Hearing Butterfly is Wild to me. I was mildly obsessed with that song when i was younger. I never played DDR I just really liked the music video and found it really amusing
My mom bought me a cheap butterfly light up stick that sounded like it was being played through a car crash as the rubble compressed and shattered at a fair. I loved it when I was a kid but as I got older I didn't care about it anymore so I just tossed it somewhere. For the next five years I would randomly find it and it would play out that song and the quality of the song was never good but it got worse as the years went on till at some point it also began to sound like it was also being waterboarded but aslo really screechy. I finally snapped and threw it in the garbage when my parents weren't looking. Now every time i hear Butterfly all i can think of is that god forsaken stick.
Kevin here! Love how the video turned out; it's so fun and has so many neat touches the whole way through. This is definitely something I didn't expect on my feed from you but I'm very glad I did. I'm looking forward to seeing how many new players we get into the community!
10:56 When I was a kid my sister had something similar. It was like a self-contained DDR council system. It came with a box that projected the arrows up onto the wall and two game pads that plugged into it. As far as we could tell the game pads did absolutely nothing. They provided zero feedback so the fact that they plugged into the machine was literally just for show. The projector was also extremely cheep, kind of like those holiday decorations that project static images onto your house. Also it could only play like three songs and they all sucked.

I remember seeing this video when it was relatively new. I remember getting so hyped up when I saw the segment about StepManiaX. As of now, a new arcade had opened in my area in southeastern Pennsylvania that has a StepManiaX cabinet. It absolutely lives up to the hype. As much as I always thought I'd be a 4 panel DDR/ITG purist, my experience with StepManiaX has changed that. And seeing how many other people are getting hyped about StepManiaX and how much Kyle Ward loves to interact with fans, I hope to see a growing future for StepManiaX. The stage pad is definitely the best dance pad I've ever used. And the 5th center panel is really easy to adapt to for someone like that's been playing 4 panel DDR/ITG for over 15 years. I could play it for hours.
As an avid rhythm game follower for my entire life, this project was something the entire rhythm game community from East to West needed to make their identity very known to the mainstream attention, I want to thank you very much for spending so much effort into the production value and the highly in-depth research.
ah this video reminds me of the days I would come home after middle school and play stepmania for hours on my horrible hand-me-down computer. so glad to see ddr is well and alive and so diverse as well!!
I have the L-Tex pad and really happy with it. Didn’t get a bar gladly after reading some reviews but the only bad thing I can say is my feet sometimes catch on the screws and as I don’t wear shoes while using it can sometimes hurt 😅
Fellow L-tek pad owner, yeah those screws suck. Doing brackets on em are hella difficult, but you learn to deal with it with time. Hopefully you're ready to crack those panels though, ive cracked all 4 of mine while playing ITG stamina 13s and tech 11s (DDR equivalent to 17s and 18s)
this is my favorite kind of video, just unabashed enthusiasm and joy for a very specific topic. clue clearly has a love of the games and the community and its wonderful to see, his excitement is contagious. the incredibly tight and engaging structure of the video (all the way down to the editing and graphics) are just the icing on top, this entire vid is phenomenal. 💖💖💖
I played step maniax a few times at a local arcade. It was awesome. By far one of, in my opinion, the best rhythm games I’ve ever played. I’m not exactly an exercise kind of person but this was honestly the closest I’ve ever been to understanding the feeling hardcore gym guys say when they feel energized after a workout
I'm going to have say about the physical controller section is that I actually will contest that a keyboard is the highest tier you can go as a straight 4 key keyboard only allows for plain ass 4 keys while a full keyboard allows 7 keys and other types of Mania rhythm games.
My elementary school actually has a fitness arcade with ddr 2, and everyone would try to be no. 1 even tho that did nothing. I had first place and still do with a score of 300,000 in can’t stop the rain.
my man really achieved 300,000 on a ddr2 inside a whole arcade in his school. bro i’ve heard of people getting poisoned by undercooked lunch food give the guy who built that school a medal.
Burger King!❤❤❤🍔🍔🍔that's the way uh-huh,uh huh,i like it! Uh,huh,uh huh! Burger King soundtrack in my opinion.because i saw the Burger King commercial with that song!😂
6:32 Dance Dance Revolution II on the Wii is actually very good not counting the licenses. A majority of DDR X2 songs are on it, and some of the Konami originals that were on it would later arrive in later DDR games like DDR X3, DDR 2013/2014, DDR A, DDR A20/A20 Plus, and DDR A3. Plus, it has 11 boss songs and all of the DDR X2 Replicant D-Action boss songs are on it.
I was a casual that played the most on Extreme in 2004. I first played on a dare when I was at the mall with friends and saw DDR at the arcade. I was obsessed after that. It's awesome to see there's still so much DDR love. My pride and joy is my Cobalt Flux pad that I found on Craigslist years ago for $50 with a PS2 and some games. Anyways, this was a nice bit of nostalgia. Great video!
Let me talk to ya!and let me be random! I did not need DDR to know my favorite bands😁😁😁 I knew my favorite bands, because it was mainstream and people talked about them alot.

@15:30 I had one of these before and I really enjoyed it before I broke it. The best way for me to play is put the controller in a flat surface and then pretend each index finger as your individual feet. Thats it. As long as you can commit on only two fingers, it will feel most likely like DDR arcade, you will can even so legit crossovers that way.

Playing some StepManiaX when I get home from work today, feels good :) Best pad I've ever used and I've played on a ton of pads since I started in 2003. My other favorite will always be the ITG 2 dedicab pads. A classic. BTW, Kyle Ward deserves all the praise I've seen heaped onto him over the years. The man literally gave me his phone number and WANTED to talk to me one-on-one over the phone when I emailed about something that was on my mind. I thought to myself ".....wait....he has time to do that? And he....WANTS to?" His customer service is second to none and I mean that. He's incredibly passionate about the rhythm game community and it shows. When was the last time you can say that the creator/owner/contributor of a company/product emailed you or personally called you in order to discuss a possible concern of yours? It just doesn't happen. I'm not trying to place Kyle Ward on a pedestal but damn it if his work ethic and enthusiasm doesn't deserve to be recognized! He's a complete people pleaser and I can't thank him (and his teams throughout the years!) enough for everything he's contributed to rhythm games! Also, 9:32 This has been my exact experience too. Things got a bit toxic at times (certain people and certain aspects of the dance game community) circa 2007 and beyond. Players talking down to me and acting as if I should just innately know certain things. It honestly ended up being what kept me away from interacting with most of the rhythm game community online (and sometimes in person), I simply lurked and watched from the stands. No matter how good I knew I was, I was never a "pro" and I was never as good as certain people at the arcades I'd play at (won't name any names lmao) so sometimes, I'd experience that whole "You're not on my level, don't even talk to me." thing with the higher tier players. It was never everyone but there were/are definitely elitists out there, as with everything, I suppose. And I'm not gonna kid myself, I was at my prime back in 2005! These days, I'm an outta shape single dad lol. Anyway, my experience as an SMX player has been nothing but positive. Shout out to Dimo for taking time out to write me a detailed UA-cam reply on one of his videos when I asked him about timing stuff! Should out to Werdwerdus for making me feel welcomed on Discord and as someone who is starting to stream SMX! And shout out to everyone in the SMX discord who has answered questions I've had or commented on various tips I've recommended for "modding" your SMX home experience! It's a great thing to see and be a part of and I love that because I'm getting my daughter into rhythm games now so it's possible she might one day interact with the community whether in person or online. No one has ever made me feel stupid for not knowing something and no one has ever laughed at me or ignored me. People have simply been helpful and friendly, I'm really appreciative of that!
hey man, this was a really good read and it's awesome to meet you. you definitely hit the nail right on the head with the elitism thing! i guess it just comes with the property of being a pro, but i would really, really like that to change. hardcore players are way too heavy-handed, and it scares off new people from getting into it -- i was certainly a victim of that for many years. it's not just rhythm games, it's any hardcore community (smash bros, fighting games, etc). while i was getting back into the game really hard in 2018 i found myself constantly interacting with jerks that expected me to know everything already when i was just trying to reach out for help. when i was asking the community's opinions on things for the ddr video script, i discovered topics that you absolutely cannot bring up around 4-panel fans without getting your ass kicked. one example being, never bring up the client you play with. for example, stepmania 5.1, etterna, outfox, nITG, etc. it's like the console wars: people will always think whatever they use is the best. never refer to 'simcharts' as 'maps'. never say 'playing ddr', say 'playing 4-panel'. stupid semantic bullshit like that is what scares people off! my biggest goal with the ddr video was to bring some positive energy that will bring people together instead of continue to perpetuate this horribly alienated community. we all want the same thing: we just wanna hit arrows, man. why does it have to be so heated? thanks for reaching out, man, and make sure to not let them get to you. deep down this community really does love this game, but they need to be reminded that not everyone has all the knowledge on all the minute details about a specific video game.
OH! You just reminded me! Guuuuessss what showed up in my thriiift stoooore 🎶 Ok so did you know there were OEM carrying bags for the iDog, and did you know there were OEM outfits for the lil doggie boys?! They're like tiny Barbie outfits with velcro and everything! Well, did you know that if you find an iDog that had both and was stored with them that the little aux plug boot thing also doesn't oxidize? HRMMMmmm, interesting that you have a PO Box, I should consider sending you something. 🤔
i did know about the clothing, but i ended up cutting out that part of the video because i only had clothes for the i-cy during the recording session. totally a missed opportunity, i should've at least brought it up! i'd love to see what you're gonna send my way!! i'll open it up on the second channel :)
Yeah, I’ve actually had the conversation with someone who works at D&B - DDR is by far their least profitable cab, and the e-amuse cards don’t help. I remember them saying they only make about 3-4K a year, if even that much, off it.
I love your style of editing. It's so fun yet informative with the little animations and visuals. It just oozes early 2000s flare! Keep up the great work.
it was an exaggerated joke about how people use the pads but replace the hardware in the cabinet. most people don't literally throw them away (I hope!)
As an American who is seriously considering getting an L-Tek, I think I may get a Cobalt Flux kit instead and learn some new skills along the way. Update: Got an L-Tek, and it arrived. It was worth it.
Seach for DanceFit ones, they're from Brazil, but a real good copy from a Cobalt Flux (except for the zero delay that uses, it's trash). Really sturdy and awesome construction. Recommended, for sure.
L-Tek is not bad though. If you don't get the Cobalt ones and you only manage to get L-Tek you are still gonna enjoy an experience that is 10 better than a soft pad.
So I don't find L-Tek to be "C" tier. I had 2 Cobalt Fluxes in the past and my L-Tek holds up _much_ better. The old CF's I could barely muster 10s (old scale) and the accuracy suffered after a few months. My L-Tek pad has been wonderful, accurate and I haven't modded it at all. Granted, I'm not Marvelous attacking ITG songs, but I consistently PFC songs in Stepmania using default judgement settings.
I think the reason why the bar is so wobbly is actually because it’s not it’s fault it’s the platform that it’s on, it’s poorly held together with the dance pad you might want to check that out
The amount of editing that has went into this video.. I love it! The time and effort it took, I bet it was alot. Thank you for giving me eye candy. The script of this video is great too! Very clever, very enticing. Earned a sub!! Keep doing your best!
this video was phenomenal!! i usually have trouble watching long videos but i sat and watched the entire 23 minutes of this like i was a little baby stuck in front of a tv
GOD I remember the DVD game so vividly. My mom bought it once for me for Christmas thinking it was the real thing (since as a family we’ve played Scene It before) and I haven’t been the same
I have moved on to pump it up and dance rush but I remember the good old days of a random 5th mix machine at a local mall. These days I'm so happy I have a local round 1 arcade.
As a German you should be even more confused about the fact that the development of an unusual project like StepManiaX actually partially happens in Germany ;)
I used to work at the Computerspielemuseum in Berlin and heard of bewildered staff when Americans would see the dance pad exhibit and excitedly yell "DDR!!" 🤣🤣🤣
My recently opened bowling/entertainment complex has a step maniax unit and my sister was absolutely hyped when she saw it… which is how I ended up on this video because she started talking about it non stop and I wanted to know what she was on about haha Good video! Very informative and the quality is great
I think I see the problem with your handbar. At 5:00, when you wiggle it forwards and backwards, notice that it isn't the bar that's moving, but the entire platform it's attached to. Of course, I'm no expert on the construction and engineering of DDR dance pads, but if you could somehow secure the trapezoid bit the bar is attached on to the square area where the rest of the pad is, that should (hopefully, anyway) fix your issue. Great video by the way. I'm not at all into DDR (tbh I only clicked because of that weird-looking game boy accessory in the thumbnail) but this was really interesting.
i absolutely love your videos, dude! your commentary is literally fantastic, and you always seem to know everything about the topic you’re talking about. keep up the amazing work, i really admire your work. ❤️
Hey do you know if they have a keyboard controller where it's got the up down left and right like it would be on a keyboard but instead of having the left down and right all in the same row have the down spread out more like the DDR pad but it only just has those keys and that's it. Maybe even something like that but the keys are bigger like a few inches by a few inches so it's more like a hand pad so you just use like your four fingers to hit it to the buttons.
I'm going to sound like a massive heretic here.. I've had all the pads you mentioned... outside of the step maniacs and an actual cab. Though i have played on arcades alot in my day. I even own a cobolt flux. But all and all my fave has been the DDR game $299 pad. Yes it has alot of issues, my first one lasted about 5 years of moderatly heavy use. But eventually the foil just falls apart... the LEDs died within a month from being smashed between the button the wood beneath and only a few mil of foam to protect them. And requires regular cleaning as the foil flakes off over time shorting out the buttons, but i got used to it, as i got it before cobolt fluxs were around. The only pad i play better on now is an actual cab.
This reminds me of a DDR cabinet shrunk down to the size of an arrow on a hardpad. It was made by Super Impulse, and they made other small cabinets like Pac man and Galaga. It also has an LCD screen, so it’s not just a hardpad.
this is like tge second video ive watched from this channel and im already in love with the editing style and the style of the content in general. i cannot explain why but this is literally already my favorite channed,l dude
I miss DDR so badly and I'm actually getting a little emotional from this video. I used to put so many quarters in that game (MAX300 Double Heavy was my favorite track to show off with), but now I have to drive 4+ hours to reach an arcade with it so I've only played a few times in the last... decade, geez. I've got some good home pads but I just haven't been able to get back into the habit.

When I was a kid my sister had something similar.

@3:10 You're a monster if you throw the cabinet away, and keep the pads. That's a piece of history!
it was an exaggerated joke about how people use the pads but replace the hardware in the cabinet. most people don't literally throw them away (I hope!)
As an American who is seriously considering getting an L-Tek, I think I may get a Cobalt Flux kit instead and learn some new skills along the way.
Update: Got an L-Tek, and it arrived. It was worth it.
Good luck!!
Seach for DanceFit ones, they're from Brazil, but a real good copy from a Cobalt Flux (except for the zero delay that uses, it's trash). Really sturdy and awesome construction. Recommended, for sure.
Cirno gangg
I don't know what it is but the phrase "furry vtuber" lights up the exception center of my brain despite almost never watching streams
I think the reason why the bar is so wobbly is actually because it’s not it’s fault it’s the platform that it’s on, it’s poorly held together with the dance pad you might want to check that out

I see a problem with your profile picture
i absolutely love your videos, dude! your commentary is literally fantastic, and you always seem to know everything about the topic you’re talking about. keep up the amazing work, i really admire your work.
My local arcade just replaced their DDR cabinet with a Step Maniax cabinet, super fun and super good song selection.
I love this video had not thought of DDR in at least 10 years
I'm going to sound like a massive heretic here..
