    My father used an NAA .22LR to stop a home invasion. There were two attackers, one with a handgun, who fired several shots at my father. My father returned fire from cover with the NAA at about 10 feet. The round went through the attacker's shooting arm, hitting the artery, then grazed his sternum. Did it put him on the ground? No. But it caused him and his partner to decide they'd had enough, and to run out.
    He was arrested at the hospital, and his brother, who was his accomplice, was arrested two days later. They're both doing life in prison. As self-defense weapons go, it worked. My parents both survived, uninjured. After the trial, my father got the gun back, but he'd switched to the NAA .22 Win Mag to add a little power to his concealed carry.
    BTW: My mother sewed him a nice little pocket holster from an old soft eyeglass case.

      Good for him, but if i were him i would at least switch to 38 special. The only reason I can imagine for using something so weak as your primary self-defense is because of something like arthritis. There are 38 self defense loads paired with a front heavy enough revolver that should be tolerable and are more likely to more immediately stop a threat than his 22 did. The felt recoil of a good hefty 38 will likely be comparable if not better compared such a tiny and light 22 magum. There was an enormous amount of luck that played a part in things working out as well as they did for him And I would caution against expecting yourself to get that lucky twice in a row if he ever has to use it again.

      @@nobody2021
      This was over 30 years ago, and he passed on 16 years ago. He'd previously carried a .38, but didn't like the bulk.
      He'd often wear his bathrobe around the house, and could drop the NAA .22 in the pocket. We can talk about recoil and stopping power all day, but his top priority was convenience. A .38 doesn't sit well in a bathrobe pocket, but the NAA was on him, in the kitchen, as the attack unfolded.
      The best carry gun is the one you'll carry, and something is always better than nothing. Unless you're dealing with a committed attacker, shooting back is almost always enough to cause criminals to turn and run.
      As to luck, he was a good shot, and knew the layout of the house, while the shooter, who was wearing a gorilla mask (it was Halloween), was confused by the entryway, which was literally a hall of mirrors.

    Some folks in law enforcement may know the sad story of SC trooper Coates. The trooper exchanged gunfire with a perpetrator armed with a .22mag NAA mini revolver. The trooper was shot once in the armpit with a .22mag while unloading 5 rounds Center of mass from his service revolver into the obese perp. The trooper collapsed and died almost instantly since the bullet hit his heart while the fat SOB with 5 rounds of .357 in him pace around the patrol car for several minutes until he collapsed..yet lived and he is serving life in prison. Moral of the story and the reason why most police force would show the heart wrenching dash cam video to rookies..Never Under Estimated A Guns ability to kill you.

    • @jakeoutdoors9600
      @jakeoutdoors9600 7 років тому +12

      I read that report also. Sometimes strange things happen. If I am not mistaken the fat SOB tries to shoot the trooper in the back as he was trying to het back to his patrol car.

    • @starshipfantastica
      @starshipfantastica 7 років тому +85

      Jake Outdoors, nope I watched the video. Everything seemed cool until the trooper ask to look in the trunk (I think the perp had a pound of weed in there.) The perp started to draw the gun and there was a struggle. Coates was a muscular guy so it was evenly matched. They broke off near the perp rear passenger side taillight and shot at each other starting at point blank range. The trooper was backing up while firing one handed. (Right handed) Think of a bulletproof vest, and think of shooting a handgun in a traditional one handed stance. The SOB got a lucky shot in the trooper's non protected armpit and the bullet pierce his heart. He was hit near the passenger side door and he collapsed and died within 2 steps by the passenger side headlight. As the instructor showing us the video said, it would matter if the trooper had a 1911 or a glock 17 same thing would have happened. Never under estimate a gun, 22mag is no joke.

      +starshipfantastica ALL bullets are dangerous, a .22 LR could also kill like that, but lets face it... that isnt the norm. It doesnt mean we shouldnt fear being shot or not be concerned with a .22 NAA revolver be it LR or WMR.
      I do a great deal of .22 WMR shooting, quite familiar with how it performs and all that with most barrel lengths. As you said.. the instructors words of "1911 or Glock, outcome is the same". That is true, a shot like that can stop people on the spot. But there's also been cases of people high on drugs or adrenaline and they've taken rounds to the heart and kept on going for a while to get medical attention.
      Now, recently was in a debate with somebody who brought up this example of a shortcoming of .357 Magnum. The real moral of this story is adequate penetration coupled with shot placement is what kills. 5 shots of .357 does you no good if you dont hit the vitals. As 5 shots of a lot of things do you no good without the proper placement.
      By all accounts, .22 Magnum is far from a joke and I do my best to make sure people understand that. I've got several .22 WMR guns, but in the handgun department the main two I use are my Kel-Tec PMR-30 and a Taurus 941 with a 4 inch barrel. From said 4 inch and 4.5 inch barrels respectively, it generates roughly the same kinetic energy as .380 ACP, a little above in some cases depending on selection of ammo. 30 rounds of a .380 comparable round is no joke in of itself, especially how quickly I can squeeze them off and accurately too.
      Still not my first choice of a gun, but it hasnt been my last either. Too many people are sold on the whole "If a handgun caliber starts with anything less than a .4 it's not worth my time" kind of attitude or some other ridiculous logic like that. When the US was involved in the Philippine's and fighting the Moro's using .38 Long Colt, they said it wasnt enough to stop the natives who were using drugs. Thus they wanted a larger caliber. During WW1 and WW2 when the British began switching from the .455 Webley to the .380/200(.38 S&W) round, the US was trying to tell them not to. They insisted that the round was adequate enough.
      History has vindicated them, if you look now at modern gun's we are constantly moving from larger and heavier to light and smaller. Because we understand that ft lbs of energy are somewhat meaningless in ballistics, its about having adequate penetration and having proper shot placement. So .22 LR and .22 WMR being light recoiling guns even in small guns like the NAA's makes for a good back up piece or even having a gun when you otherwise wouldnt. They can still do the job if you do yours. I feel them being single action is their main drawback, if a struggle ensues it can make getting a round off potentially difficult.

    As a female I'd like to put my2 cents in....Since I suffer from slight arthritis and carpel tunnel I had police officer friends (1 retired) tell me to get a .22....it kills, and not just rodents. This is no diss against Paul, his video was good. What I'd like to add is that being armed, is being armed. Sometimes testosterone gets in the way and they say the bigger the bullet the better chance you have? That's all well and fine, if you can shoot the caliber. And, if shot placement is precise. If I pull a 9mm and can't hit the bad guy, who do I hit?? But, if I pull my .22 and hit the bad guy in the throat, he's going down. Shot placement is what stops the threat. We don't always need to kill to stop a threat. And I'm not sure about many of you reading this, but I'm assuming taking a life isn't what's it's cracked up to be?? The bottom line is that we ALL hope we never get in a situation where we HAVE to use a firearm, but if we do, we for sure want the first bullet to count. I can shoot a .357 all day long but I might as well throw the gun at him, I'd probably have a better chance of hitting him. Again, this is just my opinion...I own a naa .22 magnum short barrel and the same in 22lr and magnum with a 2.5 inch barrel, both sidewinders. I'm always armed and ready to protect myself and my family. My hopes are that if I ever DO have to use this it won't take me more than 5 shots to stop the threat. If it does, then God help me.

      He's only been able to do once a week content for the last year. Before that life got in the way of production. A content provider needs to release about once a week to build a following. Much like TV programming that has an episode once per week. If the followers of the content can rely of the provider to produce it, then it will flourish... if it's good content of course. Coordinating with members of Paul's crew has the real world dilemma of working around all of the crews schedules. We all have day jobs and we have to balance all this. It's a bit of a floor show.

    Wow, someone who actually knows how to handle and shoot a single-action revolver! I see video after video of people fumbling with a single-action, so it's refreshing to see someone who clearly handles guns enough to have become "muscle memory." Paul clearly knows how to shoot a SA using the off-hand thumb to do the cocking - very fast, very controlled.
    I agree with all the conclusions of this video. I've owned and carry a NAA 1-5/8" .22 magnum for over 30 years, and it's found its way into my pocket a lot more than any other. I own a whole stack of various centerfire handguns, but the fact is, when one is making a quick run to the store, getting all strapped up with a Glock 29 and 5 spare mags is a bit over the top.
    I also like seeing Paul's clear understanding of the entire role of the sub-pocket revolver. You're gonna be close, so aim for the face/head for maximum effect. When shot in the face, very, VERY people are going to continue the fight, and that's the real purpose of carrying a gun.

    Hi Paul, another great video. Like your father, I have carried s NAA
    .22 mag so frequently that my jeans have faded around them and a hole wore through the pocket liner. I simply see them back up. I carry it everywhere I go, as a backup and even solo when necessary. Two aspects are critical for me. First is for contact shots. Unlike many pistols that will be pressed out of battery upon contact with an assailant, the mini revolver will fire. I consider the .22 mag mini revolver a ballistic knife. Second, snake shot. I have dispatched many venomous snakes with the mini revolver. It is very effective up to about 10'. I have even dispatched two deer that were hit by vehicles to end their suffering. The NAA mini revolver is a useful and capable tool when used properly. Thanks for your quality videos!

    For those who are interested; as of 2020:
    1) NAA makes the Sidewinder, which costs about 50% more than the standard NAA .22 Magnum and has a swing-out cylinder.
    2) NAA makes the Ranger II, which costs about twice as much as the standard NAA .22 Magnum and has a break-top action.
    3) Both the Sidewinder and Ranger II have ejector rods. The Sidewinder has a manual one, the Ranger II automatically ejects as you open the action.
    4) SpeedBeez makes speed loaders for .22 LR and .22 Magnum NAA revolvers. They run around $40 apiece. They have a spring garter and actually force the rounds in, not like a normal speed loader that just uses gravity, which is why they are a little more pricey than other speed loaders.
    5) Extra cylinders for standard NAA revolvers run about $50 each. You have to send in your gun so they can time the cylinder to your revolver. Extra cylinders for the Sidewinder and Ranger II run about $100 each.

No boasting, no brand name fanboy BS, just straight forward, honest reviews with heavy information applying to real world scenarios. Once again, excelent job at testing and getting to the point, letting the viewers decide on what's right for them through your real world experience, knowledge and testing. I carried one for years for the very reasons you stated, until.... I ended up in a bad situation that was entirely my fault,(that is the long version) but during the entire incident,all I could do was cuss myself wondering why I didn't have my CZ 75 on me. Well after everything was over, I went straight to carrying my CZ 75 and after 3 weeks I realized why I carried the NAA. I made a compromise after 3 weeks of carrying my CZ and purchased a Ruger LCR in .357. I have never felt naked or under gunned with it in my front pocket and a speed loader for back up. No one has ever made note of it being there for the last 4 years.

My backup magazine for my Glock (for home defense) is a 33 round capacity. I shouldn't need that many, but I have never heard a guy survive a shootout and say, "It would have been easier for me if I had fewer rounds."

    I have one of these (the 22lr) and I also have the flip out belt clip that makes the gun look like a pocket knife. It also gives you a substantially larger grip to work with when unfolded. There's also a belt buckle that you can snap these guns into for situations where you might have someone checking your pockets, but they might overlook your belt buckle.

    Absolutely love my NAA. Today I took the dog for a walk in gym shorts. Before I bought it I would have been unarmed. Even in gym shorts you barely know the NAA is there. I also love the craftsmanship in it. It's like a watch. As for reloading, you can buy an extra cylinder for it if you're that worried about it, but you have to send the gun in to get it timed. Most of the time it's my backup gun so I'm not too worried about reloads for it. It's my "get off me" gun.

    lol, his Dad's pants story. I can relate. I have carried my NAA .22 Magnum almost everyday of my life since I purchased it at a sporting goods store in 1992. Yes every day of my life! It has saved my life for sure. On one situation I was totally caught by surprise and I am positive I would not be typing this post if it was not for my NAA .22 Magnum. It was in the days right after Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans. The original point I was making is that he is totally correct saying your pants will get worn showing the outline of your NAA pistol. All my slacks and blue jeans had this wear. The solution is to use a small boot holster inside your waste band for slacks, and use the same boot holster inside the small otherwise useless pocket on your jeans. That small pocket on your jeans is absolutely perfect for holding your NAA .22 Magnum. Your untucked shirt will cover it almost all the time. Slipping your hand in your bigger lower pocket totally conceals the grip if your in "that kind of situation". Get that boot holster with the black metal clip made by Aker, and the oversized wooden or rubber grip. Your set. It will save your life and it is no more obtrusive or apparent as a belt clipped mobile phone. No one will see it unless they are really sizing you up and down. I have my CP. However, I have been told using the jean pocket qualifies as an open carry position. I won't go anywhere without my NAA .22 Magnum I will probably be buried with it. It is the best $145.00 I ever spent in my life.

Also with these guns, as well as any 22 revolver, you can shoot cheap ammo and not worry about FTF's that you'd likely get with semi-autos. Even good ones like the Buckmark and Ruger MK's can have trouble cycling cheap ammo.

    • @manictiger

      Accuracy's usually affected by the user or the quality of the gun, not the barrel length.

    • @kokocostanza2036
      @kokocostanza2036 5 років тому +1

      I have the .22 Magnum in the shortest barrel, and at around 40 yards or so, I still hit a 15" target 4 times out of 10. Not bad considering it was the first time I had ever shot it. Since then, I've bought the folding holster grip which almost gives it a full frame-sized grip. It also adds a safety by concealing the trigger and changes the printing so it doesn't really look like a gun in your pocket.
      Some people might think it's too small to be effective, but 8-900 fps with the Magnum is still around .380 speeds, and this can be carried in gym shorts pockets. No, it probably won't expand most, if any rounds, but with a caliber this small shot placement is key, and I would probably prefer penetration over expansion anyway.

The NAA .22(short) is the second firearm my dad ever gave me. And I couldn't agree more with you. It goes with me when otherwise I just wouldn't be able to conceal a weapon. Dad always called it his "church gun"😅. . It's rarely not in my pocket. After Dad gifted it to me, I ordered some Rose wood grips for it, even found a custom made kydex holster for it, as unnecessary as that may sound. Either way, I love that little gun. One day we happened to each be carrying our double deuce hideout guns at the range. We decided to attempt a little side by side competition: we would fire 10 rounds to see who could shoot fastest with good hits. We stood at 5 yards and did so simultaneously. The NAA was the winner each time. 5x5 beat 2x2x2x2x2. It certainly was a fun competition!

    The shortest versions having only the half moon front sight group very poorly and are for 5-6ft max. A snake gun or emergency close contact defense gun.
    The Black Widow version with 2" barrel and complete front & rear sights with white dots groups nicely on a pie plate at 5yds, much more versatile. You can get a combo version that comes with both the 22 mag and 22 LR cylinders.

    Great video as always. It would be interesting to get your perspective on the NAA Sidewinder and/or Ranger, as those two don't require you to take the cylinder completely off the firearm (Sidewinder opens to the side like most revolvers and the Ranger is a top break revolver).

    i have 10 pistols the smallest a naa 22mag up to a gov 45 colt made 1918 teen. the 45 is in near perfect condition and a safe queen.i usualy carry 9mm auto ,sometimes 38 special. the 22 mag is my back up. if things get bad and someone has you down stick the 22 mag in their ear then you do not have to worry much about shot placement or reloading time. the naa is verry well made, a joy to own.
