I get really nice, older, well-kept, low-mile stuff. Who cares if it's 8 or 10 years old if it's super nice, has 40,000 miles, and cost me 10 or 15 grand? By that time, most factory recalls and warranty work and everything has been done and I can just drive it for 100,000 and still get a few bucks toward the next one out of it when I'm done with it.

The problem with “base” trucks is that they are equipped like a $20,000 vehicle but charge $40,000 for them. Either make the $40,000 “base” model have standard features/quality of a $40,000 or charge a more appropriate price aka $20,000 for these plastic city models.
The worst thing is consumers keep paying these ludicrous prices for under equipped trucks so dealers will keep charging these prices. Stop encouraging this type of pricing and they’ll start making these more sanely priced

That is what we mean when we say they cost too much as a truck like that is basically useless in cold climates like Canada ( I don't know why anyone would buy a new 2wd up here). The reason for the plastic steering wheel as opposed to vinyl or leather wrap is because the lower end trucks are expected to be work trucks. In work trucks, they are expected to get stained and be dirtier on the inside. The plastic steering wheel is much easier to get cleaned and at the same time, not stain. That is why more plastic is used in the work trucks. Same thing with the vinyl or rubber flooring.
I agree that the safety features should all be standard!

I mostly agree with you here, I have a 2007 F250 with this almost shiny plastic steering wheel, but the wheel just wipes clean every time. That said, why doesn't a work truck package come standard with towing mirrors, brake controller, and a washout interior with drain plugs? Why can't I get some sort of pickup truck with a dump body like the Polaris Ranger has? If they can do it on a side by side, why can't pickup trucks get a dump body option? From the safety side, why can't there be an option for upgraded safety that includes emergency braking, more airbags, lane keep assist, turning headlights that level and switch to high beam autmatically? As long as I can turn the features off if I don't like them, then put them on or offer them. My 2015 Volvo S160 with active headlights is amazing at night, where my 2015 F350 work trucks headlights are awful, both of these vehicles were in the same price bracket.

I have about 23,000 miles on mine since September of last year and I'm in lots of bad environments.. the steering wheel has been exposed and fine. I'll be sure to give another update once I hit 100k miles.
The upper trim steering wheel definitely didn't feel like leather. Felt like garbage to me. I hated it.
Of course, I'm probably in the minority, but I like to add things myself. I also don't like any of the safety features currently. So maybe in 10 years I'll consider it. It has nothing to do with if you can drive or not, I'm looking at cost down the road. Those sensors cost lots of money and they are not standardized. So regular panel replacement ends up costing a lot more if you get damage on the trail because of those sensors. So I'll pass for right now.

MSRP was 46k, down to 37k after incentives

For the dash, for most people, as long as you have a tach, spedometer, fuel and temperature gauge, and probably an oil pressure gauge, that's all you need in terms of gauges these days. You don't really even need voltmeter/battery guage in most cases unless you're running stuff off the truck (perhaps like plows or a lot of lights and need to monitor the voltage or the battery). I'd be OK with a spare cluster like that. It has all the necessary gauges that most people need.
