      @Sequoia Well, Cambodia USES the yankster dollars so they are calculating in local income... Anything over $1us they use dollars and below they use their own currency which is the Riel.. 4,000 Riel = $1us... Everything is in paper currency. There are no coins...

    Thanks for making a positive video about the city. I've lived in Phnom Penh for many years and it's sometimes a bit grimy but it's a great city. The "Russian Market" name seems to be only used for tourists, as you mentioned the local name is "Psah Tuol Tom Pong", which translates as "market (on the) raised ground (big) (belonging to) Pong." In the 1980s it was an area frequented by many Soviet advisors, there is a "Soviet Khmer Friendship Hospital" not far away which was initially built in the 1960s but had continued aid from the USSR in the 1980s.

    Great video, and you are doing a great job of “going local” by eating the local food and shopping in the local markets. However, I lived in Phnom Penh for six months in 2008 and found it to be the most expensive by far of all the Southeast Asia countries. If you are going to stay awhile, the rents are steep. The economy is heavily dollarised, with everything rounded up to the nearest dollar ... or $5. But what really ruined it were the transport costs. Your $3.50 tuk-tuk ride, for instance, would cost you $5 after sunset. So, if you commute to work in the daytime and go out at night, it is quite easy to spend $20 a day getting around - or $600 a month! Comparable transport in Hanoi, by comparison, might average more like $5 a day.

    • @jessikat56
      @jessikat56 6 років тому +2

      It can be more expensive if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you shop for food at local market, cook at home, and use passapp it’s quite cheap. Plus, we rent a beautiful apartment for only $250 a month.

    • @juliacsam
      @juliacsam 6 років тому

      I got friends who lived in Ho Chi Minh/Saigon, Bangkok and Vientiane. We're from the French school and people often switch around the Indochina area, and by far, Phnom Penh and Vientiane are the cheapest cities. You just gotta know where to go

    • @GastonBulbous
      @GastonBulbous 6 років тому

      I lived in that part of the world for a decade, including extended stays in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Hanoi was very inexpensive. While local food in Cambodia was as cheap (but worse), Western food in restaurants and supermarkets was exorbitant, and housing & transport costs were easily twice as much in Phnom Penh than they were in northern and central Vietnam. Maybe it has changed since, but this was the case in 2008-09 during the hyper-inflation at the beginning of the global financial crisis. Add in a more grim and distrustful local populace, and there was just no contest over where I’d rather be. Interestingly, too, every Cambodian I ended up making friends with were “Kampuchea Khrom” or Khmer-Vietnamese from the Can Tho area of far southern Vietnam. Many were in Phnom Penh to work, and they were cheerful and friendly like other Vietnamese. (The Thai-Khmer in northeast Thailand are also sweet, if a bit unscrupulous.) The actual Khmer locals in PP, meanwhile, seemed like the most joyless and abject people in southeast Asia. All in all, after five months in PP, I was thoroughly depressed and financially depleted. I couldn’t get out fast enough.

      Kelly Tostada Yes it does! It was even sort of shoddy so the owners bought us our own router to put inside our apartment so it would be much better. They are all very accommodating out here. The Khmer are incredibly nice and reasonable people.

    If you cross over to the other side of the river, you'll get to Chroy Changva. Take the Japanese Bridge, then head towards Sokha Hotel which is on the right.It will take you no more than 15 minutes if you use GRAB. You'll find so many open restaurants which are cheap and yummy. If you're coming to or from the airport, make sure you take the train to the city centre for only $2.50. Check my UA-cam channel for the video. Happy travels and thanks for your report.

    The new Indian style tuk tuks are half as much because the LPG fuel is less expensive and the motor gets 35 km per liter.

    This was insightful and supported my thoughts on how the economy is. I watch a lot of the videos that are done by those who spend time around the Temple and around certain 'forests' filming different monkeys and responding to those who do not live anywhere those who spend more time threatening the VOs to turn them in for this or that having absolutely no idea as to the intricacies of those who live in the area. I would say the number one complaint the Westerners have is that the VOs "exploit" the monkeys because they are able to earn some I come from UA-cam. That would be like saying for example that taking a picture of a statue, a tree, or a bench is exploiting. I have tried to do some research into the economy in the different locations and if I was looking in the correct places it appears the average income is $1,300 USD/year. I say to those filming - film away - I enjoy watching and much can be learned.
    I wish you safe journey and look forward to your videos. Thank you.
