Are you interested in learning how to make your own video essays?
If so, I've got some exciting news. I'm exploring the possibility of putting together a cohort based course where I can teach video essay skills. This would involve working directly with me and a small group of your peers to put together your own video essay. It would be a hands on class where we would have live sessions learning skills and analyzing other video essays.
This would be less about hard skills like editing in After Effects, and more about high concept knowledge like ideation, creating and sticking to a schedule, writing scripts, and finding visual inspiration.
Right now, I think the price for the first cohort would be ~$800, but I am still playing around with that.

I suggest also incorporating some elementary hard skills if the price tag is going to be in the $800 range - there's a lot of competition for that price where Premiere/After Effects is included.

Definitely some next level production here. Amazing motion graphic work too. This is such a fitting tribute/analysis of an amazing and timeless song.
The way he was able to write and record the script to sync with the actual song is very impressive.

@@atomiccritter6492 he might mean that Roger isn't dominating the song, in this way it allows other members to shine as much as he does in pieces like the wall, this is especially seen when we hear Rick's musical talent throughout the whole song.

Repetition mutes excitement, eventually 2 cooks fling despised excrement's. If fecal matters, stench never scatters.

When I was a teenager, I had a friend that got into a rough accident. He had to take painkillers because of it, and got addicted. One day, he sent me a message telling me he wanted to stop taking them. To help him stop, we would listen to this song every time he had a strong urge. Instead of getting high on painkillers, we would listen to this song. I'll never forget that, even though we parted ways years ago.
Respect to your old friend. I have seen many friends fall prey to addiction, but only one was able to kick the habit entirely on his own.

it's also possibly the greatest psychedelic song ever constructed. I don't take that lightly. I've been HEAVILY into psych music of all genres including even R&B and hip hop, jazz, etc and this song is #1 in my mind.

@@frankphillips7436 I've always thought Wright actually gave Pink Floyd its sound, that almost undefinable thing. Pull Rick's keyboard parts out of Dark Side, and the album becomes clever but pedantic navel-gazing.

This is very well-written. I've never understood Echoes like this before. Is this like a general consensus among Pink Floyd fans? Also, explaining the song while it plays without cuts is awesome. I feel like I'm attending a very interesting literature class.
I understand the song very differently, and yet this video still made me fall deeper in love with Echoes. The width and depth of interpretation that is possible here is one of the reasons I classify it as a masterpiece.
It was really well done. While I enjoy some of Syd's songs, Echoes is their first great song. People always look to the Darkside album, but this is where they became Pink Floyd
If you take the time to listen to The Endless River on vinyl in one sitting, it's hard to not get the full breath of what they have been trying to say since around this time. Being on psychedelics helps. It's layers upon carefully crafted layers that all strengthen their message by letting go of traditional notions of storytelling and communicating on a more instinctive level. It's insane to realize how skilled they were in this and how well they were able to put these skills to work.

me and my close friends came to the conclusion that echoes is the best music ever composed by humanity. The melody, progression, lyrics, rhythm and everything in this song fits perfectly. I am a huge fan of the band's early years and without a doubt after the piper at the gates of dawn, meddle is my favorite album.

Just wanted to point out that Waters doesn’t sing on Echoes. You mention Roger singing at 12:45 .
It’s all Wright and Gilmour, which they performed together shortly before Wright’s death.
Gilmour said he would never play the song again, because he couldn’t imagine doing it without harmonizing with Richard Wright.
The vocals are made great by Rick Wright's harmony with Gilmour and the absence of Waters. Hopefully Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets will play Echoes in their next tour as they were telling people they would.

Their voices are very similar, but Wright didn’t have the range of Gilmour.
In the higher notes it’s difficult to tell them apart, but in the lower register Gilmour has a much more unique voice.
Echoes is one of the most beautiful songs in human history. If aliens ever want to get put on to human music, Echoes should be the first suggestion.

It's not that good. It's mostly just cool jam session with some psychedelic lyrics, an experimental mid section and triumphant end section. It's not as good other songs that the band have done or other progressive rock contemporaries. It's definitey not one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made

Commenters: Do yourself a favor and listen to "Echoes: Live in Gdansk" on Gilmour's YT channel or on your streaming service. Echoes is a conversation between Richard Wright and Gilmour and Live in Gdansk is the last time they played the song together before Rick died. It hits me harder than any other performance/track I have ever listened to, and all PF fans have to give it a listen.
It's even sadder to think that Gilmour has gone on to say that he would not perform Echoes without Wright. So that performance isn't just Wright's last performance, it's the last performance of that song by any Pink Floyd member.

Polyphonic made a mistake mentioning Waters was singing at one point, and the song is Wright and Gilmour. This made me think of that Gdańsk performance, and what David said about ever performing Echoes again.

I'm 67 now and bought Meddle when it was released in the US. As so many here have already said, Echoes became my favorite song back then, one that makes my eyes get moist. It's still is my favorite song 50 year later. And yes, I still have that 50 year old vinyl.

I'm 67 & bought the LP when it came out too. Echos became mine and almost every person I talked with big favourite. It was the encore when I saw them in '75.
The Albatross truly mates for life, returning to the same spot and mate every year, where they kiss and celebrate each other in a clearly emotional way. Their beaks clattering together, they take turns squawking their affection for each other before settling down, heads side by side pressed together.

This might just be my new favourite video essay. The decision to narrate the whole song in real time was absolutely genius. Like there's only a handful of songs I can think of where this idea would've worked. It conveys the power of the song so much more clearly than a traditional analysis ever could. The visuals were absolutely juicy as well. You've outdone yourself, my dude.
Obscured by Clouds (1972 - between Meddle and Dark Side) is highly underrated and probably my personal favourite Floyd album for anyone still diving into their deep rabbit hole. You can absolutely hear the evolution and transition to Dark Side.

70s Pink Floyd is their peak
Dark side ,Wish you were here, Animals, The wall are the big four. Atom heart mother, meddle, and obscured by cloud are all from the 70s also and they’re all good. After getting to know all the 70s albums I’d go back to their first two albums, piper at the gates of dawn, and a saucerful of secrets. After that it’s sort of a mixed bag, following saucer, you have the soundtrack to the film More, I’m personally not a fan, it’s got some ok songs but over all not great. Ummagumma which in my opinion is underrated, the first half is live is solid, the studio half is not bad but it’s not a casual listen, go into it with an open mind and pay attention, it’s not a throw on album. Other than that you have the albums that came out after the wall, there’s people who like some of those albums and people who don’t. I personally like a momentary lapse of reason, the others have some good parts but over all I think people are more opinionated about the last four albums, you could honestly take em or leave em

I think it's funny how this song was changed to not be about space as Pink Floyd didn't want to be known as space rock band, but then people started noticing how this song matches up really well with the last 23 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey
The way the music and the script play hand-in-hand at 7:48 is just beautiful
In Pink Floyd's 1966-1983 golden years, Pink Floyd did a lot of emotional, profound and beautiful songs and albums but Echoes is in my honest opinion one of Pink Floyd's best ever singular suites. I love that you also mentioned the influences on Echoes of Pink Floyd's then previous albums Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. I've always believed that Meddle overall together with Pink Floyd's other masterpieces such as Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here owe a lot to those very underrated gems.
Today, I took a few hours to skateboard to the Atlantic here in Maine. The day was perfect, the skies were clear, the wind was calm, and the air crisp. As I skated through the trees, my mind began to drift to Echoes. It just came to me. When I arrived at the ocean, I was rewarded with totally calm waters and a view all the way to the edge of the horizon. I sat on the rocks and just watched the world in front of me, taking in life around me. I began to play Echoes. For all 24 minutes, I sat alone and observed, watching the albatross' fly and the kelp drift. I watched a family at play, the daughter chasing their dog and the parents walking behind. I was at peace. Life for a brief moment was calm and made sense. All that is Echoes was in front of me. When the song ended, I was overcome with a feeling of calm and clarity. The world around me made sense. And when I left, I left more complete. We all find our way back to the sea. Echoes captures all of this unlike anything else. It is spiritual and moving. Without hearing Echoes today, I would be a little less complete of a human.
Your experience sounds transcendental, you really achieved a piece of Nirvana for what I read.
It reminded me when I went camping in Sweden with friends and took some acid, we started a camp fire, we sat there in silence on the side of this lake and just listened to this song. We were transfixed beyond reason.

Used to put this song on, smoke, and lay in my bed pretending I was a in a sensory deprivation tank. Awesome piece.
Twice, I've had friends over, one of whom liked to cook special brownies, and each time was a different mutual friend trying them for the first time. And both times, they fell prey to the universal newbie error: half an hour in, "I don't feel anything, I'd better eat some more", and 15-30 minutes later, _wham_ .
And both times, as they were feeling the world spin and semi-freaking out, I pulled out _Meddle_ , put side 2 on the turntable and put the needle down, had them lie down on the couch and just listen. Works every time.
This one and Dogs are perfect for it.

As someone who is familiar with Iqbal's poetry and a huge Pink Floyd fan, I am shocked that I never picked up this correlation between the two....
As a fellow massive Pink Floyd fan i notice your dedication to the band. This video in itself is a piece of art. Pink Floyd keeps spreading inspiration in all kinds of media! And it's just wonderful.
Your documentaries and videos are the best! This is one Pink Floyd album that still doesn’t get the praise it deserves
People who have never heard Echoes before, to this day, are still blown away. They are blown away not only by the brilliant music and sounds but by the fact that people find themselves FEELING various emotions they were not prepared for. I don't know how many times I have seen people react to Pink Floyd and find themselves in tears-again-to this day. Pink Floyd, with their genius and brilliance, creating masterpiece after masterpiece grab you, pull you in and make you feel.
The Pompeii version brings a masterpiece out of a masterpiece.
My favorite song. It's strange to explain that, "oh yeah, my favorite song is 23-minute epic with [insert ambient section for five minutes]," but if you hear Echoes, you'll know why. I haven't heard anything that makes me feel quite like Echoes does. I don't even know if I can call it a song anymore; it's more like a symphony. It's unique. You hear it slightly differently every time you listen to it. It has this ethereal quality mixed in with this level of epicness I can't put my finger on and can't be explained with words. I can't articulate why I love it so much, but I know it's special. There's nothing quite like it. It's the exact reason I love Pink Floyd. It sucks I was born after their glory days (I'm a child, teenager specifically), but I know one thing: it doesn't subtract from the fact of the matter - their music is awesome.
This is one of the most masterful video essays on music I have ever come across. Insane how well you've pulled it off considering the legendary status of the song. Kudos.

Meddle was Pink Floyd at its most essential level. While many albums that came after it could be considered better, Meddle will always be THE Pink Floyd album.
I take _Meddle_ , _Dark Side of the Moon_ , _Wish You Were Here_ and _Animals_ all together as the essential Pink Floyd collection.
Yeah, I'm leaving out _The Wall_ though I love it, it represents something entirely else than those four; in a way it's the group's _grand finale_ .
@@dwc1964 I respect The Wall but it never really grabbed me as much as the albums you just mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, it’s ambitious and an amazing album. I see meddle overlooked but I think it’s right up there with Dark side.

The flow of Dark Side is amazing and as a complete piece is better than Meddle but Echoes is so strong I'm a Meddle guy all the way

What an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE of a video. This, with the DSOTM series, is the perfect way of showing the world how creative the Floyd were. I still feel goosebumps when I listen to, in my opinion, their best live "album", the 1974 live concert in Wembley, scrambled and hidden between three different releases (The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here Experience editions and The Early Years boxset bonus disc). With the very best of their most prog albums, it contains the entirety of The Dark Side of the Moon (of course, with all the original members), Shine On You Crazy Diamond with all its parts, the early versions of Dogs and Sheep (with slower rythm and a different overall experience). And the cherry on top, an inmaculate, stunning live version of Echoes, with the best and biggest diference being added female chorus and an emotive sax solo before the funky tandem of Gilmour and Wright part of the song.
Kudos to you for making such high quality videos, with an astounding production and creativity that brings light to these gems.
Pink Floyd has been the absolut first one for me. I am not even 24 but there is such an emotional and special bond between their masterpieces and me listening to them. I mostly start crying and dive deep in myself. It's almost like I have fell love with audio.
I watched your Led Zeppelin video and the automatic youtube player dropped this video after that. I was telling myself "yeah why not", even though I know how I mostly react to Pink Floyd's music.
Now, I just finished this masterpiece, made about an another masterpiece and m tears are falling like crazy. Thank you. I have to be honest with all of you: I was barely informed about the meaning of this bands music. Even just the melody made me fall deeply in love. But now, knowing the story behind... made me never leave them again.

Yes, that is true! "Obscured By Clouds" is also a very good album.
Obscured by Clouds was recorded as a soundtrack album for a film called “La Vallée”, although the band had a falling out with the film company and ended up releasing it on their own without the backing of the film company. So, in a sense it’s both a soundtrack album and a studio album. Dark Side of the Moon, however, was their next studio album to not have been originally commissioned by or for a film company. So Polyphonic may have been thinking of Obscured by Clouds as more of a soundtrack album than a true studio album.
In the ambience section, when organ come back to "tonality" with a single note, marks the golden ratio of the song.

This was the first Pink Floyd album I stumbled upon when I was 13 or 14 years old. After that, it was on, I found everything I could find on Floyd, I'm 65 now and I am still finding things like this video for instance. Echoes was the first piece I listened to, it was my favorite piece of music from Pink Floyd, and still is today. Thank you for making this video, I really appreciate your work on this and the explanation of the story and on the way they progressed.😊

Finding meaning in the music has been something I’ve watched countless videos on and read every scrap I could find.
Until the day I watch this video I didn’t truly understand them or the music as I did afterward. The texture and context you bring to one of the greatest tracks ever recorded is priceless.

Outstanding overview. The first time I heard Echoes, it was the late 90s and I was at my then boyfriend's house; we had all dropped acid. Eric put the album, Meddle, on and we all sat in the living room on couches and cushions, ambient and colored lighting making it feel like we were on another planet. I had no idea what I was in for. The album crescendos with Echoes and if you've never experienced this then you totally should because it is Incredible, frightening, ominous and otherworldly.

Echoes is the finest piece of recorded music, as far as I'm concerned, in the history of humankind. It spans the genesis of a human life with the ping sounds, to its very end, with the dolly zoom-like sound effects of voices in the end serving as the voices of our ancestors, which the consciousness fades into.
Yet as a recording it isn't particularly good. It's basically a high fidelity demo. The piece fully came together live. When you hear the live versions from late 1971 to early 1973 or 2006, the studio arrangement is limp in comparison. This is in direct contrast to DSOTM which came together on record in a way that they couldn't fully achieve live.

Echoes is my favorite song of all time
Thank you so much for this great video. I personally feel that this song is the best musical experience ever written and love it with a passion. When I was young I was blessed with a marvelous musical upbringing. My parents and uncles, and later also my guitar teacher, showed me so much beauty from every genre you can think of. When my father and uncle introduced me to Pink Floyd we eventually reached the album Meddle where at the end they both agreed that I should not experience Echoes then and there with them. It was something I had to feel by myself and that's what I did.
The way the band picks you up at the start and takes you for a journey through yourself and at the end safely puts you back down is nothing short of incredible. To date I feel that this is the only piece of music that does it to such an extent. Because of that I really appreciate the thought of playing the entire song in the video!
The moment I saw Polyphonic - Echoes on my recommendation , I really wanted to scream like crazy, just like in the concert of your favorite band when they play your favorite song, you would scream right at the first note. I wonder what kind of feeling do you have for all these work you've accomplished. These videos essays to content creators like you are just like songs to musicians.

Yep, much as I love 70’s Floyd - especially Echoes- I totally agree. I’m a huge Syd Barrett fan and The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a wonderful album- so creative, eccentric and light years ahead of of its time, yet a defining album of its time. I’ll never tire of hearing it.
Legit, I thought I was the only one here. The title almost ruined the video for me. “Meddle” is a masterpiece album, especially because of “Echoes”, but Syd Barrett was hands down the band’s genius, and “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (mono mix) is my favorite album of all time. I can’t get along with Floyd fans who dismiss his work so easily. To me, “Piper” had just the right amount of experimentation and pop.
the "looking through the knotholes of granny's wooden leg" was just a one off joke and a callback reference to their 1964-1965 days (pre-Syd) of The Abdabs and The T-Set and the various other names they went under and the vocalist they had then (whose name escapes me at the moment) who apparently would introduce songs with these joke names and on one occasion (or maybe more) would introduce every song they did in a set as "looking through the knotholes of granny's wooden leg"
This song is a truly trancendant experience. I will never forget the first time I listened to Echoes, It took my breath away in a way few pieces of media ever did
I'm very glad there's a well-made video discussing Echoes. Echoes is my favorite Pink Floyd masterpiece and It's often overshadowed by Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. I love those albums, but I feel a very close connection to Echoes. Hopefully, others here feel the same. Very well done video.

I LOVE this song. I discovered it watching Pink Floyd's "Live at Pompeii" concert film in (I think) 1974 with friends from high school. We knew and loved "Dark Side of the Moon" but the old material was life-altering.
