I was 16 years old in April 1973 and someone just got the album. We entered an abandoned house, the album owner had a portable turntable, we sat down and started passing a hash pipe. We were a group of 5 who usually laughed and were talkative. 2 or 3 minutes into the album, everyone fell silent. Just mesmerized. When someone spoke..."who is this?" "Its Pink Floyd" was the answer. It was so unique for the time, we couldnt really figure it out. Just that it was special. A few weeks later, we would be listening to it over and over, several times a day for weeks and months. We quickly recognized it was an absolute masterpiece. In a space of 10 years, from when the Beatles were no.1 with simplistic, 3 chord songs like I Wanna Hold your Hand.... to this... was like going through an accelerated, massive evolutionary change. I dont think any other piece of music from that era could hold anyones interest for decades to follow as DSOTM has done.
The being destroyer of worlds I honestly don’t find all but Seamus, Echoes (my favorite track from them), and One of These Days that enjoyable for me. But hey, it’s ok you like it! I think Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and Animals are all very good
My dad was 14 during the 80's, and was getting into rock music. Stuff like Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie inspired him to take up guitar. He never got a teacher, as his parents were busy dealing with 7 children, so he taught himself. My dad would listen try to repeat jingles from commercials and Pink Floyd songs. When he was around 18, he got into a band. They were semi-successful, got a record deal, and played in front of 60,000 people. My dad still plays music in his small band, but only as a hobby now. When we were cleaning out our basement, I stumbled upon his old albums. My dad shared this story with me, which was a nice experience.
I was born October 73. the first music I listened to was pretty much all pink Floyd, and I would spend hours with my parents headphones on just listening to it and day dreaming stories to the music. I still have all Pink Floyd cds and still listen to them daily.
You paint quite a nostalgic picture in the beginning. The first time I listened to it was in my room, at night with the lights off. It spoke to me, it marked a pivotal point in my life.

Dark side is remarkable because of this consistent theme of social isolation, and depression, injustice, death, it kind of covers the modern human condition-all with bluesy/melodic progressive music, pretty good.
I agree! It transcends all musical genres. No matter what kind of music you are into, you can still listen to DSOTM and relate to it's content, whatever walk of life you are from.
The first song I ever heard from Pink Floyd was "Us and Them" on the radio when I was in middle school and was eventually hooked. Dark Side of The Moon is the very first album I ever bought and it will always be my favorite album ever.
That One Guy Shine on is one of the best songs I've ever heard, before I knew what the songs where about I perfered Wish you were here and Have a Cigar, but after I read about it I absolutely love Shine on but not more than Dark Side
For the most part, this is a good video, describing the motivation and process behind the album. I say “for the most part”, because of its glaring omission of at least mentioning Alan Parson’s contributions to the album. As the album’s recording/mix engineer, his own talents played a big part in the sound of the album; first, in capturing the performances of the band, and then combining all the performances and various sonic textures into a cohesive body. Alan’s work on the album resulted in it being a highly immersive experience that was magical for the listener, and I think that this is worth mentioning. FWIW

An iconic album such as Dark Side of the Moon can't be over rated. Whomever says this is expressing a type of jealousy that is based on the huge sales and $$ generated by the album. When it came out I was 10 years old but my friends older sister had a copy. It blew me away, I've never heard anything like it before or after. Kudos to the band for crafting a masterpiece that will live on forever in our hearts, mind, eyes and ears.
Just got this on vinyl today. This is my third time buying the album. I started listening to it at 15 in 2001, a little under thirty years after its release at the time. It is still a masterpiece in spite of everything new I've been listening to.
“Time” was the first song to ever move me on an emotional level to the point of tears. I had listened to incredible music and songs before like “Heroes” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” but when the chorus of “Time” hit... that’s when everything changed. This band is the band that turned music into a passion for me instead of a past time. I am still young and the lyrics of “Time” shouldn’t scare me as much as they do, but they *do* and has encouraged me to change the way I treat others and talk to people. I don’t know the point of this comment was; I’m sure plenty in this comment section will have similar stories and things to say but thank you for reading this far, have a nice day.

The first time I heard Dark Side I was on the air playing album cuts on a NY college FM radio station. The album had just arrived and I decided to preview it on air, without hearing it first.
