I think the USDA numbers are “reports” based on current cost trends, and not necessarily recommendations, but I still wonder where they get their numbers from, ya know?
Me too! I feed 3 adults and make dog food for 3 dogs on what they are saying I should be spending on two adults on the thrifty budget! We eat well and eat most of our meals at home.

I would love to see you do this with their estimates for one person. Part of the reason that a larger household is able to go so far under their calculated amount and eat a varied diet is because larger households benefit from economy of scale.

I think these numbers are ludicrous! I think it's a ploy to keep people wallowing in "seeee it's SO expensive to buy anything these days" and to stay in the "we'll never get out from underneath this debt/govt assistance, etc"

I'm single. And I spend thirty five dollars a week on groceries and I have plenty to eat
Shopping sales is so important, but you also need to know if a "sale" price is still a good deal. This week, Acme is doing their Mega Produce Sale on over 60 produce items. Some of them are great deals, like bagged coleslaw mix or a bunch of celery for $1. But the "sale" also includes avocados for $1 each. Other stores in my area have avocados on sale for $.69 each. A 4.5 oz jar of minced garlic for $1 at Acme? Dollar Tree has an 8 oz jar for $1.25. Way better deal.
I start with shopping Kroger sales, then everything else comes from Walmart and Aldi. That strategy always comes out cheaper than shopping at any one single store and by far is cheaper than Costco or Sam's ever.
The thrifty budget was actually more per week than the low budget. It said $545 on the low and $642 on the thrifty for myself and my 3 and 4year olds. This amount is crazy. We spend $300/month.
In my area, Walmart, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree are the cheapest stores. We do not have Reasers, Albertsons, Kroger, etc. With scratch cooking, shopping sales, meal planning, and keeping a good inventory list, I can keep my grocery and supply budget to $200 per month. That includes 3 meals and a snack as well as all household cleaning supplies. I always get great ideas from your videos.
My husband and I were just looking at the government's chart, for our family the low budget recommended $964 a month, we spend about $600 on all consumables 😊
Coat pork chops in mayo or sour cream, then roll them in some type of breading. Then I've either baked or fried. Keeps them more moist and tender.
Great video! I think in order to get the best deals and save money you truly do have to shop different stores. The sale prices in that store were great. I saw several deals I would have taken advantage of. 😊

I would like to see regular grocery hauls like this. They are helpful to keep in mind an idea of pricing and what is a good deal for certain items.
Did a light spread of sour cream and then used stovetop type stuffing like breadcrumbs for pork chops. The teenager who always complains about pork said it was pretty good. Extremely high praise😂

A way to save longer term would be to pick up several more chickens to have one per week for the next 2-3 months. This would keep you meat cost in the $0.88lb range. If prices go lower than that then maybe just a few chickens to get you to the next sale. My area, $0.88lb for a whole chicken is a great price. This strategy does require a large freezer or mid size chest freezer, but with a family of 5 it pays for itself. Of course, I can get chicken quarters for $0.79 and this is a better deal if you aren’t in need of white meat.
I am really trying to do a reduce spend January. I went to the store for the first time this month and ended up with great deals from my local supermarket chain. You never know what you are going to find if you look around.

I know in my Kroger app there is a coupon for .40 off on two apples. Combined with the sale on .97/pound, that’s even more savings 😊
I try to make a quick search for possible digital coupons for items that are already on my list.
I like shopping the sales, and finding a recipe for something I wouldn’t normally buy or try. On the pork chop note, I adapted a recipe from Rachel Ray many years ago for pork chops, thick cut bone in, seared on the stove finish in the oven serve with a sage and blue cheese compound butter on top with sautéed pears mixed with red onion and mashed sweet potatoes. It’s different but the flavors all go so well together feels very gourmet but simple ingredients and methods. Love your channel ❤

We have Kroger in my area and we don’t usually shop there, but I’ve been hearing if you buy the sales, you can usually get some good deals.

I rarely buy pork chops I only buy them when they're in the markdown meat section my daughter likes them cooked in the crock pot with cream of mushroom soup and a package of dry ranch dressing I buy the Kroger brand of that.
For many years now I have bought only marked down meat rarely any on sale and never full price. My favorite is when I find ribeye steaks marked down . I also shop the clearance and markdown areas of the store I recently bought 12 jars of 24 oz Ragu for .57 a jar I went by expiration dates and bought enough to last to October 24 not everything is short dated when marked down. This is how I am able to keep my grocery budget low like you I try to find something that I can use for more than one meal. I live in Illinois 20 mi south of Peoria

We use the brand Oven Fry for pork for the pork chops. Just bake them. Very flavorful!
Wow! I wish my store had buy one get one in the meat section! I always try to meal plan around the sales each week. I am jealous of the deals you got ! Our grocery store has started these three day deals where on Friday, Saturday and Sunday they have about 6 items that are price slashed. I go in just for those items and get out!

this chart states that for the 3 of the people in my home on the low end I should spend almost 200 bucks a week for groceries. we don't eat breakfast at home so just lunch and dinners. I do sales..and coupons..etc etc so there is no way I come even close to that much a week..and wouldn't have that much a week to spend anyway...lol

Kroger changed up their B5S5 once you hit the first 5 you don’t have to always buy in groups of 5. You might what to double check to see if your store policy is like that or you have to still buy in groups of 5.

Yes I love that too. When I ring up something marked down and don’t know it’s a mega deal item, I’ll go back through the store and find the cheapest mega items so I can round out getting that off.
I live in Muskogee and we just got a thunderstorm with some hail. Stay warm and safe during this crazy Oklahoma weather.
Pork Chops have definitely been a challenge. What I finally settled on is to treat them like thin cut chicken breast.....just salt/pepper, maybe garlic powder.....in advance so the salt has time to work (30 minutes or longer), then simply pan fry quickly so they get nicely browned and just barely done so they don't dry out. It's still pretty quick to do them, especially if you get the thin cut boneless chops.
Please do more shelf stable ideas!

I live in your city. I need you to take me grocery shopping each week! I am a Wal-Mart+ member and only step foot in a store maybe once a month. I know I am dearly paying for it and could do much better.
pork chops, sear them put in a crock pot with canned cream of mushroom soup, cook on low for 4-6hrs depending on how many you cook. when it falls apart its done. serve over rice and a veg on the side rounds out the meal.

Please do a video with lots of pork chop recipes. I too don't make these for my family because I just don't know how to cook them without them turning into tough medallions. But pork is cheap, and I think it would be good to see what you are able to do.

My family doesn’t like pork chops that much either. Going way over budget. The normal calculations per family… is that an average nationally because I live in CA things are more expensive here. I’ve been spending about $400 a week on groceries. Trying to get that down because my car insurance went way up.

I wish people would realize that Walmart does not always have the lowest prices. It is so much more cost effective to shop other stores for their sale items, deals and clearance sections. Just say no to Wal-Mart 😂

I did a comparison on my shopping trip to an employee owned grocery store (Winco) in my area with what I could get at Walmart on the exact same items. Winco won hands down to Walmart! While I will shop for some things at Walmart that Winco doesn’t carry, Winco is my go to store because the savings are substantial. We also have national grocery chains in our area Albertsons and Kroger. I wholeheartedly agree with you that shopping the sale flyers is an excellent way to save money on groceries! I like to use the frozen meals like the broccoli and potatoes as a quick side dish for dinner. We can get great deals at our local Kroger's.

I live in Kentucky I do almost ALL of my shopping at Kroger use digital coupons. I saved almost 3,000 dollars in 2023 plus I get fuel points. I feel like a lot of things at Walmart at not as good quality from other stores.

Our personal budget is $160 a week. Everything comes out of this, cleaners, laundry supplies, paper products. VERY rarely do we go over, usually under and I squirrel away the extra.

Does Reasor's require you to buy in multiples of five in a buy 5, save $5 situation? One of my local grocery stores has a "five or more" policy, one has a "must be in multiples of..." policy. Something you may want to mention for your viewers is that knowing your store's policy for these sales can help you save money. No reason to buy in multiples unless necessary. :)

A. Since the Brookshire buy, produce is all over the place as far as quality. But ya, picked up a whole bunch of Pink Ladies on two different trips, fam devoured them. Every holiday they are marking up 5dz box of eggs by $2 grr.

If you’re in OKC area, I highly recommend Crest. I miss that place. 😭
The only thing is you had to find 4 other items just to get the discount on the 1 item you wanted the sale on. That is their strategy to consumers to buy more. We only buy what is in meal plan at Walmart and a lot of great value brand and double the amount of food that you would have gotten at chain stores. Our chain store you can spend $7 on a block of cheese 😮
