Is it mistake or you know the ottoman's governer of Algeria was supporting Sultan abdulmalik with his army ?
You said crusader army but who called for the crusade which pope or wasn't it.maroko and Algeria committed one of the biggest crime against humanity for almost 9 centuries they enslaved millions of people from Spain France and Italy up until the 8th century millions suffers so the campaign was not a crusade but self defence. The fact that morocco didn't fall to foreign rule between early 16th and 15th century is astonishing, that period knew civil wars and turmoils, and complete unstability.
that could be related to patriotism , there is many stories of resistance against the portuguese and attempts of a reverse reconquista so the peoples were behind one goal that is to kick the iberians out .
this battle is scene as the moroccan revenge of the defeat of las navas de tolosa and it had almost same effect. it helped the morrocans virtually kick the iberian presence leaving them entrenched in enclaves that kept falling one after another. until only 2 remained
@@LauftFafa Very interesting. How long until the 2 enclaves are also reclaimed? 😊

morocco and spain are allied now and they are both organising the 2030 worldcup so waging war over 2 rocks isnt really productive for either side
It's also because Morocco was between the two biggest superpowers of the time. The king of Morocco at the time (the son of Mohammed Al Sheikh, Al Mansur) knew he couldn't get too close to the Ottomans and not too distant from Castille. So he made it so he can count on one side defending him if the other attacked. Very skillful diplomacy
@@amogusenjoyer in EU4 morocco have a modifier that allow it to have a diplomatic advantage because historically the nation was too flexible diplomatically and thats how it guaranteed its independence and own sphere in the grand sahara and sahel
I learned about this historic battle when I got curious about how and why Portugal was absorbed by Spain at one point and proceeded to do some research. It led me all the way to this battle, which decisively weakened the royal family and the country of Portugal, triggering succession crisis and civil wars, and ultimately allowing Spain the golden opportunity to exploit the situation and take over Portugal. On the other hand the battle strengthened the Moroccan Saadi regime which then began its, albeit brief, ascent to regional power status. Thanks a lot for bringing this pivotal battle to attention. This battle deserves to be much better known.
morocco will stay a regional power till the 1700s , the strongest moroccan monarch was moulay ismail ( also have Guinness world record for most kids) in his Era morocco's army was around 300k strong 150k of them were regulars following the janissary model and in that period morocco would fight spain and the ottomans successfully . that sultan even did parade once over 40.000 european war captives many of them later joined his christian guard .
in his reign morocco became an attraction point to the european Renegades who didnt want to serve the ottomans but still wanted to serve a strong monarch .
i believe the city of el sawira in his time period had over 10.000 danish renegades or maybe it was a different coastal city. so yeah the golden age technically should last until the 1720s then they will get a 3rd one around 1770s to 1800 (reason morocco was confident enough to be first to recognize the Usa and be also first to technically declare war on usa before the barbary wars and impose a protection tax on their ships that the americans accepted to pay after losing some 2 or 3 ships . a deal that will stay in vigor )
during the napoleonic era morocco will feel intimidated by the strength of france and this will force the country to become isolated and protective instead of seeking allies and keeping technological improvements and try to be up to date like the ottomans did .
in general its a respectable history probably the longest and most glorious of all existing arab countries today.
this battle basically put an end to the powerful House of Avis monarchy of Portugal , essentially starting the gradual decline of their global maritime empire. but this was inevitable, as the Portuguese monarchs at that time were obsessed with crusading against Islam. successfully managing and defending a global maritime empire while simultaneously committing to a 350 year protracted holy war in North Africa eventually put too much of strain on their small population. but you gotta tip your hat to them. what they accomplished in 2 centuries forever changed the course of human history, as they pioneered the age of discovery and modern day globalization. being the first Westerners many different cultures across the globe had ever encountered, spreading their language, DNA, culture and legacy across all of planet earth. for a nation of only 1 million souls at that time, it's nothing short of extraordinary.
At the end the kings of Spain and Portugal wants to join the two countries.. in deep the infant of Portugal Miguel was the one to take the 4 crowns of the Spanish kingdoms (Portugal, Castilla, Aragon and Navarra). But he died we he was a Child. In this case the house of Avis will unified Spain and Portugal under a Portuguese house in stead of hasburg house.

Also Sebastian: I don’t do supply lines!
"Scouting and supply lines are for the weak!"
"We charge headstrong into enemy forces blindly without reinforcements! For that is what a true fearless man does!"
Sebastian was too young and didn't have a father neither a grandpa for most of his life. As such, he didn't get the knowledge passed by more experienced people that ruled Portugal. Sebastian didn't listen to his advisors and took this harsh decision. He didn't even consider how valuable his own life was to Portugal since he was too young, he had no sons and there wasn't close lineages that could hold the kingdom for long. As such the kingdom ended up falling into the hands of Felipe who was the closest related to Sebastião. This was really an unfortunate event. I would even say this incident marked the downfall of the kingdom of Portugal, all because Sebastião didn't know much.

I’ve never heard about this battle, but the moment I heard the trope “the flower of (insert nation) nobility” I knew who was going to win.
I do wonder why every crusader battle seems to end the same way. Heavy knights charge out, get cut off, and then the entire army gets destroyed.
This is in 1578, the printing press was already common in Europe, do these nobles never read history?
@@jenniferkeates
I suspect by this time the commoners were starting to question the point of a knight, if it was ineffective on the battlefield. The knights probably were too eager to prove their worth.
@@jenniferkeates well it's usually because there's a surplus of said knights, and only so much land that can be split between nobles sons... so they start coping by dreaming of getting what they deserve

The battle of Alcácer-Quibir was a devastating moment in Portugal's history, but it had significant consequences. The victory of Felipe II of Spain allowed him to become king of Portugal, beginning the period of Iberian union. With the Iberian union, the Treaty of Tordesillas was annulled, which made Brazil's territorial expansion possible.
and in morroco's side this last had a momentum after this battle they pushed against the ottomans then they went south to colonize mali who became a moroccan Pashalek sometimes under direct control sometimes as a vasal until the french will arrive in the 19th century .
today's Azawads issue can have its routes traced to this some of them even still see the kings of morocco as the spiritual leaders of northern mali

Morocco is an ancient country and has a style of religiosity that makes it unified and does not disintegrate. Some of the people’s faults are that they are weak in development, but when there is a rational leadership, it witnesses miracles, and for this reason Europe is afraid of the Moroccan renaissance. Morocco is not an ordinary country that cannot be defeated easily because it is a nation with a unique specificity.

Morocco was an empire that ruled several countries, including Spain and Portugal, and our monuments are still visible to this day...
It was not the Moroccans who conquered and governed Andalusia, it was the Umayyad Arabs with their Berber troops coming from all over Berberia, not just Morocco. To the Arabs were added the Zirids, a Berber dynasty from Algeria who founded the first Muslim kingdom of Granada in 1003 after the implosion of the caliphate of Cordoba.
The Almoravids who succeeded them came from what is now Mauritania with burnt faces.

Just years before, Morocco has stopped the Ottoman expansion in North Africa, and years after Morocco conquered the Songai empire and controlled west Africa.
The Ottomans captured Morocco twice(1554,1576) and installed their own vassal rulers on the throne. Morocco did not win any wars against the Ottomans and therefore did not hinder its expansion.

There were also Ottoman janissary soldiers and a small number of Turks in this war. Most likely, these janissaries were the soldiers with rifles. Because the main weapon of the Janissaries was the rifle (arquebus)
This is correct!
No they weren't go away roach
not all but yes . moroccans though did have their own as shown later when morocco and ottomans will go to war and when morocco invaded and colonized the saharan and subsaharan regions of mali and niger few years later .
moroccans though have a doctrine of horse gunners and it date since the Marinid dynasty and its still celebrated today in the fantasia / Tbourida events that is a kind of sport where each group of each team have to run a certain distance then do a war cry and fire at synch when the order is given.
the style , the formation , the timing all attribute to the final score . it was added to intangible heritage of unesco

The tragic thing about King Sebastian is that he had been a good king before this dumb disastrous campaign. He reformed thr army to match the Spanish tercios, built hospitals for the poor, made some good reforms and genuinely cared about the well being of the average person . There was genuine hope that he would save Portugal's future, sadly he had also been raised by Jesuit priests who put bad ideas about crusading in his head and doomed him and his nation. Even though Portugal reclaimed its independence part of the country's soul died in Alcacer Quibir never to be recovered.

Bruh why did Sebastian send in his absolute best units without any support at the very beginning of the battle. He literally had a defensive square that he could have held out with and then once the Moroccan army was committed send in the shock knights/infantry to break them. He played that card so damn fast

How would x conqueror aproach this battle?
Hannibal: Strech the line and hide troops in plain sight if necessary, elite cavalry ambush when all troops are commited, kills everyone.
Alexander: Strech the line and overload one of the flanks, pikes hold center while companions racks in the kills, enemy leader manages to escape.
Caesar: Strech the line, cavalry is used to tie down enemy cav, infantry charge, the 10th easily wins their engagement and carry the day. Enemy surrender.
I can see Caesar sending a part of his force to block off the enemy supply route, digging in, engaging in some random skirmishes and then eventually accepting the enemy’s surrender here without a real battle. That becomes more likely considering the Portuguese had a large army within Moroccan territory with no long-term ability to sustain themselves.
You left out Obi-Wan Kenobi: Occupy high ground. Game over.
