  • The fabled sea passage to India was now a highway. The Indian Ocean was a massive free trade zone. Upon its waters the trade in spice brought in immense wealth to anyone willing to brave the dangers, the currents, and the politics. The Portuguese now burst into the scene like a storm and were determined to disrupt everything

I have Portuguese ancestors, but I am from the United States. When I was a child, my father would talk about the Portuguese with pride and admiration, going in depth about the discoveries of Portugal and how they changed the history of the world. My father passed when I was 12, but I always had a fascination of my ancestors and their feats. Your videos go so in depth of the specifics, and I thank you for your research and efforts in making these documentaries.

I'm Puerto Rican, but me grandfather on Dad's side was also Portuguese, from Oporto. I also grew up on legends of Portuguese greatness, seamanship and ultimate betrayal by the Spanish, who clipped Portugals empire in favor of their own after the unification of the crowns in the 1580s, embedding the Portuguese to fight Spains losing wars against its former ally, England. It broke Portugals Empire and spirit.... Funny though, my Grandma from Mom's side is of Norwegian descent, and I grew up hearing from her Norwegian sea legends, from Snori, the first European born in the Americas (Greenland), the voyages of Eric the Red... The Norse, another of Europe's great discoverers and sea people. ✌️

What amazes most about the way the Portuguese built their empire is that it was carefully planned and executed. It wasn't like Columbus' harebrained plan of sailing West and see what happens. Columbus got lucky ; the Portuguese gathered decade upon decade of knowledge until they got the prize.

I'm a catholic ( Syro- Malabar Eastern Catholic) which used to be nestorians mentioned in the video. It really is great to watch this video sitting from my home in Calicut.
An interesting fact; the kingdoms in Kerala ( state which includes Calicut, Cochin,Kannoor and Kollam) used to have a matrilineal dynasty. More specifically, the heir to the throne is always the king's sister's son, ie, his nephew. Hence the reason the nephew's of kings keep popping in the video.

This is truly valuable stuff, I hope it gest translated to Portuguese (of Portugal hopefully) so not only the kids, but every Portuguese in general can learn our history, in a less "glorified" way, because truth be told, there's almost as much to be proud of as there is to be ashamed of. Post reconquista spain and portugal esentially had unmatched military prowess that took down hordes of local warriors from inca and aztek to indian and other warrior classes. Yes the naval power was big but look at the few hundred troops beating tens of thousands and what that setup. If portugal couldnt have an on land base they never could have continued on to asia and maintained their dominance. Unreal in the face of all the advantages hat local warriors had.

I don't know if you are English (I think so). Aren't you proud of your country's history, with all its mistakes, that is, of what you are today?!!! We wouldn't live today in a world where we all know each other, in a technologically advanced world that managed to put a man on the moon. Portugal would not invest a fortune in ships, science, weapons, men, to arrive in India and have the Indians say, lol "we don't sell you anything or you have to pay double what the Muslims pay". This is the reality of life.
Slavery is condemnable, but the man of today is not the man of the 16th century. Slavery did not end because men became nice. It ended due to the industrial revolution, in which machines produced more and became cheaper. The slaves were given freedom and a kick in the ass.
      Let's not be innocent.
