Those were the times when BMW was synonym for Great Car Designs, Great Performance,Great Affordability and Bulletproof Reliability.

Blade ManX Yup. In the 90´s they were reliable cars, especially the Diesel ones, they were bulletproof.
My Dad owned a 530d with more than 500k miles on it(with normal regular maintenance, oil etc etc), and if it wasn´t an accident (2 years ago) which was not his fault, it would be here today perfectly running.

Thank god someone mentioned BMW and reliability in the same sentence. Unlike the JDM cars, the german cars are as reliable as their owners. JDM cars do not require that level of upkeep or involvement, along with commitment, which is why they aren't engineered in the same way. They just appeal to the masses and be cheap and economical. When you have a car like the E39 which can do everything from picking your kids up from school to setting your hair on fire on a backroad, it requires some thinking and commitment, along with money of course.
Dream car of my early teen years. Will definitely have to buy a low mileage one to daily so I don't get bored driving to work and back. Maybe some donuts in parking lots where no one is around.

If I could have one car, and one car only for my entire life to use daily and also have fun with, this would be it. I actually did think long and hard about this and I can't find a better car to pick: it doesn't have all the unneeded modern electronics like new cars today, has that N/A V8 which sounds like nothing in today's turbocharged world, it looks absolutely amazing even today and I don't think it will look any worse in the future, I can get passengers in there - it does everything without being overloaded with new tech, or having a very unreliable/hard to maintain engine like the E60's V10. I'll get one of these after college when I can actually afford the gas mileage, until then I'm staying with my extremely fun and beautiful Ford Mondeo. :D

The E39 is an absolute monster and it definitely can hold its own in a decent track, for sure not an auto-cross. For those of you not wanting to deal with problems (they're pretty reliable), you can pick up an E39 540i which will give you just as many thrills without the headaches, though VANOS seals and timing chain tensioners still apply. The 540i is a true bargain of a car for what you get. I'd be all over a carbon black E39 M5 any day of the week!
Thanks for the well wishes. I am still looking at either a carbon black or green E39 M5. A lot of silver and black ones out there. When it comes to ore-2005 BMWs in general, I think she is a number to be honest. If they have been maintained and cared for, they will last longer than most cars. They were simple and driver focused to begin with, unlike modern BMWs, which means someone like me would rather spend the money maintaining and preserving them than buying a new BMW devoid of emotions. Also, I can't imagine how much these new BMWs will cost when they get as old as E39s. They'd be disposable at best, like most cars after 100, 000 miles.

A 530i with a sport package is a pretty good deal and they seem to be creeping up in prices. You gotta watch out for those auto transmissions, but hopefully it's not a big issue. Most of the times, a fluid flush and filter change is all the steptronic boxes need. Not sure if you are in the same boat though. Keep her tidy !!
That code does refer to a torque converter, but from my understanding, the unit itself is not the problem. It could most likely be the torque converter seal, which similar to the VANOS seals, gets worn over time. The main thing however is that the fluid and filter have never been changed, which I would recommend being the first step. Have that changed and see if it solves your problem. It would be cheaper to do that than tearing down the transmission and getting at the torque converter or the seal. Auto tranny fluid and filter have shorter intervals, unlike a manual transmission which can run for a long long time on the same fluid and require no transmission filters or coolers. Try that and hopefully it works out to be a minor issue. Otherwise, I would suspect the torque converter seal from there. If your transmission has not gone into fail safe mode and is getting into every gear, then the TQ converter is fine and just needs the old fluid and filter changed. If it has left you in fail safe mode and you can't shift into gears, you got a big problem.
540i is no comparison to the M5. I really want to sell mine and get into the true M. It's a good car but it has its issues.

i've driven a 2003 e39 525i , not a fast car but very enjoyable to drive. The inline 6 NA sounds nice and the car looks great. No doubt e39 is my favorite.
I like it but my fav M5 is defintely the E60

Had no idea this car uses recirculating ball steering. Even by 2001, pretty much everything modern uses rack and pinion.
I think they had some packaging issues when they shoved it all in that engine bay. A bizarre choice indeed.
Dylan Lewis the 6 cyl 5s do have rack & pinion, the V8s (540i/M5) used the recirc ball
It wasn't a packaging issue, it was because the rec. ball gave better feedback.
For me e38 and e39 are two best cars that exist

I love the E39, but most on the 7 series and on the 5 series, the 3 series isn't that great in my opinion. Heard lots of bad things about it. But the M5 here sounds really great, I guess if I find a proper one with 400HP an acceptable milage and if I can afford one any time, I will definately buy it

Haha, road tax is not a thing we pay in the States. We usually only pay sales tax on the initial purchase of the car, and a cheap registration fee ($100-$400) every year after that.

You are talking too much. Way too much! This youtube channel is (was) awesome for testing the cars and letting us hear the natural noises of the cars on the road, not useless comments.
