Here's a cover that might not have seen the light of day had my Scottish friend, Stewart Mckinlay, and I not had a conversation about it earlier today.
The song is "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer or just Sixpence.
It's a fairly simple bassline bit has some really tasteful parts. I find the recurring chromatic part @ 01:00 interesting, as well as the use of two-note chords during the verses.
In looking up some info for the song, I was surprised to learn that they were/are a Christian band and that they are from America. Actually, they were founded in Texas, but I guess that's close enough. Haha. I always though they had an "English" sound about them.
They seem to have gone through a number of bass players but it looks like a fellow by the name of J.J. Plasencio played on this song. The song is off their third, self-titled album which came out in 1997.
I'm playing my "Classic 70's Precision" to which I added a bridge position Jazz pick-up.
Well, I never even heard the bass in this song until you shed some light on it. Pretty cool bass line.
+Hal Otacon Cool.
A familiar song that I never realized how busy the bass was in! Sounds great!
+Alex M Thanks.
I never thought I would listen to this song all the way through. But I have done so. Great performance.
I have played bass since I was 10 years old, and I am 14. All of your videos help me learn the groove and technique. You're an amazing bass player as well!
hey, are u still playing bass??
Pretty close! thanks for playing it. Big thumbs up. More importantly wished I played all those masks!
JJ Plasencio hey.... ! Appreciate the work you did.
The legend himself!
Best cover by far on youtube
Awesome. I'm glad that you liked it.
I agree.
GREAT job, nice bass line, and that woman singing had me falling in love with her long before I ever saw her face. Her voice is like that of a sweet and innocent angel.
Thanks a lot. Yeah, there is something about her voice that I like as well.
Great bass... thanks for posting! I'm currently trying to reproduce this bass line on my Nord keyboard for the 3 piece semi-acoustic band I've just joined - at the age of 70 😊
It is a great bass-line, isn't it? Good luck, I hope it comes out great!
Awesome bass line and a beautiful voice. Two of my favorite things in music. Thanks!!!
You captured every nuance of the song perfectly. I am just learning it by ear, but didn't catch the three versions of the 'chromatic part' or the two-note chords until I saw this.
Nice job as always! Your technical skills never fail to impress! :-)
Always liked that arpeggiated part, too. And the vocal harmonies in the chorus. And the British sound in pop/rock music. And your bass playing.
+Roland Czili (Tinderwet) Me too! Thanks.
great job as usual .. I always liked that bass part .. and that bass sounds great!
Nice bass line Troy. Your chanell is always bring me new artists (that I didn't know) like this which I think great :)
The best bassist on the 'Tube! Can't get enough.
I share this to my wife. Thanks TJ, as always.
+Sergio Moreno Nice.
You always manage to make me reconsider previously overlooked bass lines from the nineties. Thank you one more time.
+PookLowEnd Thanks, that was nice of you to say.
You are one amazing bassist! Love the videos. I am learning so much watching you. Thanks!
Thank you for the very kind words. Take care Fred!
Geddy style. Great cover. Very instructive. Thank you.
As usual - flawless cover!
Thank you.
What's more fun? Watching Troy's fingers or his head? I still can't decide, but listening to him is pure pleasure...
Another great cover - thanks and keep 'em coming.
OMG....awesome bass Troy!!!!! Goose bumps!!! Love the way you play this!!!! Marvine
Thanks a million Marvine!
Friggin' perfection. Full of soul and feeling. Absolutely inspiring.
Thanks so much!
i've always loved the bass in this song. thank you
Me too! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
You play that bass like a pro ! Another great performance and I really like this song too. Bass guitar level is real nice as it usually is with your other songs.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
Great bass line. This song has more hooks than grandad's tackle box. Glad to see you do this one.
It is, isn't it? Haha. Thanks, Glad you liked it.
Me quedé encantada de ver tu performance con el bajo Troy. Hasta me dan ganas de aprender a tocar así disfrutarlo como tu lo haces.
Muchas gracias. Espero que disfrutes aprendiendo la canción tanto como yo.
Didn't expect this one lol Awesome!
+LISTEN UP! A few people have said that. Thanks.
Even if you cant stand the Red Hot Chillie Peppers (I can only take so much) check out "soul to squeez".. it has great melodic bass and I know you could do it justice.
Such a wonderful cover
Thanks!
Great Job! What a neat little tune, this was on the soundtrack She's all that. (1999) Freddie Prinze and Rachael leigh Cook...
Cheers.
Great cover ! Thank you very much !
Thanks a lot Julie!
Excellent ..i enjoyed watching this , it was really on point.
Thank you very much.
Love it!
Was never fond of the feminine quality of this song. But I also never heard or paid attention to the bass. Now I've got a new appreciation for the song. Thanks again, Troy!
Great to hear. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Que cool!!!! Muy buena interpretación Troy!!!! Saludos un fuerte abrazo!
PD: cada vez que veo el video lo disfruto! 😎👍🏼
Muchas gracias amigo mío. ¡Espero que te encuentres bien!
Mark of a great musician is being able to play all genres of music. Well done.
Thank you.
Great cover, sir! =)
J.J. Plascencio always did great stuff on Sixpence's work during his two-album tenure with the band. If you want to hear a particularly tasty example, listen to "Love, Salvation, and the Fear of Death" from the album before this one, This Beautiful Mess. He does all this really cool stuff using a delay effect on it, and it sounds amazing.
Another great one is "Puedo Escribir" from this album. He goes for an almost funk-sounding thing on that one.
On a side note, I met him once 20 years ago, and he couldn't have been nicer. I met their singer, Leigh Nash, too, and the same was true of her.
SO nice!
Isn't this a catchy song?
such a pleasant song....good one
It is, isn't it? Thanks.
Great cover dude. Well done.
+mdotn9 Thanks.
Too fun!
nice! I have always liked the song but I am embarrassed to say I never really noticed the bass until I saw your vid. thanks!!!
+John Jackson Thanks.
Very nice, Troy. Not usually my cup of tea, but it's a catchy little tune that gets stuck in my head. I never knew that they were American, I guess the Sixpence name made me assume.
Excellent
Thanks a lot.
Bravissimo!
Grazie!
Wow very nice bass cover
Thanks a lot!
nice tone, good playing, cool masks
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it. Most of the masks are from Death Studios.
上手く言えないけど、0:39辺りからベースの出番が来て弾き始める感じが素敵です😍✨
あなたはそれを十分に言った。 低音が入ったときに気に入ってくれてうれしいです。ありがとう、気をつけて!
I know it’s real poppy and people in the rock scene probably didn’t like it but everything about it is really good. Great musicianship, killer melody, the guitars sound great, the bass is solid, the drums have soul. Definitely overplayed back in the day but there’s a reason it was
I always liked it myself and I'm glad you do as well.
nailed it
Thanks, Richard
I have to say was surprised to see you cover this song. I am actually a fan of Sixpence None the Richer and J.J. Plasencio has some amazing bass lines on their 2nd and 3rd albums. One of my favorite bass lines of all time is from the song "Love, Salvation and the Fear of Death" from Sixpence's second album and the song "Puedo Escribir" from the same album as "Kiss Me" has a really good bass line to it as well.
+Steve Maturo If you look back through my "Other Bass Covers" playlist, you'll see quite a few odd, pop songs that I really like. I'm more of a song person as opposed to a band person so I'll gravitate to things I might have heard on the radio. I'll check out some of the other songs you mentioned.
Coincidentally, I just recommended both of these songs to him without even having seen this comment!
Nice!
+Duane Smith Thanks.
Nice !!!
+Jaguaribehelio Thanks.
Very accurate👍👍
I try. Thank you.
I'm Bass player, good performance you're great Bass player!
Thank you so much, Sandro!
Pretty cool Mrs!!!!
No doubt.
I like the dah dah dah movement. I don't know what it is called but I like it. :-)
I'm glad you liked it Marvine.
Eai Brazil Here !!!!! Excellent work, excellent tone, the sound of those bass guitar are always incredible, do you use any pedal ???
Fucking beautiful, man!
Thanks a lot.
Perfect as always, awesome! :) I've a question: how you record your entire bass line? I mean: it's all recorded by the camera or you use something else? Thank you so much :)
+Francesco Bignardi Thanks. This might answer the question better than I could do here.

Another great job, T. Thanks for posting this. I will have to put on headphones and really listen to the original tune. Until you mentioned the use of two-note chords, my old ears simply never picked them out. I like the song a lot, and I've listened to it many times, but two-note chords? Sorry, missed them. If you can be bothered covering Love Song, by Sara Bareilles, I'd love to hear it off your Guild from "Heart of the Sunrise". I think that bass would clack and buzz nicely on that tune, which invites fretted drags down from the notes. Best/:)
idol thanks i got this and hotel california...thanks for sharing...
Thank you, I'm very glad that you found them helpful. "Hotel California" is about to get blocked... again, but I'll try and get it back up as quickly as I can.
Another I would have overlooked:) Actually a very nice bass line:) Great choice...who would of thunk? :)
NOT so much in the Geddy style...he'd love the bass though! This type of playing fits my style perfectly: root/five and in the pentatonic box. You just can't lose! No one can say anything about it. It just fits so uniformly within the song. Love it...
Me ayudas a sacar muchas canciones, tienes un toque fino!
Muchas gracias. Me alegra que encuentres los videos útiles.
I'm not first : /
Great job
+Blue Eyed I won't hold that against you. Thank you.
Good afternoon.
You could play Mrs. Robinson with the score?
Thank you very much.
What pickups do you have in that bass? Sounds good!
+Michael Osztertag They are DiMarzio DP126's. I chose these because they have adjustable pole pieces and I'm a stickler for balanced string output.
Absolutely crazy technically correct as always, as is all your covers...if I may please ask, if you have a moment, could you please give advise as to how I could improve my you tube vids...I would soooo value and appreciate any input you would give...thanks Dave
+diamond dave Thanks. I'll try to take a look but I'm not very big on handing out advice.
+diamond dave I just browsed a couple of you videos and think they sound fine. My own personal critique would be that I'm not a big fan of the "floating neck" camera angle that you (and many other players) use. I like prefer to see both hands in action. Some people use the "headless player" angle in order to get both hands into the frame but, given the choice between my crotch or my face, I chose, what I thought to be, the lesser of two evils.
Thanks so very much....I'm looking at getting an HD camera in the near future that'll solve that very problem....much thanks!
I can't tell if your a professional Bassist or a professional makeup artist for a living.
I hope you do both :)
+FrustratedNameSearch I do neither. I play the bass and collect masks and horror related items purely for my own enjoyment.
+TJH3113 Really astounded. Bassists in general are hard to come by, ones with your talent even more so. You could literally walk into a gig and easily blow everyone away. Are you saying you've never played professionally? Have you ever performed in public outside of these videos?
Eargasm
haha
Please make More Metal 🤘 Bass Covers
+V8-Challenger I'm really not into metal all that much.
+TJH3113 and what about Rock
Who's the band?
+Blacksmith Channel Sorry about that. Thanks for letting me know I'd left that information out. The band is Sixpence None The Richer.
+Blacksmith Channel Sixpence none the Richer
Gibt es Noten oder Tabs dafür?
Es tut mir leid, aber es gibt keine Registerkarten. Ich spiele nach Gehör und Erinnerung. Wenn ich Tabs hätte, wären Sie herzlich willkommen.
Thanks for this. Love it. Why would you leave the mistake at 2:19 in? Do a second take man!
It was my pleasure. I had to check what to see what happened at 2:19. While my fingering was a bit clumsy (I fretted the first note with my index finger and the second note with my middle), I wouldn't necessarily consider it a mistake.
@@TJH3113 a measured response to an unecessarily hostile post!
Love that song. Great job. You must get lots of requests for songs, so I'll add mine. I've subscribed, so if you do it, I should be notified. Grand Funk - Closer to Home. And if you really want to have some fun, Parliament - Flashlight. : )
Me too! Thanks. I'll check your suggestion out. Thanks for making them.
going pop 8{
+David Dale Christian pop.
amff" so good bass cover"plenty of bassGuitar..
I feel really weird to see you play that kind of music. Sorry, I'm accustomed to see you play ROCK i mean real rock not alternative rock. but was great!!
+novarce I understand. Thanks.
Your interior is hideous, it makes me want to run away... too bad, because the bass is good.
You should see the basement. DeathStudios.
