Wow, awesome, what a great description, immediately get the idea. -- "our American David Gilmour" -- And yes, Felder is The Man, I not so good at descriptions. Thanks.
It’s amazing to hear him play his own piece of music in this setting. After so many millions of cover videos and examples, you can clearly hear how different he TRULY plays it. This was awesome.
It's not so much how he plays it, it has everything to do with how he set up his 59 Les Paul. Frey and Henley tried a few times to make Hotel sound different from a stupid brass section, different intro's, etc. You can tell Felder being removed from the Eagles changed the way Hotel is heard. By the way, Joe Walsh being brought into the band also changed the Eagles from being a country bumpkin yahoo band, to a multi-sounding band.
I have copies of Hotel sheet music. The one is a guitar magazine from back in the day. The by line reads. Felder, Henley, Frey. The Hotel off the record book reads. Frey, Felder, Henley. The Classic Eagles book reads. Henley, Frey, Felder. The Hell Freezes Over book reads. Henley, Frey, Felder. The Very Best of the Eagles reads. Henley, Frey, Felder. This is why I don't care about Henley and Frey. They want to take credit over everyone who writes a song. Pretty soon I expect Felders name to be removed completly from Hotel California.
I bought that album in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1976. I was overwhelmed with the incredible talent on all of the songs. Felder is the Rembrandt of guitarists! I wore out my ears and my stereo listening to it. Everything about that song is clever. Chords, leads, lyrics, and tone. The producer that threw Joe Walsh into the band was a complete genius!
The amazing thing is Don hears this in his head, and then is able to put those sounds into notes, chords, riffs, and a brilliant melody. One of the best songs ever written. Thanks so much for your contribution to the Eagles. They wouldn't have been as good without you! And thanks for this video too.

@@sammykogen3305 Hey thanks for the laugh, man. As someone who's been playing guitar since 1964, and been in a few bands, your comment really cracked me up!
Just when I thought I could feel every emotion in Dons music, he plays it in “super slow motion” and his sound reaches deep into my soul like nothing ever has before! Thanks Don! Saw you in 96 in Vancouver. I will never go to another E concert. The soul has left!💕
I use to love watching Don and Joe play together. It looked like they were good friends, had a great deal of respect for each other and were just really having a good time! I really missed that when Don left the group.
Don is in my opinion one of the most under appreciated guitar masters , it's to bad Glenn and Henley didn't appreciate his talents and his contributions to the band, Felder will always be one of the Eagles to me , it's hard to be in a band with so much talent and egos are easily bruised when you don't appreciate each other
Wow... so much in this song guitar-wise. You hear it in the full band version but to see Don break it down with the basic chord changes and solo, it's a whole other level of appreciation. This is master work, composition and guitar play.
O M G Don Felder, You are excellent and amazing. The Eagles were crazy for losing you. You are the man. and an amazing guitarist. I love all your music thanks again 🙂
Wow. People who don’t play guitar watch this and think “I should learn to play guitar - it will be really cool.” People who play guitar and watch this think the opposite. Awesome video. Thank you.
Um, I’m kinda with Bike Life here. With the exception of a one-off mention by Rick Beato, no one talks about this guy or any of the Eagles online. Although I’m guessing that has to do with how aggressively the Eagles attack anyone who puts any amount of their songs online… It’s hard to talk about the Eagles when the Eagles silence anyone who talks about the Eagles.
This is great. 40 years ago, who would have thought that Felder would be showing us this stuff. Guitar magazines came around and tabbed out the notes, but none of us thought that this dude (or any other dude, for that matter) would show us how they did something 40 years earlier that we can watch or choose not to watch.
Well I’ll tell you my brother and I played the solos note by note ( my brother ear is exceptional ), but you are absolutely right, who would have thought it, this would save us a couple of weeks of intense work.
@@pedrodiaz5540 🤣 Right! I’ve been limping around with a half way decent take for years but all his style and detail are clear to see now. Tell your brother good job if he did nail this one 👍
I will be 75 in 3 weeks and am still learning to better my guitar playing skills. This song is from 70’s yet sounds so fresh and Don’s masterful playing continues to inspire me to learn more. Eagles music does not exist without Don and his creativity. Thank you for sharing this video… I am thankful for finding it today…
Can you imagine taking guitar lessons from this man in Gainesville Florida as Tom Petty once did? He’s a fantastic teacher explaining in simple terms how he achieved the complexities of his playing.
It's a shame Tom Petty didn't learn more from him. Dale, Tom's guitarist sometimes sounds similar. And I like Petty, but , to me Petty often sounds hollow or lacking( as in good but not great).. Should have combined talents of Eagles with CSNY. Just thoughts
Well, just because Picasso can paint does not mean Pablo can teach. Yes, bragging rights would be amazing but just saying. Some of my worse lessons were with talented players with massive ego. They know how to play but they don't really understand what or how they are doing it. They have muscle memory and a great ear. On paper, they were all thumbs. Some of the best instructors, played ok but they knew the theory inside and out. They gave me the tools to take it from there. Like a roadmap- it's all I needed.
Don Felder is one of the reasons I wanted to play guitar in the first place - I wanted to be the singer and play the solos - Thanks for the inspiration , Mr Felder
The fact he actually explains the music theory behind the song and the solo really illustrates what a master of his craft he is. Phenomenal guitarist and musician.
@@Clambelly that’s how you learn if you only want to play Hotel California one way. This guy is teaching how it should be, the best part about playing guitar is being able to play the same songs all over the neck in different ways!
@@Quaminator15 Don Felder explains why the key was changed. Anyone who has a basic understanding of music knows there are different keys and learns how to transpose. This may seem like something new and fascinating to persons who know nothing about music, but is so fundamental to be less than interesting to me. Sorry, but I am not impressed, because "this guy" Don Felder is a world known recording artist, Hall of Famer, I would have expected something more. Kind of like listening to Tom Clancy explain that sentences are made of words, and paragraphs are made of sentences ... and I am sorry, but I expected more.
@@Clambelly if you have such a deep knowledge of music to not be impressed by fundamentals, you should already know not to expect more from famous musicians and bands! Lots of bands like the Eagles have made much more money and fame using even more basic music than this.

It's one of those amazingly simple solos which require a shedload of skill and technique so don't be too hard on yourself way back then - no internet and youtube to teach us the tricks. Been playing 40+ years and only now with this video will I actually learn to play it correct haha 😂
Wish I saw this and many other songs back in the 1980's when I was destroying LP 33 and 1/3 records by constantly lifting the needle and putting it back 10, 20, and 30 seconds.....
Don Felder is all class. His guitar playing is so deliberate and clean. What a great sound. With every note he played I could hear all the other instruments in my mind.

Keep playing, you’re one of the best ever and Eagles will never be the same without you. Their fans know. I know. You know. Don knows. Glenn knew.
Thanks for uploading. And thanks to Don for this pristine demo on his song. Arguably, the most exquisite guitar melody & solo written in the 1970's, or in Modern "Rock" music, up there head to head with any other song. Bravo 👏
What a master class in how to construct and play a guitar solo - pay particular attention to those crucial bends and accompanying vibrato! That Chet Atkins-inspired intro completes this masterpiece. When you compare what The Eagles & compatriots produced 'back in the day' with the quality and 'musical truthfulness' of today, you can only despair.
What beautiful, accurate and precise flat-picking that never misses those bass notes. I have heard this so many times but seeing how YOU play it, makes it completely new for me. Cheers!
Truly brilliant and he and Joe compliment each other’s playing! Especially on Hotel California! Tom Petty was most fortunate to have received guitar lessons from Don! It certainly served him well! Brilliant song structure on this one, and perfect flow from note to note! His bends and slides are impressive and with perfect pitch and timing! Chord progressions are beautifully arranged and it sounds great in A and B minor! Bravo! Thank you Don! Go Gators!😉👌😎
Felder mentions Chet Atkins in this video. Chet was one of the most brilliant guitar players the world has ever known and inspired dozens of future greats. He was the first player who could make you believe you were either listening to two guitars at once or listening to one man with 15 fingers.

Hello 👋 Katina. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
I heard so many UA-cam covers, but Don Felder is still the Gold standard, not just because he is the creator, but because he has perfect precision of tone and bends, as well as feel for the solo and the end part. He is also as consistent as a machine.

Just absolutely brilliant. One of my fav chord progressions, one of my favorite progression voicings, one of my fav guitar solos. Just so amazing to see this.
Why is this song so amazing and why does it resonate with so many people? It moves, it grooves, it’s crisp, it’s expressive. It tells a story that we all can relate to with sound. Mastercraft.
Eagles best group ever, and Don you’re a big reason why! If not for you the greatest Eagle’s song wouldn’t have been one of the Eagles. Don, I try to watch all your work I can, you’re such a humble man and that impress’s me. Talented and a great guy!
Don's love of music and playing guitar, really shines through in his live performances.. either as a solo artist or when he was with the Eagles. The way he plays this solo and the version of "I can't tell you why" on the "Hell freezes over" DVD, absolutely gives me chills..i can feel it in my heart. it's like he's making love to the guitar.. I hate the crap he had to go through all those years.. but he sure gave us some amazing music to listen to though!
This is so cool. Back in the day, you could always kind of hack your way through, but something was always missing - there was so much going on sonically that you couldn't separate it out. It's crazy to think that now we have the actual composer of the song showing the world how to play it note by note for free. Oh, also we are apparently in another cold war with Russia, but it really just adds to the nostalgia.
I tell you what. When they say a smell, a sound or sight can take you back to a distant memory, this is 100% that. I grew up in a small town and one of the few things to do as kid during summer in the early 90's was to go to the pool hall and play some pool as well as there being a big arcade. The guy that owned it was an older italian pro that was the nicest guy ever and had a jukebox in the corner that played this song like every couple hours. Every time to this day 30 some odd years later, I still think of that every time I hear this song.
Always amazed me that Henley and Frey tried to downplay Felders contributions to the band, when in fact, his addition to the band is what took them from a country rock band to a certified super group. This song alone is responsible for most of that, and Felder alone is responsible for most of this song.
felder wrote a chord progression, that is simply no where near being responsible for "most" of this song. if you have ever written a song a chord progression may be 10% of it, and that's being generous
@@danielteri5674 Felder is actually responsible for the majority of the songs musical structure. Walsh riffed off of Felders opening solo ( and did an excellent job ) and Henley wrote the fantastic lyrics. But to discount Felders contribution as nothing more than a simple chord progression is dishonest. This song could stand alone as an instrumental piece of music. Felders addition to the band changed the entire trajectory into the stratosphere of supergroup. The single Hotel California is by far the most important song on their most important album.
Where did you hear that b.s.? “Chord progression”? He recorded a demo of the entire song, including the melody and multi-tracked funky reggae rhythm with the exact outro-solo (improvised) which Henley and Frey made him recreate note-for-note in the final recording. He didn’t write the lyrics. He didn’t sing lead. He didn’t play drums or bass. But everything else (the “10%” as you call it 🤣) is Felder. “Chord progression”! 🤣🤣
@@davidmccain7662 lol songwriters get remembered, Felder didn't write the songs he wrote some chords one time. He literally uses pitch correction during his live shows and can't even play the song in the recorded key.
I never noticed before, but conceptually (and musically), his approach to this solo and the resulting sound reminds me of Larry Carlton’s Kid Charlemagne solo. They both are original, avoid cliche throwaway rock riffs and are both melodic and closely follow the underlying chord progression closely by relying on chord tones as nice anchors. Really good stuff!
Both of those examples demonstrate what a great guitar solo should be; a song within a song. Play something different than the melody without straying too far from it, then resolve it at the end. Cliche' pentatonic rock riffs are a dime a dozen and can be heard in a million rock and roll songs. It takes a true master of the instrument to do it right. Good points!
To me, this is the best rock song of all time. Pure pleasure from the guitar sounds, even without the lyrics. I have no idea how Don Felder came up with this complex sequence of notes that sound so good together. First heard it in my dorm at Rutgers in the spring of my sophomore year. Everyone loved it.
Don gives lots of credit to any of the other band members that did add to the song. Don is humble for being such a guitar legend for so long. He was teaching some of the great guitarists and players long long ago in Gainesville. Go jam Heavy Metal of his.
I must have heard this track a thousand times, but watching him break down the solo showed me how little I actually knew. Don is just an amazing talent, and the Eagles would be Parrots without him.

This is what a professional musician dedicated to his craft sounds like. Influenced by the greats, soloing based on the chord changes, bending up or down to leading tone, etc. A genius explains his technique to create an iconic song/solo. Wow. Thank you, Sir.
I LOVE Don Felder’s playing and he’s one of the very few that I have been listening to in the past year because I needed some inspiration with my own playing. I have cerebral palsy and suddenly couldn’t even grip the neck of a guitar. Turned out nothing serious was wrong and I still wanted to play so I decided that maybe I was struggling a lot and went back to playing guitar right handled after eight years of playing guitar as a lefty by starting from the beginning. I watched a lot of Don Felder and a lot of Eddie Van Halen as well . Why? I’ve always liked them and if you notice, they smiled a lot when they were playing guitar. It was my motivation to keep going. Long story short, I’m never going to be a perfect guitarist but I’m doing things with a guitar that I never thought I would be able to do and I’m grateful for players that are able to show you what they do. I noticed something. The tablature for the outro will get you there, but if you watch Don, the tablature is somewhat backwards for the ending of the riff.
I’m glad you are able to play with CP I have a good friend that has that as well but he is not a guitarist but I really appreciate that you have not let it stop you from enjoying it!
Just a Masterpiece! Thank you Don, I just love the song and the vid of the Eagles live with you and Joe on lead, playing and having fun talking in each others ear. Again thank you!
@ they charged enough in the 1990s, that was painful. The only thing that took the sting out of it was how much I paid for 2 tix to see Zeppelin in London in 2007 (not including round trip tickets from LA, 10 days hotel, etc), but worth every penny.
Your technical ability combined with your choice of melody makes this song what it is. The greatest rock song of all time bar none. The EGOS will never take that from you. Your musicianship inspires us all.
So many people turning 62 in the comments below. I'm 72 and feel like the grandpa here! I lived through the early years of the Eagles and all the rest. I was playing Gilmour from the time he joined Pink Floyd (e.g. Careful with that Axe Eugene era). The great thing about the Eagles is their penchant for "following the chords" with their solos as Don mentions in this video. They've always done that, but Felder and Walsh took that to new heights: The passionate blues/rock inflections replaced country twang. This song blows them all out of the guitar-water. Thank you Don Felder, for having the courage to put yourself out there in this electronic, Hotel California paradigm! ...g

I'm stunned beyond belief by not only his playing of this incredible piece, but his CREATING it. He is second to none. Love you, Don.

My opinion one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded and each of them has essentially their own solos that meld to harmony as well as their voices do!
Free bird solo a CLOSE 2nd!

I'm actually a little shocked that there aren't any comments saying, "You're playing it wrong".

Those that say that should be forced to listen to him play it alongside the video of him playing it in 77

Incredible song and solo that still sounds fresh today. Way ahead of its time!
Felder is an unquestionable guitar virtuoso and one of the best to ever wield the instrument. What a beautiful song that has and will continue to stand the test of time. Felder and Walsh, incredible together. Both complimented each other so well.

If they take down this piece of our American history then what would that say about them who hold that power

@@Quaminator15 Don Felder explains why the key was changed. Anyone who has a basic understanding of music knows there are different keys and learns how to transpose.
Right! What a time to be alive! I started to play before the internet. It really sucked.
Felder AND Walsh! Agreed!
felder wrote a chord progression, that is simply no where near being responsible for "most" of this song. if you have ever written a song a chord progression may be 10% of it, and that's being generous
I think he sounds like gilmour sometimes in that solo
To me, this is the best rock song of all time. Pure pleasure from the guitar sounds, even without the lyrics. I have no idea how Don Felder came up with this complex sequence of notes that sound so good together. First heard it in my dorm at Rutgers in the spring of my sophomore year. Everyone loved it.

Thanks, Jim! I’m lucky that I have a lot of abilities that a lot of people with cerebral palsy don’t have and I don’t take it for granted!
Just a Masterpiece! Thank you Don, I just love the song and the vid of the Eagles live with you and Joe on lead, playing and having fun talking in each others ear. Again thank you!

Be thankful they aren't still trying to charge you for seeing them years ago. F the Eagles. Done like dinner.

Thank you Don Felder, for having the courage to put yourself out there in this electronic, Hotel California paradigm! ...g
