What's wrong with the art of close quarters combat.... but they could of used a bowman with some spearman in the front with shields
I would to point out that those sword are maybe of asgardian nanotech, that is why they glow when they swing them, plus the shield are deflectors. Those 2 things with the asgardians natural superhuman strenght gives little reason for firearms. Plus norse culture 🤷🏽♂️

They appear normal when still, but when moving quickly (i.e. sword slashing in battle) the blade glows with a bluish-white aura of energy which greatly increases the power of the weapon (very often while the individual handles the weapon you can hear a strange vibration, indicating that the blade can turn blue at any time), leaving handheld weapons obsolete: be they lightning, bullets or arrows.

Amazing how the WHOLE PLAN of the Dark Elves revolved around this ONE LAST SHIP getting through all of the defenses and it happened to have Malekith on board.
Dark Elves' battle strategy seems to rely very heavily on kamikaze attacks.

I hate that Asgard is so useless in the MCU. The guards are useless. The soldiers are useless. Even their defenses and technology is useless. It felt like odin was the only one keeping Asgard strong. I mean as the dominant realm in the universe you'd expect everything in Asgard is extremely superior to other realms. Also in the MCU I think the only reason asgardian God's are considered "gods" is because they live in the dominant realm in the universe and they have powers. Like literally odin thor and heimdall are the only useful asgardian in the MCU.

@Jake Thor movies are not movies about Nordic culture. These are fantasy superhero movies created by an American comic book writer that are very loosely inspired by real myths and legends. There are lasers and spaceships in this very scene...which should make it plainly clear. Besides, real life historical films that aren't even fictional films commonly have light skinned Caucasian actors playing the role darker skinned people. Jesus is often portrayed as a brown haired, blue eyed European even though he was historically a brown skinned Middle Eastern Jew. Having European/light skinned Caucasian actors play East Asians is also a thing - John Wayne played Genghis Khan in film and Hollywood often had Caucasian actors dress up in yellow face to portray Chinese and Japanese people.

So Asgardians have airships armed with plasma gatlinguns and missiles yet their infantry only used melee weapons while the Dark Elves have ships with cloaking technology but no weapons relying only on ramming to damage the enemy yet their infantry is completely ranged.
They are basically the opposite of the Asgardians in every way, but unfortunately they make much less sense than the Asgardians.

I always find it interesting to see the scale of ships in movies, animations and games. With the dark elf fighter things against the whole city itself makes them look smaller than they are. Once one of them successfully crashes into the castle itself is it revealed how big the things really are.

It's convenient how none of the many pillars destroyed in the throne room were not structurally important to the building so the roof didn't collapse in.
Maybe the pillars are more so for artistic value, not structural integrity.

Regardless of what people think, I really did enjoy this movie. Besides, I don't have any problem with the elves succeding in this one, since the defenses of Asgard didn't consider their flying and fighting rechniques when updating their defenses, and we can later see that Malekith's ship had actually been flying above Asgard the whole time, so it makes sense they had the time and the odds in their favor.
The mental gymnastics needed to justify an advanced civilization having shit poor defense systems against aircraft probably took more effort than the directors gave in the production of this shiet...
As far as I can see, Asgard is good on the offensive rather than in defense. The last war against the dark elves was fought on the territories of the dark elves, which means that the Asgardians were not expecting an invasion from a strong opponent at all since all the other enemies that remained were not strong enough. Another advantage that the dark elves had was their dark matter technology and their dark origins. When Jane was possessed by the Ether, Heimdall said that he could no longer see her because the Ether blinded him, which means that this could offer a safe zone for the dark elves.
What always struck me as odd was, why is Asgard so quiet? There's no people screaming, there's no commotion, it's just silence outside of the fighting. Did seriously nobody in that hall hear the explosions outside? Why errybody standing around?
Asgardians don't panic.

To add on to it, the ships missiles were very effective against the ships yet they only used it once. Had the ships utilized the missiles more the elves ships wouldn't have gotten far

The Asgardian defenses were mostly for aesthetic purposes, the Dark Elves on the other hand were ready for war, and importantly, the Asgardians were caught of guard right at their doorsteps. It's the equivalent of a battle hardened spec-ops invasion force suddenly appearing in the heart of London, only having the police and the British Queen's Guard standing against them. Sure they're well trained and all, but they wouldn't stand much of a chance.
Asgard is supposed to be this hyper advanced intergalactic civilization, yet looks and acts as advanced as a poor mediaeval kingdom. They messed up with Asgard.

Andrie I get your point but in my opinion that wasn’t because he got weaker but because the enemies were stronger: Hela and Thanos. Actually in IW the best way they had to prove Thanos power was by defeating maybe the 3 strongest characters in MCU, Thor, Heimdall and The Hulk. The first minute in IW when I saw Heimdall laying in the floor my reaction was “no way!”
And how didn’t Heimdall know of thanos and know to keep their ship away from thanos at all costs

Something I never noticed before, you can see where the bridge was repaired after Thor demolished it in the first movie. A lot of intricate detail went into rendering that effect, and it's only seen for a second or two. I respect the shit out of that kind of attention to detail.

And the mortal wakandans were able to detect the invasion as soon as they entered the atmosphere (probably even sooner than shield detected it)
and yet a bunch of Outriders where able to bypass the shield by rubbing up against it.
This is because Asgardian is not relying on tech which is silly considering how advanced their civilization really is they just dumb

Why is everyone complaining about Asgardian defense system? What exactly is wrong with it? They have an energy shield with a generator that could only be destroyed from the inside. If it wasn't for Dark Elves prepping and sending in Kurse in advance, dark elves wouldn't be able to do squat to Asgard, only kill a handful of soldiers at the cost of their entire fleet. They were also counter attacking the ships with turrets and their own ships pretty effectively for being caught off guard like that. Turrets started shooting INSTANTLY when the ships flew into the center of the city. The guards were all on stations, ready for combat, for thousands of years of peace. Asgard has INCREDIBLE defense system if you ask me. Dark elves had the numbers, the technology, an inside job ongoing, and even element of surprise to beat them, and they still failed - yes, they killed the queen, but they didn't get the reality stone, and lost vast majorit of their offensive force. If Thor didn't go ahead to meet them they probably would've have to go into hiding for another century to build their strength back someplace. The only thing that seemed like a weak spot is how much an average dark elf is superior to an asgardian when it comes to direct troop confrontations. But technological advantage is something that really kicked in there. Asgardians are fighting in CQC, that's true, but if you are covered head to toe in a magical, bulletproof gear and you have ships and balista equipped with lasergun technology, that should hardly be a downside to their army vast majority of the time. The problem was, dark elves had weapons that could penetrate their armor like their black hole grenades and those red laser canons. Against those kinds of weapons, it would obviously benefit asgardians to be equipped with ranged weapons. But once again, they were caught off guard there. And we do know from later scenes they do have trained archers, so they actually COULD potentially even the odds if they had proper kinds of guards at play. I really don't think Asgards defense deserve that kind of heavy critique. They did a good job. So did the dark elves. That's what you get when you have two competent forces clashing. An interesting battle in which both sides take heavy losses. This is a VERY GOOD battle scene as far as MCU goes. Maybe the best large scale one, honestly.
You can see the dark elves laser gun melting pillars when they were on earth. Also nobody on earth knows that they arrived at London until the ship decloaked. Also it was ploughing through the land .
The AA system sucked ass. The mounted guns hit NOTHING.
The asgardian fighters were also shown to have significantly higher losses. Guns ineffective. Inferior armor. Only the missiles worked.
These are not two effective forces. Asgard was not only caught off guard, but they appear to not have kept up at all with their adversary's tech.
This is long term complacency.
As battles go, this is very one sided. Not very fun to watch. Would've liked a bit more back and forth.

1. Hit nothing? They hit the ships a dozen times on screen. That's the explosions with smoke effects, it's lasers bouncing off ship's shields. You even get a view from inside dark elf ship that's under turret fire, with red warning marks popping off all around their screen. Turrets were too low a caliber To take down the ships in just a few hits, that's all. How is this incompetence? If you see someone unloading a minigun into a tank without much effect, do you call a minigun archaic, ineffective? No, it's perfectly fine for a battlefield some weapons to not be strong enough for some defensive systems, that's very realistic. You yourself noticed that Asgardian ships had weapons that could one shot dark elf crafts, so what is your problem dude?
2. Inferior armor? Did you miss the part when one of the asgardians destroys the dark elfship with KNIVES? Meanwhile, Asgardians had a cytadel shield that tanked a ship crashing into it full speed without a dent. Like I said above, would've been an impenetrable defense for Asgard if it wasn't for the mole. And where are those scenes showing Asgardian fighters taking "significantly higher" losses? Did you watch the funeral scene? A couple dozen asgardians died in total! While all dark elves who engaged were WIPED! Inferior my ass.
3. Asgardians "did not keep up with their adversaries tech"? Bro you didn't even watch the movie, did you? Asgardians have just established peace across all of their realms and were convinced dark elves are literally EXTINCT. How do you keep up with an enemy that doesn't exist? How do you not get punished by a surprise attack when you are convinced there is nobody left to challenge you?
Asgardians played that very well all things considered. The losses were heavy on both sides too. Wasn't one sided at all.

Inferior armor, the dark elves have fighter craft that can plow through buildings and they even collide into asgard's fliers with no damage.
One was destroyed by knives, but only when it was flying low, slow and conveniently next to a bridge and a guy with especially keen eyes. Plus, from behind/side, where armor is usually weaker. Once stealth was abandoned, they were too fast for infantry to latch on.
Weak guns, asgard's fighter craft missed most if not all their shots.
Missiles work, but as I said, we see more of Asgard's fighter craft were destroyed. They traded terribly.

Irl, modern militaries are constantly poking at their adversaries, gleaning info, figuring out what they have, and adapting to it.
Asgard being the premier power of the nine realms and a scifi civilisation has no excuse in this. It should have plenty of resources to properly defend itself. And properly spy on its potential enemies.

People are forgetting if this wasn’t the Dark Elves heimdall would have seen the coming a couple hundred AUs away and could have weaponized the Bifrost with no issue. Also even if an enemy gets that close and catches you that off guard the only reason the shield went down was because of Kurse; a near hulk or possibly stronger level of entity.

The dark elves were defeated without the Ether, something they do not have during this assault. You could argue that it's a surprise attack, but Heimdall can see pretty much everything in existence, he would notice an army of a race he has never seen before
A lot of people don’t seem to understand heimdall’s powers. He can see anything in the universe through his eyes. The only thing he can’t see through is the magic of the dark elves in this movie
