INFO: The Piper At The Gates of Dawn is Pink Floyd’s debut album and the only album they made under the leadership of Syd Barrett. Ever since its release it’s been regarded as one of the most influential albums of psychedelic rock music and a definite step in the development of prog-rock. Originally inspired by RnB and blues, the group started experimenting with drawn-out live sessions with genre bending guitar and keyboard sounds and other-wordly rhythms. Songs such as “Astronomy Domine” and “Interstellar Overdrive” are great examples of that. But the album was not just a source of long-winded, psychedelic freak-outs. Syd was also a master at crafting short, child-like pop songs. Couple that with cutting-edge production and recording techniques, and you end up with an outstanding listening experience, that would inspire generations of musicians to come.

I love this album. People don't get it because they love Gilmour and Waters as a duo and this sounds weird, but it's a MASTERPIECE, plays with stereo (imagine that in that age wasn't a common thing), is EXTRA psychedelic, has childish/experimental vibes and it's one of my favorite albums ever. I also adore Syd Barrett.

The first time that I heard Piper was also the first time that I tripped on acid. We and my friends were sitting in the basement of my bands drummer (like we always do) and I had reached my peak. I was just getting into Floyd at the time, and I requested that my friend who was playing the music (who was also the guitarist in our band) to put on some PF, so i could see what all the hype was about their music on drugs. In my head, I assumed that he was going to play DSOTM, or Animals, but he decided to put on Piper (he referred to it simply as “Early Floyd”). I knew who Syd was, but I was skeptical about tripping out to music that I haven’t heard before. The shuffled up the album, and the first song that come on was Bike (it’s funny, cause that’s the last song on the album). I remember seeing Syd Barrett floating around on a pink cloud, playing the keyboards and singing. I knew that he wasn’t the keyboardist, but that’s still what I saw in my head.

There's a brazilian rocker called Jupiter Apple that to me sounded like if Syd Barrett released a modern album. The album in question is called "Tarde na Fruteira" (2008) Despite having portuguese lyrics, they are well placed within the melody, I hope foreigners can be taken by the melodies because they are great. Sadly the guy died in 2015 from alcohol abuse, but not before releasing his masterpiece. The chorus to the first song says people will find about this album in 2020 and it will become a cult classic. @@trevorcorcoran5007 - I think that you'll find that Gilmour and Waters don't remember those albums as fondly; the way that era contains a lot of "psychedelic noodling" according to David Gilmour, and Roger Waters considers the time before Dark Side to be a "learning" period best skipped - except for "Echoes," which seems to be universally admired.
Nick Mason is now touring the earlier material, with the blessing of Waters and Gilmour, remarkably enough.
I've always liked all of it; fortunately, my older brother had some Pink Floyd albums at his apartment, in the 1960s, but I never heard them - but I looked into them, before Dark Side, and Meddle was the first Pink Floyd album, for me(on 8 track tape!), and "Fat Old Sun" was one of the first songs I learned on guitar besides "easy" or "learner" songs. So, after "Atom Heart Mother's" taped effects, the mixture of taped effects with music brilliantly shown in The Dark Side of the Moon" seemed natural and logical, especially when you've figured out the humor(or humour).

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is honestly one of my favorite albums from Pink Floyd. The dreamy lyrics and imagery depicted in many of the songs (Paint Box, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Apples And Oranges, Interstellar Overdrive, Astronomy Domine, Matilda Mother, Lucifer Sam) just whisks me off to this magical place that constantly assures me that everything is okay.
I remember the first time I went to a Pink Floyd tribute concert, despite only knowing 2 songs from the band, "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2" and "Wish You Were Here". I just randomly decided to search up Pink Floyd on UA-cam and the first song from Syd while he was still in the band was "See Emily Play ", one of my now favorite Pink Floyd songs. I found myself searching up even more on Pink Floyd, and I found out that this guy named Syd Barrett was in the band for a while when they first started out, but was kicked out due to his unstable condition and unpredictable nature.
At that very moment, I found out exactly what "Wish You Were Here" (which is my favorite Pink Floyd song) was about. It was all about him. Ever since then, I have been absolutely captivated by Syd's tragic tale, and even got Nick Mason's book "Inside Out", where I found out more about Syd's terrible condition firsthand from Mason himself. I enjoy observing the live concerts Syd and the band did for this album because it chronicles how tame and severe his unstable mind became and how the other members unfortunately had to deal with it.

I'm so glad you gave this album a video. It's so underrated and overlooked by both Pink Floyd fans and music lovers. It's one of my few 10/10 records because of the sheer inventiveness and musical bliss it brings, but also because Barrett's lyrics are so poignant and beautiful. People with an anti-McCartney sentiment (a.k.a. people that hate non-serious music/music with a sense of humor) often dismiss the childlike nature of the lyrics, not taking into account the broader picture that Syd wanted to portray: the importance of keeping the wonder of how children look at life; the need for us to be able to amaze us with the beautiful things of life, be it simple or complex. Few records grasp that idea; even fewer manage to do it while delivering astonishing music. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is not only Pink Floyd's best record, but it's one of the greatest albums of all time.

The Beatles were more consistent than Pink Floyd, but this Piper album is better than anything the Beatles have ever done, partucularly when you compare the resources each band had. By the time of Sgt Peppers, the Beatles had two songwriters with extensive studio/arrangement experience, George Martin, the keys to Abbey Road, and they even had intelligence agencies and institutes helping them along. They were unstoppable kings. Pink Floyd, on the other hand, was a new band, with limited studio resources, and the whole thing was envisioned by one fairly inexperienced songwriter.
Pepper has cool studio tricks, but other than a few Lennon songs, it's standard pop-rock with an iconic feel. Piper has cool tricks as well, but all of the writing is unique in some way. Each song has it's own bizarre characteristic on paper, whether it's altering time signatures, abrupt key modulation, strange modes, melodies that resolve earlier or later than you'd expect, etc. It's also subtle enough to not sound pretentious. Even the words are more trippy. Kaleidoscope eyes is cool to think about-- but gnomes telling you there's another way to say 'hurray' is visceral and emersive.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  5 років тому

Very interesting take on the two bands. Never thought about this tbh. When you mention that The Beatles worked
with intelligence agencies, what do you mean by that? And in what ways did they help them? And about the lyrics
on "The Gnome" it almost seems like there's a connection to DMT in there. On a dmt trip people have noticed that
they start to speak an unknown language "another way for gnomes to say hurray".

I would say do 'The Wall' album from pink Floyd because it's very interesting. by the end of the album, you figure out its a continuous loop, it also tells a story about someone being isolated from the rest of the world and slowly goes through some sort of madness and wanting to try and get out of that isolation. It's a bit similar to dark side of the moon, because it has sound effects to it, but the sounds are more interesting and makes you want to piece together the story as the album plays. I would say it is one of Pink Floyd's greatest albums, but it'll never have that psychedelic childlike sound as piper at the gates of dawn had. After Syd, the band never did maintain that sound, but always hinted at it, like wish you were here or dark side of the moon's track called "eclipse". The band always hinted Syd's influence in the band after piper.

Well Syd either created long-winded jams that could never be re-created or simple pop-songs. I think Floyd
managed to bring those two together after Syd left. They created the best of both worlds and turned their
raw psychedelic energy into impressive prog rock. About your suggestion of The Wall - yes i might do it. But i've
just released a few videos about Pink Floyd so i'll have to wait for some time now i think.
