This has got to be one of the best documentaries about the Eastern Roman Empire, with great quotations. Thank you for your work!
Thank you!
The title of the video should have been different.
Beautifully made. As a history major you've done an impeccable job. Ignore the clowns who say your pronunciation is bad. It's good. They're nitpicking based on accent.
Thank you so much for this awesome comment. No worries - I'm used to those that complain of pronunciation - its all relative.
Best 2 hrs 22 min 56 sec I have ever spend on UA-cam.👏
Time flies when you are having fun.⌚😎👍

Your narration is just excellent, your voice is very clear and so relaxing to hear.
Thank you! 😊

A great series indeed! I come from Bulgaria and I realized long ago that in order to understand the Bulgarian history one has to know the Byzantine history.
Very true - they are intertwined
I'd love to go metal detecting there. there is much yet to be discovered under the soil of Bulgaria that goes WAY back in time. Good Luck to Bulgaria and you too Valentin.👍

Fantastic. A knowledge of history equips one for the future. I was such a naughty boy at school but good as gold and eager to learn in history classes. Same shit , different ages. The desire to plunder and rule never ends.
A lot happened between 600A.D. & 1200A.D. Really enjoyed this documentary. I didn’t know as much about this period as I thought I did.
Absolutely amazing very detailed and enjoyable to listen to keep up the good work delighted with this.
appreciation on the long hours you put on This beautiful and incredible work 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This was such an awesome comment - thank you!
Amazing. Scholarly, intelligent, coherent, and artistically beautiful. NOBODY else is doing work like this. Now I'm going to have to spend months watching everything you've done.
Thank you for the awesome comment - happy you liked the video so much. Let me know what you think of the rest =)
You ever cup a fart and smell your hand?
Absolutely incredible explanations, with effectively punctuating visuals. Soothing quiet background music and clear, non annoying voice over. This channel is a unicorn!
Wow, thanks! Sounds like you got a lot out of this - never been called a unicorn before =)

Every time I read or see vid of Burning of Alexandria and fall or Constantinople it makes my heart cry.
They were both a setback for humanity
@@FlashPointHx When Constantinople was conquered it was already a ghost of its best times. Decreased considerably in population and wealth. After the conquest ottomans did their best to render prosperous the city, they built numerous palaces, public buildings, mosques, gardens and others. Anyone can visit the city and see by their own eyes. This is such an unobjective comment.
As requested, I put the first five parts into one video! I enhanced the music, the narrative, and tweaked the transitions a bit. All said and done - It's 2 and a half hours long. Enjoy and remember to share on social media! Part 6 should be out by the end of the month. I've added time breaks to the description - if anyone wants me to add more time breaks or to edit them let me know.

The only people up there with FPH is like maybe fall of civilizations. Gotta give Pete Kelly a shout with History time. Kings and Generals up there too. I love you guys. ❤ amazing work 👏
I like this type of explanation of history and the context. Reminds me of a book I have on the Thrity Years War where for many of the states/kingdoms involved they went back to around the 1300-1400s to give the reader a better historical context of what was actually occurring.
Thanks! Yeah context is everything
@@FlashPointHx It is, but you STILL refer to it as the "Byzantine Empire" even though you clearly confuse people by stating it is the eastern Roman Empire; after the fall of the west, it was STILL the Roman Empire. The fact you'd pander to a Germanic Scribe from hundreds of years after the fall of Constantinople is just laziness on your part.
@@FlashPointHx You shouldn't be commended for teaching bad information to people; you're part of that problem that you so desperately seek to correct. Or at least you SHOULD be looking to do that.
@@JavaBum Really like your avatar - Always wanted to learn how to make a leaf like that
@@FlashPointHx Thanks. This is a picture I took off of the net, but to do it, you need to make sure you pour slowly so the crema can stay at the top, then you slowly wiggle your hand to get the foam to create a cone, in a sense. At the very end, you kinda snap your wrist up to draw a line through the foam, and that creates the leaf.
Hey you your work is fantastic. I have listened to many history channels but yours is special and how you storytell!

@@FlashPointHx im.always into movies that have history and epic battles in them regarding the crusade do you think that the movie kingdom of heaven does justice to document sticking to actual events on the war... ??
Regarding the civil war the only movie that pops in my head is denzel.washington movie "glory" was brilliant epic war historic movie
@@terryfauzifan9459 Kingdom of heaven is based on truth - which means a lot of it is made up. But I like it because Ridley Scott put a considerable amount of time into it and made history accessible for a wider audience. Plus he portrayed both sides with good and bad characters - there was a sense of balance. At least IMHO. As for the America Civil War - I was never much of a fan until I read the Shaara series - its historical fiction, but that trilogy blew my mind. Ever since I've loved Civil War history

Wow thank you!
@@FlashPointHx I've recently developed a great thirst for history and have been looking for good resources on general world history for a while, you're documentary is perfect on every level.
The narrative and voice is great, the regions and borders shown on the map helps to get a picture of where the events took place in comparison to modern boarders, the sequence of events are very clear, and the details especially the battles and campaigns are just fascinating.
Other documentaries are somewhat vague and unclear, they skip important details that will leave you hanging. And some even seem a bit biased.

Wow great work 🙌 ive never seen such a detailed documantary on byzantine on youtube . Sidenote : i know in future videos georgian kindom will come up but during fall of selkuk empire biggest battles were fought in caucasus like didgori in 1121 and i like to see that contrast as byzantine empire deminishes its power , georgia becames most powerfull christian kingdom and even establishes trabizond empire later on . I also like too see more on saladin and his relattionship towards christian realms . Brilliant work cant wait for next one 🙏
It was very hard to cover that aspect of it without destroying the narrative. I was covering more the Komnenian Restoration and the build up to the 2nd Crusade. Sadly with a history that covers from 600 - 1453 a lot ended up on the cutting room floor.

Thank you kindly!
Stunning. Absolutely Gorgeous. This is one of the best (and unfortunately fully detailed) documentaries on Byzantium out there (also your editing with transitions and graphics and overlays is excellent). I am curious if you have ever thought about expanding on this (yes, even longer) and doing a just-as-detailed history on all of the Byzantine Empire (It is so hard to find anything comprehensive out there). I recently started the History of Byzantium podcast by Robin Pierson which is excellent and thorough - was seeing a companion documentary done by you with multi-video documentaries on each of the dynasties to rule over the Empire (maybe he would even want to partner up as he has already done so much research!). Also would love to see an in-depth muti-doc series on other "forgotten realms" like the Seljuk Empire that would puzzle piece very nicely in to this documentary (eg. realms you never can find good info or documentaries on). Your touch is needed!
Happy that you liked this so much - I actually reached out to Rob Pierson when I was doing the Manzikert video on twitter. He's a nice guy and really helpful. Thats an intriguing idea to do a series on UA-cam based on his content. I wonder if he'd be up for that. For what its worth - I've already completed several other videos in this series. I'm hoping to have a compilation video on parts 6-13 out in late Feb.

As an Arab I feel truly sorry for Heraclius, had he died before the Islamic invasion his star might've outshined the star of Justinian for his incredible victory against the Sassanids and also for restoring the True Cross. Shame that his legacy had to end where our rise took place...
Yet also at the same time as an Egyptian I disdain him for his persecution of my people, he's one of the few historical characters for whom I have conflicting feelings :)
Thats an interesting way to look at it. From one end he was a true ruler of his people that reversed the Persian War for the benefit of the Eastern Empire. However, it was an empire and the Greek had no love of the Coptics for sure
@@FlashPointHx Excuse me for my rudeness, I forgot to mention how astonishing your work is. Absolutely masterpiece!!
I'm one of your old fans and subscribers but I rarely comment, thank you for your incredible efforts in teaching history :)
@@FlashPointHx Fun fact if you're interested: There's a chapter in the Quran called "Al-Room" which means 'The Romans'. In this chapter it was prophesied that the Romans (who seemed to be marching towards their demise) would defeat the Sassanids. I initially didn't understand the importance of this prophecy as it's natural that wars don't have a clear winner at first so it's up to prediction. But after I watched your documentary I was shocked by the true severity of the situation for the Byzantines. From a hindsight they were surely going to lose. Ironically, had they lost, the Quran's validity (and thus Islam's) would've been seriously damaged...
That's why I like Heraclius and his daring campaigns which bought Byzantium another 8 centuries of life!!
@@deeipomar2366 How can that be a prophecy? By the time the Quran was written (7th century), the Roman empire was well`n truly "demised", by about 2-3 centuries. Unless it specifically refers to the Byzantium empire, then it would be interesting, but it doesnt. Seems this book is good in predicting the past.
I have the same for Salladin.

i think if i ever went back in time and saw the cities of Carthage, Rome, Constantinople or Babylon, the first thing i would do is fall to my knees and cry at the knowledge that all the splendor im seeing will eventually burn and be laid to waste.
They say only 1% of the knowledge survived
@@FlashPointHx but how much do we think has been rediscovered I wonder?
Meaning, how much have we relearned that is
@@alexanderrahl7034 I doubt that will ever be known - but every time a civilization was brought down and its cities torched a considerable amount of information had to have been lost.
@@alexanderrahl7034 re-learning takes time. imagine how far we could have been technologically, had we cherished the old wisdom of Alexandria and even Baghdad. knowledge should be nurtured, matured, and used responsibly. imagine if the byzantines(apologies for those that are offended by the term) never cared to safeguard the classical works of greeks and romans. the Renaissance would have been delayed even more. and not just technological improvements, but also much of the old history that we barely manage to piece together through archeology. so little we know of our own past, and perhaps much of it was in Alexandria at the time. people forget, thus we write books for future generations to easily learn what it took us a lifetime to know. otherwise, we'd still be in the bronze age i think

I think at around 1:51:00 you meant Robert Guiscard: he was the Norman leader who drove the Byzantines out of Italy in 1071, initiated the Balkan campaign against Byzantium, beating them at Dyrrachium, but had to leave the area to put down rebellions back in Italy. He left his son Bohemond in overall command of the army in the Balkans.
Robert Guisgard started this - but it was Bohemond that continued the attack and his army would later be repulsed

@@FlashPointHx I agree 100%. The Angelos dynasty was probably the worst in the 1000 years long history of the "Byzantine" empire. Their actions and antagonism actually lead to the barbaric sack of the greatest city on earth at the time, by the westerners.
The last Constantine was a leader material, but unfortunately lived when the empire was a shadow of its former-self and couldn't have really changed its fortunes.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city. But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears no traitor; he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their garments, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared."
