RIP Julee Cruise who passed away on June 9th 2022. Julee was best known for her work with, film maker, David Lynch. While I am very familiar with "Blue Velvet" and "Twin Peaks", I know Julee from her association with the B-52's, though I never knew her name until today. She filled in for Cindy Wilson in the 90's when Cindy took some time off from touring. The first time I saw the B-52's back in the 90's I knew right away that it wasn't Cindy, but I didn't mind. Julee sang great, but what I remember most was that she never stopped dancing the entire time she was on stage. Not once. Not for a moment. I remember her wearing a silver alien/space-woman sort of outfit and she projected pure enthusiastic energy on stage that was infectious. Here's a great clip of Julee performing this song with the band - • The B-52's Roam live w... Make sure you stick around until the second verse to hear her vocal chops.
Julee committed suicide and I found another connection to the B-52's, and to this song specifically, in this quote by her husband who announced her passing - "For those of you who go back I thought you might want to know that I said goodby to my wife, Julee Cruise, today. She left this realm on her own terms. No regrets. She is at peace. Having had such a varied music career she often said that the time she spent as a B filling in for Cindy while she was having a family was the happiest time of her performing life. She will be forever grateful to them. When she first stepped up to the mic with Fred and Kate she said it was like joining the Beatles. She will love them always and never forget their travels together around the world. I played her Roam during her transition. Now she will roam forever. Rest In Peace, my love, and love to you all."😢
"Roam" by the B-52's off of their "Cosmic Thing" album which came out in 1989 and featured Sara Lee on bass. I've long been a supporter of female bass players. Any woman who decides to pick up the four-stringed equivalent of a tuba deserves all the support I can give. A portion of the album was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in West Hurley, NY which I unknowingly drive by a few times a week at my current job. The album also had two notable producers - Nile Rogers and Don Was. The song is pretty straight forward, but has lots of subtle variations throughout that I tried my best to capture. I absolutely love this album, there's not a bad song on it. "Deadbeat Club" is another great song.
Lynn and I have seen the B-52's twice, one time in the 90's that I mentioned above and, again, 5 or 6 years ago? The first time was great. The second was good, but Fred Schneider was very distracted by someone in the audience who was recording the show on his/her phone/tablet and he wouldn't let it go. Anytime he wasn't singing, he was at the front of the stage, pointing his finger and yelling at the person. In between songs he would rant and rave about the person. When they played "Rock Lobster", during the part where he sing-talks "Down, down, down..." he finished the phrase with "... and put that damn tablet DOWWWWN!" The only other artist I've seen behave like that was John McCrea from Cake. I would love to see them on their farewell tour (they're playing two nights at The Beacon Theatre in NYC), but $495 for Loge seats ain't gonna happen.
I recorded this video back in 2020 using a bass that Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars had just finished up for a customer. He was nice enough to let me borrow it for an afternoon to record a few videos with it before its rightful owner took possession of it. It seems as though I did a little demo of the bass after the song finished. www.mbjguitars.com
I worked with Julee Cruise for years while at Warner Bros. Records - Thank you for posting this. Touring with the B-52's was a very happy time for Julee.
I'm sorry for your loss. She seemed like a gentle soul. She looked like she was having the time of her life when I saw her and I'll never forget it. I hope, wherever she is, that she's basking in some of the joy she spread while she was here.
so julee with b52s in Glasgow over 20 years ago ,she was amazing as were the rest of the band, god bless julee x
I miss 80's and 90's "College Radio" stations.
Me too. If I hear "Jet Airliner" again, I'm going to drive off a cliff.
I've heard this song a thousand times on the radio but never listened to what the bass was doing. This is the way the bass should have sat in the mix! It's so enjoyable to hear you play even a seemingly simple bass line. Thanks Troy!
Thanks so much, Sam!
Beautiful tribute, Troy.
Thank you kindly, Mark.
Probably my favourite B-52’s songs. Great job!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it.
criminally underrated bassist that is covered by the best on utube
Thanks Louis
We are all of us occupying time and space in a very troubling era of or world. Be sure to remember to keep in contact with those you care about. Never assume that "I'll just catch up with them next week". Regrets can be difficult to shake as the years go by. Be good to each other.
Great cover as always!
Thank you for the very wise words.
Man,
I'm back in Junior High and everything seemed timeless, sunny and free. Thank you Troy!
Awesome! Sound like a good time. Take care, Chris!
Love the cover Troy. Probably never mentioned, but I find the back stories are equally appreciated as the bass cover. Thanks for putting the time into them.
Thanks so much, Mike.
Julee Cruise was in a realm of her own. I knew about her death, but didn't know the terms. Thank you for sharing this as well as this super clean bass part.
She certainly was, wasn't she? Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Very Sorry to hear about Julie. Beautiful tribute, thank you so much for sharing your experiences.
I never got to see the B52s in concert, but absolutely loved everything about them from the beginning.
This is probably my favorite song of theirs, just as a sublime “feel even better than good” pure pop confection.
I absolutely agree with you about female bass players, Sara Lee is great, I really love Aimee Mann’s bass playing, and countless others.
Also gotta mention, June Millington is a beast. (As are all the players in Fanny.)
And the more I hear these basses, the more I love…..❤️
Thanks Woody.
Sad news about Julee. Thanks for posting this. My favorite B52's song, together with Love Shack. There's a vocals only version on UA-cam that highlights how good Kate and Cindy really are. Thanks Troy
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I'll have to check that out. One thing that was cool about their vocals was that they often same the sang line before breaking off into harmony parts and they did it flawlessly, not unlike ABBA.
I especially love the extended coda!
Thank you, Alastair. I'd all but forgotten that I'd done that.
I have always enjoyed this song, but even as a bass player I was always listening to the beautiful vocal harmonies and never noticed the bass. Thanks for shining a light on that "four-stringed tuba"!
Thanks a lot!
I was the only guy in an all-girl band when I first started playing bass 11 years ago. We did this song and it's amazing how close you play it to the way I learned it. It's actually much simpler than it sounds but it's such a blast to play - especially the instrumental bridge. Thanks for covering it.
Very cool! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I love this song, I love Troy’s covers and of course I love Kate Pierson. Brilliant cover Troy.
Thanks Tom.
Quite saddening to hear what happened to her, but I, of course, hope she is at peace. Love the B-52s, and of course a great bass cover as always.
Yes, me too. I read that she was suffering from Systemic Lupus along with depression. Thanks.
@@TJH3113 Ahh yeah. Absolutely sorrowful indeed. You are welcome.
Great job. This is that one song I like by the B-52's. Ha!
Thanks! Oh come on!
A year or two ago I said I wasn’t going to comment on all of your videos because you’re always great and I didn’t want to be repetitive. I guess I’m a lying sack of puppy poo.
Great job as always. Keep noodling. Love it.
Welcome back! Please feel free to comment as much or as little as you please. Thanks so much, Art.
One of the great things about Wild Thing was that the B-52's finally got a bass guitar. They finally sounded complete. I've always loved this band but it almost felt so odd that one of the most grooving bands around didn't have a bass player. Kate had some synth bass here and there but it doesn't match having an active bass player. Just listen to the work on this song here. Awesome.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks.
Thanks for posting. Great bassline. Cool bass as well. I will now be going down a B-52 wormhole.
Thanks... Have fun!
Great tribute. The B52s have some fun songs. Nice bassline played very well. Love everything after the song ended as well (04:35 - 06:45)
Thank you!
What a fun Saturday song lol.
It is, isn't it?
Loved the tune you played while demo'ing the bass at the end, sometimes I forget that you're truly a master of the instrument, and not just the number one cover man.
Beautiful cover, beautiful bass, and excellent playing. Thanks!
Thanks and you are too kind.
I like your bass playing while I'm drumming using virtual drums. 😁 stress reliever!
Awesome!
Another favorite.
I'm very glad you liked it, Freeman!
@@TJH3113 The bass is my favorite instrument. I can't play anything or even sing...or whistle! So I just work sound for my church. Oh and I'm probably half-deaf too!
That bridge is crazy!
It just comes out of nowhere, right?
Brilliant tune by a great band.
And of course, a great cover Troy 👍🏼😃
Nice tribute too ☺️
It is, isn't it?
Thanks Scott!
Ah the college years!
Good times!
A wonderful tribute - both the video and your words.
Thank you very much.
Outstanding bass tone, absolutely lovely, and you play this song as if it was an easy thing... My most sincere respects to you.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it.
@@TJH3113 How wouldn´t I?... Cheers!
Phenomenal stuff, as always, but extra so this time. Where to start? I won't.
Thanks so much.
RIP Julee. May you continue to play bass up in heaven.
You always sound great but this one perfectly captures the sound that made me pick up my first bass.
Great to hear! Thanks John.
Great job Troy. I never realized that bass part was so moving. Fun song.
Thank you very much.
I learn a lot about bassline construction from your videos. You hear things in them that I can never follow on the records and bring them to the fore. It's one of the great resources of UA-cam.
Great to hear! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Excellent !¡!¡!
Many thanks, Eric!!
Flawless.
A great feelgood song too.
Thanks Peter.
Yeah, such a fun piece of music, isn't it?
@@TJH3113 I was in too much of a hurry to hear you play when it flashed up to read your story about Julee.
God rest her soul.
oh man...how I love this as it takes me back. Thanks Troy for an always masterful cover
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank Mike.
Fabulous work!
Thank you Ben!
What a fun song and band! Great job Troy!
It is and they are! Thanks Todd!
Diggin' that tone!
Thanks Mike.
Nice job on a track that one wouldn't think had such a cool bass part. I dig the sound of that bass too.
Thanks Nelson! 👍
Great!!
Thanks Gustavo!
great song!
It is, isn’t it!
This song always puts me in a great mood! Those women sing so good, gives me goosebumps 🤗!!
Me too!
Wow awesome. Love the tribute. You are always spot on…
Thank you very much William!
Good job Troy. Thank you for this tribute ;-)
Thank you Jonathan, it was my pleasure!
Loved the improv at the end, Troy - and the new bass sounds really great.
Many thanks!
Nicely done Troy... those girls have a great harmony.
Thank you. Yes they do, don't they?
Awesome cover have a great weekend
Thank you, Amin! You too!
This period of the b52's was gold. A bunch of great tunes and a solid band! Nice work.
Truth!! Thanks Tim.
Great job Troy !
Thanks Matt!
You did this so well!! One of my favorites! One day I am going to get up my nerve and do a video lol. I have no confidence whatsoever.
Thank you Dana, I’m glad you liked it! You should! If I can do it, anyone can. Nobody has less confidence than I do.
I was just listening to Planet Claire the other day. The B-52s have always been phenomenal because they do their own things.
Very cool! Truth!
That was good thank you Troy...
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Destin.
This song has been in the back of my head for years! I hate that it’s because Cindy passed away that I found out the name of it, but I’m glad you made a tribute to her
I'm glad I could help, Noah.
Love this. Your story in the caption made me tear 😢 up... I took my daughter to see the B52s at a renowned outdoor venue in my town of Woodinville WA in the early 90s. Funny story about running into Fred at our town Target store a few hours pre-show. 😅 Thanks for recording and sharing this. ❣️
Thanks Carolyn. Yes, it's very sad, but I respect her wishes and it's comforting that she had her husband's support. Targets were around back then? Some relatives were on a flight to Florida with Fred once back in the 90's. They said he stuck out like a sore thumb.
@@TJH3113 Sorry... early 2000s! I saw a flash of green, orange a bright pink plaid zip around the end of an isle. I had tickets to the show that evening, and knew it could only be one person. Went about my shopping. Then locked eyes with Fred Schneider as we were walking in opposite directions- but toward each other - down the same isle. He looked terrified to potentially be engaged in an interaction - which I read immediately. I just nonchalantly said, "hi, Fred" and kept walking. He said "hello" and was visibly relieved to leave it at that. Then as I was driving out of the parking lot, I noticed him standing outside in front of the store. Whipping his head back & forth, hand on hip, checking his watch repeatedly. I thought about offering him a ride to the venue (just 10 minutes away) but chickened out.
This tune has an awesome bass line, and even though most people find the B-52's synonymous with "Love Shack" or "Rock Lobster", this is, IMHO, their best track. Fantastic job on recreating it for us!
Thank you Forrest.
This is great 3113, thanks!
I’m glad you liked it. Thanks Scotty!
At 55 I've been learning bass for 3 years (never too late right?) and your channel has helped to inspire me! ... and you've now uploaded one of my all time loved tracks - what a perfect weekend! A big thanks from the UK!
That is awesome! And, you are correct, it is never too late! Thanks and take care.
❤️
Thanks Cindy.
Maravilhoso meu amigo .... Muito bom
Com um final magnífico....deixando o som do baixo mais lindo ainda....parabéns pela execução...muito bom escutar seu contra-baixo.
Forte abraço
Muito obrigado!
Grande abraço de volta para você!!!
Nice tone Troy!
Thanks Joe!
So I was playing this, kinda in the back ground and my wife says, "Well that bass sure is coming in heavy!" 😂😂😂 Great job!
Love that! Thanks Jim!
The B52's are one of those groups that I'm sure everyone knows and enjoys since their music elicits memories Big Time of our youth! One of my sons LOVED the musical video of "Roam" too when it was popular back in 1990! I was not aware that Julee Cruise filled in for Cindy Wilson but I have no doubt she made Cindy Proud too. Really appreciate you linking the Live performance of Julee filling in on this tune too! Your selections and story telling are so appreciated and I'm Very sure I'm not alone in saying too. Been following you long enough to know you are not a Fan of Pats on The Back BUT I'm gonna say it anyway! I've always been of a mind to Never Ever give up...but not having walked in another's shoes I completely understand Julee singing Ol Blue Eye's rendition of "I did It My Way" as she left this realm to go roam on her own. I hold true to my feeling of "There but for the grace of God go I". Now, when you were dancing with your strings AFTER you were done playing Roam...between 5:00 to 5:20 is really did sound to me as though you were playing a riff of Robin Trower's "Bridge Of Sighs" ??? As much as I love hearing and watching you play the main title of the video...I really did watching you go off into a zone playing different lines and riffs and just seeing what works. I have found that to be sheer fun as compared to mastering a cover or tune! I needed to read, hear and morph into this video Troy. Many thanks for holding my seat in This Classroom! I have no apple for the Teacher but will leave some choice Beef Jerky🤣 Cheers From Ohio
Thanks, once again, for another Top Shelf comment. Everything I played after the song ended were either snippets of songs I've written or just stuff I noodle around with. The riff you mentioned was actually turned into a song titled, "Nothing Left to Say" that's on my SoundCloud page.
Love the channel! Take Mom back to Micky D’s!
Thanks James. Soon...
There's a clip somewhere of Chrissie Hynde stopping the entire show because of people recording during the show at a Pretenders concert, I can't seem to find the video but there are plenty of articles out there about it.
I'm on the fence about it. I like to take 30-90 second clips as a memento of some of the shows we see, but I always do it discretely and never block anyone's view. There are a lot of people who do things quite differently.
Nice Troy….👍👍
Thanks Kim 👍
Very nice cover and tribute in your comments. I have to confess that this album is a guilty pleasure for me and I agree completely that there's not a bad song on it!
Edit: also I literally LOL'd at "four stringed equivalent of the tuba" 🤣
Thank you. Nothing to be guilty about, it's a great album! "Channel Z"!!! Come on!
@@TJH3113 yes!
Dude, this was seriously killer. Great tone, perfect fills and your enthusiasm for this classic rocker is readily apparent as evidenced by the improv at the end.
Also, I had no idea who Julee Cruise was but wow, definitely a sad loss. This was the song her husband played after she had passed on. Requiescat in Pace to her, and thank you for highlighting her stint with the B-52's.
I am curious though, are you familiar with the band Lacuna Coil at all? Because with your tone, I could easily imagine you covering their song "Our Truth" and absolutely killing it. Great bass line in that song too.
If you aren't familiar, I recommend checking them out sometime. One of my all-time favorite bands. Cristina Scabbia is such an incredible vocalist, and the rest of the band is every bit as talented.
Thanks so much.
I had to refresh my memory on Julee. So sad.
I've heard the name, but I don't think I've ever heard anything by them. I'll try to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hey man. I really enjoy all of your bass covers and especially like the rush covers. I’d love to see you try out Dream Theater’s Learning to Live. Has a great bass part.
Thanks Austin. I'll check it out!
Shout out to Joey Kruse for his premier bass building skills.
Big truth!
Hi Troy, Have you ever considered learning the song: "Make Me Smile" by Chicago ??? The bass is all over the neck and you would do a fabulous job on it !
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you Troy your the best. I know you have many subscribers and I'm sure you get a lot of song request. So with that said, I would understand if you decided not to learn this song for what ever reasons you may have. I learn a lot from your videos and appreciate the hard work you put in to dissecting these tunes for the bass. Thanks man...
Who was the bass player when this song was recorded?
Sara Lee.
Hello again dude 😎 hey do you know Mike Kreple by chance?
Hey Troy! The name doesn't ring a bell, but I'm really bad with names... and faces.
I try request great bass songs:
The Distance by Cake.
:-)
Love Cake... I'll check it out!
Who is the tall headed guy behind your right shoulder? Is that supposed to be Darth Plagueis?
He's called "Healer" and it was sculpted by Jordu Schell. I don't believe it was based on any existing character.
Fun! Hey, let's try ----> Sweetheart ---> by Franke & The Knockouts - 1981. Good luck! :)
Never heard of it, but I'll check it out!
@@TJH3113 Oh boy! Shez a Sweetheart goodie! The house roof should fall down - - - once again! ;-) They have a live video synch on YouTubby from American Bandstand that shows some of the bass player straight on. Might help a bit. How exciting . . . you will luv this tune!!
@@whiteninja9481 That's a great one and I already started learning it! The only problem is that it's not available on iTunes. I found it on Amazon, but for some reason I cannot download it on to my computer. Not a big deal, but Amazon's player is a bit more clunky than iTunes.
@@TJH3113 I really hope it all works out for you playing it. I searched your already-played songs and did not see it in your published list. Glad you are giving it a try. Looking at my 45 RPM records I see that I own it! Bought that puppy in 1981 when I was a DJ--haha! I just found out the bass player in this song has been with Blondie for the past 25 or so years and is still there. His name is Leigh Foxx. Cheers! Again, check out the YouTubby video titled ---> SWEETHEARTS Franke & The Knockouts
I've wanted to ask about your fan club behind you there. Who are these "friends?"
I collect masks and other, horror related, items. Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
can u play black dog by Led Zeppelin some time?
I'm not a big Zep fan, but I'll check it out.
