Last year we had Covid and a major death in the family on Christmas Eve. We had no Christmas. We had no joy. This year we are concentrating on joy, family, and the important things in life. The little bit of grace I've given myself this year is not wrapping every single present. There are a million cute boxes, bags, and wrapping thingamabobs out there. I'm using them without an ounce of guilt. I'm disabled and I've hired someone to help clean house this month. Grace people. Give yourself some grace this season. Thanks Mindy!
❤❤❤ I clean houses. Good for you for hiring someone!
@@dianasimplifies
Bless you for doing what you do. Cleaning a DisABLEd person’s house is a bit more work, and I am grateful for those who help me.
I make double batches of cookie dough in October and November. I bake half and freeze the rest in cookie size dough balls. Whenever I need fresh cookies I take out as many dough balls that I need, thaw and bake.
That’s a great idea!
This comment section is where it’s at!! I feel like you gave me permission to say it’s okay that we’ve had a really hard year, we don’t have to make it worse with Christmas peer pressure!! Lol
For someone so young you are VERY WISE!! I will be 70 in March....I love Christmas so much and all the fun traditions...we did them with our kids and then grand kids but now that they are all teens and above, keeping it simple is very appealing! I have toned things down each year for the last 5 years at least. The quiet evenings by the fire with the glimmer of the Christmas lights are as sweet as ever and the birthday we are celebrating means more to me each year. Thank you for your practical advice. You are a blessing to me! 😊
❤
I downsized our decorations when my husband and I sold our 5 bedroom for a small 3 bedroom home two years ago. I still decorate but not like I used to. Thanksgiving was spent at my in laws. I made a couple of pies for that. My daughter, son in law and granddaughter came the Sunday and I made the traditional Thanksgiving meal. I did not make desserts. I bought them. I’m so much happier not cooking as much and spending quality time with family. I also want to say that since I started watching your videos it really has helped so much. You are an inspiration to all of us hard working women.
I have been simplifying my life for the past three years. I used to spend hours getting ready in the mornings. I’ve simplified my hair and makeup routine and can do the whole thing in about 30 minutes including the shower. It frees up so much time. I order my groceries online and go to the drive through for medicine pickup and I’m a full time college student in Medical Laboratory Science. My plate is full. I feel good about making the changes I have. It relieves a lot of stress and stress isn’t fun.
I think it's important to remember that many people are in dire circumstances during the holidays, facing loneliness, homelessness, mental illnesses and many other issues. We should be grateful for what we have and not sweat the small stuff. Having family to celebrate with is a huge blessing and should not be taken for granted.
Beautifully said!
Oh Mindy! I crashed and burned after Thanksgiving! I totally agree with everything that you said! Simplify, pare down activities, baking, decorating! Doing only what has meaning! Amen! God bless you!
Wow, you put all my thoughts into words! BTW...grandma hated making those cookies too, she only did it because she thought we loved them 😂
Ha! That’s probably true!
I'm having my third baby any time this month so I wanted to make sure we could have a special Christmas morning breakfast. I made homemade cinnamon rolls today and froze them. That way, if the baby comes before Christmas I'll still have our special breakfast all finished and all we need to do is scramble some eggs. I think making things ahead of time and freezing them is a great way to get the best of both worlds. You're not busting your behind on the days you want to relax and enjoy your family, but you're still able to have the special foods if that's an important part of your traditions. Christmas breakfast has always been special in my family ever since I was a kid so I wanted to continue that for my kids.
This video outlines a number of the steps that I have taken for holidays. I am single and in my late 40’s. Because my closest family members are a 14 hour drive away, i am at a stage of life where I have spent more holidays alone than with l have with loved ones. To do so I had to create my own traditions. I looked at each holiday and figured out what made it feel like that holiday, what I didn’t like, and what made the holiday alone painful. I held onto what was important, eliminated what wasn’t, and created new things to make it unique to me. This year the family members spending Christmas with me will experience my version of the holiday for the first time.
I love the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Usually my husband and I cook most of it ourselves. There may or may not be disagreements between us on the prep and who is doing the most. This year we ordered the Thanksgiving feast from Cracker Barrel… I will never cook another turkey again. We ordered for 8-10. Could have fed at least 15 and it was all great. I will make my own sweet potatoes next year because I like them better, but that’s it! 😊
Been trying to talk my family into this forever! I did get someone else to cook my turkey.
Wish I could do that...we have some with multiple food allergies so have to do our own cooking for most stuff...just use my crockpots a ton and cook something's the day before.
Good for you! Looks like you enjoyed it just as much or more. There was a grocery store near us that put turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc out in the hot bar. We had 3 delicious traditional meals before Thanksgiving even came! We were thrilled and throughly enjoyed it.
Instead of a big thanksgiving dinner I just hosted a brunch this year. Best decoration ever!!! Soo much less work but the whole was still able to get together and have fun.
That’s a great idea!
Can I ask what you made? Sounds like a great idea!
@@michellefitz4287 yes!! I did a fruit tray, and a pastry tray. On the pastry tray I had already made pastries I just picked up from the grocery store. I baked bacon, biscuits (the frozen kind), and hash brown patties. I also made a large pan of scrambled eggs and a pot of tomato gravy for the biscuits(a family favorite).
@@carrievanvickle6052 oh wow! That all sounds fantastic. No wonder it was a success. You went all out! Thanks for sharing. 😊
I’m feeling the burnout this year for sure. I’ve been Christmasing as an adult responsible for childhood magic for 30 years and my mojo has run out. I’m slamming that easy button! And also reevaluating my holiday decorations real hard. 😮
The minimalist in me loves what you said about Christmas decor!! I help people downsize and declutter, and I always tell my clients, “If everything is important, then nothing is important.” Enjoy this beautiful season however is best for you and yours!!
This video seriously came at the perfect time. I'm currently healing from an ectopic pregnancy and my husband and I have already decided on a simple, survivable Christmas season with just us two.
We haven't put our tree up this year (and I don't think we will) but you definitely inspired me to get out some of our Christmas things and decorate simply. (And also to get/light some advent candles--I don't know why I've never thought to make a display like that at home before!)
@MrsSmith Oh my dear MrsS. wishing you healing and you’re so smart to make your season easier the way you described… 💕
I am so sorry for your loss. Godspeed.
My sister went through that years ago. I pray for complete healing for you.
@@SeeMindyMom Thank you ❤ Merry Christmas to you and your family
Huggs. Been there. Do as much as you want or don't. Eat well and heal your body.
Girl, I feel it! I am the financial secretary for my church, and work has been a booger this year. A major software change, and now another software change, then the treasurer passed away, and we elected a new treasurer and finance committee...it has left me just needing simplicity. I put out about half of what we typically do this year, just to avoid decision fatigue! We are focusing on Christ, and less on us. 🙌🙌
We have super simple & minimal decor. My kids love it, and that’s really all I care about. I want them to have fond memories, but literally no one else cares. We rarely have people visit, my home isn’t on social media, I’m not an influencer that needs to decorate for views 😂, it’s just for my sweet babies.
I agree with you. Less is more when decorating. I have done this the last two yrs. Shopping: Gifts for the little kids in the family. One secret Santa, one fun Yankee gift. Done.
We are doing crockpot Christmas. Each familly brings a crockpot dish and a dessert. Italian beef, meatballs, chicken n noodles, chicken pasta. Then a few sides with a dessert buffet. Everyone contributes and we all enjoy.
You aren’t the first person to say you’re scaling back on decor. We are as well. I still put up three trees but that’s about it. Our big tree in the family room, a tall pencil tree in the foyer and a tree in my bedroom. I enjoy watching a Christmas movie in be with the glow from the tree. 🌲
I put up a little pencil tree in my study with lights only because I enjoy starting my day there with scripture and just quietness. 😊
We throw an annual Christmas party and always have some family that stay the night. I was dreading having to feed the overnight guests the next days… so thank you for reminding me to hit the easy button and not fuss over cooking all the things for the them! 😊
Mindy, our family gathers the weekend prior to Thanksgiving and we also do finger foods. We figured out after making a huge traditional dinner and no one showed because they were tired and stuffed with food from previous family gatherings Thanksgiving day. 😳😔. So to resolve this, it’s usually untraditional foods, taco bar, bake potato bar, Lasagna, Roast, but mostly finger foods.. meatballs, sliders, veggies fruit. Etc., and it works. This way everyone is not tired of turkey /ham.. and lots of good foods. lol
I love both of your nativity scenes. They're so beautiful. We didn't have the traditional Thanksgiving meal either.
Hi Friend, l haven't watched this video yet but lm here for validation that "low key" and "scaled back" Christmas is OK because, like many of us, I'm exhausted and over Christmas before it's even started.
Cookie baking doesn't have to be done in December. Save the specialized ones to make throughout the winter when everybody is stuck inside and bored. You can also make the dough ahead to slice and bake for movie or game nights with visiting friends.
"Burden cookies." You are so right!
For us this year has been rough. Our approach is to do new things and let normal holiday thins go. We are taking kids to free outdoor lights, farms, parties and new movies. It’s been great.
I used to put out tons of decorations..For the past 15 years I do next to nothing! Just a plant or two and a few decorations that are really important to me!
Press the EASY BUTTON?? Take the SHORT CUT???? 👏 👏 YES!!!! Thank you for giving me permission and making me feel like it isn’t a bad decision 😊
Love this entire video. No one wanted to pass down the "burden cookies." You are so right! Great tips.
Went crazy to get the decorations up before Thanksgiving. Today, I just downsized all my decor. Looks cleaner, simpler and easier on the eyes. 😊
I def reduced Christmas decor because I don’t want to dread putting it all back in the attic. My family going through a hard season and I don’t have the energy I did when younger.
When I married my ex-husband I learned to embrace this, as his family held onto a lot of Italian traditions and did pasta dishes for the holidays that was outside of my traditions. Make what you like and what is special to you and your family more so than making what is expected. Now my DIL make's my son's nona's special pasta recipes during the holiday. Sometimes we do more American traditions. We don't care about what's on the menu as much as enjoying some favorite menu items and each other.
I made Macaroni and Cheese on Saturday which, believe it or not, I have never done before as far as I recall. it was so delicious! I froze half of it to be enjoyed later on. One of the benefits of not having children is that I don't need to decorate. I may put a tree up on the weekend, but not all the rest. Thank you for the video!
I worked retail for 17+ years. 13 of those I was the visual person. I changed all the mannequins, putting up all the Christmas decorations etc. It got to the point that I hated the thought of Christmas. I worked the night before thanksgiving then had to be back by 2am Black Friday. Then it was crazy through Christmas. I quit 9 years ago. This year is the first year in a long time I actually wanted to decorate. During my time working I’d order a $60 take home and heat up holiday meal and add a few homemade extras . Like you said it’s about time. We had 2 Thanksgivings this year due to our kids and extended families work schedule. It was nuts! Anyway I completely understand! Have a great week!
Love Rada!!! Here in central Alabama, we could only find them at our local monthly flea market. My grandmother, mother, and aunts all had these knives. I bought mine for my hope chest as a teenager. 🎉
Great video Mindy. Both my husband and I are in our late 60’s…our grown son and grandkids live in different states and their jobs keep them busy, especially during the Holidays. Getting together with them is usually a Summer event, so the Holidays are just my husband and I and his younger brother. His brother has a traumatic brain injury and we are his caregivers. Keeping things like meals and decorating are a must for us. A hearty pot of soup, some Christmas music and enjoying a quiet evening are special to us. We don’t miss the hustle and bustle of preparing for the Holidays….simple is better for us for sure. Wishing you and your family a blessed Holiday Season.😊
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you and yours as well. 😊
What a great idea to have the entire fridge "drawer" hold all the items you need for a specific meal (lunch). Your ideas are great time savers and stress reducers.
I quit pulling out all my decor when my kids were born. And I do not miss them. A tree and some outdoor decor. We have to travel for Christmas each year so I will enjoy other people's decor (and I don't have to put it away)
Mindy…I saw a meme that says it so simply “The first Christmas was pretty simple. It’s okay if yours is, too!” Something for all of us to think about. I used to put a lot of decorations (although not as much as some people), and we had wonderfully fun holiday times. But, as our family is grown and my husband passed almost four years ago…..I am finding much more meaning and peace in the simplicity now.
You go, Girl! I am with you on how to do holidays. Enjoy your holidays with your family.
This was the first year I have decorated in many years. I didnt send cards, purchased one gift and sent out another that I already had put together. Was all set to go to friends house for dinner cooking just a couple of items. Then Christmas Eve I was sick and did not go to church or to my friend's house. Just simply relaxed . To be honest it was the best Christmas in a long time filled with illness yes, but also, peace, joy, gratitude, and rest
Merry Christmas!
Mindy I'm with you on minimal Christmas decorations. Its just my husband and me. Our kids are all grown and have families of their own. I have cut the decorations down to 2 wreaths, 1 small tree, my nativity scene and candles in the window.
Man oh man Mindy, I feel you here!
I work 2 jobs outside the home and I am totally feeling the burnout! Especially when it comes to having to cook dinners! This week between my 2 jobs, I'm working so far 10 days straight. No days off in between, and I won't know when I'll get a day off til Sunday schedule is up.
I definitely utilize my crockpot! But I do need inspiration on new dishes to make. I'm on a low carb diet, so it's somewhat challenging to figure out dishes not only for me but that everyone else will like to.
I thank you for helping us to realize it doesn't have to be perfect. That's what I have to remind myself. It's not a competition! Lol
❤😂🎉
Great video!
Love all these ideas!
Great tips Mindy.
Thank you! This is the intervention that I needed going into the Holiday Season.
Some really great ideas! Thank you Mindy!
In December 2019, I had a shoulder replacement. I knew I would not be able to put away Christmas decor like I usually do (by myself) so I really limited the amount of decorations I put out that year and didn’t put up a tree.
I found that I really liked the look so I have continued cutting back each year. About two years ago I decided to give away my tree to a family in need. I also included quite a few decorations.
As I put out my decorations for this year over the weekend, I find that I can eliminate another tub of decor that I no longer want to keep.
The things that I am keeping, are the things that are most meaningful to me. That includes three nativities, some small ceramic Christmas bears that I painted the first year we were married and some things that I have crossed many years ago.
I needed this video! Thank you!
100000% agree with this! We’ve done the same thing with Thanksgiving!! We have hunters in the family so we always save the best game meat for thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving to your family. I went to my mom's she and my sista cooked. I'm disabled and never cared for cooking . That helped me alot because there's nothing like leftovers. Yum! I pretty much have always been a homebody. I love the cozy robe n curling up on the couch watching TV or UA-cam. Nowadays I cant curl up on the couch. I'm in too much pain. I miss lots of things. I barely get around . I'm 61 almost. What I'm trying to get to I feel ya Mindy. Would you mind adding me to your prayers. I would appreciate it. Just Linda from Indiana. Thanks
You got it, Linda! 🙏
I hear you on downsizing the decorations. My mom and I did a pop-up tree for a few years. Pre-lit, pre-decorated, it took all of 5 minutes to put up, including time to fluff the bows, and about the same to take it down.
It's almost see-through, so the lights from the opposite side shine through, making it look like there are about 2-3x as many lights on it as there are. Then, it sways when the furnace kicks on. 😂 It really was a lot of fun.
We still have it, we've just opted for a table-top fiber optic tree the last couple of years, and that's been lovely too.
It's just the two of us, we're both adults, and neither of us are big into decorating. Still, we like to have something festive up.
Love the idea of simplifying to create more enjoyment.
Yes, I donated the ‘out of style” decor this year. Two full bags, felt good . I don’t miss them. I place small vignettes around my cozy apartment. Several vintage treasures from my Mother. Please pace yourself ❤️🎄🙏🏻
Another great video ❤
I've been burned out and tired too...
This is great. Needed this.❤
I love this video Mindy! Great job! Thank you!
Great ideas for large crowds! Thanks for sharing!
I had a week off in November and pulled out all my Chrismas decorations and went through them with a critical eye. I donated 4 tubs worth of decorations, 5 bags of bows, gift bags, gift boxes and tags and 20 rolls of wrapping paper to our local church and thrift store. I kept only thiae decorations that had meaing and went heavier on winter decor as opposed to Christmas.
Love this video! Feeling this this year as well! 🩷
This video really spoke to me! I grew up in the 70s and my sister has most of our family Christmas ornaments and I like looking for them on her family's tree and seeing the ones she got for her family and ones from her husband's family. I've worked retail most of my life and I just don't do Christmas decorations at home. Growing up we didn't have much Christmas decorations past the tree and the cards we received. There was one thing my mom made, and it was the first thing she put up. It signaled Christmas was coming, and it was so exciting when she put it in the kitchen window.
Excellent video mindy!!! ❤
I remember growing up my parents NEVER, EVER ever got new decorations or ornaments . It was the same decorations and lights every year. We had one little plastic wreath with little ceramic elves around it and that was it.
I love your videos, very helpful and original ideas.
Thank you!
Thanks Mindy for showing us how to bring balance to our lives without feeling guilty 🤣😂! God bless you xx
Last Christmas I was sick so all the things I "thought" I should be doing didn't happen. No one missed them. It was such a lesson. This year I'm so much calmer! We're in Australia, too, so the traditional foods just don't work as it's too hot.
Great video and some really good suggestions! Thank you!
I love your idea of making this year a little simpler. Everyone is so stressed this time of year. Relax and enjoy your family and the real reason for the season!!
I get what you mean about being stuck in the kitchen for the entire holiday. One year by the time I got everything finished and the dishes cleaned up the day was pretty much done and everybody was asleep on the floor. I kind of missed the whole afternoon.
I love how you made your breakfast food so presentable and beautiful!
Thank you for the great advice!! It’s much appreciated this time of year 😊🙏
Sometimes the "extra special thing" can be piling on the couch and watching Christmas movies all day! Our house is a combination of extroverts and introverts and I find if we don't have some days at home with no reason to leave the house, kids start melting down, everyone gets overtired, and suddenly the "magic" of the season is gone and we hate everything. Rest and downtime are so important!
Also, years ago I started asking my kids what one or two things we just HAD to do or it wouldn't be Christmas (going to see lights, watching certain movies, making a special cookie, etc.). This helped us discover what they really found important and we could let the rest go. I do the same thing with family vacations and summer break. We then spread these activities out over 3-4 weeks. This allows us to make sure each person gets to do something that is super important to them without us feeling like we're stretched in 25 directions all at once.
I’ve already had time to watch more
Christmas movies than I did all season long last year. I love movies, and I have quite a list to go through for the holidays, and it’s a great way to relax at the end of the day!
I love listening to your advice. It gives us all permission to press the easy button and breathe during the busiest times of the year whether that’s holidays are a time of year that’s just extra stressful for us
I love that take on the advent wreath!
this video is an emotional hug, such great advice
Thanks so much Mindy! You definitely have my heart! This year is a kind of new normal for me and my family- my Mom is now in a nursing home so we spent Thanksgiving with her. I’m usually the one who does the majority of the cooking throughout the holidays and I have to say that this is the first year in many that I haven’t been totally stressed out and not even wanting to eat the food that I’ve cooked. Everything seems to be so expensive right now that I have made a conscious decision to simplify and downsize a lot of my decor and food. The few things that I can’t bring myself to let go of are my family’s traditional Christmas Eve seafood dinner and Church after. Christmas Day we like to do an all day snack fest with charcuterie and other treats. I appreciate your channel so much and I hope you and your family have a wonderful and blessed holiday season! 🌻😊
I love this! Thank you so much for sharing. We also do Christmas Day charcuterie, or sometimes it’s just “everybody’s leftovers” they bring to my parents house because we’re all just “done” with cooking and baking! 😊
My mom went to a nursing home this year as well. We did do a Thanksgiving dinner but then we all went to the nursing home to visit with her. She always made noodles homemade for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I made some but it just wasn't the same. It is definitely a new normal. God bless you.
@@BarbaraU thank you for sharing your experience! God Bless you and your family too!
My favorite Thanksgiving was the year we had lobster! 🦞
I know alit of people that also don't care for traditional Thanksgiving food and do exactly what you did...whatever they like the most. As far as Christmas goes, we only buy for grandkids. I enjoy the Christmas decorating...hate the gift giving part after doing that for 45 years...sometimes I wish I could leave the country and come back after the first of the year. It always falls on the mom to do it all, and I'm done!
You are SO right on about it ALL Thank you and God Bless you ❤️ ALL 😊
I needed this today. I'll still have to do all the stuff, but I'm tired of all the shopping stuff!
Very well said. We definitely need to stop trying to do everything and enjoy what we can.
Mindy, thanks for being so down to earth and real!!! I love your videos and am a big fan over the last couple years.
Well done....fantastic video❤
Thank you!
I have down size a lot of stuff in my life, awesome video, thanks Mindy 👏👏👏
I have some Rada cutlery. Love it..... Agree with your simplified approach to this time of year.
I totally agree with you on this. Thanks for some great tips !!
Spoken so well. We all need to give ourselves and others grace in all areas of our lives.
Yes, yes, yes! To ALL of this!! Agree 100%, we started a "simplified" holiday season a few years ago. And honestly, people were unhappy with us, but we found we enjoyed the season as a family MUCH more.
I agree 100% that paring down, doing what gives you joy and enjoying each other's company is what holidays should really center around. When people leave this world , what we might ss most is THE TIME doing things together!! You won't regret this new way of doing things, and if you do, add it to next year's plans! 💜💜💜
Thanks for video, hats off to you to be able to simplify Christmas decor., I Love it too much and I tend to go CRAZY, it’s not like “explosion crazy” but it’s pretty close😮 Happy Holidays to you and all of yours. Take Care
If you enjoy it, you should keep it. :). It’s not my favorite thing (in general, decor is not my forte), so I let myself off the hook this year. :)
Hear Hear Mindy😊
Hi Mindy Thanks so.much for this great video I agree on changing up on some of the family traditions we also switched on a few we loved and in doing that we as a family seemed to enjoy our family time we spent together more😊❤️👍
Thank you for the gentle reminders. This is a season of joy and that is enough. Whatever brings joy and peace and shares it with others! Good memories to carry us through the year. 😊❤ GBU
My family doesn’t like most traditional thanksgiving or Christmas foods so we never have them! I’m trying to downsize some this year too!
I love Rada!! Absolutely the best in kitchen knives!
Amen, Sister! Great tips and reminders. Thanks for the video.
I usually, if able. , again IF , try to budget a little on convenience here as well cuz it is end of year at work and I am crazed!
