'Volerci' is a synonym of 'bastare' e 'servire'. 'Volerci', 'bastare' and 'servire' ALWAYS require the auxiliary 'ESSERE' in ANY composed tenses.

What I don't understand is Volere is the verb 'to want'. Why is that used to say how long it takes?

You can think of Volere + Ci as literally meaning “it wants,” as in “how much time is wanted” to do something. Or just keep in mind that pronominal verbs, those that are commonly used with certain pronouns, take on slightly different meanings in certain contexts.

Exactly! When Ci is used with Volere to form the pronominal verb Volerci it takes on a new meaning. Otherwise without Ci, the verb Volere just means “to want.”
