I really love the thickness of these blanks! When I make my coasters, I really do prefer them thick as these! This was a very informative video! I really love how your mould turned out and I think it was a great idea sealing it using plasticine for the bottom. 😊

Thank you for showing how you make these. My husband and I were just talking the other day about making my own molds. You did a great job explaining and showing how to do this. I actually like the blanks with the texture at the start. I think in different colors it would look good. They are simple and casual for every day. Sometimes I think that is what I like the most. edit: This mold looks better than the first one
I loved the texture too.
I would think the texture would be nice to keep coasters from sliding.

The liquid in each container won’t dry as they’re not mixed together. Try acetone & paper towels. Then soap and water. Big job, but I’d be trying to save those containers too. Absolutely loving your resin and silicone videos. Very exciting to see them pop up.

when working with play you have to treat it like dough and work with it for about 5 to 10 minutes sometimes then it becomes very soft you're on the right path I love your videos
If you take the 6 coasters put them in a mold frame then pour a thin layer of epoxy to seal them all together, when dry then pour the silicone over that to make your mold you won't have any edges that have to be clipped off they will be smooth, Hope this helps!

If you run a heat gun or hair dryer over the Plastercine quickly before you press your blank in, it will soften up..
That and the plasticine could probably been a little thicker. But definitely warmer, that's the one thing I've always liked about plasticine, is how soft it gets in your hands when you work with it.

I now use only the fiberglass reinforced silicone mats for anything that heats up. Saved me from sooooo much wasted effort & materials ❤️
Try using candle wax to prepare your blanks for the silicone. Idonno if will work or not. but it does have both properties of hard and soft and is easily reconstituted for many uses.
You don't give up with anything, do you? And you surely got solution that will work beautifully after all.

The plastercene will get softer but needs a lot of kneading like when you make bread dough, great video enjoyed your process,. Kids play dough might be a good alternative but it does go hard if left exposed to the air

I make sculptures out of Sculpey clay. It stays lovely and soft once it’s conditioned, which you can do by kneading or feeding through a pasta machine. It stays soft until it’s baked. I use an acrylic roller to roll it flat. I think it would be perfect for this.

I had a couple of thoughts, as I normally do. What if you found some plastic lids that are slightly larger than you want your geode molds to be and squirted your silicone into them. You could vary the width, or thickness, of the edges away from the plastic lids to make your molds. This way you would keep the sizes of your molds all relatively the same. You could also judge the depth of your molds based upon the height of the plastic lids. You could then lay them inside a single mold like you did today.
For removing bubbles, do you have a tool in the shop that vibrates a fair amount? You could place it on the tabletop so that it vibrates the silicone. This would help bring bubbles to the surface.
Lastly, if you have an exacto knife, you could use it to trim the silicone film away before you remove the blank. This will give you a good pattern to follow, and an excellent edge to your silicone.

Well done Julie, the mold looks really good. You can get awesome silicone stirring sticks from Let's Resin - three in a pack and they just wipe clean with your wipes after use - less bubbles too :)

I just Love ❤️ how you keep trying something till you get it perfect. I think the might interest you I saw Petra using a flower mold by Molds and Shapes that had a coaster stand with it. Have you seen that one? I can see you coming up with a design like that because you are truly creative

a standard canvas works well for covering as well and the 2" ones work really well, especially if you have a bunch in stock they can be Finished or Unfinished
I was thinking a baking sheet would work, too, if you don't mind not seeing them cure.

I'd be wondering if the molds all actually hold the same amount of resin. If one is just a little off in total volume from the others, you won't get the same depth. Wouldn't it be easier to just measure the depth after you've poured?

Polymer clay - sculpey 3 (sculpey III) It's soft unlike plasticine. It doesn't air dry.
But still a great video I’m amazed with your creativity
When I worked in childcare we made our own play dough. 2cups of flour, 1cup of salt, tbs oil, add water whilst mixing to get the consistency you want.
Won't playdo harden?
If left out for a few days it will begin to. But it stayed soft for a while. It will need to be thrown away after a couple weeks though, it is cooking ingredients so it will go bad after some time.
I was going to suggest the same recipe. I wonder if you added Teatree oil if it would make it last longer since it's a natural anti-fungal, and anti-ceptic.
Try using a blow dryer to warm up the plasticine before pressing into it

I actually like that textured side! my husband always complains that my coasters stick to the wet glass and that might actually prevent that.

Thanks Julie. Really enjoying watching the trial and error to get that ‘perfect’ mold. If the ‘blanks’ retained a slight lip on the edge from being a little under filled, would this then grip into the plasticine?

Great job. First, your tray sides are made from corrugated plastic sign board. Second , please be very careful with the cuticle trimmer. If it gets away from you it may well cut into your mold where you do not want it to. Looking forward to seeing your first pour in your new mold. I hope it is exactly what you want. The weighing would work.. except for one problem.. the moulds you made with the silicone caulk are not all the same size.. you would be better off making a single mould with the caulk.. using it to make 6 blanks ( cus then the weighted resin would work as it is the same size every time) then using those blanks to make your main mould.. because some of your caulk moulds are smaller than the others ..so that amount of resin in the smaller moulds will make them thicker than the others
Also the roughy oil slick.. you are burning the resin with the torch.. that’s why it’s discoloured on top like an oil slick or trail and you have a rough bit

So how do you get the bubbles out without a torch?
@@tamaraclapper logn necked lighter cus its a considerably lower temperature than a torch flame.. or a spritx of rubbing alcohol.. if its something deep but relatively small you can use a pressure pot

I know its been a while since you did these video's but if you ever want to do a similar one again with the mold making, you can take the silicone caulk around the bottom edge of the coaster press it against the plasticine to create a seal then clean up the edges around the coasters then you can pour your mold without getting the silicone under the coasters.
