  • Craigs easy step-by-step guide will show you how to grow your own cactus plants from seed at home. Cactus seeds grow surprisingly fast and our cactus seed propagation tips will help you get a great success rate.
Our tips for growing Cactus plants from seeds are:
    - Find a reliable supplier of cacti seeds. Fresh seeds will be far more likely to grow into healthy cactus plants. Try our UK seed shop: growparadise.co.uk/product-ca...
    - The best potting mix to sow cactus seeds into needs to be free draining. Either purchase a dedicated cactus soil mix or create your own by adding horticultural grit or perlite to your seed compost.
    - Surface sow your cactus seeds and only lightly cover them with compost.
    - Water your cacti seeds & seedlings enough to keep them hydrated, but try to avoid water logging the soil. Cactus plants hate having their roots in water for long periods of time.
    - When your young cactus plants are large enough to handle, gentle prick them out and pot them into their own individual pots.
    - Use smaller pots to prevent the excess soil sitting wet. Cactus seedling require well drained soil.
    - Pot on your cactus seedlings when they fill the pot with roots.

Can I ask I’m just about to plant my first cactus seeds, I’ve got a good succulent mix with perlite zeolite activated charcoal small amount of worm castings etc, it’s getting warm UK with occasional overcast days. I’ve got a propagator from Amazon with led lights, the apartment never drops below 22c even in winter example today is sunny it’s 26c in here with 55 humidity. Should i use just the grow lights? If so how long or if it’s really sunny leave them in bright indirect light? I have huge windows SE facing. Could I do a mix of sun (indirect or full) I’m not sure ? And now how much do the seeds a day require light wise whether that be from sun or leds. So
    Grateful for any replies.

Patience, many seeds can take several months or even a year to germinate.

I would use a more mineral based substrate. Ideally there should be a very small amount of organic matter or none at all, it will be easier long term.

Why's it really matter? I've been using a miracle grow cactus mix in an orange bag for years now. It's pretty much all soil. All my cactus do great in it. I've even grown cactus in just normal soil right from Walmart. Does it really.make much difference at the end of the day?

@@KZ-wk4xb Cacti in organic substrate are way more rot prone especially the napiform rooted species because the soil doesn't dry out fast enough. Mineral and loam based substrate is also closer to the soil in habitat for desert cacti. Organic substrate may also be too rich and lead to bloated growth.
