    Part one in our Honda Rancher 350 top end rebuild series begins with taking the motor apart. In the video, John will show you the Honda Rancher engine teardown piece by piece. Learn how to do a compression test on the Honda Rancher, which leads us into the disassembly of the engine after diagnosing a compression issue. We’ll remove the battery, fuel tank, and plastics in order to get to the engine where the real fun starts.
    John will walk you through removing the exhaust system, the valve cover, and then locating top dead center on the Rancher 350. Then, he’ll pull the engine apart to isolate the problem with the motor.

    Pro tip: before you tear it apart to see where you losing compression put a tablespoon of oil in the spark plug hole. If the compression increases your rings are worn. If it stays the same it's the valves.

    Mine started blowing smoke this past weekend on a out of town camping quad riding trip. It was getting so bad, oil was around on the outside of the muffle exit hole. Engine sounds ok still though. I haven’t rode it much in the last 5 years. I suspect after sitting a solid year then taking it riding putting it thru it’s paces, I’m thinking my rings are sticking. It’s a 2006 and I’m original owner since new. I don’t beat or mistreat my equipment.

    My rancher stopped running after being sluggish for weeks when it stopped it sounded like a rachet a few friends say it could be a Bent valve what do you think it is?

    If my rancher is tapping real bad from the top end and I've adjusted the valves and it's still still tapping would a top end rebuild be the next best move?

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  5 років тому

      If you can't get them to adjust, then a rebuild should solve the problem

    You said you had the cylinder bored out on this machine...can you have the cylinder bored on a 2006 Honda Recon 250? I know some cylinders are sleeved that’s why I’m asking.

    My four wheeler runs fine but it's leaking a little oil around the top end above the spark plug. Could it be a gasket needing replaced?

    • @PartzillaParts

      Make sure everything is tightened down. Otherwise, sounds like a gasket.

    Does this engine has hydraulic or solid valve lifters?

  • @marklamiss
    @marklamiss 6 років тому

    Hello Partzilla. How can a seized cylinder be removed from the piston and rings, without metal shavings falling into the crankcase? Would that even happen during removal? Or, will the lower end need to be disassembled for inspection anyway since the engine is seized? I'd appreciate anyones advice also. Thank you.

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 років тому +1

      In a seized up scenario, I would tear the motor down to parts. Then you can see what you need and rebuild the entire thing. There's a good chance you will need to do some cylinder work.

      does atv/motorcycle engine break in have to be done under a load while riding, or can it be done in neutral? i've seen videos done both ways.Thanks again

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 років тому

      Here is the best way to break in an engine. I'm sure everyone has their "expert" opinion all over the internet, but this is tried and true.
      On an ATV/Side x Side. 1st crank = idle 10 minutes check for leaks, listen carefully for abnormal noise, let cool.
      1st ride = 20 minutes vary load constantly up to 50% throttle, check everything again, let cool.
      2nd ride = 60 minutes vary load constantly up to 70% throttle let cool. Should be good to go at this point. Put some average miles (50) without getting too crazy. Then let it rip.
      On a motorcycle, I would double the ride time and mileage.

    • @marklamiss
      @marklamiss 6 років тому

      Yea i was hoping it could be done by varying the throttle in neutral. It would make it a lot easier. But i guess there needs to be a load. Thanks

    Hey partszilla I recently bought a 2002 Honda forman 450 4x4 and it's making a tapping sound on the valves and it was smoking out of the carburetor in to the intake box I readjusted the vavle gap to 6 thousands and it ran healthier had better compression however it's still tapping and smoking out the carburetor into the intake I doubt it's the Piston because it's not smoking out the pipe but what do you think? I would really appreciate your advice thanks

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 років тому

      Did you do the valves when the motor was warm?

    • @ramiroquintana6982
      @ramiroquintana6982 6 років тому +1

      Partzilla well that's how I bought it and I saw your video and decided to do it myself got a feeler gauge and when I looked at the valve cover it looked like it had already been adjusted before so I drove it into the garage maybe 1 minute at the most and popped open the cover yes it was a little warm then the valves had no slack to I re adjusted them to 6 thousands at top dead center and put everything back together and fired it up an it had better compression and everything sounded healthier but it was still tapping at the vavle area and smoking out of the carburetor at idle once you press the acceleration some the smoke goes away. Please advise on what you think I should do I'm looking into buying the gasket kit and 2 new valves and resurfacing the seating area like you did in this video but I would like to hear your advice before I do so thanks for getting back to me and hope to hear back from you

    Hey Partzilla I have a 250 recon and it was sitting up for about a year because of the carb and I just replaced it and the spark plug I checked the spark plug a couple days later and it's like a charcoal black color do you know what is happening in tje motor ALSO the bottom end sounds like a chain is rattling would that be the timing chain? LIKE I SAID IT STILL RUNS

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  5 років тому

      Too rich? Oil saturation? Could be cam chain tensioner.

    • @aaronpepper9838
      @aaronpepper9838 5 років тому

      Is that hard to change

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  5 років тому

      @@aaronpepper9838 Not sure if it changed in later years, but it should just be a couple bolts and remove the tensioner.

    • @aaronpepper9838
      @aaronpepper9838 5 років тому

      Ok thanks. One more question I heard It could be a burnt valve if it is could a do the paper trick? Where you put the paper to the exhaust

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  5 років тому

      By checking for suction? You can do a compression check. The paper test is not foolproof.
