Common sterilization methods are tackled here such as sun bathing, using heat from oven or microwaves, and the controversial "chemical sterilization" are described step-by-step. Effects of practicing sterilization is also explained in the video.

To answer your question
1. Sterilize everything. Not just the soil but everything you’ll use in seed sowing.
2. Prepare your soil mix. No perfect soil mix ika mo nga sir, but it should retain moisture
3. Put your seeds on the pot together with the soil mix, press the seeds lightly as cactus seeds does not have that much stored energy.
4. Waiiiit. Make sure not to open the lid or plastic of your pot or containers because it might introduce it to fungi and other bad elements

1. Make a soil medium that retains water. A mixture of organic and inorganic media is good. Use a well draining soil as much as possible.
2. This is the most important step of all, Sterilization. Sterilize the medium that you will be using to make sure that there is no bacteria left. It involves heat either through fire or steam. By using this step you should always remember not to go beyond 100 degrees celcius for its chemical reactions to our medium. We can use different sterilization method such as using microwave (1 min is enough but the only disadvantage of this is that it can't be used for massive sterilization because of it's limited space), oven(5 - 10 mins, don't go beyond 100 °C and remember to make the medium moist/wet, this is good for massive sterilization), pressure cooker(used by massive sterilization in a lot of laboratories), pasteurization( let it cool for 2-3 hours), sunbathing for 2 to 3 days full sun (it is better to wrap it with plastic to protect them from contaminants), chemical sterilization (not recommended for newbies and will be using layers of fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides before sowing the seeds)
3. Sow the seeds; enclose them for 8-12 months. It is highly recommended to use plastic containers or zip-lock basta yung mga see through po para mas madaling makita yung loob and iwas temptasyon na paulit ulit buksan yung plastic para sumilip sa growth ng mga seeds. Label it with it's name and date/month/year to keep track of when did you sow it.
4. Aftercare: transfer the seedlings to individual pots, place them in a brightly shaded area and slowly introduce them to mr. sun.
It needs a lot of efforts to grow cactus from seeds but for sure it would be 100% worth it specially when you finally get to see the fruit of the seeds you have planted 💟

2. Sterelize soil medium
3. Prepare the pot and sow the seeds evenly, Water the soil and Cover the pot with clear plastic and Store in a shaded area, wait for 8-12 months for the seeds to grow 😊
4. Repot 😍 transfer grown seedlings to separate pots for them to breathe and grow faster, introduce them to light slowly but surely, and finally... Enjoy the fruit of thy labor 💕🍓

*Here's the 4Steps Method Sowing Cacti Seeds*
1ST STEP:
Make a soil medium that retains water. (Mix organic and inorganic materials - cocopeat peatmoss vermicast, compost,vermiculite.perlite.pumice and sand soak in water for 5mins. )
2ND STEP : Sow seeds and enclose them for 8-12mos.
( Using baggy method with pot and rubberband or microwable containers without a hole Or mini green house box or make a DIY greenhouse box )
3rd step: PLACE THE SEEDLINGS IN A SHADED AREA ( Avoid direct sunlight, LESS SUNLIGHT LESS PROBLEM )
4TH STEP : STERILIZATION. Soil mix could be heat in any of ff: Microwave, Oven, Pressure cooker, pasteurization, Sun bathing 2-3days or Chemical Sterilization- Soak soil mix overnight using systemic fungicide then layering soilmix with Slow Fert, Fungicide and Insecticide. 🤞😊

Thank you for your videos. It's very informative and you are really helping and inspiring cactus hobbyist.
1)Prepare a pot with holes and soil mix that retains water (50% soil less, 25% fine sand and 25% pumice and lava rocks.
2) Sterilize the prepared medium and make sure not over 100 degrees Celsius (I used a kawali with a cover and I sterilize it for 3-🎄5 minutes in a medium heat).
3) Sow the seeds (make sure to sterilize with 3% hydrogen peroxide for 20 to 30 minutes before sowing).
4) (After care: Enclosed the sown seeds in a plastic bag to retain moisture and place it in a bright lit shaded area and make sure to cover them for 8-12 months to prevent from any fungus infestations.
I have a sown fraelia, fero and melo seeds last October 31, 2019 and the result is amazing and for my assessment it is a success so far.

thank you for your informative and enthusiastic videos , I want to ask when one have gone through all the steps and sealed the pots in plastic to retain moisture - do you open it at anytime to spray with water before any seeds have sprouted - or must I keep it sealed all the time until seeds sprouts ?
4 Methods of Seed Sowing
Best Practice especially for us “Newbies” in this hobby is “ NEVER GO WRONG WITH THE BASICS” - our mantra in life
1. Make a Soil Medium that retains water.
Its a combination of Organic and Inorganic Materials. Any Mix will do. There is no perfect formula for “Soil Mix”
2. To be able to successfully germinate our seeds well we need to Sterilize our Soil Mix. You can either microwave your soil mix, use oven or pressure cooker for large amount of soil mix. Make sure that you dont go up to 100 C temperature to avoid unneccesary chemical reaction on your soil mix that might hard your seed germination process. Also other method will be Pasteurization and SunBathing.
3. Sowing the seeds by evenly distributed on top of your soil mix, following the baggy method spray the soil mix to moisture it then enclosed it for 8- 12 months.
4. Lastly, Put the seedlings under shaded area. “Less Sun = Less Problem”

Can they get light from a light bulb?
1. Prepare the soil mixture. The composition should be slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5), not too rich in nutrients, very permeable to air and water, a fine structure such as pumice, perlite, coarse river sand and garden soil.
2. Soil disinfection/sterilization
- could be done using microwave for 1 min, oven up to 10mins or pressure cooker (temp shoul not exceed 100 °c) or by using chemical disinfectant like fungicide
3. On the bottom of the pots about 1 cm of gritty materials (sterilized) like pumice or lava rock or small gavel must be installed which constitute the deep drainage. Then we can fill the pot with the sterilized soil
4. Place the seeds on the surface of the soil and spray water (preferably distilled). It is not necessary to cover the seeds with more soil.
5. After performing all the operations, it is necessary to proceed immediately to watering. It's important to remember that all the wettings of this phase will be performed from the bottom and ascend the moisture by capillarity throughout the substrate, through the holes on the base of the pots. The water to be used must also previously sterilized by boiling or distilled water. After a few minutes you will notice the humidity emerge in pots.
6. To avoid seed dessication, it is important to provide a humid atmosphere to the newly sowed seeds. Place the pot inside of a plastic bag and seal with a rubber band.
7. Place the pot in bright shaded area. When new plants already sprout, observation of the seedlings will help us understand if the brightness is the right one. If the color of the plant tends to pink or red probably the brightness is too high, while it tends to white, to yellow or faded green is poor. In the this situation the seedlings tend to stretch and spin (etiolate).

- sterilize the soil medium

- and, place it on the shaded area

2. Sterilize the medium using microwave, oven, pressure cooker, sun bathing or chemical sterilization. It is important to note that you won't exceed 100 degrees celsius to avoid chemical reactions. Make sure that the soil is moist/wet before sterilization to avoid burning the soil.
3. Sow the seeds. Make sure to tag each pot with the date of sowing, name of the plant and any notes that would be helpful to you. Put the seedling pots in an enclosed container like clear plastic bags. Spray with water to ensure that the seeds get wet. Seal the bag then...
4. Put the seedlings in shaded area to avoid dehydration and algae growth. Keep the seedlings in the enclosure for 8 to 12 months.

After the long period na naka sealed or green house dapat po yatang slowly ay acclimatize yung seedlings para masanay sa new environment. Fisrt time po ako nagpropagate ng binili kong cactus seeds. Pero mas marami ang tumubo dun sa newly harvest kong seed na accidente lang na meron dun sa binili kong cactus plant. Kasya dun sa nabili ko lang na seeds. Para po sa akin learning process trial lang. Hope to learn more on you video lalo na kung paano during summer at mahumid ang area. What to do?
hello miss edith. you are absolutely brilliant! yes you are right, acclimatization is the number one key not only in seedlings but as well as with other plants too. The ability of seeds to survive or germinate successfully lessens as time passes. The earlier the seeds are grown the better. :)

Step 1
Make a soil medium that retains water.
Water is one of the main factors in seed germination. When they lose moisture, growth will be hindered because they need water to make food.
-Soil medium can be made by using two types of materials: inorganic (vermiculite, perlight, pumice, sand) and organic (coco peat, peat moss, vermicast, compost materials). Can mix and match them. Any mix will do as long as it holds more water. Mix very well to make sure all components are distributed evenly.
Step 2
Sterilization.
Sterilizing the soil medium is very important for seed sowing or even in regular potting. It involves one major thing: HEAT (thru fire or steam). Avoid going to 100 degrees Celsius mark because when you reach that level there is a chemical reaction to the soil mix, they may have by-products that we are not certain if will be helpful or damaging to the seeds. It may result to not allowing the seeds to germinate or may intoxicate.
Methods to use for sterilization:
A. Microwave. Microwave for 1 minute using the lowest/minumum heat. This method really helps eradicating the eggs, maggots, fungus spores, any insects. This method will definitely kill a lot of bacteria in the medium. The only disadvantage is you cannot use it for massive sterilization because of the small space it offers. .
B. Oven. Make sure to not going to 212 degrees Fahrenheit mark (equivalent to 100 degrees Celsius). Oven for 5 to 10 minutes. This can be used for massive sterilization.
C. Pressure cooker. Also good for massive sterilization.
D. Pasteurization. Boil water, get the soil mix ready and pour the hot water all over it then let it cool for 2-3 hours.
E. Sun bathing. Just put the soil mix on the floor or a container, cover to avoid contaminants and place it under full sun for 2-3 days.
F. Sterilization through chemical means. This is an advanced method, not recommended for newbies. Should be used with extreme precaution.
How to?
-Prepare fungicide solution (use systemic fungicide, do not use nordox for seedlings).
-Soak medium overnight in the fungicide solution.
...then (a)fill the pot half full of medium (had been soaked to fungicide overnight); (b)put slow release controlled fertilizers (just a few); (c)put a layer of soil on top of the fertilizers; (d)put a pinch of systemic insecticide; (e)add another layer of soil; (f)put a pinch of fungicide; (g)put another layer of soil; (h)then sow the seeds on top.
Step 3
Sow the seeds and enclose them for 8-12 months.
To avoid fungus and insects to get inside, make sure the container is enclosed. A regular pot maybe used but put it inside the plastic and use rubber band to seal. After putting the pot into the plastic, spray with water to make sure the seeds will get really wet. Then seal. Microwavable containers can be used but do not put holes.
Step 4
Put the seedlings in a shaded area.
Seedlings are quite sensitive specially during the first quarter. An exposure to direct sunlight will dehydrate them, will stop their growth or may eventually kill them. Sun exposure also promotes the growth of algae. Seedlings should be placed in a shaded area because less sun, less problems.
Additional notes:
-Under Sterilization, using methods A (microwave) and B (oven), make sure to moist or wet the medium because a very high temperature will cause the medium to burn if the medium is dry.
-Before sowing the seeds, to make the medium is moist, soak the container that you have filled with the soil mix in water for 5 minutes.
-Evenly distribute the seeds on top of the medium. Put a tag on each pot - date of sowing, name of the plant or any special note.
-The pot must be relative to the quantity of seeds that you are going to have.

you can but i dont suggest it. i like the hot water to stick around with the soil medium until it cools down. i want to be sure that all the eggs, maggots, scales, etc would die off :) nice question there

Help please!!! I am a newbie I live in the foothills of North Carolina
USA 4 equal seasons. I presently own 23 different cacti the variety of
cactus some I have are "Echinocereus Enneacanthus /Lobivia Schieleana
Quiabayensis / Parodia Tredecimcostata / Notocactus / /Parodia aculta /
Rebutia Flavistyla / Echinopsis Subdenudaa / Mammillaria Perbella. (I
only buy the ones that flower). I have had a perfect spring and summer
(outdoors) much fruit many flowers I am enjoying myself immensely BUT, BUT!
To say I am confused on the right way the best way to care for cacti is
a understatement because there are so many different opinions on
UA-cam. As an example of what I mean some say during the winter to
water once a month another once every six weeks another once every two
months or still another not to water at all for four months total.......
Can someone recommend the number 1 book for beginners growing cacti the

The methods of sterilizations are:
1 use a microwave
2. Oven
3. Pressure cooker
4. Boiling
5. Sun bath

1st: fetilizers - osmocote 14-14-14; pete's brand which has trace elements; calcium nitrate; foliar ferts those with trace elements please. refrain from using vermi or other compose type ferts as they could promote fungus
2nd: time of application - as early as the first month you can apply trace elements, calcium nitrate on the 6th week but half the dosage ha. osmocote on the 2nd month (but pls dont put so many). or you could try putting osmocote below the seedlings. long story but Ill give a demo on this too soon.
Please refrain from feeding them aggressively, dont use UREA as it's so high in Nitrogen. Even Thai breeders don't use it for seedlings. It makes the plants go weak when they grow.

After po ma mix ang Soil then do the Sterilization.Im a newbie and trying to go to this hobby as a business im just giving my Idea lol XD
use pre-mixed potting soil.
don't forget to sterilize the soil mix.
moisten the soil thoroughly or double pot it.
sprinkle the seeds on top of the moist soil and spray some water.
put the pot inside the ziplock bag or seal using glass or plastic
Put label and date on it.
Place in a bright shaded area.
And wait wait wait till it pop. Tulad ng paghihintay mo sa kanya 😂

Hi po sir ano po opinion nyo on using hydrogen peroxide to sterilize the soil medium
Newbie po ko sa seed sowing and i heard na may gumagamit din po nang peroxide
4 methods of sowing seeds:
1. Prepare a soil medium that retains water. Any kind of soil mix as long as it holds water very well then that is good to go. Just to be sure for the newbies, you can actually use 60% of organic soil (vermicast, peat moss, compost material) and 40% inorganic soil (pearlite, pumice, vermiculite and sand). After mixing properly the soil medium, put it in a pot then soak it in water for 5mins. To have a higher germination rate.
2. Make sure that you sterilized ur soil medium to have a higher germination rate. Sterillization is a process of using heat thru fire or steam. do not go beyond 100 deg celcius temp. Because it creates chemical reaction to the soil mix that leads to intoxication.It has a lot of different processes to use.
A. Using Microwave - use atleast 1min or less with the lowest or minimal heat. Its best use in eradicating eggs, funggus pores, bacteria.microwave is use only for small amount of soil sterilization and not for massive amount of it.
B. Using Oven - turn ur oven into less than 100 deg celcius temp in 5 to 10mins. then make sure that the soil medium is moist when you put it inside so that it will not explode. Advantage for massive amount of soil sterillization.
C. Using Pressure cooker- usually use in laboratories and can produce massive amount of soil sterillization. 15psi for 15 mins.
D. By Pasteurization - prepare a kettle to boil water and after boiling it, pour it to ur prepared medium and let it stay for 2 to 3 hours.
E. Sun bathing - prepare the soil medium in a container then let it rest under full sun for 2 to 3 days and placed it inside a plastic bag then sealed it.
F. Chemical sterillization - not recommendable for newbies. U can mix some fungicide, insecticide on ur medium.
3. Sow the seeds: after preparing the soil medium, sowing the seeds is the next thing to do. Enclose them for 8 to 12 months in a baggy method, microwave containers or in a greenhouse box.
A. Baggy method is by putting the soil medium in a pot with a hole then put the pot inside the plastic bag and sealed by a rubber band or u can use a zipplocked.
B. Microwave container - u can put the soil medium in this container with out a hole at the bottom so that funggus and bacteria cannot get inside. wait for 8 to 12 months for it to grow.
C. Greenhouse box - you may prepare a greenhouse box, put the pot with sowed seeds in it then closed it until it grow.
After sowing, you must put a tag with the name of the plant and the date it was sowed and put it inside the plastic. Please dont forget to water the seeds after sowed.
4. Lastly, put the seedlings in a shaded area especially during its 1st quarter because seeds are most sensitive at this time. Exposure to direct sunlight will dehydrate the seedlings, stunttered growth will happen and eventually will kill them. less sun means less problem. Reminder: pot must be relative to the quantity of seeds. Few seeds means smaller pot and many seeds means bigger pot needed.
4 Steps how to sow seeds
STEP 1: STERILIZED THE SOIL MIX / medium ( make sure that your medium retains water
STEP 2: Sparkle the seed on top of your soil mix ( you can straine or filter some sand on the top if you want )
STEP 3: Mist it sparingly or soak it on water
Lastly
STEP 4: Cover it or put it on a plastic with rubber bonds or some enclosure to make sure that the seeds do wet .
Note: dont put it in direct sunlight..

EXPERIENCED HOBBYISTS may use chemical sterilization but extra precaution must be exercised
3. When soil mix is properly sterilized, layer the seeds evenly on top (optional: you may cover it with a thin layer of sterilized soil)
4. Cover it for 8-12 months, put a name label/date sowed and wait for it to grow!

Do you sell seeds sir?
1. Choose your seeds to sow, buy only from trusted sources para sure na legit cacti seeds siya.
Then Prepare your soil mix : organic and inorganic as long as magretain ng water which is needed for seedling stage ng cacti to sustain it's growth.
2. Sterilize your soil mix by either "cooking" in a microwave, oven or pressure cooker (make sure to don't go over 100° celsius). You can also soak the mix in boiling water for 2-3hours or let it bask in the sun for 2-3 days. You can use fungicide to sterilize your mix but risky kapag di kabisado ang mixing proportions kasi fragile ang cacti seedlings.
3. Sow your seeds and enclose in plastic, dome cup or etc as long as mamaintain ang moisture for the seedlings.
4. Place in a bright area at least 8-12 months and if pwede na sila iexpose sa outside environment then yiu can open the "moisture chamber."

General cactus seed sowing steps:
1. SEED PREPARATION AND STERILIZATION
Sterilize the seeds by putting them in a sealed container with 10 volumes hydrogen peroxide for 3-4 hrs. Then from time to time, agitate the seeds by shaking. After inducing the seeds for 3-4hrs, wash the seeds. (Gamit po kayo ng pinakapinong strainer), dry the seeds. I use coffee filters for drying. Pwede tissue kaso fibrous po sila, might stick to the seed and cause fungal attack.
2. SOWING MEDIA PREPARATION AND STERILIZATION
Prepare your sowing media while the seeds are being induced in the solution.
My medium composition: 55% ramgo soil less medium(available at handyman or any diy stores), 40%vermicast, 5% fine pumice or you can use construction sand. For 30 minutes ( with hottest setting on your stove or the setting where water would boil), sterilize your moist medium (add a bit of water to the medium, not soaking wet)
Mix the medium well. On a pan or casserole, (old, one that you will not use for cooking anymore. hehe pang sterilization purpose na lang) depending on the amount of medium you prepare. Cool down your medium (do not sow on a hot medium).
3. SOWING
Put your cool downed medium on a clear microwaveable container. (Use a deep one to give room for the roots to grow and so your seedlings will not hit the lid when they grow.) Wag niyo po ibabaon yong buto. Then mist the seeds to adhere on the medium. (Use distilled water or water being brought to boil just cool it first before misting)
4. LABELING AND REGULAR MONITORING
Label the container. Cover. Put on a bright cold area. I put mine where morning sun would hit them. monitor weekly. You will be tempted to open. But we advice you not to, to avoid any contamination. I open the container within 4-6 months depending on the condition of the seedlings (large enough to survive the open environment or kung siksikan na yung seedlings).

The 4 steps in seed sowing are the following:
1. Clean the seeds (tanggalin po yung parang white fluid na parang nagdidikit sa mga seeds, na hi-hinder po kasi nito ang pagtubo ng seeds. You can use potable water or Distilled water po sa paglilinis ng seeds. I suggest po na ilagay ang mga laman ng seed pod sa isang clean tea bag then it will serve po as strainer habang nililinis nyo ng water ang seeds, this will ensure na wala pong masasayang na seeds). Aside from cleaning the seeds, dapat po linisin din ang pots na gagamitin, usually po nililinis ko po ng soap and water ang plastic pots ko, I also use scotch brite po to make sure na super linis ng pot. Make sure din po that your pot have holes.
2. Prepare the soil mix that will retain water, then sterilized the soil mix. (Usually po microwave method ang ginagawa ko, same procedure po ng sinabi ni sir Marlon. Nasa lowest temperature po then 1 min lang po. And moist po yung soil mix.)
3. Put the sterilized soil mix in the clean pot. Then add fungicide, insecticide and fertilizer (level by level, kagaya po nung na discussed ni sir Marlon). Then add another level of soil mix, then add the seeds. If you want to be a good breeder, dapat parating may LABEL ang mga seeds na na-sow nyo. Important po na may name and date kung kailan kayo nag-sow ng seeds. Wag nyo po igaya sa love life nyo ang seed sowing, na parating walang label hahahaha chos lang po happy new year po hahaha :)
4. Cover the pot with plastic (secured with rubber band) to maintain the moisture. Place it in a location without direct sunlight, yung gradual light pa lang po.

Sa paghahanda ang pinaka importante lang moist siya. Mas maganda gumamit kung ano meroon sa garden naten organic (coco peat, moss,etc) and inorganic (sand, pumice,etc).
#2 LUGAR NA PAGLALAGYAN
Ihanda ang lugar na paglalagayan(binta,shade area)at lugar na paglalagayan (paso,container na transparent)na depende sa itatanim kung konte maliit nalalagyanan.
#3 PAGTATANIM
Siguraduhing na sterilise ang gagamitin Soil mixture. Para masiguro ang healthy at maayos na pagtubo.
A. Naglagay sa paso/container ng soil mix.
B. Siguraduhing moist ito pero hindi sobrang basa.
C. Ilagay ang cactus seeds sa paso o container.
D. Diligan ng sapat.
E. Ibalot sa plastic o takpan ang container.
#4 MAGHINTAY (Pinaka importante)
6 month to 1 year bago buksan.Dahil sa hakbang na ito maraming hindi nakakagawa. Nakitang may umusbong bubuksan sa pagkakabalot/ tatangalin ang takip ng container. Nabibitin ang paglaki at kadalasan dito na nagsisimula ang mga pests, insects and fungus. At huwag hawakan o galawin ang mga tumubo na dahil pwedeng maputol ang bagung tubong ugat na maging sanhi ng pagkamatay.
