I find that the best teachers are usually not educators, but people who do what they do out of passion rather than a paycheck. Of course you can have both, but people usually keep the job long after the passion for it is gone unfortunately..
Thank you! Not enough significance has been given to Portugal and Spain in the history of the holy wars. Most people have heard of the Hundred Years War but nobody talks about the 700 year Reconquista. Keep up the good work!
mostly because Black legend spread by the english and dutch, also the reconquista wasnt a 700 year period of war, its period was more precisely from the fall of the visigothic kingdom up to the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba, with the Almoravids in the middle ending with the battle of navas de tolosa, after that the only thing left was Granada which was a vassal state of Castilla
It took the Romans 200 years after the fall of Hannibal and Carthage to conquer and subdue the tribes in Iberia and Romanize the region. (except for the North) yet we hardly hear about that either. It's always Romans vs Gaul, Germania and Britannia.
It is good to see history but still these people seem to strategically pick our history apart with every channel, show, movie or commentary on our histories. Lots of personal bias and the typical English propaganda bs that runs rampant here of trying to always criticize our histories every step of the way. It is cutting lots of accuracy out and time to dedicate to valuable historical facts and events to know about and more leaving a dehumanizing distaste. N.duero river valley is not an "arid wasteland" hahaha... some parts might have some arid stuff in it, but it is not actually truly what he described. We like these documentaries because we do not see much else, we got to research and truly make our own.
If you had made this 20 years ago I would not have had to read 40 books on this for my master's degree in history. You put it together better than I've ever would have been able to. Kudos my friend!

If I properly recall, the Vietnamese alphabet is based on the Portuguese alphabet, due to the work of Portuguese Jesuits some 400 years ago or so. Is that why there is a "nh" in Ho Chi Minh?

Thank you for putting together this video, myself born in Portugal i am proud to see how our people took back our lands from the moors,Viva Portugal and Viva Espana
You have a fascinating history. The people that I've met from Portugal are so proud of their history! We have a bunch of them here in San Francisco. Plus you also have a golden gate bridge as well!
Though the Moors were invaders (so too were the Visigoths earlier) you must remember that much of Spanish and Portuguese culture derives from their period in the Iberian Peninsula.
I don't understand taking pride in being decendant from people that killed other people 1000 years ago. If I was Portugese, I'd take pride in our contributions to navigation/exploration, trade, and our beautiful cities.
Very happy to find this; the Reconquista was a major part of my independent college experience for me. I've had to learn Spanish in school since I was 5 but I never liked it until I linked linguistics to geography, culture, and history. I taught myself Portuguese too and recognized the Reconquista as the birth of the modern world; had it not been for the Reconquista our world today would not exist. It was not Spain, but Portugal, that began it all, but Spain truly brought the world together. I became very happy to realize that the linguistic origin of my name is not Italian, though I ethnically am, but it is either Portuguese or Spanish. I belong to this culture, these world-creators!
Good for you! Happy to see your interest in Philology and etymology: my pursuit of history has now led me down into philosophy and theology. Stay strong :)

It's unfortunate that the Byzantines weren't able to renconquer Asia Minor from the Turks in 1453. The Spaniards and Portuguese were able to recapture Iberian Peninsula.
Spectacular story telling. Not only do we get to watch a high quality documentary, but It allows one to feel what it is was like in medieval Spain with castles, hand-to-hand combat, political family alliances, inept leaders and inspiring figures. The music and graphics place us in that time. Congrats to those you worked with to create such worthwhile content.
As the Spaniard adage goes "Spain is Asturias and the rest is conquered Land." This is the reason why even the modern day Spanish royalty enshrines itself with tittles such as the Prince or Princess of Asturias. As someone of heavy Asturian blood, from the geographical backwater that it is, where mountains that once had ore and were hydraulically mined to the ground millennia ago, this video does some justice.
It was the last stronghold and from that small enclave the rest was retaken . . . in time. I've read sources where the later kings and queens of Navarre / Castile / Aragon / Portugal would trace their lineage and legitimacy not just to Asturias but to the Visigoth. In fact, it was this justification that lead to the attempted conquest of North Africa, which was once in Visigoth possession
@@FlashPointHx the north of Africa was roman posession, and it was part of Roman Hispania. In the point of muslim invasion, still there was a sort of Latin alive in North Africa.
Bilbo Hob, there were Mauro-Roman Kingdoms (Romanized Amazighs) in all of modern day maghreb. But i don’t remember the Visigoths having a territory in North Africa
WOW, its high time someone has made a youtube video on the reconquista! definitely one of my favorite historical topics and up until now there hasn't really been a clear timeline laid out in a video. Well. Isabella Queen of Castille didn´t conquested Granada. It was Isabella Queen of Castille and his husband Ferdinand King of the Crown of Aragon. The conquest ended on the same year when king Ferdinand financed most of the adventure of Colombus.
The battle of Tours and Poitiers WAS important....! The muslims had already conquered a big part of southwestern France.... It was actually high time to intervene.... To call the importance of that battle "over hiped" is just a wokist view that will be overcome much, much faster than the reconquista of spain has taken...

Really happy that you liked it! The research aspect was extensive! Yes, there plenty of smaller details and battles / anecdotes that ended up on the cutting room floor. But for me it’s important to keep the flow of narrative moving. I saw your other comment - good to have you onboard!
How do you pick topics for videos? I have an idea for a video/series that doesn't seem covered in the current spread of youtube animated history channels, based around steppe riders throughout history from the spread of technology and religion across the steppe, the creation of the spoked wheel, trade with great bronze age empires, through to the Scythians, Huns, Mongols, Turks and the empires and cultural centres they created like Sassarkand. The great pasture of the Steppe made it the greatest invasion route for nomadic people's right up to the gunpowder age, toppled many empires and if we look back far enough to the domestication of the horse, possibly the first use of stirrups. The Kurgans that still stretch from the Donbass valley in Ukraine to the borders of China fascinate me. Anyway maybe something interesting to piece together.
I pick items that are a bit out of my comfort zone. The current video you are watching is Episode 9 - if you go back to Epi 1, I explained bit more about where I came up with the concept of this video series. This was supposed to be about the Aztec and Cortez - But I ended up starting the story with the rise of Islam.

The Reconquista was a pivotal chapter in medieval history, spanning over 700 years of conflict and cultural transformation in the Iberian Peninsula. This documentary brilliantly showcases the key moments, battles, and figures that shaped the Christian kingdoms' quest to reclaim lands from Muslim rule. A fascinating deep dive into one of the most important and complex periods of European history!
Ah, the Reconquista: a “pivotal chapter” in medieval history-because who doesn’t love a good 700-year-long game of tug-of-war? This documentary must really know how to spice up that conflict and cultural transformation. I mean, nothing screams “complex history” like a glorified highlight reel of key moments, battles, and figures. Forget nuance; let’s just slap some epic music over a montage of knights and castles and call it a day! And really, how refreshing to see the Christian kingdoms’ “quest to reclaim lands” framed like they were on a heroic treasure hunt! It’s not like there were centuries of political intrigue, backstabbing, and, oh I don’t know, a whole lot of bloodshed involved. But who needs those pesky details when you can have an inspiring soundtrack and some dramatic reenactments, right? This deep dive into the Reconquista is basically a history class for those who skipped the reading and just want the SparkNotes version. It’s like a history buffet where they serve only the highlights, leaving out the messy bits. So, grab your popcorn, folks, and prepare to be dazzled by the “most important” chapter that conveniently overlooks all the chaos, complexity, and contradictions! What a ride!

Stay in your land buddy. You're not Portuguese.
I'm Portuguese and my wife is Vietnamese! Best thing that I ever did was marry her.
If I properly recall, the Vietnamese alphabet is based on the Portuguese alphabet, due to the work of Portuguese Jesuits some 400 years ago or so. Is that why there is a "nh" in Ho Chi Minh?
@@roddeazevedo The modern day Vietnamese alphabet is the work of a Portuguese monk with assistance from his Vietnamese aids. Yes, that is correct.

Good point @paul lewis

Spectacular story telling. Really happy you liked my video! Hope you watch the next three chapters as well.
There s a few covinient errors and distorted truths ...
Unfortunately they don’t seem to have titles like « Duque de Cantabria » or « Baron de Navarra »
Or maybe im mistaken, could you tell me?
Bilbo Hob, there were Mauro-Roman Kingdoms (Romanized Amazighs) in all of modern day maghreb. But i don’t remember the Visigoths having a territory in North Africa
Lol it crazy how the descendents of the Germanic tribes still think they are the rightful successors to the Roman empire!

That "Yasss!" at 43:20 really caught me off guard. I almost choked. Hilarious! 😆😆
Another amazing video. 👌
Glad you enjoyed!

I’m so happy you liked my content! I try to make history accessible for all and try to balance details with flow of narrative
My favorite part: Part V, Portugal and Afonso Henriques! But I need to go back before the foundation of Portugal to understand more of the common background of Portugal and Spain.
Thank you so much for this video! If you could do special about Portugal I would very much appreciate ❣🙏😊
Thanks for sharing!

Excellent job! Very good! Congratulations!
Thank you !!
Peter Jackson, I think we've found your next epic project.
I think he is more into Anglo propaganda...
@Anglo Saxon91 there is no interest in US for the spanish fundations of their History. They try to aboid It and making movies were spaniards are not horrible men
@GNnisa orobo I dunno, I think Christmas movies do decently well
I love the subtle humour! A ship of the second crusade sailing by saying: Guess this crusade gonna be as good as the last one 😂.
Great work. Looking forward to the next episode about Atilla. Thank you for all your effort.
hahaha - just had to add that in. Take a look at my recent Battle of Tours (Poitiers) - I put in all sorts of Easter eggs
Very well produced. Entertaining and educational. Thank you for the mind expansion
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff
Wow! Just blown away how this video was produced. Thank you.
You're so welcome! happy that you liked it !
