Always a fan of the backstory around Mr Friendly, always made Gabe look like a stand up guy who didnt belittle someone for a weird (although very inspired) idea.
@@MailMainbutnotIt is absolutely inspired from a mechanical perspective, but the reality of Mr. Friendly's "combat" is so bizarre that it almost breaks immersion. It might've taken the player out of the game and made them think, "What's wrong with the guy who came up with this?" Not that you *can't* put this in a game. It's just that most may see it as a little beyond the pale, even when compared to the rest of Half-Life's horrors. Edit: Not to mention the technical limitations at the time, lol

However, I do suspect that some of these entities were then repurposed by Gearbox when they did Blue Shift and Opposing Force, such as the Kingpin as an example you can make the argument that this entity was repurposed into the Voltigore which also has psychic attacks and even has a psychic death attack for its adult variant, same for the Charger entity as it could have been repurposed into the Pit Drone.
The robot grunt wasn't meant to fight alongside the normal grunts, they were meant to be like a replacement of the grunts for a "german" mode that was in HL1 beta. Barney, scientist, zombie and hassault also had german version but were scrapped, they acted just like a reskin. Don't forget the Chub Toad! It was a blue toad that was later replaced by the Snark. You would throw it to distract enemies. In Blue Shift, if you gather all of the ammo possible before the Resonance Cascade and open fire on the box in Barney's locker, there's a Chub Toad inside.
Fun fact: a lot of the cut NPC’s can be found in the PAK file (WON release). Additionally, a lot of the NPC’s had animations and after decompiling had action tags (code that assigns animations to behavioral scripts) that still functions in half life, excluding the lack of ai of course
You forgot the chumtoad :O The cute purple snark wanna be that you threw down and it would distract enemies by hoping along and croaking lol Cutest thing valve ever made. Azure Sheep used it as it's mascot. Also, though it might not be directly said the Geneworm in Op Force bares a HEAVY resemblance to the first quiver enemy. It has the same sort of squid tentacles, it has the same horn coming down its face, an armored back too, it just doesn't have multiple eyes and no legs.
I just cannot help but imagine the entire studio telling Gabe and Ted: "What do we learned today class?" Gabe/Ted: "Not give a horny teenager the chance to design our creatures"
I think sphere looks more like something of combine making, with machine and organic features. In that case I think it would've been like an scout before combine invasion of xen, so a passive npc which hangs around in far places of the xen level
I went and got myself Raising the Bar, which details most of these cut enemies, and is a must read for anyone fascinated with cut content. I hope there is some digital scan floating around. By the way, a simple reason for some enemies being cut could be redundancy, if you end up with 2 different enemies that end up filling relatively similar role. Most that stayed in the game fulfill very different roles and are unique.
I love the kingpin design so much. That concept artwork of him is so cool. I really wish the models they finished made small cameos around Xen. Maybe in areas you can't get to. It seems like such a waste to cut them entirely after being almost fully realized.
at least Dr Coomer technically got a second chance through hlvrai. great video!! it's really fun seeing all these creature designs. the archer almost looks like it would fit Race X more than the Xen aesthetic. i think the floaters Ted Backman designed would have been really cool to see in game, too
The Human Sergeant was most likely not designed by Chuck Jones, but rather Ted Backman, as the style of the concept art matches closer with Ted's than Chuck's. I find the Human Sergeant and the Stukabat to be really interesting, given how much they were shown off, had places where they would be encountered planned or shown, had animations done for them (though most of Hsarge's were on an older model), had sounds made, in the stukabat's case there was even programming nodes for it lefter over in some of the final game's maps, and both were still in the game by E3 1998, meaning they got the axe just a few months before release, the human sergeant also had it's own version for the censored German version according to the SDK, which makes you wonder why they got cut so late in, especially seeing as there doesn't seem to be any reason given by Valve or it's employees, so those 2 really stand out from the others as almost making it into the final game.
Idk why but i like to Imagine that Ivan still exists in Half life Universe He would have been the Fourth Employee with an HEV suit, and would have the Task of Guarding Specimens But after the Resonance cascade, he got Teleported to somewhere far in the Universe and Its now Searching for a way to Go back to earth More like a Headcanon than just an imaginary thing actually
Sven Coop implements a lot of these cut enemies. Stuka bat, Panther Eye, Grunt Sarge, KingPin, Chumtoad (oh hey Lucia u forgot about this one!), and more. I really love this game, damn.
Aw you forgot the little purple frog dude. The chudtoad or chumtoad or something. It was supposed to be another snark like pickup that distracted the enemies. . It's featured prominently in the mod Heart of Evil.
PollyRobo is actually based, specifically off of the Matchbox toy from 1985, made for the Robotech toyline. its got very distinct features that do not align with the actual Anime's mechanical designs. Chances are someone at valve had the matchbox toy and brought it in as refference. Im a huge Half-life fan as well as a Macross fan.
Good video, however you missed one thing: polyrobo wasn't supposed to stress the engine just using skeletal animations, his model also had a shit-ton of polygons. The devs were testing how many polygons they could put on screen without the engine crashing
Some of these guys I knew about, but a lot of them I've never heard of & that's pretty cool. It's a shame that many of these ideas were killed either because of time restraints or being too advanced for 1998, but I can still heavily respect Valve for what they were able to create & their ability to push the limits of gaming.
my own ideas for cut enemies: archer: it will be found swimming in water and if you go inside the water they will start to attack like pirahnas mr friendly (appropriate version): mr friendly will vomit and try to hit you wit its arms but instead of fatal cop it will use fatal paralyzation (to make the game appropriate) by screeching out loud noise making its prey paralyzed and it will slowly swallow the whole prey snapbug: snapbugs will be only found in desert and will attack by jumping on you and will be fast as fast headcrabs robot grunt: robot grunts will be found in desert areas and they will have much more health and will use tau cannon quiver creature 1: they will be found in xen and will attack by charging at you similar to antlion guard quiver creature 2: they will be similar to vortigaunts and will have same attacks poly robo: they will be similar to striders but will shoot laser bullets from red spot charger: they will have same behaviour as normal antlions floaking floater: if the floater is attacked it will shoot electric beam at you human sergeant: will use gatling gun stukabat: will be hanging on ceilings and will sometimes fly towards you panthereye: they will attack just like panthers sphere: will float and can be killed if they are open kingpin: it looks similar to mr friendly but will be only found in race x area
Found out now? I think anyone who remembered OF2's assets knew it, but not until later did I found out that they said that it was made by them (if that claim is even true).
Someone demonstrating the Archer's animations? what a world we live in also; is Mr. Friendly's spit animation original or custom madd? I've seen the attack animation before, but never it spitting
Oh, you mf, nice charger jumpscare. Thanks for detailing alot of these cut NPCs, I didn't think I would actually see more cut NPCs than what I knew already.
I can't imagine the construction workers still being able to do their jobs in the final version of the story. Trying to open the way and keep things from blowing up, sure, but that overlaps a lot with the existing allies. Having them around to do practical/maintenance/repair tasks would basically negate Gordon, since this is what you end up doing for the scientists most of the time. They went ahead and implemented this idea in Opposing Force and you can see how that turned out.
Ive only experienced Half Life Alyx, and the previous titles through vague youtube videos alone, since 2005. I admit i know absolutely nothing about Half Life. But im watching these videos because of the immense impact these games had on the culture as a whole. I am amazed and appalled by the gamer who hasnt experienced Halo CE, and here I am at the altar of another giant without knowing what it means. I hope i can experience it firsthand soon.
I always wondered since Half-Life 2 had such a big Beta could Half-Life 1 also have had one and we just never saw it because it was never leaked? Maybe tons of never before seen levels and monsters were deleted or have been sitting hidden somewhere for all these years
ehhhh, most of Half Life 1 remained pretty similar through most of its lifecycle, what did change was mostly your progression, art style, and what you came across. Arguably that's the same deal with Half Life 2.
If you want to know which alien enemies were designed by Chuck Jones, see if has a red eye, or a 3 eyed motif. Chuck Jones also worked on Duke Nukem 3D. And if you take a look at the Alien Drone and Octobrain in Duke Nukem 3D, you'll realize they look VERY similar to the Xen aliens.
The Sphere was probably what the Controllers started as. If it is the Control Sphere then it makes sense for it to shoot a projectile, it needed to show that it was controlling an npc, and it was probably closed when it wasn't controlling anything
Well done video I think the idea of mr friendly is way too terrifying to be put in the game kingpin design is very interesting tho wonder how it would have sounded by the way are you going to make a video about the mod "paranoia"?
the SnapBug could work more like a Trap enemy type where they stop you moving but look like it's tricky to apply them into the map and make player frustrated probably got Replace by the Barnacle
To activate blood and gibs in the german version of HL1, you have to first activate the parental control setting and then deactivate it. And you have to do that every time you start the game. I think humans still get the same yellow blood and gibs as aliens then, but it's been like 15 years since I played the german version, so YMMV.
I feel like if "mr friendly" was actually implemented it'd probably attack you by knocking you over and then stomping (stabbing) you to death with the dagger feet up front. Ain't no way Gabe would allow "fatal copulation" in half life
I believe the Panthers were inspiration from the Chimera from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , They look pretty similar, but the Chimera has it's own S.T.A.L.K.E.R. flair
Fun fact: I was at a pharmacy in the summer, and the clerks there were dressed like the cut female scientist. No joke, you could tell they only had their underwear beneath the labcoat\ scrubs. It was just so hot that summer. If I remember correctly, the HECU robots also had sprockets and rivets flying out of them when hit, instead of blood. I'm guessing the Control Spheres were not creatures, but rather, creations. Like, they were part of the Nihilant's army, drones that flew around levels like Interloper, monitoring the Vorts and tracking and attacking the player, similar to the eyebots in HL2. Also, for the cut minor scientists, they were not cut, they were just an easter egg. That said, aside from the lockers, some of these "characters" are paged on the Black Mesa intercom system, and you can find the offices of some of them. Most prominently, Dr. Newell's flooded office in Office Complex, and the office of the two scientists - S. Jones and S. Reardon - that are at least partly connected to the development of the Displacer Cannon from Opposing Force. And yes, these are also developers of HL games. Also, also, you're forgetting the semi-cut Chumtoad and Boid creatures. Both were cut from HL but restored in Blue-Shift. The Chumtoad is a small toad-like Xen creature that you can find in Barney's locker, if you destroy the box there (I think it's its own appearance). In older versions of HL it was supposed to run around and distract enemies for you, but did not have a proper attack. I think it was cut because it was seen as redundant, since Snarks mostly fulfill the same role AND attack enemies. The Boid is a flying creature found in Xen that acts as a generic background bird. It flies around in flocks and is pretty much a simple 2D mesh. I think there are actually two types of Boids, but I'm not sure.
Would love to see a mod that implements most of these creatures into the game naturally (aka, feels like vanilla Half Life, but with all these cool cut enemies). Though, that would be an uphill battle as you can't really just replace currently existing enemies with them. The enemy balance is extremely well thought out, and all the enemies appear a perfect amount of times in game. You'd have to create new encounters for them, and then would have to balance those encounters out with more puzzle and parkour sections.... ugggh. That would get out of hand very quickly. Still would be amazing to see. Perhaps if I learn how to mod this game....

my own ideas for cut enemies:
archer: it will be found swimming in water and if you go inside the water they will start to attack like pirahnas
mr friendly (appropriate version): mr friendly will vomit and try to hit you wit its arms but instead of fatal cop it will use fatal paralyzation (to make the game appropriate) by screeching out loud noise making its prey paralyzed and it will slowly swallow the whole prey

robot grunt: robot grunts will be found in desert areas and they will have much more health and will use tau cannon
quiver creature 1: they will be found in xen and will attack by charging at you similar to antlion guard
quiver creature 2: they will be similar to vortigaunts and will have same attacks
poly robo: they will be similar to striders but will shoot laser bullets from red spot
charger: they will have same behaviour as normal antlions
floaking floater: if the floater is attacked it will shoot electric beam at you
human sergeant: will use gatling gun
stukabat: will be hanging on ceilings and will sometimes fly towards you
panthereye: they will attack just like panthers
sphere: will float and can be killed if they are open
kingpin: it looks similar to mr friendly but will be only found in race x area

My dog-walker’s stepbrother’s cousin’s best friend works at Valve and they said that all of these will be revisited in Half-Life 3
Maaaaan the new thumbnail is way better
Well done video I think the idea of mr friendly is way too terrifying to be put in the game kingpin design is very interesting tho wonder how it would have sounded by the way are you going to make a video about the mod "paranoia"?
the SnapBug could work more like a Trap enemy type where they stop you moving but look like it's tricky to apply them into the map and make player frustrated probably got Replace by the Barnacle
5:23 "it still.. hurts.. watching him fade.. away.."
This is literally the first time I've ever seen, or even heard of the charger!!
7:44 OMG Robotech, i can't believe that this media exists outside of my own conversation.
im very glad you started doing youtube. Now you can actually get money from your hard work
0:57 I think the most famous cut enemy of all time is the Flood Juggernaut from Halo 2
The Panthereye could have been redesigned as a sort of "pack alpha" Houndeye just by removing a leg.
Panthereye's kinda look cute
There’s a mod in gmod that did put most of the beta/unused creatures and people (They sadly didn’t include the female scientist)
To activate blood and gibs in the german version of HL1, you have to first activate the parental control setting and then deactivate it.
And you have to do that every time you start the game.
I think humans still get the same yellow blood and gibs as aliens then, but it's been like 15 years since I played the german version, so YMMV.
Audio balance. Do it!
Also, cool video.
People who say Half-Life > People who say Half-Life 1
please make a video talking about a fan made hl2 mod you wish was real like a story and game stuff that you want to be real but not a real mod
All of Ted's designs are really unnerving to me, I do wish they made it to the final version of the game.
5:29 Robotic grunts can be seen as separate enemies in modification Half-life: Expanded Arsenal!)
The Panthereye looks surprisingly adorable-
12:56 nice transition
In that list of Black Mesa employees being named for Valve employees, can’t forget Dr. Newell!
0:21 why does he sound like carmighty here
I feel like if "mr friendly" was actually implemented it'd probably attack you by knocking you over and then stomping (stabbing) you to death with the dagger feet up front. Ain't no way Gabe would allow "fatal copulation" in half life
I believe the Panthers were inspiration from the Chimera from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , They look pretty similar, but the Chimera has it's own S.T.A.L.K.E.R. flair
I have seen tons of videos on cut half-life content but 80% of these enemies are never brought up in those videos, wonder why.
What mod/version of the game you're playing in the background?
It's either Half-Life: MMod or GMod! :P
I did always like the glasses idea.
SKIP: 3:46 (if you wanna)
Would love to see a mod that implements most of these creatures into the game naturally (aka, feels like vanilla Half Life, but with all these cool cut enemies). Though, that would be an uphill battle as you can't really just replace currently existing enemies with them. The enemy balance is extremely well thought out, and all the enemies appear a perfect amount of times in game. You'd have to create new encounters for them, and then would have to balance those encounters out with more puzzle and parkour sections.... ugggh. That would get out of hand very quickly. Still would be amazing to see. Perhaps if I learn how to mod this game....
