  • Car restoration has always been my passion and in this video i show you the process of buying a used car which the owner thought had a bad head gasket. In this case, the car is an abandoned BMW e39 5 series. I then show you how to test a car for a bad head gasket including how to do a combustion gas leak test, how to do a compression test and how to do a cylinder leak down test only to find that the car doesnt have a bad head gasket. However the car does have a misfire so i then show you how to diagnose a car misfire step by step including testing the short term fuel trims and how to use smoke to find a hidden vacuum leak in car, which is the cause of the misfire. After fixing the misfire, i then show you a few Satisfying Car Restoration sneak peeks of the upcoming restoration of the car.

This is something that almost no one from my close friends understand. When I tell them that I want to buy old car, such as 90s bmw, I get responses like "but do you know, that you will end up paying three times as much as you bought it for because it will sit in service every week?" or "do you know that you can use this money to buy something reliable". But that's not the way I see things, they all expect me to think that I buy an old cheap car and be surprised when it breaks down, but that's opposite I think of. I can't wait to spend my time under the car and learn how to work on it and spend time with people who share the same passion as me!
This type of videos are really informative and I love that I learnt something new from them. Thank you!

With new and even used cars so unafforable, it's imperative to maintain your older car. I drive a 2002 Mercedes with 256K miles on it, and a head gasket leak on #4 out the side of the head. What else can I do? And yeah, I could do with a whole lot of the parts he mentions in restoration.

Brilliant. What a joy to see someone who can speak clearly, hold a camera in position, focus, edit and just really plan and deliver a classy and informative product. A little poignant for me as I had a lovely E39 528i - a couple of years older than this one but maybe cleaner. Started overheating. Had a bit of work done in one garage which cured it for a while. Overheated again and I left it at another place but he could never seem to get to it. Took it back home and went through some of the steps in the video. No oil in water, no combustion gas in water. Between first garage and home the radiator, water pump, thermostat etc. were replaced. Ultimately to no avail. Suspect some (many?) head studs were pulling from the block even though no detectable intermixing of gas/fluids. Diagnosis based on fact that it would run OK until warmed up then all hell would break loose. Now, the big problem was that I had sold the house and was working in a different city. So, the dear old thing went away on the back of a truck to who knows what fate. I can still smell the leather interior and hear that straight six twin-cam growl in my mind. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have time, tools and space aplenty to keep her on the road.

Mate I am so happy to have found your channel! I have a 2003 E39 525i and have already replaced the valve cover gasket, crankcase ventilation system, oil pan gasket and done numerous other jobs. All with the help of UA-camrs from the USA. I can't wait to see your future videos. Your mechanical skills, presentation and camera skills are excellent.

$100k in 2003? Australian? It was around $41k in US.
Edit: $725 was an absolute bargain though 😊

Wow, as just about everyone else has said. This is the absolute best automotive diagnostic video on UA-cam. As I've always suspected with modern cars, when some part of the systems fail, others are sure to follow. You fixed everything. None of this, the dealer quoted me $6000 and I fixed it for just $50 nonsense. Greatly appreciate your effort and skills. Subscriped! Michael in Toronto.

I'll tell you what man, I had a 2000 E39 540i and I loved that thing, but the cost to repair it was so expensive! Honestly this video totally inspired me to get some tools and start working on cars. I've always found it intimidating to get started, but you break it down so easy! I might have to buy me a cheap 540 again and start to tinker with it.

I just bought a e36 318i cabrio with only 79000 km. I drove the car for some time without any problems, and now I feel like it's hard to start, there are rev drops and misfires. I've been to 2 mechanics and none of them took the initiative to check the leaks and failures, they told me to let it go and see what happens. I don't feel comfortable doing it and your video really helped me understand what kind of problems the car might have. Excellent video!

You actually educate the viewer as your explaining. Not every DIY mechanic is aware of some of the things you you've mentioned.
