- Happy Birthday to Roger Waters who was born on this date in 1943.
First off, I have to give a big thanks to everyone who bought me a coffee. It's a bit overwhelming and I'm feeling a touch embarrassed by it. I'm really at a loss for words, but I'll come up with something.
This is a bit different. A few years back I was considering giving playing out one last go. It was going to be a live 3 piece (bass, guitar, and drums), and we were going to use backing tracks to supplement our instruments. It never got off the ground, but this was one we were working on. I don't remember if this was going to be for a demo or what. I recorded my track and submitted it and figured I do a video. Neil Sabino is playing the drums. He tends to play WAY behind the beat and you can hear me struggle with that a couple of times (I took extra time when recording my track to get it right). Harry Crowe is singing and playing all the guitars and I'm playing along to the bass-less track here. I think he (Harry) did some keyboard work, but the balance of what you hear (sound effects, keyboards, women's and children's voices...) are from Karaoke tracks.
For some reason, I missed the Pink Floyd boat. I just never got into them though I've always been surrounded by people who were passionate about them. The songs are "Time" which was on the "Dark Side of the Moon" album which came out in 1973 and "Another Brick in the Wall" off of "The Wall" album which came out in 1979. Both featured Roger Waters on bass.
I'm playing the Guild B-302-A through a SansAmp Bass Driver.
My dad was the reason i started playing bass and PF were one of his favourite bands. We had wish you were here at his funeral. We weren't very close the last few years of his life but he was and always will be my hero. Lost him a year ago today, so was nice to see this. Thanks for the unintentional memory boost Troy. Love you dad, wherever you are.
Danny
Wow, I’m terribly sorry for your loss. But thank you for sharing this memory with us. Take care Danny and be well.
Roger Waters is under appreciated as a bass player. His lines are melodic and creative. He is not afraid to leave space between notes, avoiding the pitfall of being overly busy. Nice tribute Troy. Enjoy your coffees.
yea but some say Gilmour played most of stuff on the records :O
@@ColdToiletSeats deff Animal's which sucked to find out ."Pig's 3" damn good lines..
@@smilingwolf8196 I don't doubt Water's talent for music but everyone in the band played a part in the success. Just too bad Water's is not a nice person.
@@ColdToiletSeats I dont think that is true. I could be wrong. Ive seen the doc's, heard the stories, maybe he is a controll freak with megalomania, maybe he's a stone cold prick. I hope not. All that sadness from his childhood could certainly do it to someone. I saw him cry playing "Wish you were here" on the tour when Sid Barret died. The whole band wore black an he sat alone on a stool playing acoustic guitar alone 5' from me.
There wasnt a dry eye in the house.. Maybe, i hope not.
@@smilingwolf8196 he once told Richard Wright what do you do for the band?.. shit like that is the reason they went on without him
Love the improv beginning @6 min!!
Thanks!
PF's pieces on bass are at the same time "simple" and brilliant. I ain't a bass player, but I managed to play Money in thr stand for a friend that could not be there in the day. Of course it was not easy, specially for me, but I did not have to train that much the tabs, only timing and rhythm, and people absolutely liked the song with me playing the bass. Another friend, a very talented multi-instrumentist, played Time way better than I could think I could.
Thanks for sharing your experience Augusto.
Oh Ho........WELL DONE Troy! Really Cool. Thanks Man.
Thank you Ron!
Love to hear the BASS!
Me too!
It's impressive that you are this prolific on UA-cam yet still find the time to terrorize me.
It’s all about setting your priority levels correctly.
Love the big finale!
Thanks for sticking around that long! Take care!
I think when I really started noticing Pink Floyd was when the Dark Side of the Moon came out,. I couldn’t get the album but my cousin had it and some kiss albums as well,.. loved Floyd since,.. love to hear you play them,..
Thanks again Cindy!
Oh yeah,.. love’n this
Thanks Cindy
Yesssss! Killed it as always
Thank you very much!
Hey Troy, Glad to see the Guild(s) upfront again. Perfect outing for the 302 and a session that resonates with everyone I'm sure. Thanks for doing this. You channel is a deservedly well thumbed bookmark for so many.
Thanks 👍
If I never play (and sing) Comfortably Numb again that will be just fine. Great job as always.
Ha ha! Thanks David!
El bajo suena celestial. ¡Mil gracias por tomarse el tiempo!
¡Me alegra que te guste! ¡Gracias!
Another Brick in the Wall,...one of the snazziest "disco" tunes of that era. Well done.
Good point!
Браво и спасибо за такую работу!!! Наилучшие пожелания и творческих успехов!!!
Большое спасибо за просмотр и уделенное время для комментариев. Заботиться!
i was hoping for this video since twit(ter) informed me this a.m. that it's Roger's b.day
not disappointed, esp. with the jam at the end
👍 👍
Thank you!
That was AWESOME.
Pink Floyd is my #1.
Thank you very much.
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
Nice one troy!
Thank you, Chris!
That bass solo at the end...WOOF! :-) You done got da funk, good sir.
Yeah, I don’t know what came over me. Thanks a lot Thomas!
As always, and excellent rendition; loved seeing how the bass outlines the chords. Kudos to Harry on the guitar, too!
Thanks Martin! Yeah, Harry did a great job on the guitars and the vocals as well.
Nice choice, ive seen Roger Water's front row 3 times and he definitly plays that black "P". I know Gilmore wrote n played "Animal's" but Roger is the man! You got some nice tone going on. You dont need a "Fedora" it's all in the hand's lol..sounding good! Good luck on the job hunt. It sucks but you have the right attitude an your only the new kid at school for a week or so . You'll see someone wearin a Sabbath or Rush shirt an the rest takes care of it self. Keep pluckin' , l'll keep learning what i can an doin my best at the rest! All the best Troy!
Very cool. And thanks so much Chris!
Grande final show. 👌👌👌
Ha ha… I’m not sure what possessed me there. Thanks!
Been looking forward to this all day!!Woo hoo!!
Hope you liked it!
AAAAAAHHH!!! Loved the ending of another Brick!! Soooo satisfying. Amazing that some of it sounded like a bit of slapping. I almost fell over lol.
Thanks Tiny! I knew I was never going to learn how to slap so I came up with my own interpretation of it.
@@TJH3113 It's really cool and very unique.
Thanks, always like Floyd work. I'm sitting back and watching this video with Tom. Wicked!!! Thanks for this/ Double pleasure. ;-)
Thank you Marvine, I’m glad you liked it!🙂
What a beautiful job of yours… I've been watching your videos for many years and I was thrilled when you interviewed your Mother! God bless you!
Thank you so very much for your continued support. Take care!
Bravo Troy! Really enjoyed this one ☝🏻
Thanks a lot Drew, I appreciate it!
Man...that's one hella' boat to have missed, I'm sorry you never got to take that voyage. I know Waters was never the flashiest of players, but he sure builds a darn solid foundation. Pulse was the first album that got me into Floyd...(Waters was a little more seasoned by then and you can tell by slightly more complex bass lines varying from the originals) then I got all the rest. Nice riffing there at the end.
Forgot to mention the great work by your other mates. I thought you were playing over the original for about 30 sec. or so. Everything was spot on.
Yeah, it was just a timing thing. Probably just a bit too young for it, same goes for the Beatles.
Thanks, it might’ve been a pretty cool situation, but it never got past the planning stage. Probably for the best.
Awesome like always Troy!!
Thanks so much!
СПАСИБО ВАМ БОЛЬШОЕ..ВИДЕТЬ В ЖИВУЮ БАСОВУЮ ПАРТИЮ...
Спасибо за просмотр и за то, что нашли время прокомментировать!
Troy. You are absolutely amazing. I love that Guild, i was looking for one, but in my search a Gibson Ripper got in the way. But next time....
Anyway...i just wanted to remind you that, you are AWESOME!!!!!!! That’s all. Thank you Fonzy
Thanks Tommy! I won’t hold it against you, I’ve had my eye on a couple of Rippers, but man, are they expensive.
I love Floyd,
Cool.
Perfect tone and playing Troy. It's always a pleasure to watch and listen to you. I don't come on UA-cam that much, but I should check out your channel more often since you don't post on FB.
Oh.. and those 2 or 3 idiots that always have to put a dislike on your amazing videos didn't get to this one yet.😅 Who the hell are those people?!?!?!
Thanks so much Julie!
I definitely know who one of them is (that forger/artist guy I told you about). I’m not sure about the other two.
Perfect tone Troy, like many others i remember listening to this with the headphones on as a kid and dreaming.
Thank you Roy.
Good 👍
From Thailand 🇹🇭
Thank you very much! Cheers from New Windsor New York!
Waited for this! Didnt get into floyd until after they broke it in 95. Your cover of Young Lust is awesome. the best!
Thanks for your patience! Take care!
This is a awesome bass cover I like pink floyd a fantastic band since the 1960s
Thanks a lot Amin!
Great bass playing 🤘!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks Troy for another great video I love your style/sound/attack, it's clear and crisp because you play very well. I enjoy listening
Thank you very much Richard. I’m very glad you liked it. Take care!
Com certeza uma das maiores bandas de todos os tempos 👏👏belissimo timbre desse bass parabens
Estou feliz que você gostou. Obrigado!
I want one of guilds so bad
There’s one on reverb now for a great price.
Good evening Troy! Fantastic playing as usual and my man that tone is absolute monster!
Hi Johny! Thanks so much!
Did I think Another Brick in the Wall pt II *needed* a bass solo before today? No. Do I now think it should have a ghost note-ridden funk jam at the end, courtesy of Mr Hughes? Yes. Absolutely.
😂🤣😂
I never really got into Pink Floyd either, but I’ve always heard a lot of good things about them. I have heard some songs off The Wall, but that’s really it. I do also like Roger Waters’ solo work. Great job with this cover, Troy. Love the Guild bass.
They always seem just a little too trippy for me and I will never understand how they are considered a Prog band. Thanks a lot Nick and take care!
@@TJH3113 Same here. They’re more Psychedelic than they are Prog.
......even better with your outro.
Ha ha… Thanks.
This is amazing Troy, just added to my lessons list! Thanks for all your hard work!
Thanks so much. That’s awesome! Take care.
I like that bit of jamming towards the end. Someone mentioned a "Jaco" sound, and it does sound as if you rolled off the bottom some... just being extremely critical here. Nice job as always! Took me years to get into Pink Floyd and even so I think there are only 3 albums I really enjoy, can't seem to get into their earlier stuff.
Thanks. I don't think it sounds "Jaco-ish" at all, but I won't argue with anyone's perceptions. I actually don't record with much bottom end, since it's already there on the original recordings that I'm playing along with. It I had a lot of low end, I'd overpower the mix.
What can possibly beat a Guild B301 ?
Guild B302 sniffs and looks askance ....
GUILD POWER \m/
This bass has since transitioned into a 301.
Great playing Troy. Would like to see you bring out that lovely red Ibanez Roadster again. Best wishes.
Thanks Stuart! Yes, I’m sure the Ibanez will be making an appearance at some point in the future. Probably, first in my collection videos.
I've always enjoyed PF but I'd never played any until we tackled Time a few years ago. I had a lot of fun playing that song and as a bonus, I was able to sing which isn't always the case. I enjoyed your noodling at the end. Thanks for posting this.
Very cool! I have a very difficult time singing and playing. Take care! And thanks.
Righteous!!! Bested Roger Waters in my opinion. The jam at the end is perfect. Amazing!
I wouldn’t say that, but thanks Emelia!
Awesome Covers man
Thank you very much.
❤️
Thanks Cindy
This is awesome, great songs. Floyd are 3rd in my top 5 favourite bands, behind AC/DC at number 2 and of course, RUSH at number 1.
Thanks Daniel! That’s a pretty diverse collection of groups there. Take care!
I’m gonna stay out of the band war. But, top 5 bands are Rush, Genesis, Yes, Toto and Tears For Fears. I’ve been recently also getting into a lot of Saga. For some reason I never payed attention to them and now I know I should’ve.
Love your bass, Troy. This medley also shows how much more integral David Gilmour’s guitar is to PF’s sound than is Roger Waters’ bass.
Thanks lady!
You write well. I just noticed you have some pretty interesting comments in the video description.
Thanks.
Sounds like a good jaco tone I never realized how similar the tones where
Me neither! Thanks.
Sorry but not even close. Jaco played fretless and right before the bridge…plus on a fender.
@@WhiskerWhippers yep I know what he played I was just compairing the sounds😁
Yea, sounds like the drummers late. You are spot on though!
Ha ha… Behind the beat is one thing, but he is something else. Thanks!
Love this, a lot don’t like Rodger cause of the the falling out between him and David but I still like him, this was a awesome birthday tribute to Rodger ,. You will always be the best to me Troy 🤘
I never paid too much attention to their drama. Thanks Cindy!
As you might be aware david gilmour played a lot of floyd basslines, Although not the ones your playing here, I presume your playing along to cover versions for copyright reasons, By the way great bit of funk at the end, I like it.
I have heard that, but I'm not a big Floyd fanatic, so I'm not sure of exactly who played what on what song. I used the demo track we recorded because it didn't have any bass on it and I thought it would be interesting. If not for that, I probably wouldn't have done either song. Thanks!
Impeccable tone! Mind if I ask what your signal flow is? Love the punch and definition here, which I struggle to get sometimes. Thanks!
Thank you Nate. All my EQ comes from one SansAmp pedal or another. This was probably a Bass-Driver version one or two. Are use garage band to generate my sound but the only thing I use on that is a bit of preset compression and I use the same template on every video I do.
@@TJH3113 awesome, thank you for the response! Do you often use 2 sansamps in tandem with one another? I have the GEDYYZ pedal and also some rack mountable sansamp units, never thought to use them both but could be cool!
@@natekalnitzbass9446 No problem. No, only 1 box at a time. Any more than that would get confusing for me.
I like the Mahogany one behind him better.
That happens to be my favorite.
Fantastic!!! Will you be playing out again? I hope so and best of luck if you do! Man that tone is so spot on!
Thank you! No, I very highly doubt it. That was a momentary lapse of reason, no pun intended… Ha ha.
@@TJH3113 😂
Hit like before you even played the first note….love ya stuff…🐵
I would caution against that, but thanks for the vote of confidence. Take care!
Did u do a cover of aeroplane by red hot chili peppers?? If not, id be glad to see u do it 👊
No, I do not, but I’ll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion Mike.
Pink Floyd #1
Hope you liked it
Dude lol , what year izzat Gorgeous Blonde in your hands ?? Dam She has some Wicked Tone , Bro. Possible to find one out there w in a local musicians $$ ?? 🤞😁
Thanks Rocky, I’m glad you like it. It is a Guild B - 302.
Great as always Troy. I love Floyd, but always focused on Roger's composition, histrionic singing and movie alike ar arrangements, plus Guilmour's solos. The bass was for me always in the back with a great solid sound but not virtuoso. Am I wrong and he is also a superb Bass player.
Try listening to The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. Superb Waters solo record
Thanks! They always came off as a little too trippy for me, but I do like Gilmore as a guitar player and really liked his “About Face” solo album.
Love Pink Floyd - thanks. Question: Do you play 6 string guitar for fun, relaxation or song writing?
I’m glad you liked it, thanks. No, I started out on bass and it’s the only instrument I play.
Beautiful job as always. What brand is that bass?
Thank you! It’s a Guild B-302.
do some more Yes covers
I’ll look around for something.
Whats this bass solo stuff ?
I know, right?
what version is this?
It’s a home recording of guys I was playing with at the time.
I'm always amused when people appear to take sides in the Gilmour / Waters "battle". The fact is that Pink Floyd would not have been the amazing band they were without either of them. Sure, after Waters left the remaining members were able to continue without him. But look at what they produced... "Division Bell"? It doesn't hold a candle to the Waters-era stuff. I'm sure Roger Waters is a control freak, just as I'm sure that Gilmour and Wright (and particularly) Mason were lazy and uninterested in contributing to the band in the late 70's.
Yeah, I don’t have a horse in that race, so I’ll stay out of it.
But good bass playing anyways
Thanks
Your bass sounds to tinney compared to The recording on the record. I love the bass tone on the record
I never try to tailor the sound of my bass to the music I’m playing with. I just don’t have the skills to do it.
beautifully done and sick ass bass😎
Thanks Dylan🤘
