This Free Online Guitar Lesson is La Grange with ZZ Top.
ZZ Top and Billy Gibbons were huge influences on me. I discovered them when "Rio Grande Mud" came out and I was just starting to play guitar in 1970.
I got to see them support that record at a concert in Albuquerque New Mexico. It was just the band and their Marshall stacks, which, if I remember correctly were renamed "Rio Grande" amps, and outfitted with steer horns.

Tim...Seeing a new lesson from you is like finding a 100 dollar bill on the sidewalk. Fantastic!!
Josh P Happy you like it.... Thanks Josh! #la-grange #zz-top
Bro $100 bill?
More like stashed of hundred bills..Tim is the most precise teacher there is.
Couldn't have said it better! So glad to find this
Hahaha, thanks, that brought just as much of smile to my face as the video!
100%❤❤️🎸🏆📝🫡☮️ I’ve been playing guitar off and on for over five decades. Tim helps me understand the breakdown of tunes as well his powerhouse of wisdom from recording on over one thousand top musical records. He’s a natural down to earth instructional player . I’ve never seen anyone else teaching and working hard for his UA-cam channel will doing gigs. I’m learning so much about all the variables like , guitar strings , picks . Simplicity. pedals and the smart way to play and learn to,have fun … ❤️🎸🎸🎸
Most under rated guitarist ever..Ive been playing for many years and come from guitar royalty and I can professionally say that Tim is absolutely one of the greats to go down in history!!!
Forgive me for asking but Cropper as in the legendary Steve? He's absolutely one of my guitar heroes! Also Tim is amazing isn't he?
You're the best Tim. Spent hours in the mid 70's with my 74 strat and my turntable moving the needle back hundreds of times to try to learn that song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love youtube.
WKD GOT to be an Ol' Timer , " ... needle back hundreds of times ... " , couple more tokes & it all started soundin' good
It’s nice to see the first three phrases being taught correctly for a change…it surprises me how few people even hear that on the recording…and what a solo!😊
You've either got it or you haven't and 'Tim' has always had it, and then some. A true axe legend.
Just watched a few other people's cover of this. Pretty good. Then I watched Tim's cover. HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!
Ok, that does it. Forget Clapton, Tim Pierce is (Guitar) God.
I love how much joy you express when playing Tim...
The best part about your teaching style is the enthusiasm you put into each lesson. It's obvious your psyched to pick up your and jam out these songs for us. Ty you are a great teacher.
Tim you are a truly awesome player, even if I did not learn a thing I could listen to your playing all day long. You are doing a lot of people a great service by teaching these skills.
THIS guy is THE MAN! I played bass guitar, professionally, in Austin, for over twenty-five years. In my retirement, I've bought a guitar and drum set, and set up a front room recording studio, just for the fun of it. Nobody on You Tube comes close to Tim when it comes to showing you how to play the classic Rock and Roll/Blues guitar hits I grew up with and played bass guitar on, in my band. You can't do better than learn from this guy. My recorded version of La Grange has my friends saying, "Get out, that's not you. You lifted that off the original and then overlayed your own stuff." Nope! Thanks, Tim!
I'm going down the ZZTop rabbit hole on UA-cam, and I'm 7 years late to this lesson, but WOW...this is Tim-TASTIC! Great lesson! I've been covering and playing this song wrong for years!!
This is one of the greatest numbers of all time in my book! I am not surprised you totally tear it apart man! I will try to pick up some of it here. I will be watching this a number of times and even if I can't quite get it, it will still be fun to try! Thanks for sharing your amazing skills with us wanna-be's!!!
Tim, you're doing a killer job of showing folks how to play these awesome songs. Please keep it up! Very inspiring and much appreciated!
trevestor Thanks Trevestor! #la-grange #zz-top
That guitar fell from heaven 😇😇😇😇💥🙏😁🤩🎸
Absolutely excellent lesson. How guitar teaching should be. Thank you
Maaaaaaan! You just blew my mind. This is superb!
That improv solo melted my face...the tastiest Thing I’ve heard in a long time.
By the way you’re an amazing teacher
Never cease to amaze me with your versatility amazing technique. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and expertise.
Nice work Tim! You nailed this on the head. Thanks for covering the nuances and not just the notes.
Steve Fiorito Glad you like it thanks Steve! #la-grange
I don't know who would give this a thumbs down, that was fantastic!
A tone deaf twit would, thats who.
Brilliant player and phenomenal teacher….what’s not to love?
Wow! The first solo of the video ... Just wow! Very clean, very entertaining, lots of colors. Very very great guitar playing. Thanks!
This Hooker riff always eluded me . Thanks so much i have found the holy grail of the boogie .
I love your teaching method, easy to understand , I wish I would have found you long ago, as many of us "wanna be " players that have been self taught can only get to a certain point and it seems like we just keep rehashing what we know. I hope to be as smooth as you someday. You have given me a shot in the arm to continue this journey ..thank you
Gerry, Thanks!! Tim
Yeah, I totally agree! I felt like I had plateaued and suddenly I found this channel and (being self taught..I never wanted to sound like I was taught by a total blazing fast shredder) suddenly I have been able to really start getting better and playing songs that I thought were way out of my league. I especially like how Tim teaches the Jimi and SRV stuff
ditto
You are a pro, Make everything seem so easy...
fascinated by your playing , like always,,,....the way your fingers runs fluently accross the fingeroard, and the way you hit the strings with the pick...just amazing. a real guitar mentor to me.
Simply amazing.....what a wizard and a fabulous teacher,
Awesome guitar lesson on classic ZZ Top. This is a staple that all aspiring rock guitarists should learn and you do an outstanding job of teaching it!! I'm a convert!! I'll watch everything that you do. Thanks for the effort!!
William Wagnon Thanks for subscribing William! :) #la-grange
Just subscribed. Thanks for providing not only the proper know-how but also personally demonstrating that being a professional musician doesn't necessarily require one to assume the role of an anti-social, narcissistic tool. Correct guitar technique and a valuable life lesson. Such a deal! Thanks.
Jakexx01 q
Tim, i said it before, but you are SO DARN AMAZING! Your playing almost hurts my ears and senses, so great it is. Thanks for all your work, and sharing your knowledge for free with these awesome courses on youtube and on your own site. Cheers from the Netherlands!
Tim is an awesome guitarist in his own right let alone great teacher. Very cool.
Just found your channel few minutes ago... You are THE MAN! Awesome stuff! Subscribed. :)
Geeeeeeeeeeeeezuz, Tim! You NEVER cease to amaze me. How much more awesome can you get?! I think I enjoyed watching you play that more than seeing Billy do it.
Thank you.
Rock on, man!
J.
13thAMG Much appreciated! :) #la-grange #zz-top
Wow....who would ever think such a gifted talent, like Tim, could also be an incredible teacher.............priceless!
Thank you for sharing your talent with the world Tim. As others have said, the are not many teachers who can do it as well as you. I played this the other day as someone walked past the room and they thought I was just the greatest!!!
You do such a great job on your tones.
My ears were wide open at the time this song was released in 1973. I remember the FM DJ out of Cleveland waxing rhapsodic about BG's playing. At that time I was only imagining I was playing guitar. Lots of air guitar and imagination is what I'm saying. It was a short two years later when I got my first Fender Musicmaster and amp combo for Christmas. I can still remember that smell of the warm tube amp mixed with pine needles!
siskokidd Thanks for this comment Sisko! :) #la-grange #zz-top
Excellent instruction. Right combo of slowing down/ breaking down/ a few repetitions/ and moving on. Great camera angle and sound too.
This lesson was inspirational.....so clear and concise! Thanks for sharing!!
Hi Tim - I've really learned a lot from watching you on you tube and you are an excellent instructor. I really enjoy watching and listening to you and Marty playing together. I've been a life long member of Guitar Jamz and love playing the guitar. Thank you for helping all those watching to excel in our playing abilities.
William Zietlow Thanks for subscribing William! :) #la-grange

Hi Tim. God bless you for sharing your wisdom and experience. What an enchanting experience this is for me ....
I just stumbled across Mr. Pierce's video and I'm loving how without a doubt he could play it note for note but decided to add his own "flare" not showing off and destroying the song like allot tend to do. Classy Man, very well rounded and now I'm a subscriber..✌️
You're one hell of a musician brotha
"And then we blast!" lol you gotta luv it thanks for posting.
Jeff M Thanks for subscribing Jeff! :) #la-grange #zztop

10,000 hours PER LICK ;)
Attention to detail is what sets Tim apart from other players. That, and of course, immense talent developed from years of hard work. Thanks Tim.
Amazing Tim!!

ahmed rashed Thanks for subscribing! #la-grange #zz-top
Great lesson. I was playing it too fast and didn't realize how much better I can play it now that I understand where I'm going. Thanks!!
Wow, a few minutes of playing the fretted G & C notes with the little finger and keeping the index fingure planted on the E & D notes is a real workout! Thanks for this Tim, your a diamond mate. Namaste x
Stop playing classic tunes better than the artists themselves. Its rude. :)
Lol :D
Billy plays phenomenal, this doesn’t even touch him, i tough he would miss a note when i saw him this year, he didnt
Peter A. Michaelsen Billy's got a killer tone and feel, totally unique, no question about it. But Tim does touch it, which is why he's an A-list player who has worked with everybody in town. Don't be knocking Tim. Cheers.
Yeah it just to bad he played this on a non Les Paul Guitar originally, Or should I say in 72 he was playing on some piece o crap
Funny and true!
I was hoping you were going to keep on soloing the entire video.
Thankyou. Such a kind friend to have the patience to see me through this . My 13 yo son learnt this in a day. A long time ago!!! I am still playing catch up. I can enjoy the first riff for 3 years!
The best channel for learning guitar playing and techniques. Tim is just amazing. Flawless playing, superb technique, great sound and such a clear way of sharing the knowledge. Hats off, sir
I grew a beard when I watched this
Funny, As you can see, I have a beard.. Back in 1984 I was building the North Dallas Tollway I am a contractor/guitar player. So the money is from Pouring Concrete 24/7. Back then it was 12 inch beard and a baseball hat. One day a white Caddac pulls up by where I was yelling at a bunch of my guys. I look over and it's the kind Reverend, Billy Gibbons. At that time, he didn't wear that cap he does now. A baseball hat, long beard, just like mine. Somebody says, Hey ZZ Top! I walked over and he says to me, "Hey Brother" Are we sons of different mothers?" We had a short conversation, but he was impressed with our building the elevated highway, etc. Then said, Go to the bar Poor Davids, which is near Dallas. Bring the guys. Well, he wasn't there, but the bar keep said, all your drinking is on The Reverend! So, that weekend, I figured out how to play a bunch of ZZ Top tunes. Pretty easy actually. So now, 30 some years later. Watching Tim show how to play it, blows me away. Back then, no internet, no video lessons, you had to put the record on, play a minute back and forth. Figure the fingering. Etc.. You know the drill if you are over 40.. LOL Rev Billy has so much talent that even when he was in his early 20s jamming around Texas, he was quickly known as the Top of the Top in Jammin Texas Blues playing. I also met Stevie and Jimmy Lee Vaugn at Poor Davids. Saw him many times there. Sold me on learning Texas Blues. Anyway, beards are good. I have had mine since I was 17 years old. Now 65, the wife loves it... Enjoy.
And some insight
can you adopt me?
+Billy Justus adopt me too!
No! Me!!
Subscrived to Day and spent a couple of hours learning the Lagrange solo. You are a really good teacher mr. pierce. Thanks.
Huge fan of Tim's channel and had never taken one of his lessons until now. Been trying to get the finer points of this song down and this is by far the best lesson on it!
One of the most idiosyncratic solos ever , to the point nobody, probably even Billy G. hasn't re-created the studio version the same since lol
TIM... you are 'BOMBS AWAY'... i love it and thank you SO MUCH!
Tim, I've been studying guitar my whole life 50+, absolutely love the way you teach. I've always wanted to know what's in a guys head as the chords are moving by. This is great. Thanks
For many many years I have played this song the wrong way after seeing this video and you’ve made me and taught me how to correct it the right way I am totally amazed on your teaching thank you so much guitar players appreciate a guy like you that teaches us to do the things the Funway instead of the wrong way wow I feel so great now playing at the correct way and being able to be more creative walk the style of the coil thank you for your help you’re awesome
It’s amazing to have access to a guitar player like yourself learning from you than any other
Tim, you truly are my guitar hero. You are by far the best studio musician I have ever had the pleasure to communicate with. You speak the language very fluently. One day I hope to get to meet you and shake your hand. God bless.
I an so jealous of your ability. Thanks. We saw ZZ Top live two days ago. Wild times in senior citizen land .
I really hope I'm not just discovering Tim and he's stopped making vids! Maybe he's on tour or something but you're quickly becoming my favorite teacher. No BS, no Music Snobbery, just nice and patient.
Thank You Mr. Tim , you are such a good guy, a true blessing .....
Were so lucky!!one of the greats making tutos on youtube!!thanks from my ears and my fingers!! I apreciate so much this lessons
I am so glad you still get 'artifacts' because it shows me you are still human. Billy Gibbons plays it all over and gets artifacts too. So awesome. There is a great 'live' recording of this now on the new album ZZ Top "Raw". Thank you for this, very helpful.
Thank you for your time and generosity!
Thank you very much for this lesson. Reasonably easy to learn (with your assistance) but oh so very cool to be able to play.
This is just so incredible OMG! My heart is beating a million miles an hour! Thank you!! Omg!!❤️💕🎸
Every time I click on one of your videos I'm totally blown away. Your lessons are very easy to follow and always inspire me to pick my guitar back off the stand.
Tim you are true Master, I know I will never play like you, but I enjoy watching you tremendously 👍👍
I really enjoy your teaching approach and clarity... Thank You!
Wonderful, thank you! An amazing guitarist.. and teacher.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for spending the extra time, giving us ALL the details.
I not only get to learn the song properly, but also get to see your techniques on HOW you do it. ( super informative ) Thanks again :)
Brett Weber Thanks Brett! #la-grange
Fantastic lesson Tim. Thank you for the detailed breakdown!
Always inspiring. Thanks for all you do for the "rest of us"
Terrific lessons, Tim. I'm a 62 year old blues rocker who really should have learned a lot of this stuff decades ago.
thanks for the roadmap, fodder for the mental cannon
Your play like a Boss. Love it! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.
I just bought Tim's teaching package, available through his website. It is extensive, inspirational, and his teaching style is accessible and natural. It's fucking brilliant. Tim Pierce literally rocks (in numerous styles) the shit out of online teaching courses. I've already cut my third finger open trying Hendrix style unison bends, but I love pulling those bends over this tune!
Your channel Tim has been one of the most helpful I've found most definitely! Thanks for the great explanations!
Guitar god and musical legend. Thanks Tim.
Chris buck does that thing with the pick , and he’s awesome too. I haven’t even mentioned Billy Gibbons, and he’s singing too. Awesome chops. 👍👍🍻
Just awesome, excellent lesson, thanks Tim.
is not a new that tim is an awesome guitarist, but his lessons are the most apreciated for me(whith martys lessons)they take the best songs of the best guitarist, imo.thanks tim.you play, you teach, you rock!!! ;)
