I was that person, too! I was lying around all day! I wound up with a hiatal hernia from lying down on a full stomach, a large gallstone, and a heart scare. I started intermittent fasting, I lost 27 pounds (25 to go), and I’m walking 3 miles every evening! Thanks for inspiring others! It really does make a huge difference in how you feel- mentally and physically!

I am in my 60’s and walk year round here in Indy.
Began walking around 4 years ago, and walk about a mile and a half most days.
For example, this morning after I finish this comment I’m heading out to walk.
Today is the 167th day I have walked in 2024.
My motivation is that I’m as fit ‘looking’ as I was in high school.
Also my back is no longer hurting.
Still old, but better than I would be if I were to sit around and never get out.

Great advice man, I recommend unplugging from electronics entirely on a walk; no music, no distractions at all. It'll do wonders for your mental health. The brain needs time to process emotions, events, everything that happens and it can't do that if it's constantly being fed distractions.

So I’m not the only one! Everyone’s plugged in and lost in a bubble these days. They miss the birds singing, the wind in the trees, the sound of the sea or even other people talking. As someone said, there’s music everywhere, even in the sound of the traffic.

Over a four and a half year period starting at CHristmas 2019, I walked off 165 pounds. My sugars went from double digits to under 6. I spent a fortune on new jeans until I discovered "high end" thrift stores. (Yes, that is really a thing not just in Canada but in every state I've visited.) My stress levels dropped, my anxiety was grealy eased, and overall I feel better. I gave myself a Fit Bit watch and scale and I started with 6,000 steps per day. I now consider it a slow day when I get less than 20,000! I've kept the weight off, staying at about 165 pounds for just over a year and life has never been better. Get active and get healthy!

Give it a week. Just give it a legit try for a week. After that grab some water and have a sit down with yourself to look at the results. They won't be massive so you'll need to pay attention but I'm betting it all won't feel like the chore it originally did and you'll notice subtle changes in other aspects of your life. You WILL feel better. Maybe not perfect but better. And you deserve that. We all deserve that.

I’ve recently heard physicians recommending ‘exercise snacks’; shorter exercise periods throughout the day. Those snacks can add up to a lot of steps. Taking several 10 minute walks interspersed over a full day is just as effective as dedicating an hour or two at the gym or on the walking trails, and they’re easier to manage. The same physicians are also saying that 10,000 steps per day started out as a marketing gimmick when pedometers were first introduced to the public decades ago, and 4,000 steps is more in line with achieving health benefits such as weight loss and improved cardiac function. Thanks for documenting your walking your journey and advocating for getting out there. ❤

Walking is great! I see too many folks trying to run off their extra weight but ends up giving up very quickly. Walking is a lot easier, especially on the body and easy to remain consistent. Around 2020, I started to walk more and I am still doing it today. I do not do the 10,000 steps rule, I walk every other day, around 2.5 to 3.5 miles per walk. Sometimes I will do two days in a row, one day off and walk the day after. I also ride my bicycle, and do light weights. I listen to a lot of pod cast and music while walking. The rythum of walking feels great. Walking when it is raining is really nice too.....

I blew my back out on a construction site at like 18, asked the chiropractor one time what I can do to help the situation, without hesitation, he said go for walks.
It lossens everything up, gets the mussels pumping and blood flowing, and eventually with out noticing, your posture will naturally improve, due to your new demands on your body.
The human body is a crazy thing with how it can adapt and evolve.

I do my best to get out and walk daily, especially since I retired years ago now (I'm 70). These days, I go out behind my apartment, where there's a fence with a hidden hole I can cut through and am in in a big municipal/industrial type park in Kettering, Ohio, behind an Amazon distribution center and other buildings. It's nice and open but has a couple shady groves of trees and a creek at one end that comes out on a brand new park close to the bike path here. It's great for the mind and body for sure. Some days, I take a plastic bag with me and collect the trash the employees (evidently) and the truckers throw out their windows. I find things, lol. Two winters ago, it was two big trash bags full of clean mostly name brand men's clothing, some with tags still on them. He or she probably just threw them out a car door or car trunk, they were so heavy. I donated those to pickupsforvets. Another time, it was a girl's mountain bike in good shape that was hidden in a grove of trees. I checked on it for several days and finally put it out close to the road when I took a walk on Christmas Day, and it was gone the next day. The other day, I found a pair of men's work boots, size 13, with the tags still on them. I put them in plain sight under a tree, and they finally were taken after a few days. In this current heat and humidity, I'm out there usually at 7:30 a.m. or not at all. I truly enjoy this.

You'll really want to get out and walk around, or dance, or whatever it is you've been doing. It won't happen immediately, and there will be times you have to force yourself to get moving. But then, once you're doing it, you'll feel the gratitude of your body. It just feels good once you've established the moving habit. Thanks for your inspirational message.

    21. Used to walk a lot - it's part of how I lost so much weight. Now I collapse on the side of the road multiple times on the shortest of walks. I'd like to be able to walk like this. That's just not possible anymore. Good luck and good health wishes to everyone who still can. Please never take it for granted.
