- My friends over at the Angel Eyes channel left this comment on my Luka video - "Nice! Hey! Missing your ABBA covers. Please check out “If It Wasn’t For the Nights”. It’s got a fantastic bass line. 👏🤩" I'm pretty sure they made the original suggestion a while back but, in any case, here it is! In the mean time I will be awaiting my next assignment from Angel Eyes - / @angeleyesabba
"If It Wasn't for the Nights" by ABBA off of their Voulez-Vous album which came out in 1979 and featured a number of bass players, including Rutger Gunnarsson, Mike Watson, and Arnold Paseiro. I'm not certain who played on this one, but I think it's between Gunnarsson and Watson.
I'm playing the 1998 MusicMan Sterling through a SansAmp Paradriver.
I came to your channel for Sabbath and I stayed for ABBA
Next, he's gonna do Abbath. Face paint and all! 😁
I just found you. Better late than never. I love to focus on the bass line and you highlighted it for me. Thanks! There's a lot of subtlety and syncopation here. The Abba bassists were kicking it -- as well as the drummers.
Welcome! I started my channel out with lots of Rush and other progressive stuff, but I've really enjoyed branching out into other, more popular, music like ABBA. It's really great stuff!
Thanks for doing this! Easily one of the best ABBA songs that aren't super famous.
It was my pleasure. Thanks for watching.
I’ve always found that ABBA have a lot of hidden gems that people tend to miss because they’re overshadowed by the bigger hits. Soldiers, I Let The Music Speak, this song and One Man, One Woman are some of those songs.
Absolutely can never go wrong with ABBA! Simply a great cover as always!
Thank you kindly!
Fun song…bass line nice on the ears.
Glad you liked it. Thanks Mike.
Phucking amazing! It must be such a joy to support Agnetha and Frida's vocals. Those bass notes instantaneously following up and supporting their singing. I wish that I could enjoy their music like this.
It is a true joy to play along with these songs.
Such a catchy bass line, looks like it's fun to play. Nice Groove!
It is! Thanks Daniel.
ABBA's bass players were no slouches. This is one song I'm not familiar with but great cover as always Troy.
Big truth! Thanks so much.
Thanks Troy. I was so much into rock music back then that I refused to listen to these very catchy Abba tunes, but so many years later I have to admit that they were pretty good actually.
It was my pleasure, Wim. My experience was the same as yours.
Dude, you sound so good and fat!! Those damn StingRays are so “pulse-ified”! Bernard’s lookin down smiling!! Your bass playing has always been so good and just keeps reaching new heights!! It’s so bold, honest and true to the song. Great feel and care behind your notes!! Even your mistakes are fun to hear cuz you pick up very well and accept and blend them in. That’s quality dude!! My respect!!
Thanks so much Eric!
My fav "deep cut" ABBA song with a sleeper bassline!
I’m glad you liked it!
So good! and yet so underrated.
Well that was a nice way to start a Saturday morning, thank you!
I’m glad I could help. Take care!
Thanks Troy! Superb playing as always. I haven’t commented in a while, but rest assured, I never miss any of your weekly videos. ABBA brings the best of any music lover.
Thanks a lot San! I’m glad you liked it. Take care.
This is one of my absolute favourite ABBA songs! Please could do "Hole in Your Soul" in one of your future videos?!
That’s great to hear. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Laura. I’m not sure if I know that one, or not, but I will try to check it out. Take care.
How wonderful! This brings back so many memories from my youth. Wonderful performance!
I'm glad it brought you back. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Their voices are pure magic! Great playing and song selection!! Takes me back to a place so different than now.
Truth! Thanks so much!
SOUNDS GOOD PRETTY BASS
Thanks Mark
Oh my Troy...more goosebumps and thrills. You tore this one up for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Marvine!!!!!!!!!!
Being a confirmed Rocker (RUSH # 1), I absolutely appreciate your Fan, Wim Rijksen realizing years later how awesome many of these tunes were and still are! I was a silent listener of ABBA and so many artists and Bands of that Style of music. In my car or by myself I enjoyed many of these types of songs. But out and about with friends or at concerts, I kept this secret!🤣 And DISCO never made it on any of my playlists too! 😂 I also have never gotten into Hard Core Heavy Metal. The Screaming of lyrics just didn't work for me. ABBA is a part of my youth and anytime I hear them singing, I always "Go Back" and remember those good times! Great Saturday Treat Troy! Appreciated the FUN on your Face as you played! Cheers From Ohio
I can relate to exactly what you are saying.
I could not have said it better myself.
This made my day!!! Thank you!
That's great to hear! Any time! Take care.
Another winner, Troy! Sterling job, as always. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks again Forrest!
Woohooo another great ABBA cover, thanks mr. Troy
Thank you very much, I’m glad you liked it!
Well this was fun!
It was, wasn’t it? Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!
Awesome thank you! All your ABBA covers are pure bliss 🙏❤️
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!
Doron, please check out his cover of "One Of Us"... it's out of this world. 🤯
Very nice cover of these always cool ABBA's basslines ! ;-)
Thanks Jonathan!
Great bounce and groove! 🎸
Thank you Jon.
As always, your covers are accurate, musical and inspirational!
Thank you very much Rob!
True words!
Sir, I just wanted to say that my father and I have bonded over your videos for YEARS. I started playing bass in High School, the same time he picked up his own bass, and we've bonded over your covers constantly. Drooling over the basses, marveling at the masks and just grooving to your jams always. I remember many times where we were sitting around and my dad would say "put on the funky dude with the masks!" Thanks giving us these moments!
Wow, thanks for sharing such a great story, Nolan. Most of the masks are from Death Studios, if you or your Father are ever in the market for one. Thanks again and take care!
I’ve made comment about you smiling when you play something you like. I’ve just started smiling again in the last year. I lost my wife of 35 years two years ago. Whenever I’d play things she liked she’d dance all over the house with the biggest smile. She was my biggest fan and groupie. I stopped playing when cancer made it where she couldn’t get around. It made her sad she couldn’t dance. Just in the last year or so I’ve been able to pick it back up and play. Sometimes I still see her smiling and dancing. And that makes me smile. As I said I really enjoy seeing you play the bass. The bass is my most favorite !
Thanks Troy
Hi James. I remember the comment. I'm not a big smiler ( or showers of emotions in general), so, if I do crack a smile it's usually genuine. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope your memories of your Wife are a blessing to you. One of my selfish wishes is that I pass away before my Wife does. She's much stronger than I am. Thanks so much and take care!
@@TJH3113 Yes my memories of her dancing to my music are a wonderful blessing. It took me a little while to see it. I understand how you feel about going first. But it will be just as tough on her as it would be you. As you know, only God knows when. You just have to live, love and make every day count. Every day !
Keep up the good work ! I do enjoy it so !
perfect playing and tone
Thank you very much, that was nice of you to say.
I am soooo happy I found your channel! Your covers are amazing, keep it going! Best wishes from Lithuania ♥️🇱🇹
Thank you very much in Emilija. Take care!
This was excellent!!! I love music, and you made it better!!!
Thanks a lot!
Stellar work! Your playing is effortless yet so powerful and funky. Never realised how incredible of a bass line this song has!
Thanks so much! To be honest, I never gave the bass-line to this song a second thought either, until it was suggested.
Brilliant bass line and thanks for sharing
Thanks Niall, for watching and taking the time to comment.
Wow
Thanks, Edward
Lovely tone Troy, you're enjoying that as much as I am 😁
Thank you David!
Fantastic playing have a great weekend
Thank you Amin.
👏👏👏👏 🎸
Thank you Marisa.
What a beautiful bass! I just recently fell in love with Music Man basses and picked up a Sting Ray Special. That bass really suits the way you play!
Thank you very much Spencer and congratulations!
You are so welcome Troy. My son is taking me to Half Moon Bay and we'll stay at the Ritz Carleton for a few days . Say hi to Lynn and your mother Love, Marvine 🙂
Awesome! I hope you both have a wonderful time. I will. Say hello to your Son from me.
Thanks Troy... You did it again. been extremely depressed all day. I just turned on the computer and saw your video. I clicked on and. You are a p like magic a big smile came over my face. You are a phenomenon!!!!!!! Thanks!!!! Perfectly played Troy. Thank you so very much!!!!! God bless you so very much Troy ;-)
It was my pleasure Marvine. I'm so sorry to hear that you were feeling down and I'm so glad to hear that I was able to brighten your day a bit. Take care.
Hey Troy, watching these I realize what I was missing out on when all I played was hard rock. So much fun here. I guess I'll never get Edwin McCain out of you but I can see why. You love these tunes and it shows. Always appreciate your videos.
Hi Chris. We didn't know any better, did we? Thanks so much and take care!
Okay... you got me to listen to a song I can't stand just so I can watch (and listen to) you play.... my guess is I'll probably go into anaphylactic shock after I hit the like button. ;)
Do you need an EpiPen? Thanks a lot.
Wow! You never cease to amaze me, Troy! How come you learn the tracks so fast, including all those tricky parts, adding those little notes that might appear on a third chorus only, and stuff like that? Your musical ear is just amazing. Thanks so much for taking my request! This is such an underrated (but loved) song among ABBA fans. Greetings my friend!!!
Thank you! Actually, nothing happens quickly on my end. I believe you suggested this song back on my "Does Your Mother Know" video, which I uploaded back in January. I don't remember when I started learning it, but I'm sure I put a few weeks into it. There were many little details that took time to learn and commit to memory. After recording it, it sat on my desktop until someone else happened to request it. I'm very glad you liked it. I certainly enjoyed learning it. Take care!
@@TJH3113 Thanks for the reply, Troy! I've been listening to this cover every day. I've shared it in a Facebook ABBA fans group and they all LOVED it. Would you mind doing 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' in the following weeks? Whenever you want. No rush! haha. That song is not that complicated, actually the bass line is pretty simple but efficient! Kind regards.
Nice Troy, I like how you punch every single note. Really does the song justice. I think that’s why I love your channel, because we play the same way. Cheers my friend..👍
Thanks Kim!
Couldn't agree more!
Nice playing bass playing
Thanks a lot!
I'm always in awe of your precise but melodic playing.
I'd love to see you take a shot at Knowing Me, Knowing You, if it isn't too chaotic for you
Thanks Jacob. I'll check it out... if I remember correctly, I think its a bit all over the place.
@@TJH3113That it is haha, so I don't blame you if you don't. Cheers!
Жаль что нельзя после каждого повторного просмотра ставить ещё один лайк.
Я ценю доброе слово больше, чем лайк в любой день. Спасибо большое.
Would love to hear you cover ABBA’s “My Mama Said” if you haven’t already!
I’ll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Troy...you so cool when youplay this K lovd itg. Marvine
Thanks Marvine!
Troy, the last two videp@@TJH3113
Abba from Sweden
Yes!
Superb performance. R. Gunnarsson must be very happy from up there!!!!
Thank you Anthanassios, but I believe it may have been Mike Watson who played bass on this one, though I'm not certain. Sometimes it's hard to tell the two apart.
It was Mike Watson.
I would say Rutger would have played it differently. Maybe more Dancing Queen style.
@@Claude_van He did when playing it live.
@@chris200179 Oh wow! What a good bass. Thanks for the info. The Wembley version is really better, I think.
Man. You sound great on a Musicman. I appreciate that you don't use a ton of that steely treble that these have. You really sound fantastic on all your rigs, though. Your hand gets that nice high mid traction and you're really consistent with your touch.
Thanks Scott! I really struggle to get a sound I'm happy with from them and I recorded a couple of videos before this one (have not uploaded them yet) where I overdid it with the Treble knob. I just bumped it up a bit, but the MM high-end is so shrill and brittle sounding. My only 5 string is a MusicMan and, while I love the bass, I'm not crazy about the way it sounds or the trouble I have to go through to get a sound I can barely tolerate out of it. I've got an interesting plan for it, so stay tuned.
That right index finger point in the beginning was so 80’s. Loved it. Were you a backup dancer for them back in the day? Only kidding 😉. As always, great job.
It just seemed like the right thing to do. Thanks Art!
Fantastic job Troy ! Where do you find the time to learn these ? I really like you style ! I wish I lived closer I’d get you to teach me a bit.
Thanks Troy
Thank you James! Most of my spare time is spent playing the bass and learning songs. It’s really the thing I enjoy doing most. If you lived closer I’d be happy to have you stop by and visit for a while.
Mike Watson.
That's what I understand.
That's what's great about bass, you can jump from Sinatra to Sabbath with pretty much the same gear and a little EQ-ing
Great point!
Quick question, do you have any strategy to figuring out these songs bass lines and learning them efficiently? Thanks
I don't really think about it too much, but each song dictates the way I'm going to approach learning it and I don't know how it's going to go until I start. Some songs, I learn note for note, from start to finish. Some songs, I'll glance over all of the parts and then go back to fill in the minor details. Some songs, I'll tackle the most difficult parts first and then go back and polish up the easier sections and string it all together. Sometimes it's a mix and match of all of these approaches.
@@TJH3113 thanks, thats a good answer
This is one of those bass lines that starts off a bit average but turns into awesome
Truth!
Request: Mr Blue Sky by ELO
I did that a while back. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.
First?
Did the balloon drop work?
@@TJH3113 I don’t know but this excellent video popped up right away. Thanks, Troy.
@@TJH3113 🤣
Great work but that bass is crying out for an SRS rest ~!!!
Thanks Tim!
@@TJH3113 Now about an SRS unit for this bass......
Love the tone. Usually every time someone is playing a Music Man it is super zingy. You got a great tone out of that beast like a super charged jazz bridge pickup. It fits the track great.
I always struggle a bit trying to get a tone out of the MusicMan basses. I find it works best just to leave the treble alone. Their top end can get a little shrill very quickly.
@@TJH3113 yeah that's the music man sound all top end zing/shrill. You unlocked some versatility out of that one.
Mike Watson plays this one.
Thanks!
I have a Sterling SUB that looks exactly like this bass. It's my go to practice bass. It sounds awesome. I will soon own a REAL MusicMan though!!
Cool! Hey, if you like it, keep playing it. Some of my favorite basses are the less expensive ones. How much a bass costs or where it was made has nothing to do with whether it's a great bass or not.
