The greatest guitar solo of it's time, it had everything, even Hendrix was mesmerised by Cream. The interesting thing about this solo is if you learn to play it, it will teach you everything you can do on a guitar (apart from tapping and whammy bar techniques). It will teach you double stops, double bends, slides, hammer ons, pull offs, vibrato etc. I also believe this is the most complete solo Clapton ever performed, it's melodic, intense, fast, accurate, and had every single thing in it Clapton knew how to do at the time.Tim pays a nice homage to Clapton at the end of the solo, but Claptons end solo is incredible!
Tim is the gold standard of guitar tutorials. Out of the gate, he draws you in with his seamless playing. Then he breaks it down, methodically, patiently; and with his infectious joy for playing.
It is is humble in his genius that works my heart and soul. Natural musicians like Lord Pierce were ALWAYS my heroes- because despite my serious conservatory and university music lessons- natural musicians like Lord Pierce and the love in their ears and hearts trumped my academic music training… amen.
Been playing guitar, (self taught) for 45+ yrs. Still enjoy playing. Always a Good day, or rather a Better day when I pick up something new that enhances my vocabulary. My vocabulary Most times is enhanced after watching one of Tim's UA-cam videos. Thanks a bunch Tim!
I got a totally different impression. When he smiles it looks to me like he’s really enjoying playing, not like “I know I’m badass” type smile. Who knows but him I guess
I think of all of the guitar solos over the years this solo, more than any, is a "must learn exactly like the record". It's that iconic and beloved and I'm sure you've more than done your part In helping people do that..thanks Tim !
Hi Tim I grew up with Clapton and have always been a big fan, but I have to say your solo was absolutely superb , and what I love is you can see by your face you are really enjoying yourself. You are truly a great player all the best to you from the UK!
This was the first song and solo I ever learned, and was back in 1986. The tablature arrived in a guitar player magazine and I just poured over it. I have forever been glad that I learned it, because everything else following wasn't too tough and paved the way for me to learn other player's guitar styles. After this song, I went deeply into Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and the three Kings.
Tim, I've been listening to you for a couple months now and I have to say, I believe you are probably the best guitar player I've ever seen, Ever.. Bar none. Your knowledge of the guitar is phenomenal and when you play, you sound Awesome!! Everything is spot on, timing wise and you put everything in the right place... I repeat, You are the best I've ever seen. You Are Awesome!!!
You sir are a giant. Wow what a wake up call. Really enjoyed that lesson. I am a 70 year old retired muso still kicking and doing gigs . And living the dream. U take care please don’t stop, regards martin
Is there a moment when you were learning guitar, that your teacher or someone pointed out something that you were doing wrong, like how you were holding your pick, etc..that changed everything? I watch these and of course say "wow" like 99.9% of everyone else, but watching you teach makes things not only attainable, but much less frustrating...live forever! eagerly awaiting any material from you! thanks millions! Rich...Detroit.
I've always looked for the nuances to this masterpiece of guitar and just found It. Being a life long hobbyists guitar player this is one I've strived to nail. Your lesson is the key for me. Much thanks!
Tim is just the best. So calm and mellow when explaining and giving alternatives on way making you believe in yourself that anything is possible. Having not played electric guitar for thirty years my plectrum skill has deserted me so I use right hand finger picking throughout. We do what we have to do!
Hahaha, Tim that was AWESOME! Your Clapton licks are great, but your own licks are even better. Love the one you did at 1:18, so smooth man! Your timing is so good it's crazy. Superb guitar playing. You're an inspiration! cheers
The guys in my band have asked to put this in the set, naturally the algorithm has brought my favourite session player up. I’ll never play it like Tim but this is certainly the best reference to learn from
The whole idea , “ in time and in tempo “ . Make it your own then swing it around. The whole idea. The most prophetic words I have heard in a long time.
Tim - You are the Best! I found you, or was made aware of your existence thanks to our friend Rick Beato. Thank you, RB! Man, every time I click on another video tutorial / Jam...damn fun...I am blown away! You Da man! Thx, MSL
It is a gift to be able to play so well. It is a gift to be able to teach well. You are one of the few great players who also is a great teacher. Thanks for the lesson!
Hey Tim, I enjoy watching you play stuff. Your easy on the ears, you seem to have it all ... Good phrasing, and most of all a modest positive attitude that is admirable.
Looking for a tutorial to learn to play Crossroads... see a Tim Pierce one (sweet)... click... then BAM! WOW!!!!! That solo. Haven't picked up the guitar yet, just keep listening to that intro over & over! Thank you for that stunning ear candy!
This is really an incredible tutorial! I like that you go into every small detail of the song without repeating everything again and again. Thank you very much!
This solo is Clapton greatest of all time..I saw David Hildago ,Los Lobos on New Years Eve at the Filmore West..do this note for note...a great time for all. Thanks for this post greatly appreciated.
Tim, that is literally my dream man cave. You are living the dream Tim. Making a living by playing the guitar must be one of the best feelings ever. I would wake up everyday thinking yes! I have work today. Keep on rocking Tim, I really appreciate your videos.
The best Example so far for me of this great song..I learned something here, I wished you lived next door Tim, I`d drop by everyday...Thanks so much for posting.
The original is a classic, and for it's time, altering. You play it so smoothly when you do it homage. When you start to improvise you retain the phrasing cadence a just kill it with your improvisation. Thank you for sharing.
That was always one of my favorite Clapton songs. Truly, with so many to choose from it's hard to pick one. Anyway, this guy nails it and I have a whole new appreciation for EC. Good job 👍
Love your style of playing and teaching! I get impatient (and confused) with every string, fret and finger numbers that some YT teachers recite for every darn note. Just watching you play, with the way you break it down, is perfect for me. Thanks again.
This is a great lesson in that it provides tons of jump off points for building your own solo. I find this lesson - and your lessons in general great for providing a foundation or reference point to fall back on when creating my own licks. If I can't master a certain lick, I work something else out using this as a sort of home base if you will. Just awesome - thanks for posting these lessons!
Okay Tim, my guitar's in pieces having been thrown out the window, so what's next? I would run out of superlatives describing your demonstration of how to out Clapton the big 'E' but the greatest compliment I could give is how you really put yourself and joy into playing. There is a sublime love in there for what you do and that's what separates you from we lesser mortals who have enough problems simply getting the notes right never mind putting those subtle bends and beautiful, expressive tonality in with but a thought. The smile as you come down that blinding half blues, half country run before flying back up to the 12th fret is worth a thousand words. Thank you for being who you are. I have taken the liberty of looping your piece 4 times into a 6 minute track if that's okay although without the smile it isn't quite the same! Put that on a CD and I'd buy it like a shot. The sheer exuberance of your playing is a wonder to behold and an inspiration to so many. Thank you for being who you are.
Tim, you play with such skill and pleasure it makes me feel the electric guitar is the best thing humankind has ever invented. (Well, in fact it is) You rule! Now I think I have to do some (a lot of) practice...
Fantastic solo, Tim! BTW, the backing track was/is amazing, as a bass player, I have always admired Jack Bruce’s powerful work on “Crossroads”, all over the fretboard and rock-solid tempo… whoever played the bass on your backup track absolutely nailed that!
U r really such a good teacher and player! Few are able to be both at the same time, but you are definitely one of the exceptions! I love all your session work! Thank you for being such an inspiration and motivation! Greetings from Singapore!
Love just listening to you play Tim, the lessons are great and I love learning them but sometimes it's just so cool just watching you play, you look like you are have so much fun and you play so naturally, it's so great. Thanks for what you do for us all Tim! -buddy
I would love to see you break down Clapton’s guitar introduction on Cream’s live “sitting on top of the world” and Jeff Beck’s solo in “rock my plimsoul.“ You are my favorite online instructor!
Thanks for breaking Clapton's riff into simpler pieces, Tim! You make it seem so easy...an old hacker with 10 thumbs appreciates your infinite patience and technical insight.
Before I knew it, you have become one of my guitar heroes as well as clapton!! and I have been watching you from Japan almost everyday!! thank you Tim!!
I’m kind of a Hendrix disciple but I know how much Jimi loved EC. Having listened more to Clapton recently I have realized just why they once wrote “Clapton is God.” This is certainly excellent musicianship and it happens to be my favorite Cream/Clapton song to play.
basic stuff here with Clapton not Tim .Tim plays it better than clapton . Page Hendrix Beck ..Eric is not even the top 5. even he knew that , that god stuff was embarrassing for him. enjoy the music .

I came to this video to learn that second part of the intro. But I keep coming back to hear you rip that solo. I love it. Seriuosly so good. Hypes me up to play my sunburst ES too!

Just great work!
Wow! What a GREAT player! This is my first exposure to one of your lessons. Your ability to break things down into understandable chunks is incredible! It would be easy to get completely LOST while trying to learn these licks, but you provide immediate clarity - and in such a concise manner. I'll be checking out more of your lessons soon. Thank you so much!
Once again, you hit it out of the ballpark with this lesson, Tim! This is about as awesome as guitar lessons get - and by far the best lesson on Crossroads. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Now for the "please, please, please!": Could you do a lesson on "Rollin' & Tumblin" / "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day" in the style of Eric Clapton/Cream?
Great playing! This helped me to find some missing licks. Just to add on what I'm hearing which your instruction helped me find....The lick at 8:55: instead of the A anchor note use F# (4th fret on D string). F# A-F#-A C A D C A(pull off) C-C# (Hammer on) C#-A. I'm hearing a major phrasing in the beginning of that phrase and end. I think it's the F# before the A and a hammer on to the C# to end it but maybe it's in my head! Cheers!
Hey Tim! I really enjoy your videos. Thank you! I am actually a drummer that's played for 30+ years and learning guitar and bass to eventually record my own stuff and I have learned so much from your tutorials. Thanks again. Cheers!

The weird thing is that Clapton didn’t like it. He said he screwed up the timing a couple of times. I agree with you though!
Actually Clapton was mesmerized by Jimi. Never the other way around. All pentatonic.ala 90% of Clapton.
