Mega Rayquaza: No boosting ability, weaker than Chi-yu. Dragon Ascent (120BP) is pretty strong but weaker than Chi-yu's Overheat
Mega Medicham: Can't hold an item, weaker than Chi-yu, but only barely. Mega Medicham High Jump Kick is barely weaker than Chi-yu Overheat
Medicham: CAN hold an item, barely stronger than Chi-yu. Medicham Choice Banded High Jump Kick is barely stronger than Chi-yu Overheat
Chien-Pao: Lower Attack (120) than Chi-yu has special attack (135), also weaker attacks

It's a lesser form. Its true form is "A Thousand Hands" or whatever. Also, in a 1v1, Arceus would literally just switch to an immune / resistant type for every single attack anything throws at it.
Kyogre's automatic weather ability was the original STAB Tera 😂 it's power takes an insane jump especially with mystic water but the fact that Chi-Yu is close to that, has better speed, dual STAB, and the ability to still set up Weather or Tera.

The common thread I have seen with the most recent broken pokemon, mainly referencing Zacian, is that self boosting abilities that provide an offensive advantages are broken. Zacian had stupidly high speed with the extra boost to attack. This fish just gets to have the highest spatk stat. On gen3 we had Slaking which had an ability that nerfed him because of the high stats. Now the high stat mons are buffing themselves further.
Gen 3 had soul dew latios. Legendaries have always had crazy stuff, although they're definitely getting even crazier now.
And Regigigas has slow start, so even legendaries (even if just one i think) got abilities that nerfed them
I mean these are legendaries while you can catch slakoth before first gym.

In Gen 18, Groudon holds a niche in ZU as a bulky sun setter, after being replaced in PU by Kamisakana.
Kamisakana ability is World's End, that sets up the new global warming weather effect, that instantly KOs Ice types with BSTs lower than 500, and maximizes the attacking stats of all fire types on the field, this is of course balanced by the fact that Kamisakana has 10 in both it's defenses to balance the 255 in its other stats.
At least we have ultra mega raquaza to check it

Yeah it's really only good as a revenge killer using choice scarf, but at least we dont have to deal with the ou staple uber mega z form dyna zacian, cant believe it gets all its stats maximized when it switches in, but at least it cant superteralize and make all moves 1/4 th damage, because of story reasons
ok but that’s all kinda countered by Ferroterra, whose ability can literally kill anyone who physically attacks it, and with its move Reflect Beam, it can reflect special attacks aswell without damage. This with Rightunders can be deadly, esp in Doubles. Just waiting for it to get to UUbers.

Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham are in the same vein as the mentioned Mega Pokemon, in that they are stronger raw stats-wise, but they're locked to their Mega Stones in the first place.

Today when I played in OU I saw something I dread every time I close my eyes. Someone had brought Chi-Yu. I started sweating as I sat down and gazed over at the Chi-Yu with highly likely a choice item. He had already reinforced his Chi-Yu with sun and was in the process of finding a way to switch it in. I start shaking. I keep telling myself I'm going to be alright and that there's nothing to worry about. He somehow finds a fucking way to switch it in. Tears are running down my cheeks as I send my last texts to my family saying I love them. The Chi-Yu is now there, staring, and starts spamming Flamethrower. The eyes on his Chi-Yu flare to life like a nuclear flash, and rage fills my heart and shakes my very soul. My entire team goes down. My desk begins to shake as I rage. In mere seconds my world has gone from vibrant life, to a dark, earth shattering void where my body is getting torn apart by a Chi-Yu. As my body finally surrenders, I weep, as my ELO go under. I fucking hate Chi-Yu.

A 100 base speed tier makes it strong but not unplayable like Zacian was. A lot of Pokemon can outspeed Chi-Yu if it isn’t using a scarf, and then revenge kill it pretty easily. Still an amazing Pokemon regardless, and probably one of the best overall mons from this generation.

More specifically, they're saying that Chi-yu has to choose between outspeeding certain Pokemon with Scarf and losing some of it's offensive power or having the extra offensive power from Specs but being outsped by Pokemon that are naturally faster than it or use Scarf.
Also, Chi-Yu is easily revenge killed with priority

There was also talk about banning calyrex shadow to ag but it didn't get banned due to being hard walled by dark types in general and yveltal being everywhere

Yeah, Last Respects has been shown to reach 262 million damage dealt in optimal conditions, with an even higher maximum theoretical output.

the fact chi-yu can compete with kyogre or miraidon is mind blowing when you realize rain or electric terrain are already taken in considerarion for those two, but chi-yu wasn't under sun which means its moves can potentially be boosted even further. that mon truly is a beast
I'm surprised there was no mention of mega mawile or mega medicham. They are certainly less viable than chi-yu but with huge power and pure power their attack stats are functionally over 200 base. If I'm not mistaken mega mawile's attack stat is so high that it literally cannot be matched by pure base stats, because they max out at either 254 or 255.
Also mega lucario with adaptability is certainly more powerful with its stabs.
yeah it would be effective base 259.5 if base stats went higher than 255

Garchomp has stayed at least OU for every single gen since its introduction, so Chi-Yu probably will also stay for a while yet, unless they directly nerf it (like Aegislash. RIP ghost sword. Or Gengar. RIP ghost boy).

Since it "only" has base offenses of 180, and its ability is purely defensive/utility, Chi-Yu is naturally stronger even with items included.
Worth noting that this is for Timid Chi-Yu. A Pokemon would need a Special Attack of well over 200 to match Modest.

Currently in Gen 10 Mega Rayquaza is viable in PU as a niche pick to counter primal Groudon and Kyogre.
The Current OU is run by Lashaqabaca and Peepobpeep who have quad typing with wonderguard and 1hit KO moves in blabloomp and Balalala that are guaranteed to hit regardless of evasion/defense after tailwind.
Damn, my fav Pokemon Porygon-Z is really giving that fish a run for its money 🥳
Chi Yu had 145 base spA on launch, only mon ever nerfed like that
All the ruination mons had 10 more bst on launch actually
Ting lu had 10 more hp, 5 more defense and 5 less special attack
Chien pao had 10 more attack

A thing with Dracovish outspeeding is that for many targets, the ones that can outspeed it are usually on the frailer side and will go down to an unboosted Fishious Rend regardless.
It's probably even more dangerous in doubles because Beads of Ruin boosts its teammate's attacks as well, which helps popular spread moves like Expanding Force, Electroweb, Heat Wave, Icy Wind and so on. Regieleki is a stupidly fast transfer Pokémon that's not part of the restricted list that gains even more powerful special attacks when Chi-Yu is on its side, having Tera Ice to punch through resists and Electroweb to help set-up a one-two punch with Chi-Yu.
180 HP / 252 SpA / 76 Spe Timid Eleki outspeeds Scarf Garchomp and is too bulky to be oneshot by most Choice Scarf Pokémon, while also free to hold any item it wants. A boosting item is the most consistent, but you can run Lum Berry to negate Prankster sleep move, Covert Cloak to blank Fake Out or even a Choice Scarf vs Scarf Miraidon (after Chi-Yu's Beads Tera Ice Blast is an OHKO).
If you want a cleaner answer vs Dragons such as the Box Legendaries, you can run Iron Bundle as your other restricted mon which does not need Terastalization to beat them. In fact, it doesn't even need a Choice Scarf vs a Scarf Miraidon because the terrain boosts its speed!
Obviously Chi-Yu is strong, but the math to get 492 is inaccurate. You aren't boosting your own sp attack, you're reducing other pokemons' sp defense, which is entirely different math. If their sp def is lower, that ability has less of an effect, and if it's higher it has more of an effect. It's hard to say if an equal sp def of 369 being reduced by Chi-Yu's ability would even equate to a sp attack stat of 492. It's worth mentioning I think.

Purely off numbers: make shuckle switch its attack and switch a focus band onto it. It’s probably possible to consistently do it in doubles, but it would probably render at least one of your own Pokémon more or less useless
But boosting moves should not be considered. Just as Shuckle can use Power Trick, Chi-Yu can use Nasty Plot and so has Shuckle handily beat after one turn of boosting.

@@epicfail1193 except that it can't. Power Trick swaps raw stats, and leave stat changes to the stat that has been changed. So in this case, Shuckle would end up with a really high attack stat, and a pathetic defense stat that's boosted by one stage.

It's always interesting to hear about things from the singles side of the meta, in doubles I've never struggled against chi yu. They get shut down by rain and sand teams plus their ability lowers their teammate's sp def

That's an effective 235 Base Attack, but its strongest attack is icicle crash who pales in comparison to Fire Blast.

You're honestly being incredibly ignorant of effects on the team if using weather or terrain. Team boosting is an indirect measure of power/strength. Any quark drive pokemon is getting boosted by miraidon, same with swift swim for kyogre as well as chlorophyll/protosynthesis. That being said, it was already obvious that kyogre, groudon, miraidon, koraidon, and other powerful weather/terrain setters were gonna be better.

Played my first game of gen 9 OU. Got 6-0d by tera fire chi yu. Went back to playing gen 8
How about choice band galarian darmanitan? Or ultra necrozma , and urshifu dark wicked blow. These guys are pretty powerful. Xerneas moonblast is an honourable mention

Neuroforce gives a 1.67x boost to Super Effective attacks when used by ultra necrozma. He has 167 base attack and spatk.
Urshifu-Dark's Wicked Blow is a guaranteed critical hit 80 BP dark type stab attack, it's not as strong as chi-yu but it's something widely considered by many who played gen 8 to be an unwallable attack.
Choice band Galarian-Darmanitan with Gorilla tactics gets essentially a 2.25x Attack boost to an already high base 140 attack.
Xerneas' Ability "Fairy Aura" Gives all its fairy moves a 1.33x Multiplier in power
You know what's scary? Chi-Yu was about to have 145 Sp. Atk.
As in that's its stat in version 1.0 of the game just before release. Imagine if Gamefreak had just missed that and decided "eh, next gen" like they always do.
Xerneas, for exemple seems like a much more appropriate candidate than Rampardos, with comparable spatk stat and boosting ability, but with added bulk and one of the most dangerous setup moves in the game in geomancy.
Good old choice locked Kyogre too with better stab in Water Spout, coverage, bulk and team support capabilities.
Plus, Chi-yu's ability being versatile is kinda pointless because it is known to spam stabs anyway...
But still incredibly strong by the OU standards !
The thing with Chi yu is that you an reduce and increase stats, unlike boosted Pokémon that get their power from their Stat raise, meaning a chi ju can have +6 spAtk on top of beads, while porygon or zacian can't, but that's not to be expected. However, the guts scenario isn't that unlike: very often you'll have someone with toxic, or t spikes or will o wisp, and you can predict said switches on ghosts to get burn and earthquake chandelure or chi yu to hell, or Mach punch or bullet
I think you missed 2 mons: Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile due to huge power/Pure energy. The latter has an effective 259 attack stat. Still, Chi-Yu has an effective 319 Special attack with specs, even surpassing Medicham's High Jump Kick with Fire Blast despite the lower base power, although barely.
The strongest reliable special attack is still an specs water sprout from a modest Kyogre.

@@MrAnimeAMVmaker I'm talking about life orb. Life orb Fire Blast is oddly enough weaker than Medicham's HJK due to a lower base power. Even with specs Medicham is just 4.3% weaker... Oh, now that I think about it, regular Medicham hits harder with HJK, 5% stronger in fact.
I don't bring Mawile due to low base power moves, the only reason that thing never got banned in gen 7 btw.
The one Pokemon i can think of that rivals it's sheer power is Alolan-Marowak holding a Thick Bone, firing off base 110+ Stabs such as Flare Blitz and Poltergeist.
Marowak would be stronger than Chi yu if it wasn’t item locked, but it is, in fact because of the item lock it’s not even as strong as deoxy-A or Mega Ray
This is the first generation where it wasn't a power creep it was a power jump. I think the ruin pokemon and certain paradox pokemon would be at home in ubers, but I don't know if they'll find their way there since we're just using other gen 9 pokemon to counter them, and pushed 70% of older pokemon out of OU.
You didn't mention Regieleki with it's ability transistor, choice specs rising voltage in electric terrain which has the potential of doing more damage than Chi-Yu, despite it's special attack stat isn't as high

Tbh I think there is one thing that should also be noted, this stat drop also helps your allies, just having Chi-Yu on your side of the field effectively boosts your ally's SpAtk by 1.33x aswell, for example Regidrago which has 100 SpAtk has the same effective Dmg output (though with +SpAtk Nature unlike ChiYu) when using a Dragon type move as Chi-Yu but having both out means Regidrago now effectively has an insane 656 SpAtk before accounting for items but with the downside that your ally Pokemon also takes 1.33x more dmg. I think this is an even more potent boon of Beads of Ruin, being able to not only buff itself but its allies always.
The craziest thing about all of this is the fact that this Chi-Yu is nerfed! In the day one patch of the game, some Pokemon got and lost moves and some got some stat changes. All the ruin Pokemon had 10 points removed from their BSTs. Chi-Yu got -10 for SpAtk. Yes, Chi-Yu had 145 SPECIAL ATTACK BACK THEN INSTEAD OF 135
I think rather than stating if Chi-Yu is the strongest Pokemon, it's better to state that Chi-Yu is the strongest Pokemon unconditionally. Like you stated, something like Banded Guts Conkeldurr or Banded Fishious Rend Dracovish can be stronger, but the scenarios where that's happening are too inconsistent to really rely on.
And in that regard, I'd say that Miraidon is overall stronger. Electric is a really good offensive type, and many of the Pokemon who can somewhat reliably take Electro Drift probably don't want to be eating a Draco Meteor.
I think why he stated Chi-Yu is probably stronger than Miraidon is because electric attacks are walled by ground, and in order for Miraidon to reach specs chi-yu’s power it also needs choice specs. So while Miraidon can be completely walled if locked into Electro drift, Chi-yu is still hitting resists for absurd amounts of damage with just fire blast.

I think it’s my favorite new Pokémon. It’s supposed to represent ENVY AND RUINATION INCARNATE. A small, timid-looking, goofy-googly-eye-gold/koi fish would not be what I would have envisioned. The brokenness only adds to the hilarity and seems fitting.
Isnt chien pao the physical equivalent of Chi yu ? With its ability and moves like Crunch or Icicle Crash, it reaches same damage output as a Chi yu flamethrower
chi yu has a higher special attack then chien paos physical attack
Special attackers are all around better than physicall attackers so Chien-pao isn't as oppressive as Chi-yu is.
Also fire dark is better offensively than ice dark

dondozo walls chien pao blissey can't even wall chi yu plus 100 speed is usually good enough to outspeed most non-scarfed pokemon speed above 100 is nice but not necessary plus chi yu can take hits from special attacks fine just get rid of the physical attackers and chi yu is basically unstoppable

I’ve been using chi-yu to great effect in the ace tournament with an amulet count. Spamming dark pulse always guarantees the knock out. Only Dendra’s hariyama, and penny’s umbreon and sylveon give it trouble and even then there both 2 hit ko

The fact this thing isnt in ubers when its dealing MORE damage than some of the hardest hitters in that tier is absolutely criminal. Chi-yu is the reason i quit competetive for this generation, hoping smogon gets their shit together and bans it.
I still think that Zacian is a better Pokémon, especially if Chi-Yu ends up in Ubers…

I think that they should unban fluttermane, palafaker, and delibird, because it starts to become a game of the next man down. If we ban chi yu, for sure chien pao is next. I think it should be a full threats meta as oppose to a limited threats meta.

The issue with Chi-Yu is that its speed is its only drawback, esp in a game where speed is king. Zacian was overpowered not just because of its elevated attack, but also its insane speed stats. Chi-Yu has a good selection of counters, such as the 3 Gen 9 starters, each of whom can pretty easily take its hits head on, but also popular pokemon such as Iron treads, Maushold, Dragonite can do the same due to their faster speed stats. Of course, choice scarfing Chi-Yu is an option but that's a whole other can of worms to be exploited. I can't think of that many Zacian counters in Gen 9.

Chi-Yu is even capable of beating BLISSEY 1 on 1, since it can just Nasty Plot in its face while the blob can only seismic toss, and will get obliterated. It's absurd that a pure special attacker can manage that.
Healing moves also got nerfed and Blissy also lost access to a lot of good moves this gen too so Blissey is probably at it's weakest it's been in many gens.
I think that Chi-Yu's main weakness is its defensive bulk. A lot of these other mons getting mentioned don't get OHKO by random dudes like breloom. I'm not sold on Chi-Yu being considered as one of the strongest of all time. Don't get me wrong, I think all of the legendarys, roaring moon, iron valiant etc. should just get quickbanned to ubers.
