  • This video goes through a 4L60E from top to bottom and it follows along with the service manual. In this video, you will see factory measurements, specifications, and inspection. I also demonstrate the common vacuum testing locations. This video is used in the SIU Automotive transmissions course when students want to overhaul a 4L60E. They are required to watch this video first before tearing into the unit.

    Extremely well presented! Having watched many of your other videos in the Auto Transmission playlist, the voiceover was brilliantly executed. Thanks!

      Live is always best!
      Your voiceover was nicely choreographed with the video content. I think it adds value to that which you're describing. You clearly know your stuff and present very well.
      The engineering that's gone into these transmissions is impressive. It's crazy to think the BEVs use only a single gear reduction, except for the Porsche Taycan I believe, and do away with the need for a transmission.

      @@siuautomotive I prefer live method, but you did very good with the voice over. I've watched it 2 or 3 times. Where can I go to get certified to rebuild transmission? Been studying for over a year on 4l60e. I'm pretty confident in it.

    As a junior in high school in 1981 I really wanted to attend the SIU automotive program after graduation. My parents (SIU grads, I was born in Carbondale) wanted me to get a conventional degree. I have done well, but still regret not following my heart. In the next couple weeks I'll begin a rebuild of the 4l60E from my 2004 Envoy XUV.

    One clarification is that if the pin that secures the band has not been removed first, or the band is not cleared the retainer pin from inside the case, you AIN'T gonna simply reach in and remove the drums.

    Is there a way to air check the pump stator seal rings after installing the pump to make sure they didn't get chopped during installation?

      New or remanufactured as stated in video. I believe one gets what is paid for. An old TC that fails in a rebuilt transmission means Everything has to get rebuilt, again! Purge the cooler while the lines are disconnected.

    Thnk u 4 the clip but i would hav appreciated u telling us diyers how to do things @ home ! Like sizeing the teflon orings ect.

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  3 роки тому +2

      You can align the pump halves with hose clamps. The 2/4 servo needs 1/16 to 1/8" movement when installed and pressing on the cover. The teflon seals can be resized using electrical tape and a hose clamp, or sometimes even a zip tie. If the rings are in good shape, just reuse them. Many builders don't change those rings. They usually last forever. Other than that, there are not many tools needed.

      Vasoline or trans assembly lube. It allows you to stick bearings and shims in place for assembly.

    Can the case saver also be referred to as an "anti-clunk spring"?

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  3 роки тому +2

      Yes sir! It keeps the low roller housing lugs in contact with the case lugs so they don’t “clunk” when the trans downshifts from 2nd to 1st. If it wasn’t there, it’d eventually beat the case lugs out.

    Hello i have enjoyed your video and find it to be very useful tool, i have a couple questions if you don't mind i rebuilt my 4L60E and reverse stopped working and my sunshell is good i replaced it in the rebuild also the 3-4 clutches burnt up again as to that is the cause of original failure. CAN YOU HELP ??? THANKS

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  Рік тому

      The 3-4 burn up is common on these. The input shaft can get loose and that causes 3rd oil to leak out. The valve body has a few valves that cause a loss of 3rd oil. The the abuse valve plugs, worn afl bore, and the capsulated check ball in the case.

    Does anybody know if it matters the position of the rear case bushing when installed? I installed my bushing and lined up one of the slots of the bushing with the oil slot of the case, didnt know if the slot position of the bushing was important.

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  3 роки тому +1

      I don’t think it matters, but I always line up the slot as well! But I’ve seen them installed from the factory in random positions.

      I dont know if it matters but they arent lined up from the factory, I marked the spot with marker an took pictures an put the new one in the same position.

    dude, cool video, very informative. but do you have similar video for 1995 Tahoe 4L60E tranmission?

    • @Iroc_twan
      @Iroc_twan 2 роки тому

      It should be about the same way

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  2 роки тому +1

      The main difference is a few things in the valve body. Don't get a spacer plate for anything but a 1995. The 3-2 downshift solenoid is pulse width modulated and not on/off like on the later units. But for the most part, rebuilding it is the same.

    At 48:50 I noticéd you didn't replace thé vâlvé body Filtér Screen (s). Is this necessary to do or not required generally ????

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  2 роки тому

      I usually get a new plate because the check balls beat up the plate too much. The new plates have a gasket bonded to the plate and built in filters. But if I’m reusing a plate, I’ll put the new screens that come in the overhaul kit.
