Fantastic! Another song you know from the radio but don't associate it with a great bass line....until Troy does it!!!! Loving the Westbury and the classical in the background. Cheers!!
you can hear it rumbling with the right gear... what a message woven into a grooy beat definitely takes me back to being a kid... Casey Kasem and the Top 10 Countdown
Fantastic job Troy! This is such a beautiful song on such a heartbreaking topic. April has been National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Since becoming a Guardian Ad Litem in 2021 for a county outside of Chicago, these lyrics have proved to be even more painful. These words hit extremely close to what I see at work.💔
Thank you Michael. Yes, this song still resonates strongly, doesn't it? Damaged children often grow into damaged adults and more needs to be done to protect them and nurture them back into good health.
Happy Wedding Anniversary Troy and miss Lynn! Bet though the years you Both have once in awhile just Stopped, and closed your eyes and "went back" to that first time you Both saw one another for the very first time and that Pilot Light was lit so that later on after some courting, "I DO" was spoken by the two of you to each other and 3 plus decades later Date Night means even more now! Glad you can keep busy doing a job you are familiar with and already know! Always loved the melody of this tune. Some gal I dated back then clued me in on the "message" of the song and that sorta wrecked it for me but still easy on the ears! Happy Weekend and Keep Strutting! Cheers From Ohio
Thank you. Yes, I remember all of the pivotal moments as through they just happened. Lynn is an absolute treasure. I'm not sure what I am. Funny story, Lynn was friends with my dearly departed sister. That's how we met. She told my sister that I reminded her of Jerry Garcia... we still get a laugh out of that one.
Love Suzanne Vega. One of my favorites off Solitude standing is The Queen and Soldier. Great cover and the tone.... I get a real 80s vibe off this bass. happy Anniversary to You and Lynn.
I fell in love with her very recently... like in the last month or so. I've watched a bunch of her live stuff and she's so consistently good. I heard a live version of that particular song and thought it was such an intriguing story. Thanks Tim!
Beautiful song, and there was something about the way you playing along to it really brought a certain energy to it, accentuating the sadness and intensity of it. Hats off to you and your playing - I watch all your content and seldom comment, but what you do is great and I hope you know you have a great lot of happy followers out there. A simple bass covers channel, bringing so much joy. Well done! Best regards from Norway.
I think it's a beautiful song too. Thanks for the insightful comment. There is something special about this song... the music, the lyrics, the melody, the mix all just work together so perfectly to create this "mood". That sort of magic doesn't happen every day and I could feel it every time I played it. Thanks and take care!
Always liked Suzanne Vega's voice. Never gave any notice to the bass in this one. Until now. Nicely done as always. Congrats on 31 yrs. Delivering home heating oil, You'll be busy. Gonna be a cold winter up by you this yr. Real shocker right 🤪✌️
I never gave her much thought until very recently, when I decided to do this one. Then I went down a bit of a Suzanne Vega rabbit hole and learned a few songs of hers that Bruce Thomas played on. I really like everything about her - the sound of her voice, her phrasing, her melodies, her lyrics... Thanks. I don't really mind the cold, it's the heat that I really detest.
Mike Visceglia is an amazing bassist! There are so many songs that better capture the arc of his mastery, but hey, Luka is a classic....as always, you crushed it Troy
Thanks Troy, well played as always. Congrats on the anniversary and good luck with the old/new job. Looking forward to seeing the Spector collection. I only have one but I hope I can buy some more.
I have been following you for some time now and have been consistently impressed with your playing and I LOVE your tone that you seem to wrangle out of every guitar you play. That said, I still watch for either of the Ric’s to show up. Love those instruments. Anyway, you do great and we appreciate what you share with us.
Thank you very much. It's strange, but I've accumulated all of these basses and I try to get them to all sound the same. Of course, they all have their own voices, but I try. No more Rics here. They were my least favorite basses of all. Thank again so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@TJH3113 Thanks for the reply. I remember you saying you didn’t really love the Rics. The growls and sounds you get make a Ric unnecessary anyway. The magic is certainly in your fingers and playing style. I like your comments along with the songs you play and you always do a great job identifying the actual bass player on the various tracks. You are helping us expand our world.
Wow, the early birthday treats just keep coming from Troy!🎂 Thank you Troy for another stellar performance of a signature song from another one of my favorite artists.
The few live clips I've seen of her doing it with a band, the bass player plays it in a different position, but this way made the most sense to me. She really does have some great songs, doesn't she?
OMG! My ear training work is working. Right before you started playing with the drum track, you played two notes and I thought "Crazy Train", and then I thought "This song is in F# Minor. I looked it up and it is. Great performance. Love the song, but it hits pretty hard. Harder than the similarly themed "Hell is for Children" by Pat Benatar.
I've been really impressed with how this bass has sounded on every video you've used it on, seems like you're digging it too. It's a pretty wild design for a production instrument.
I really like it as well. I think the P-style p/u moved back a bit towards the bridge really gives it more focus and definition. One of the things that attracted me to the bass was the pick-guard... it looks like a kid drew it... not symmetrical at all.
Great job .. this is a great tune.. but the message is very sad and unfortunately still goes on it sickens me to think that people could do this..thank you sir..hope your well and have a great day..
Mike Viscelgia is not only Suzanne Vega’s bassist but also her music director. AFAIK, he’s responsible for taking all of her vocal+acoustic compositions, and adding the arrangements we hear on the album. A great talent.
Congrats on 31 years! I’ve always loved this song (and the rest of the album, too). She has such an incredible voice. Great bass line, too. Thanks for sharing.
Of course I love the video, I love all of your videos that I have already watched, and some of them helped me a lot (Paranoid, Fortress around your heart...). But, sincerely, I prefer that a backing track be added. Your backing tracks have a perfect balance with your performances. Thank you.
Great choice and playing Troy. Suzanne Vega didn't play Ireland much, but I was lucky to see her in a small theatre here around the time the Solitude Standing album was due to come out and she was playing tracks from it as well as the first album. The live sound was as good as the studio recordings - which is pretty rare.
I really love it myself, Michael. I'm thinking of having a 5 string built for me (36" scale!) and, if I do, I want a reverse-P p/u put in this exact position. When Joe built the 4 string for me, we used the Guild basses as a template for the p/u position. Thanks!
Dude you are brilliant!! I love watching your videos. Just one question, how do you figure out the bass lines. I played a little bass when I was younger and you are inspiring me to pick it it back up again. Love you well done my man.
Excellent cover Troy. I was working on covering this song the past day but I don't think I'll bother now😉 Top job man on a fantastic song. Bravo Ps Matsumoku bass?
Thank you. Don't let my cover stop you! It's such a great song and there needs to be more covers of it out there. Yes, it was built at the Matsumoku factory
This song was wonderful when it came out. Not only a beautiful song in general, but also in it's method of bringing attention to a horrible issue. Although the song is about children suffering domestic violence, a friend of mine (who was a victim of spousal violence) misinterpreted the meaning and found a personal connection to her own past issues. However an individual interprets the meaning of the song, Suzanne Vega deserves a lot of respect for helping people find a connection that lets them know someone understands their pain. Also, that is an incredibly cute bass. What is the scale of the fret board? I recently bought an Ibanez miKro GSRM20 (in the incredibly hard to find purple) with a 28.6 scale. I love playing it (it's amazing playing slap bass even though I'm terrible at it) but I notice I get a lot of fret buzz due to the lighter tension on the strings at that scale. I want to avoid raising the string height so I wondered if you had any suggestions as to how to remedy this another way.
Very well said. It's a full scale (34") bass. If the bass is buzzing equally along the fretboard (which is the way I actually like to set my basses up), then the only way to get rid of the fret-buzz would be to raise the action. Flatwounds or rolling some of the high end off of your EQ might help a bit as well. The buzz would still be there, but would be less audible. If the bass is only buzzing in certain spots, then a truss rod adjustment might be the answer.
Oddly, I have literally never heard of Michael Visceglia before this play-through, I always thought that it was someone like Mark Egan or the like on this song.
You're an oil truck driver, eh? I spent the better part of a year driving a dump truck for a construction company, mostly moving dirt or gravel. My CDL is still active. You should watch the movie "Sorcerer" if you haven't already, it's the best truck movie ever made. Regarding this cover - very nice job, by the way - it's worth mentioning that Bruce Thomas actually played on a Suzanne Vega album, called "99.9F°", released in 1992. Which bass he used on that album, I am not sure.
Of sorts. I did it for 10 months back in late 2020 through August of 2021 and then tried a few other things. Turned out I liked this better than those other things, though it is a very demanding job. I'm only doing a 4 day work week, so it's manageable. I have noting but respect to the guys who do it 6 or 7 days a week during peak season. I've never heard of the movie, but I'll check it out. Yes, I was aware of Bruce playing on two of Suzanne Vega's albums. I asked him what his favorite tracks were off of 99.9F° and learned (and covered) them all, except for one. I will ask him which bass he used and put that info in the text beneath the first video of that material.
I, sort off, touch on that topic in my "Sign of Fire" video. I discuss some of the things I focused on as a young player and described some of the things I incorporated into my practice regime.
