Also, so cool that you read in Arabic! I still regret not learning how to read Arabic while I was in the UAE (had too many programming languages to learn for my degree). But it is on my bucket list after Japanese hehe. Have been loving using my Kobo for French though, I can save words to a word list and write the translations on the book or in the notebooks. @BinxThinx bless your heart. I absolutely don't get why one would pay 300$ to a problematic company just to get colorful covers. The annotation is cool but it is a bonus anyone who has used ereaders for years have easily lived without.
@BinxThinx well it is my native language so it is the easiest language for me to read. It takes years to be proficient enough in it to read it easily so don't feel bad you didn't get the chance, it is an extremely difficult language (also pretty ancient so you can understand how its cadence/form would be extremely foreign, but at least it is phonetic). I can use french/french and french-english dictionaries on my kindle as well as arabic (but i obviously don't need the arabic one). I speak french too haha (currently reading monte cristo). I am ok with not having the pen because I make sure to rely 100% on my memory to retain words which is how i taught myself english anyway. I find writing the word on it make me put less mental effort so i avoid it as much as possible even if it means looking up the same word multiple times. Not to defend the kindle but my 10th gen paperwhite does have a section where it organizes the words u have previously looked up.

@@Mabel90666 probably if people never buy the physical books, but when it comes to Amazon (should have explained a bit better) I also mean that they compete with physical book sellers in that you can buy physical books online on Amazon at crazy cheap prices that bookstores can’t compete with. Amazon buys physical books in bulk and sells them at a loss (similar to other companies like Big W and KMart here in Australia) because they don’t make profit from the books - they want you to be in the store or use the platform to buy a bunch of other things while you’re there, and the make the profits off the other stuff you buy. Independent bookstores can’t usually compete with those prices because they need a profit to keep going and don’t rely on you buying extra things with the books. As far as I know other ereader companies do not also compete with the physical market in that way. When you have the amazon accounts and get the emails it’s such a big temptation to buy everything from them because it is convenient getting it all dropped off by your door, and I made the decision to cancel all my accounts with them so I can be more mindful and support other companies whose ethics align more with my values. Thank you for asking so I can clarify!
I didn't want to be locked into the Amazon ecosystem. For obvious reasons plus, it's not that great a source of non-english language books. So went with a Linux based brand that is big over here in the non-english speaking part of the world but seems unheard of by the English based side of the internet - Pocketbook. Much Because when I go to my local library and look at getting ebooks, pocketbook is the ereader they recommend and provide directions for. Plus I am an old Linux girlie from way back when. Love it! It's great, so just spreading the gospel for others outside the English speaking world - we have other options than kindle Vs Kobo.
Yikes. Just a stream of ignorance. Did you do any research and Rakuten? How supporting one big corporation is better than supporting another. How you buying another ereader is helping independent small bookstores? This woke virtue signaling is getting out of control.
Lol thanks for your input Andrei. You don't sound very much like you'd actually like to have a conversation and would just prefer to criticize myself and others, so good luck with that, and have a nice day :) if you'd like to speak to me respectfully next time, I would be happy to answer any queries.
Judge much? If someone wants and can afford multiple ereaders its’s none of your business. Your judgy comment completely put me off your channel. We aren’t here to live up to your standards. I have multiple ereaders and I definitely do not feel welcome to this channel.
@@sistergoldenhair0727 all good, thanks for dropping by, thank you for watching 🥰 I think we can all be a lot more mindful with the amount of technology we consume due to the cost to the planet and people. I’m not saying I have any standards for everyone to live up to and don’t judge anyone, I just don’t understand it. Perhaps you could have educated us in the comments as to why you believe having multiple ereaders benefits you? Having said that, people don’t always realise the true cost of consumerism, so I am just trying to educate others when I learn new information. Cobalt is a component in many electronic devices, including ereaders and smartphones, and some cobalt mines do not use ethical practices (likely influenced by the high demand for technology) and there are cases of child labor, unsafe working conditions, and human rights abuses amongst others. I think the world would be a much better place if we communicated and learned from each other and ask questions 😊 I own a lot of tech myself but I am trying to not own more than I need, and recycle when devices have lived their life. I don’t technically “need” an ereader but I want one and so do many people, as long as we are all aware of the consequences of our actions and make informed choices, as most people don’t think of where all this tech comes from and the blood sweat and tears and lives it takes from other people to make it all.
her thoughts in this video were clearly her own opinion and she didn't try to push her views at any point, just explain them. maybe you should watch it again? some of us don't want to continue contributing to constant obsession with the supply and demand of cobalt for lithium batteries in the west (children are dying every day in mines in congo for you yearly ereader purchase), or to promote amazon forcing their drivers to piss in bottles and throw them out windows or pass out on their warehouse floors. dare i go into amazon farming the data of child customers via alexa? you can think critically while enjoying amazon products, no one is forcing you to boycott - it clearly makes some of you feel bad about buying these products when you're more informed of their dodgy and illegal practices. no need to complain to someone who made a 10 minute video about their personal reasons for switching. just keep scrolling?

@@Thetrilingualreader that’s wonderful! I love meeting other language learners and polyglots 😊 one of my goals is to read Count of Monte Cristo in French 😍 need to keep practicing hehe
Doesn’t Any eReader business model, put (local) bookstores at risk, even the Rakuten Kobo model? LOVE my Kobo, BTW!
@@Mabel90666 which Kobo do you have? 🥰
Do you have an ereader? Which one and what do you love about it? ❤
@ thank you so much for sharing! I haven’t heard of pocketbook, where are you from? I still struggle finding Afrikaans books usually🥹
Interesting. What about supporting another company and not one with a near monopoly makes you angry?
Hate much?
Peace
her thoughts in this video were clearly her own opinion and she didn't try to push her views at any point, just explain them. maybe you should watch it again? some of us don't want to continue contributing to constant obsession with the supply and demand of cobalt for lithium batteries in the west (children are dying every day in mines in congo for you yearly ereader purchase), or to promote amazon forcing their drivers to piss in bottles and throw them out windows or pass out on their warehouse floors. dare i go into amazon farming the data of child customers via alexa? you can think critically while enjoying amazon products, no one is forcing you to boycott - it clearly makes some of you feel bad about buying these products when you're more informed of their dodgy and illegal practices. no need to complain to someone who made a 10 minute video about their personal reasons for switching. just keep scrolling?
