Just about to call you out! lol I actually love the fact the origins if his name, there’s an almost mythical status to FBI and high other ranking American officers “suits” “men in black” “g-men” it’s very fun!
You're wrong. It's totally fitting. The reason his name is Gman or The Man in Black is because his design and obscured way of speaking are meant to directly evoke 50s Gmen in black suits covering up UFOs. You're just wrong Lucia. The devs intended for him to be called Gman, they made him look and talk like a government agent so people would in universe of course call him G man. EDIT they probably wanted to call him Spook but that one has two potential meanings and only one of them means Government man.
"somewhat commonly used word back in the day " You mean commonly used word across the western world? Just concede you made a minor mistake, not need to try and shape the narrative like it only makes " a bit unfitting and sounding out of place " No dawg the idea of the G Man, is central to the whole half life theme of coporate industry/shadowy government officials. Yes, just learned that from the comments, added a correction to my pinned comment! My point mostly still stands, just changed it from being lore breaking to just a little out of place (by out of place I don't mean lore or story wise at all, I mean that it simply sounds weird to hear G-Man's name in a Half-Life game. Check my follow up video, every thought or correction you might have is answered in that video)
The term G-man means "Government Man" - it was born from grunts seeing dudes in suits and going "wow, look at that weird civvie, must be an employee of the government - a government man - a G-Man." That's the origin of the term. It only tests credulity because it's in a Half-Life context. EDIT: Saw your correction, it's not out of place at all, only seems so to you because you're familiar with the Half-Life context and not the xfiles-influenced 1990's in which the concept of Half-Life was born, but whatever, think what you will.
Xen in the Source engine is a monstrous task. Nearly every single surface is a displacement and it is extremely time consuming to make natural curves in Source. Even the devs admitted that they used 3d modelling programs like 3dsMax to make the levels rather than in Hammer instead, and it took 6 HOURS to compile some maps. Xen and the Black Mesa facility in terms of level design approach is night and day.
For the flashback soldier dialog, im pretty sure it was taken from the manual of the original opposing force game where it included a diary written by corporal Shepard and they refer to gman as the g-man (meaning government man)
Prospekt So... I originally was actually recruited to help re-write some parts of the project back then. Me and another friend on the project had a whole bunch of unfinished maps & story changes. I too had my own feedback I wanted to impliment and improve the story. The intro would've started with Shephard on a train to Propekt where he's stripped from his vest n uniform. Midway, he's ready to be locked up until suddenly Antlions go lose and sirens start blaring. From all the chaos Shephard was meant to run the chaotic halls and crawl a few vents to find his gear. This way Shephard experiences the fall of Prospekt real-time instead of waking up in the moment. Rich seemed alright having me onboard but eventually came radio silence. Unfortunately, it just seems the project lead grown focus on other things, so all the ideas we pitched in have just been collecting dust. I'd honestly enjoy fixing Prospekt but its unlikely it's getting an update anytime soon.
I thought it's because it's Gabe Newells initial. Gabe man. And he is a way for valve to be a spokesperson in their own game. "The company and I will keep you in stasis until we need you" aka will decide to release a new game
Entropy: Zero and Entropy: Zero 2 are some great mods which have you playing as a combine soldier. while they aren't focused on Shepard, they try to do for hl2 what opfor was for hl1, and i think they succeed quite handily
Are you sure you couldn't use HEV charging stations in OF? I distinctly remember the tutorial yelling at me that a PCV is compatible with HEV chargers.
AND civilian charging ports (...which when you realize the HEV is already on a Mk.IV design by the fall of Black Mesa, and that the PCV shares DNA with the HEV suit, does at least somewhat imply there's probably enough that made their way to market to justify charging stations that work on literal power armor).
It's such a shame this project. Was suppose to get a pretty fucking hefty content update, but that's never seeing the light of day, think the ambition that update had would've absolutely boosted the experience and reputation in a good way. I do occassionly find myself replaying bits of the game, mainly the earlier levels, cause I do find some enjoyment out of them. I just wish this project went further, it's harsh, but I really don't think it deserves the price tag, considering how little it gives (it's really just a mappack, but a decent one). Oh well... project is old now (2016 💀) and not getting more updates from the sounds of it, there's plenty more HL content to look forward to nowadays, we do eat well! 😄
5:21 There is of course a small chance of this, since G-Man is reduction from "Government Man", perhaps one of the soldiers saw him, thought that this was a man from the government, and gave him such a nickname

The PCV was most likely designed by the same people who made the HEV suit. Just the PCV was made for the military. So naturally they were made to use the same batteries.
First off, I just want to say that this is the first video I've seen from you, and you've earned a subscriber. Now, two things I want to point out: 1. I think the soldiers in that one flashback scene call him the G-Man because it's an abbreviation that means "government man," a mistake that anyone seeing the G-Man in a military training facility would make. A mysterious man with a briefcase would be assumed to be from the government at a passing glance. 2. You make it sound like there was no thought put into the PCV/HEV charging in Prospekt. As you probably know, in Op4 the PCV is stated to charge not only from its own power stations, but also consumer and HEV stations. It wouldn't be out of the question to assume that Adrian's PCV has be modified to accept power from Combine stations, but I do agree that directly introducing it would have been better.
I agree on both points. I only found out about the actual term „gman“ after about 30 people commented it lol. I added it to the pinned comment already. Also, thank you for subscribing! :)

Valve did my man Richard Seabrook so dirty by ignoring his application. He's clearly very passionate about what he does. A strike against them in my book tbh.
i understand that the Drill instructor on Opposing force clearly says that the PCV can recharge on military and commercial power stations but c'mon, does the Combine empire still uses the same Duracell AAA+ battery from the 90's? lol
DERP, I completely forgot the title of the video and as soon as you reminded me that prospekt exists I paused the video and purchased it lol I have become the consumer monkey I once mocked.
A thing about the PCV's power justification via flashbacks. It's also stated in the training mission of Opposing Force that the PCV can be charged by dedicated PCV charging stations, as well as civilian and HEV charging stations and batteries. And throughout OpFor, you're using HEV stations/batteries to charge the PCV rather than the PCV station in the training mission, plus, the civilian one is never seen outside of that mission.
Another thing about the teleporters, while the intra-dimensional one is lore breaking, the portal to xen isn't. It's stated that while the Combine are reliant on local transportation, they can travel BETWEEN dimensions just fine, so a portal to Xen is perfectly within their abilities, as Xen is the Border world between dimensions, and where they had chased the Nihlianth and the Vortigaunts to previously before the Resonance Cascade.
That doesn't answer why it can charge from Combine charging stations. Kleiner stated he modified HEV suit to make it able to charge from those. That means PCV should not be able to.
@@HylianKnight02 You literally contradict yourself. Yeah, that's exactly what they can do - travel BETWEEN, and not dimensions but universes. Not somewhere IN between them. Also, If Combine were able to travel to Xen, they would've captured/killed Nihilanth before all that started on Earth. The fact they didn't is because they can't.
16:21 I haven't really played the mod to judge, and if I'm wrong I'd be happy to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure this line of Dr kliener can be heard in the original opposing force game, right after Adrian wakes up.
I‘m unsure, perhaps it is. However it has been redone by the voice actor of kleiner, and there are a few more voice lines done by the voice actor of kleiner in the mod which definitely haven’t been heard before.
Heard they're making a proper Opposing Force sequel, called Through the City, although the nightvision is kinda just a recolor of the flashlight, but weapons from Opfor comes back
G-man is a military term that is shorthand for Government Man, and is why G-man is called G-man as far as I know, because he looks like a government official. Makes alot of sense for G-man to be called that by an HCEU marine. Besides that, good video man!
The Opposing Force manual also included the personal diary of A Shephard where he wrote his thoughts about the training at boot camp, and it included the appearances of that blue suit guy whom he referred to as "a G-man".
iirc, G-Man stands for Government man. I think I've heard people use it in a similar way the word "Spooks" is used. So, them using the word G-man isn't all that surprising.
I found a fan-made opposing force.Its called through the city.i didn’t found I might have seen it I forgot the youtuber’s name but just search “A fan-made opposing force 2”.Also its a mod for half-life 2.
random lore about the G-Man name, Valve confirmed that when they gave him the Gman name they thought of the meaning of gman, as in it's slang for government man, and in that context, it makes sense that he's being called a G-Man or that G-man, and not "The gman", as he seems like any other Government Man (other than the fact that he's the only person who'd fit the description of a Government Man at the Military base, and he is even described as a Government looking man in the opposing force manual "Rumor is he’s from some government branch looking to recruit;" direct quote from page 2 of the Half-Life Opposing Force manual)
There's a lot of wasted potential with this mod, but the circumstances of this becoming a paid mod is perplexing to say the least. It's the exact opposite of the Opposing Force. It's a decent mod, but the continuation of OF it is not, nor something that should have been sold on the market, imho. And I think that did him more harm than good as people critiqued him harshly because of it.
I'm trying to learn to mod HL and HL2, but it's harder than you would think, especially for one person. I can't seem to find any info on how to make custom weapons for HL1, so I'm guessing it's the same with HL2, and level design is hard to make look right even in goldsrc, I will admit, selling it for $5 is kind of a scam for what it is, but I can still appreciate the hustle.
although not as bad as hunt down the freeman... prospekt was very bad too. The fact that the guy didnt get the job explains it, and probably gaben greenlit the mod because the author went to the lengths of sending him a briefcase, meaning it was out of pity.

It's a unfair comparison to black mesa because those guys had access to the source code so they had really no limitations on their creativity and optimization
I remember before this, there was a massive mod being worked on about Shepard in the 7 Hour War around 2012 or 2013, on the scale of Entropy. It fell apart due to misdirection and drama. The HL modding community was saddened by it and was hoping this would fill that void. Man, they were wrong.
Heeey, someone talking about Prospekt! I am tired of explaining it, but now I get to link your fancy video to people who ask me what I am talking about lol
I kind of hope Shephard never comes back. I liked the *Warning: spoiler* ending of Opposing Force, where he's just left in a state of limbo, with the implication that may be there forever... such a depressing conclusion.
I'm pretty sure there are only one or two PCV chargers in opposing force, the rest of the time Adrian just uses the HEV chargers like Gordon Freeman...
HEV chargers are not the same thing as Combine Energy Chargers, which Kleiner specifically told the player he modified the HEV suit so that it can take the combine energy chargers.
Yeah, the mod should have been free considering the amount of great mods to play on like Entropy Zero 1 & 2, Amalgam, Evacuation, Fast Detect, Resistance Element, Arctic Adventure, The Forgotten Ones or Snowdrop Escape on Steam for free.
I know it's a year too late - but you do get a crowbar in HL:OF - I played it recently, few months ago and you did get it, just later in the game - but it's mostly useless because knife is faster and wrench is more powerful (at least it was avaliable in my game - a bug?) Great video :)
I recall in the Opposing Force tutorial level a Drill Sergeant explains that the PCV can be charged at H.E.V stations, Opposing Force treated the PCV like an H.E.V suit really.
my biggest turnoff for Prospekt was the setting. same place and time as Half-Life 2? in hl1 this idea worked because the story was exclusively focused on Black Mesa, but with Half-Life 2 they introduced a whole universe of possibilities, with 20 years of untapped storyline, and a whole world to set this story in, no longer in the confines of a single research facility. restricting Shephard's story to the confines of Nova Prospekt at the time of Half-Life 2 was doing him a disservice. he deserves to be Freeman's equal, not another sidekick, who remains irrelevant to the base storyline like he did in op4. it's especially a gut punch when you take into account that a fully original story was in development for Shep. Opposing Force 2 was to be set in california years before the events of half-life 2, telling a military story of the last US soldiers making a desperate stand against Combine rising to power on Earth, and that would've been amazing
At somewhere around 5:25 "Have you seen that weird G-man?" It's believable because G-man means Government man, someone who looks like they work for the government
Arkane was told to stop the work on Ravenholm DLC and eventually released Dishonored lol, I always thought Dishonored reminded me of Half Life 2, with the strider like enemies, the strange blue tech with odd sharp edges and tall skinny tram/trains - not to mention the plague ridden city with rats everywhere and an oppressive occupying force. Dont get me wrong, its completely its own thing and I believe that its only loosely aesthetically tied to it in an effort to maybe use assets they spent time and money creating. Or it's a complete coincidence and they just happened to be inspired by HL2 subconsciously

8:17 that might be the borealis
All the redditors really crawled out of the woodwork to correct him on the gman part
I'm still proud of the dev for even making a game that valve loved so much they published it.
An Arkane-Valve collab seem like a match mad in heaven.
5:24 legit made me laugh gj man
Heard they're making a proper Opposing Force sequel, called Through the City, although the nightvision is kinda just a recolor of the flashlight, but weapons from Opfor comes back
You should watch this video until the end :)
This mod has pretty much nothing in common with Opposing Force, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not playing it.
Imo feels exactly like hdtf
G-man is a military term that is shorthand for Government Man, and is why G-man is called G-man as far as I know, because he looks like a government official. Makes alot of sense for G-man to be called that by an HCEU marine.
Besides that, good video man!
0:31 cant forget how its exclusive to ps2
I understand writing captions for the video, but I don’t understand forcing me to have them on rather than letting me decide to turn them on.
The soldiers call the g man g man because the name is a shorthand for government man. They probably think he's a CIA spook or something.
G-Man at 9:41.
Wait the beginning of prospekt wasn't bugged and just a annoying unskippable cutscene? What the hell
gman means government agent as in a federal police officer, investigative agent, taxman, central or covert intelligence, surveillance etc
good job bro, i'm really huge fan of opposing force and i liked your video very much.
5:07 g-man is short for any government agent so the hecu probably assumed that he was associated with the government and called him that.
I found out afterwards. I pinned a comment to correct myself already, but thank you :)
@@1lucia oh, i didnt notice that. sorry!
This guy forgetting Black Mesa exists lol
Prospekt was HDTF before HDTF. It even is a continuation of OP4 in a way.
I found a fan-made opposing force.Its called through the city.i didn’t found I might have seen it I forgot the youtuber’s name but just search “A fan-made opposing force 2”.Also its a mod for half-life 2.
its mentioned in my video lol
When upload my comment I search a fan made opposing force 2 then boom found your vid about it not through the city the other one
@@tail8164 Why commenting before watching video
8:19 That is the location where Dr. Judith Mossman found the Borealis (maybe)
random lore about the G-Man name, Valve confirmed that when they gave him the Gman name they thought of the meaning of gman, as in it's slang for government man, and in that context, it makes sense that he's being called a G-Man or that G-man, and not "The gman", as he seems like any other Government Man (other than the fact that he's the only person who'd fit the description of a Government Man at the Military base, and he is even described as a Government looking man in the opposing force manual "Rumor is he’s from some government branch looking to recruit;" direct quote from page 2 of the Half-Life Opposing Force manual)
4:50 why does it sound like markiplier a little bit
In Shephards journal, he refers to g-man as g-man.
08:18 I'm pretty sure this was meant as a nod to the Borealis ship
I like how he cuts right after he enter a room with trip mine
Hmm, the 1st seconds of the video, game footage looks familiar 🤔.
Great video though, amazing job.
although not as bad as hunt down the freeman... prospekt was very bad too. The fact that the guy didnt get the job explains it, and probably gaben greenlit the mod because the author went to the lengths of sending him a briefcase, meaning it was out of pity.

1:05 perfect cut
It's a unfair comparison to black mesa because those guys had access to the source code so they had really no limitations on their creativity and optimization
g-man jumpscare at 10:02 is pretty interesting
I kinda remember buying this game thinking that there will be cut hl2 enemies and crap, but the only thing i got there was the disappointment
13:30.
Great Backhop btw
I'm keeping my eye on Through the City mod.
The Protagonist is also more know to be the Older Brother of Mitchelle Shepard ! The protagonist of the best half-life game , hunt down the freeman !
i hope some day adrian shephard come back to the main story of half life
2:31 Let's not forget the masterpiece that is Black Mesa
01:07 U can't hide this from me!

Until through the city comes out in God knows when, this will have to do it.
There is nothing that matched the absolute BANGER soundtracks that play while playing Opposing Force.
@@1lucia good point
0:25 Wow thanks for that one
Yeah, the mod should have been free considering the amount of great mods to play on like Entropy Zero 1 & 2, Amalgam, Evacuation, Fast Detect, Resistance Element, Arctic Adventure, The Forgotten Ones or Snowdrop Escape on Steam for free.
G-man is just slang. short for government man.
You can call the feds G-men.
woo through the city comes out this year!
I know it's a year too late - but you do get a crowbar in HL:OF - I played it recently, few months ago and you did get it, just later in the game - but it's mostly useless because knife is faster and wrench is more powerful (at least it was avaliable in my game - a bug?) Great video :)
I recall in the Opposing Force tutorial level a Drill Sergeant explains that the PCV can be charged at H.E.V stations, Opposing Force treated the PCV like an H.E.V suit really.
idunno, it doesn't make any sense that the combine empire still uses Duracell AAA Batteries from the 90's instead of something more futuristic
That doesn't answer why PCV in the mod can charge from combine charging stations.
my biggest turnoff for Prospekt was the setting. same place and time as Half-Life 2? in hl1 this idea worked because the story was exclusively focused on Black Mesa, but with Half-Life 2 they introduced a whole universe of possibilities, with 20 years of untapped storyline, and a whole world to set this story in, no longer in the confines of a single research facility. restricting Shephard's story to the confines of Nova Prospekt at the time of Half-Life 2 was doing him a disservice. he deserves to be Freeman's equal, not another sidekick, who remains irrelevant to the base storyline like he did in op4. it's especially a gut punch when you take into account that a fully original story was in development for Shep. Opposing Force 2 was to be set in california years before the events of half-life 2, telling a military story of the last US soldiers making a desperate stand against Combine rising to power on Earth, and that would've been amazing
through the city sucks too, because again, it's set during the events of Half-Life 2. it's just route kanal with a few Opposing Force weapons
@@blueshit199 and what? is Shepard going to die and that's the end of it?
@@Marine_2010 pull of the same thing half-life 2 does, return him into stasis, maybe changing his status from detained to hired this time around
In the new Half life 25th aniversary documentary, we saw that the expansion packs are actually canon
At somewhere around 5:25 "Have you seen that weird G-man?" It's believable because G-man means Government man, someone who looks like they work for the government
I'd have said it 'Hey have you seen that weird guy in the suit walking around? Kinda ghostly looking with grey skin? I can him G-Man for short.'
5:20 Some miliary guys WOULD think to call a suit 'g-man'. Because it means Government Man. Like a men in black.
I think the lack of any "unique" traits for weaponry and the overall gameplay aspect puts a dent into it.
