games he loves or is passionate about. He also never does anything overreacting and is quite authentic, being a guy you can just sit down and grab a coffee with to listen to

So obviously Game Dude's review is awful, and I want to defend it as little as possible despite actually agreeing that Double Dash and Wii are the two weakest games in the series. Not to say I dislike both of them (I only dislike Double Dash, Wii is still a fun time) or that Game Dude's overall reasoning for hating on them is good (again the review is awful), but there is ONE point he raises that I kind of agree with: The way you can't do a Rainbow Road jump. Not so much that specific example, but the design philosophy behind it. Mario Kart 64 and Super Circuit are my two favorite games in the series, and a big part of the reason why is because of how much freedom their physics give you. In 64, you can pull off some pretty crazy maneuvers like the aforementioned Rainbow Road skip, but Super Circuit takes it to the next level. If you have a boost going off of a ramp in that game, you can fly pretty much anywhere you want, it feels SO good. Look at any speedrun of SC Rainbow Road, it's wild! But the thing with Super Circuit is that all of this was intended, on Lakeside Park they even put one tiny jump panel out of bounds so that you could fly off into it and skip a big part of the track. Super Circuit was an amazing game because they expanded on the cool things you could do in 64 like the Rainbow Road skip and intended for you to do it in every instance, Mario Kart was going crazy places. And then one game later the design philosophy was the exact opposite. In Double Dash, your kart is weighed to the ground and your freedom of movement is heavily impacted by that. Going off a ramp in Double Dash actually makes you SLOWER than if you had just stayed on the ground, and any shortcuts you could potentially take are strictly developer intended and strictly "use a mushroom to make this very easy jump". This just strips away so much of the fun of the series and no other game in the series, before or after, has made the decision to have jumps be a detriment rather than a benefit, which is the biggest reason why this is the only game in the series I dislike. But while the weightiness went away with future entries, the choice to restrict the player's freedom was still there. DS actually did restore some of the freedom of movement that let you do some cool stuff, even if it still was more restrictive than 64 and Super Circuit, but pretty much everything after that has been more and more restrictive. So when I see a clip like that, of Wii's Rainbow Road, and I see that "Logically you should be able to jump there but Lakitu just decides you can't go off the track for any reason", I think it's pretty disappointing. While I do consider Mario Kart 8 to be a great game (it fixes a LOT of unrelated issues I had with prior games as well), it is the culmination of this "Play the game this specific way and don't ever try to break the rules" philosophy that's plagued Mario Kart since Double Dash. I was playing the Yoshi's Island track and there's a hang-glider section near the end. The goal is to the right of this section, just over a short barrier that your karts can't cross on the ground. So I figure "What if I try flying over that? That'd be a cool shortcut!" and I attempt it, which results in Lakitu picking me up and putting me back on the track the moment I start to go over the barrier. In Mario Kart 8, you are ALWAYS driving in a tunnel. Sure, the game creates the illusion that you're not driving in a tunnel by making the areas LOOK open, but the moment you start to go outside of this tunnel, Lakitu is there to say "Tut tut, you aren't playing the game the exact way we want you to, get back on the track you helpless child!" I highly doubt Game Dude put as much thought as this into his critique of these Mario Kart games, especially since he seems to dislike Super Circuit as well. But I do think it's a valid reason to dislike this aspect of the games, as Nintendo has more or less banished the concept of cool skips that come from the mastery of the game's physics.
Thank you for coming at this from a non lolcow angle. I hate that shit but love the idea of the Gamedude separately from that. That makes it really hard to find good videos about Gamedude. Good video.

It kills me how he thinks the expanded character roster in Double Dash is pointless when the game NEEDS 16 characters on the track at all times
why would you want less characters in a Mario kart game, especially if you are only left with the more boring standard ones.

So obviously Game Dude's review is awful, and I want to defend it as little as possible despite actually agreeing that Double Dash and Wii are the two weakest games in the series. Not to say I dislike both of them (I only dislike Double Dash, Wii is still a fun time) or that Game Dude's overall reasoning for hating on them is good (again the review is awful), but there is ONE point he raises that I kind of agree with: The way you can't do a Rainbow Road jump. Not so much that specific example, but the design philosophy behind it.
Mario Kart 64 and Super Circuit are my two favorite games in the series, and a big part of the reason why is because of how much freedom their physics give you. In 64, you can pull off some pretty crazy maneuvers like the aforementioned Rainbow Road skip, but Super Circuit takes it to the next level. If you have a boost going off of a ramp in that game, you can fly pretty much anywhere you want, it feels SO good. Look at any speedrun of SC Rainbow Road, it's wild!
But the thing with Super Circuit is that all of this was intended, on Lakeside Park they even put one tiny jump panel out of bounds so that you could fly off into it and skip a big part of the track. Super Circuit was an amazing game because they expanded on the cool things you could do in 64 like the Rainbow Road skip and intended for you to do it in every instance, Mario Kart was going crazy places.
And then one game later the design philosophy was the exact opposite. In Double Dash, your kart is weighed to the ground and your freedom of movement is heavily impacted by that. Going off a ramp in Double Dash actually makes you SLOWER than if you had just stayed on the ground, and any shortcuts you could potentially take are strictly developer intended and strictly "use a mushroom to make this very easy jump". This just strips away so much of the fun of the series and no other game in the series, before or after, has made the decision to have jumps be a detriment rather than a benefit, which is the biggest reason why this is the only game in the series I dislike.
But while the weightiness went away with future entries, the choice to restrict the player's freedom was still there. DS actually did restore some of the freedom of movement that let you do some cool stuff, even if it still was more restrictive than 64 and Super Circuit, but pretty much everything after that has been more and more restrictive. So when I see a clip like that, of Wii's Rainbow Road, and I see that "Logically you should be able to jump there but Lakitu just decides you can't go off the track for any reason", I think it's pretty disappointing.
While I do consider Mario Kart 8 to be a great game (it fixes a LOT of unrelated issues I had with prior games as well), it is the culmination of this "Play the game this specific way and don't ever try to break the rules" philosophy that's plagued Mario Kart since Double Dash. I was playing the Yoshi's Island track and there's a hang-glider section near the end. The goal is to the right of this section, just over a short barrier that your karts can't cross on the ground. So I figure "What if I try flying over that? That'd be a cool shortcut!" and I attempt it, which results in Lakitu picking me up and putting me back on the track the moment I start to go over the barrier. In Mario Kart 8, you are ALWAYS driving in a tunnel. Sure, the game creates the illusion that you're not driving in a tunnel by making the areas LOOK open, but the moment you start to go outside of this tunnel, Lakitu is there to say "Tut tut, you aren't playing the game the exact way we want you to, get back on the track you helpless child!"
I highly doubt Game Dude put as much thought as this into his critique of these Mario Kart games, especially since he seems to dislike Super Circuit as well. But I do think it's a valid reason to dislike this aspect of the games, as Nintendo has more or less banished the concept of cool skips that come from the mastery of the game's physics.
A very fair and thoughtful assessment! I guess it really just depends on what you personally value most in Mario Kart.
