Tim's amazing for how he plays and what he shares. On top of being an amazing musician he's so darn likable and transparent. I can see why someone would be overwhelmed by how good he is and how masterfully he plays. It can be intimidating.
Possibly they either A) knew everything and simply cannot learn more because they're awesome gods of the guitar or B) simply couldn't fathom the content and dismissed it as "I don't need this, I'm awesome" or C) thought that the video was too long and thought "give me the 10 tips already..."
I don't know what it is about Tim... He plays so clean. Every note he frets and string he hits is clear to the eye and the ear. He's a genius on the guitar, but watching him play and hearing his instruction, makes me think I can actually be as good as him, and he speaks to us like he believes we can too. Tim is like a Merlin figure. He was hidden yet always there, metaphorically waiting for the day we matured enough to appreciate his wisdom and the lessons of his exploits. I can't deny that my playing and attitude towards playing have changed for the better. I ultimately did it although, you more than helped to reignite that fire and sense of wonder I felt when I first held a guitar. For that you have my gratitude, my thanks and my undivided attention anytime I see a Tim Pierce Guitar video lol. I see how awesome you are not just as a musician, but as my fellow Man. The reason I like this channel is this guy isn't trying to show people how to play like Malmsteen or Gambele. He's simply trying to show guitarists how to be useful and how to be capable. Thats what sets him apart and thats why I view him as valuable.

I've been working in studios and on stages for over 40 years and I'm astonished to find out how little I know about the mechanics of playing the guitar, the the science of what makes a great rhythm part great and a thousand more aspects of my job that are described in beautiful detail in every video clip Tim Pierce bequeathes us. I'll walk away from this lesson and be cognizant of muting strings more so than I ever have before. Thanks so much for your always thoughtful and concise manner of teaching, Tim. 39 years of playing for me and I can tell you this is golden advice to any gigging player -- all meat, no fluff. If you thumb down this you should immediately go sell all your gear and get an accordion. Plain & simple.

I really enjoyed this Tim, thank you. I am 70 years old, started playing guitar at age 10. To begin with I was self taught using instruction books, so I learned the old style barre chord method using the index finger to clamp across all the strings. Like yourself, I only had 45's and a record player to somehow try to apply the chord charts As you demonstrate, the only way to do this comfortably is to wear the guitar high up on the chest....not so cool as those low slung rockers of the 60's and today. It is what it is, like you I have smaller hands and one has to learn how to compensate. I took lessons for many years once I got hooked on the instrument. I am a lifer on guitar, my first paid gig was at 18...I am still gigging as I write this. So once again Tim, my thanks for all that you do.
From the first notes I heard you play...which was on a Rick Beato feature...my immediate impression was that I had never heard a player of ANY instrument play with such confidence and precision. This presentation goes a long way toward showing HOW you do it. Really amazing.

Great information simply presented! I am forever telling people “play in time, and vary your dynamics”. They don’t always do it, but at least they get the idea. When I tell people that I play every note hard, especially the soft ones, I get blank looks. I am going to steal your excellent explanation. Which is appropriate, as I’ve stolen every every guitar idea I’ve ever had.
You have without a doubt become my favorite guitarist after discovering you this past year and your ability to teach is light years above most. Every video is just such an enjoyable experience even if you're not teaching something. But this last month I started watching 1 new video of yours every night and then REALLY spending hours absorbing what you're throwing down and focusing on the finer aspects of your playing. Needless to say my playing has advanced light years and my vibrato has gone from being a randomish accent at times to developing into a fully musical expression where every nuance matters every time. Maaaaaan, I love these videos. There's not many musicians akin to Tom Pierce that give information as insightful and time tested away, for free, to whomever is looking for it. Respect.
Playing always with sincere feeling and locking into the drummer is how I've been playing for decades. It's satisfying to hear you, such an accomplished musician, corroborate that this is something we ought to do. I remember before I understood about muting and was so frustrated with how "dirty" my sound was. I just practiced and practiced to make it better(there were no YT vids or any kind of professional instruction for rock electric guitar in those days) until I think I accidentally muted a string, and lo and behold, it didn't ring out and the note I wanted to play was clean. Halleluya! That medium/slow tempo pocket playing is what the Rolling Stones are all about. They have a symbiotic sense of each other when it comes to groove, tempo, and such. Many years ago I realized that I might prevent carpal tunnel and that kind of thing if my wrist was not bent too much when I played. I ended up shortening my strap and raising my guitar to my chest. Sure enough, my wrist was much flatter in all positions. The other guitarist in my band played his guitar at his waist and was having wrist problems. He saw what I was doing, asked me why, and then did the same. It really works. Thanks, Tim for a great, informative vid, one of the best I've seen. Cheers, mate.

Well my fingers are cut and bleeding so break time. You make me want to play more. Guys listen he is spot on. Wisdom and he is shareing secrets that take decades.

Amazing tips, Tim! I especially love how you focused so much on locking in with the snare and string muting. I do a lot of high gain and fuzz stuff with presets changing for each song, so muting is essential. Keep up the good work!
Man what a wonderful , valuable, video, so much great information, you talk about things Ive never heard anybody address before, when your standing in front of two Marshall stacks there is a lot of physical, not playing but controlling the beast behind you, muting, volume control, and as you said not letting any of the other sounds the guitar makes getting through unless you want them too. I love your playing and style, I have gained another guitarist that I will learn from, I've been playing for close to 40 years but its never to late to learn from a great player!! Thank you! That PRS is a beauty! I have a 20’th anniversary McCarty and as far as guitars go it’s the most wonderful thing ever. Today, i’ve got some older American Strats, a Strat Elite, a couple custom made guitars, and a 1999 LP Standard. PRS outclasses all of them. I love them all but it’s literally my go to and the one I know without question it’s the guitar that will never go out of tune, it’s intonation is rock solid everywhere on the neck and the tonal possibilities go for days and days. I’ve always seen you playing mostly a (looks to be) custom made Strat. I’m really excited about the PRS lol. I hope a million people buy one now because they heard and saw you playing one:). Your lessons are amazing and very helpful to me. Thank you for this

Nice tips about all the subtle stuff no one really talks about. Just today I came back to some slide work and really took notice of using my right hand to muffle my picking between notes. The technique allowed me to focus on position changes with the slide without the changes in fret position becoming an unwanted artifact. I guess I'm always learning, just got to be mindful of what I'm doing and how to achieve what I want.
You're such a pleasant man! Can I put you in my pocket and carry you around with me through my day. It's REALLY hard to stay crabby when you're around that type of positive energy.

I watched this video over a year ago. Turns out Tim was right about using parts of the flesh from your strum hand to mute the unintended strings. After a year, now I do it unconsciously. Now I'm more precise with the notes I'm picking. Now it's second nature. Thanks, Tim!!

As a 54-yr old who is an "advanced " beginner, I don't even know why I watched this entire video. Maybe just to see what really playing the guitar looks like.
I hear you! I watch this stuff in the hope that eventually some fragment will be absorbed to return should I get to a point where I can make use of it. That, and I enjoy watching someone who knows what they are doing doing it. Like Johnny Marr's lesson for Fender on the Headmaster Ritual. No amount of watching that video is going to teach me to play it like Marr - but geeze it's fun to watch and try!
Muting really is such a big deal. Maybe one of the big surprises for beginners learning guitar is that you constantly have to deal with what you don't play as well as what you play.
Rule number one is SO GOOD, so true... especially bending strings.. I notice beginning students bend notes wimpy.. it's like the trademark of a novice. Bend those notes like your life depends on it.. no wimpy bends, I always think about your rules when onstage,in a session,making videos.. u rule,thx

I’m an upper intermediate player for over 40 years. I’ve played some sessions and toured minimally over that period. Tim’s videos are foundational at any level of playing. You young guns, lay the guitar down for a few minutes and listen to a well seasoned pro and LEARN! Thanks Tim

To a fair extent, how right that comment is. I use mainly .30mm rubber picks and the sweet can be sweet and natural.

Playing always with sincere feeling and locking into the drummer is how I've been playing for decades. It's satisfying to hear you, such an accomplished musician, corroborate that this is something we ought to do.
I remember before I understood about muting and was so frustrated with how "dirty" my sound was. I just practiced and practiced to make it better(there were no YT vids or any kind of professional instruction for rock electric guitar in those days) until I think I accidentally muted a string, and lo and behold, it didn't ring out and the note I wanted to play was clean. Halleluya!
That medium/slow tempo pocket playing is what the Rolling Stones are all about. They have a symbiotic sense of each other when it comes to groove, tempo, and such.
Many years ago I realized that I might prevent carpal tunnel and that kind of thing if my wrist was not bent too much when I played. I ended up shortening my strap and raising my guitar to my chest. Sure enough, my wrist was much flatter in all positions. The other guitarist in my band played his guitar at his waist and was having wrist problems. He saw what I was doing, asked me why, and then did the same. It really works.

@@timpierceguitar I'm laying in bed watching. Today I broke 4 strings so that wiped me out. Lucky I have 3 or 4 guitars strung up. New strings be her 2 days. Well my fingers are cut and bleeding so break time. You make me want to play more. Guys listen he is spot on. Wisdom and he is shareing secrets that take decades.
I just came across this video a second time (4 years later) and it really spoke to me this time - I was ready for it - 4 years ago not so much.

Amazing tips, Tim! I especially love how you focused so much on locking in with the snare and string muting. I do a lot of high gain and fuzz stuff with presets changing for each song, so muting is essential. Keep up the good work!

there is a lot of physical, not playing but controlling the beast behind you, muting, volume control, and as you said not letting any of the other sounds the guitar makes getting through unless you want them too.
I love your playing and style, I have gained another guitarist that I will learn from, I've been playing for close to 40 years but its never to late to learn from a great player!! Thank you!

That PRS is a beauty! I have a 20’th anniversary McCarty and as far as guitars go it’s the most wonderful thing ever. Today, i’ve got some older American Strats, a Strat Elite, a couple custom made guitars, and a 1999 LP Standard. PRS outclasses all of them. I love them all but it’s literally my go to and the one I know without question it’s the guitar that will never go out of tune, it’s intonation is rock solid everywhere on the neck and the tonal possibilities go for days and days. I’ve always seen you playing mostly a (looks to be) custom made Strat. I’m really excited about the PRS lol. I hope a million people buy one now because they heard and saw you playing one:). Your lessons are amazing and very helpful to me. Thank you for this

Nice tips about all the subtle stuff no one really talks about. Just today I came back to some slide work and really took notice of using my right hand to muffle my picking between notes. The technique allowed me to focus on position changes with the slide without the changes in fret position becoming an unwanted artifact. I guess I'm always learning, just got to be mindful of what I'm doing and how to achieve what I want.

I watched this video over a year ago. Turns out Tim was right about using parts of the flesh from your strum hand to mute the unintended strings. After a year, now I do it unconsciously. Now I'm more precise with the notes I'm picking. Now it's second nature. Thanks, Tim!!

Muting really is such a big deal. Maybe one of the big surprises for beginners learning guitar is that you constantly have to deal with what you don't play as well as what you play.
Rule number one is SO GOOD, so true... especially bending strings.. I notice beginning students bend notes wimpy.. it's like the trademark of a novice.
Bend those notes like your life depends on it.. no wimpy bends, I always think about your rules when onstage,in a session,making videos.. u rule,thx
